FRINGE 2012 HOTSPOTS

WHAT IS A FRINGE HOTSPOT? A Fringe Hotspot is a local business or organization that pledges to provide discounts to the Fringe community during the month of June 2012. Every year, thousands of Fringe-goers converge on Hollywood to see shows, share stories, and mingle as a community. They all need places to drink, eat, shop, and relax. Fringe Hotspots address these needs by providing incentives to patronize local business. For our premier festival in 2010, close to 20 businesses participated in this program. For the 2011 Hollywood Fringe Festival, over 40 businesses took part in the Hotspot program. WHY BECOME A FRINGE HOTSPOT? Our Hotspot program provides opportunities for local business and organizations to harness the excitement and commotion stirred by the Fringe every June. Benefits of the program... Drive Fringe patrons and participants to your place of business Qualify for discounted advertising opportunities in festival materials A listing in our printed guide and website for your business or organization along with placement on the Fringe Map within the guide Align your brand with goodwill towards the arts HOW DOES IT WORK? This year Fringe participants and patrons will wear iconic buttons as they move between shows to identify their involvement. With these buttons come discounts on shopping, eating, drinking, and services at local purveyors who participate in the Hotspot program.

ABOUT THE HOLLYWOOD FRINGE

The Hollywood Fringe Festival is an annual celebration of the emerging arts. Environments for the Fringe include both traditional and unorthodox venues; fully equipped theaters, street corners, clubs, bars, and places unexpected. Performances are self-produced by local, national, and international arts companies and independent performers. In the spirit of most Fringes, participation is open and uncensored. The second annual Hollywood Fringe Festival hosted over 200 artistic projects performing over 800 performances in 30 performance spaces with 20,000 total seats filled. The 2012 Hollywood Fringe Festival will take place June 14 - 24, 2012.

WHAT IS A FRINGE FESTIVAL?

Fringe Festivals exist throughout the world as havens for underground and emerging arts scenes. The Fringe Festival concept was incubated in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1947, eight performance groups appeared uninvited on the fringes of the exclusive Edinburgh International Festival. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe has since grown into the largest arts festival in the world attracting millions of patrons every summer. Fringe Festivals have since sprung up in dozens of cities across the world. Most Fringe Festivals are uncurated and open preferring lotteries, first-come-first-served, and find-your-own venue systems to a formal selection process. This open means of programming fosters the work of both the wellestablished and the obscure; everyone has the opportunity to participate.

L.A.s first noncurated arts festival is a triumph

FESTIVAL 2011 IN REVIEW

THE NUMBERS After a very successful debut in 2010, the 2011 Hollywood Fringe Festival grew by 15% in its second year. The 2011 festival filled 20,000 seats in over 30 performance spaces all over central Hollywood. 205 distinct shows were featured with more than 800 performances over the 11 day festival. Approximately 10% of the festival was international with 25% of all participants coming from out of state. In 2011 the Hollywood Fringe website saw over 116,000 visits with nearly 600,000 pageviews from registration opening through the end of the festival. Website traffic grew nearly 40% between 2010 and 2011. THE COMMUNITY The Fringe Central tent was the #2 Theatre Experience of 2011 for Stephen Leigh Morris of the LA Weekly: The Hollywood Fringe tent, a huge canopy with a bar and late-night karaoke, located for the 10-day summer festival in the Santa Monica Boulevard parking lot of Art/Works. What our theater lacks is a centralized watering hole, and here was one, at least for 11 days, where the community could imagine it actually was a community: drinking, networking, discussing what they were doing and what theyd seen. It was like social media, but without the media. Arts companies have used the Hollywood Fringe Festival as a launching pad for their new and exciting projects. Multiple companies have taken their Hollywood Fringe Festival projects on tour around the country to great success. Other projects have staged further productions based on their success at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. The Hollywood Fringe Festival partnered with independent venues to stage Fringe performances. Over the eleven days of the Fringe, many of these venues collected rents totaling well over $25k during a season when many venues cant book any acts at all. THE PRESS The 2011 Hollywood Fringe Festival was well covered by local and national media outlets, as well as independent journalists, bloggers, and advocacy organizations. The festival was called an artful feast by the LA Times, a roaring success by Backstage, and a triumph by LA Weekly. When discussing the 2011 Hollywood Fringe the LA Weeklys Steven Leigh Morris said L.A. theater is probably as open a place as anywhere, but the Hollywood Fringe is the purest program we have that embodies the open market of ideas and entertainments. And a Los Angeles Times reporter stated that My Hollywood Fringe Festival experience allowed me to become immersed in a community of talented and kind individuals, sharing in a love for the arts as well as life that went well beyond the stage. For the second year in a row, LA Weekly and Backstage Magazine collaborated to cover more than 40 shows during 2011. Hundreds of reviews were posted in blogs, industry outlets and other media.

We received contact from over 80 productions and created contacts for future shows to help fill the rest of my year. I cant say enough about the positive impact about the Fringe for Theatre Asylum.
