APPLICATIONS
The box culvert is available either as an inverted U bonded on a concrete base
(crown type) or as a U shaped trough with a lid (invert type).
In certain circumstances box culverts have distinct advantages compared with other
types of culvert structures. They are particularly suitable for:
z

Large flows with low headroom.

Box culverts can accommodate significantly larger flows than corrugated pipe
alternatives.
Instant bridging
Can withstand heavy wheel loads, even when there is limited fill in place.
Ducting
An extremely cost efficient alternative for the ducting of cables, steam, air, hot
water and oil to name a few.
Difficult Site Conditions
Very adaptable due to minimal excavation and backfill requirements.

SLAB LINKED SYSTEM

Where it is required to install a multiple run of box culverts, consisting of 3 cells or

more the Slab Linked System may be used, these installations tend to be more
economical. This is partly due to the fact that a significant reduction may be made in
overall width of both trench excavation and base slab.
The use of spanning slabs provides less restriction to the entry of water to the
