France based games publisher and developer Ubisoft has announced that it has closed a deal withGameloft on acquiring its India based games development studio. The deal will go through later in the year, when all the formalities are complete and the studio is ready to change hands. Gameloft and Ubisoft are long time partners. Both companies are based in France and Ubisoft even had a large stake, of around 20%, in Gameloft until last year, when it sold it to an investment bank for around 190 million dollars. Gameloft is still the main partner in the mobile games market for Ubisoft as it produces mobile games based on most of the intellectual property coming out of Ubisoft. Apparently, the mobile games developer is also thinking on developing for other platforms, as it has recently made a move on the Xbox market with the Xbox Live Arcade title Prince of Persia Classic. The studio that Ubisoft has bought is located in Pune, one of India's most important university centers, which is producing about 80,000 or so engineers in an year. There are currently 120 people employed at the studio, but Ubisoft plans on increasing the number to 200 right away and to 500 in the near future. Christine Burgess-Qumard, who is executive director of worldwide studios at Ubisoft, declared: "Following on the recent announcement of our new Singapore studio, this acquisition will reinforce Ubisoft's presence in Asia and the southeast region in particular. India has a promising future in the video game industry and this is an opportunity for us to establish ourselves in the country." The recent moves by most big game companies into the Asian market, also exemplified by Take Two, which named a new and experienced head of its Asian division, signify the importance that the videogames industry is placing on Asia as a source of technical expertise and as a gaming market.

I talked about Nintendo in my previous post and in this one I wanted to talk about two more video game companies whose shares trade on the pink sheets Ubisoft (UBSFY) and Gameloft (GLOFF).

Neither Ubisoft nor Gameloft are quite in my buy zone yet, however I think they are both interesting companies. The CEOs of the two companies are brothers Yves Guillemot at Ubisoft and Michel Guillemot at Gameloft. In fact both companies appear very much to be family affairs with several Guillemots listed as key executives at both companies.

Ubisoft has a roughly $1 billion market cap and has a rather interesting portfolio of games. Ubisoft has enjoyed great success with their Tom Clancy games (Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, and Rainbow Six), as well as with their Assasins Creed and Prince of Persia franchises. Ubisoft is also a leader in the dance and fitness genres (Just Dance, Michael Jackson the Experience, Your Shape Fitness, My Fitness Coach, Golds Gym Cardio Workout). However Ubisoft also tends to release a lot of filler so profitability has not been as great as one might expect given all the hits Ubisoft has had. Ubisofts quality and track record have been pretty good on their core releases, I think if they focused on those they would be better off.

Gameloft has a roughly $500 million market cap and is focused on mobile gaming. They were the #2 mobile publisher in 2010 behind EA Mobile. Gameloft has had some success releasing mobile versions of games which are similar to existing hits (ie NOVA vs Halo, Starfront vs Starcraft, etc). Gamelofts relationship with Ubisoft also allows it right of first refusal to develop mobile versions of Ubisofts games. Compared to the first place mobile publisher, EA Mobile, Gameloft is a pure play on mobile gaming which may make it more attractive to some. Compared to the third place mobile publisher, Glu Mobile, Gameloft has triple the revenue, is growing, and is already profitable. So even though Gamelofts market cap is roughly double that of Glu Mobiles, I feel Gameloft is the better play. One risk with Gameloft is that since many of their games are copies of popular games, should those other publishers bring their major IPs to mobile gaming Gameloft would likely suffer.

Android is a Linux-based operating system for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. It is developed by the Open Handset Alliance led by Google.[9][10] Google purchased the initial developer of the software, Android Inc., in 2005.[11] The unveiling of the Android distribution in 2007 was announced with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance, a consortium of 86 hardware, software, andtelecommunication companies devoted to advancing open standards for mobile devices.[12][13][14][15] Google releases the Android code as open-source, under the Apache License.[16] The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) is tasked with the maintenance and further development of Android.[17] Android has a large community of developers writing applications ("apps") that extend the functionality of the devices. Developers write primarily in a customized version of Java.[18] Apps can be downloaded from third-party sites or through online stores such as Android Market, the app store run by Google. As of October 2011 there were more than 400,000 apps available for Android, and the estimated number of applications downloaded from the Android Market as of December 2011 exceeded 10 billion.[19][20] Android was listed as the best-selling smartphone platform worldwide in Q4 2010 by Canalys[21][22] with over 200 million Android devices in use by November 2011.[23] According to Google's Andy Rubin, as of December 2011 there are over 700,000 Android devices activated every day.[

According to a report by analysis firm Convergence Catalyst, the Indian smartphone market is expected to grow by 100 percent with 18 to 20 million devices being sold in the year in comparison to 9.5 million units sold in 2011. The report states that smartphones will encompass for 12 to 14 percent of the total handset sales and Samsung is expected to be the dominant player in the market. As of now Nokias Symbian platform holds about 46 percent in market share while Android holds 28.3 percent of the market, however this will supposedly change. The report states that Android will cross the 50 percent mark in market share while Symbian will drop to 23.3 percent. Notably the report also states that Windows Phone will see gains, but in the scheme of things it appears to be pretty minimalistic as Windows Phone controlled 1.2 percent of the market in 2011 and is expected to grow to only about 3.6 percent in market share. Clearly this does not bode well for Nokia, but the report states that Nokia will continue to be relevant in the country.

In Backstab, Gamelofts most recent title, you take the role of Henry Blake, an English officer whos been betrayed by his own government. Blake escapes from slavery, goes underground, and become a rebel/mercenary/pirate bent on revenge and redemption. Its a worthy story and the graphics are a major step forward for Gameloft. The range of fully-detailed environments is simply astounding for a mobile game. The dialogue and voice acting can be weak in places, and the combat could be more varied. But the game is still strong enough to grab our number one spot.

The basic difference between Operations and Project Management is Operations is ongoing where a project has a definite start and a definite end. Someone wants to move from Operations to PM 1) May be for more challenge. 2) May be that person from the operations might know the stakeholders and can effectively identify their power, influence and risks to control the project effectively. Besides he might be already aware of the technical details and the company process. A project comes to the company through many ways. By contacts of the Management, By responding to advertisement, By placing adds in various medium etc. But there many process before awarding the project the buyer ask for RFQ-request for proposal. In response the service provider ( Sales/Marketing )Prepare the proposal and may be present the solution ( requirements as per our understanding) at the customers place , negotitae the price and delivery and sometimes technology and get the PO for the project ( Project cost and delivery is fixed ). The cost of the project may be less than the cost negotiated with the customer. The mgnt. will decide project manager and in turn he will aquire the necessary resouces ( keepng in mid the budget ) and kick start the project. The resources may be added gradually as the project progresses.Based on the development strategy the PM creates plan, execute , control and closure of the project. The delivery manger gets the clearnce from the Project QC and verifies the deliverables and package and acceptance from the Customer. The delivery manager will have the tracking of deliverables to the customer. Project life cycle starts from initiatian to Archival of

the project artifacts.
