Tavern owners beware

Maskitla tavern in Ga Matodi and Maphanga Bottle Store in Ga Madiseng had their liquor licences suspended last week. According to Tubatse Police these two liquor outlets has failed to comply with the Liquor Act on many occasions and as a result the Police reported them to the Liquor Board. The decision to suspend their licences was taken on 22 February after a hearing was held in Mokopane. The suspension of their licences means, if they continue to sell liquor, owners of these outlets will face arrest. The Police say the suspension will set as deterrence to other liquor licence holders to ensure that they must always comply with the conditions of the liquor act. The Police would also like to encourage all the liquor outlets to comply with the liquor act at all times.

Friday afternoon rush

In the photograph a Limpopo Traffic Control vehicle rushes towards the bridge over the Steelpoort / Tubatse river last week Friday to try and remedy the traffic jam that saw vehicles jam packed way past the Bothashoek turn-off to Praktiseer.

Oops! Plan not working ...

The concrete pillars, which are not seats, and were erected around Burgersforts traffic lights last week, now do not seem to be have been a very good plan. This plan was made by Greater Tubatse Municipality to protect the traffic lights against reckless dirvers, but they did not realise how wild and reckless drivers can behave in Burgersfort if congestion picks up. It seems that with the large and heavy vehicles in the middle of town, as well as the general free for all (while traffic officers checks licences at a quiet spot outside the CBD madhouse) the little concrete poles did not last long. This state of affairs is not limited to one, but to more intersections.

Plan working!
Since a week or two ago, points men are on duty at the T-junction from Modiwa Platinum Mine / Dilokong Hospital and the R37 from Polokwane. The traffic are regulated during peak hours when this junction turns into a nightmare. This plan was conceived by Modikwa in conjunction with traffic authgorities and especially Modikwa employees a gratefull for the steps taken to ensure their safety.

... and this one as well

Two Rivers focus on road safety

Two Rivers Platinum Mine and the Limpopo Roads, Transport and Public Works Department have joined hands this week to promote road safety. The first phase of the project will be focussed along the R555, between Burgersfort and Steelpoort Park and is aimed at curbing the fatalities caused by crashes as a result of stray animals on the roads, especially during the night. Over 1500 reflector bands were distributed to more than ten cattle farmers staying close to the main road connecting the mines and the surrounding communities. Two Rivers Platinum says bad or lack of road maintenance as well as unattended potholes is one aspect and a leading cause of fatalities. The mine says mines operating in the southern portion of the Eastern Limb (Steelpoort Valley) have recently lost more than eight employees as a result of crashes near the mines where stray animals were found to be the leading cause. We lost 6 of our colleagues in the recent past due to car accidents on these roads. At Two Rivers Platinum, safety forms an integral part of our value-system and we therefore did not hesitate to identify this project as one of our key SLP initiatives. This project is an extension of our on-mine road safety campaign, said Mr Jakes Jacobs, the Health and Safety Leader at Two Rivers Platinum Mine. In addition to the reflector bands and as an extension of its mine safety policy, Two Rivers Platinum has invested over R2 million, on road maintenance and pothole repairs focussing on Sekhukhune Road and R577 access roads leading to Lydenburg in Mpumalanga. Similar work is planned for the local access roads. This will be implemented in the next financial year. The recent RTMC reports and subsequent research conducted have shown that stray animal commonly found along the public roads at night are among the most common causes to crashes and have contributed to the high number of fatalities on the South African roads in 2011. The trend also proved that the common occurrence per day time is between 19h00 and 23h00. As part of our contribution towards the reduction and possibly the total elimination of the unnecessary loss of life and property on our roads, Two Rivers Platinum is committed towards facilitating sustainable development in the communities closer to where we operate and hence our involvement in road safety campaigns including road maintenance. The need to donate the reflective bands among the local cattle farmers in partnership with the relevant government departments and the neighbouring communities is therefore aligned to our SLP objectives. We hope and trust that other mines will join hands with us so that we can improve the condition of our roads and save lives on our roads, said Mr Adriaan de Beer, the Business Leader at Two Rivers Platinum Mine.

New prospecting right for Platfields

JSE-listed exploration company Platfields on Tuesday said it had been granted a new prospecting right for chrome ore, cobalt, copper ore, iron-ore, lead, nickel ore, platinum-group metals (PGMs) and other minerals near Lydenburg. This consolidated Platfields prospecting right on portions 4, 5 and 39 of the farms Kliprivier 73 and Draaikraal. The prospecting right covers about 1 200 ha and is positioned directly next to the Everest South mine and Booysendal project. The exploration programme at Kliprivier targeted a shallow-positioned prospect of three-million ounces, at a grade of three grams a ton of ore. Platfields said it had already indicated a resource of two-million ounces in its Berg project, which is an extension of Kliprivier. With our 100 percent-owned prospecting right now in place, we can fast-track the drilling programme, designed to calculate the resource on the project area. Drilling would start in three months, CEO Bongani Mbindwane said further stating This project will complement the existing portfolio of Platfields, in particular the Platfields Draaikraal project, while adding further weight to its standalone potential for mining.

ARM interested in Amplats assets

African Rainbow Minerals, said on Monday it was interested in acquiring Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) assets if they became available. Anglo American, which holds 80 percent of Amplats, said earlier this month that it was reviewing its investment in the worlds largest platinum producer. The platinum business has not matched the production, productivity and safety levels of earlier years while returns have been in decline. While Anglo has not ruled out spinning off what would be a $15-billion asset, analysts believe it is more likely to sell the mines or close certain shafts. We are very, very close to Anglo Platinum, we know all the inside discussions and we are engaging in that. I think something can come out of that, ARM CEO Andr Wilkens told Reuters in an interview after the group unveiled its first-half results. ARM, which has a 50 percent stake in two South African platinum mines, Modikwa and Two Rivers, is also evaluating three acquisitions in the platinum sector that could cost up to R6-billion.

Filling station targeted

The Sasol filling station was targeted by criminals in the early hours of Monday morning this week. According to a security company, three armed men held the personnel at the garage at gunpoint at about 03:00 on Monday while they broke into the office. They tried to blow open the door of the safe, but did not succeed. The men then took flight with the computer with the closed circuit television material from security cameras on it.

Migraines in children

Advertorial

It is estimated that 30-50% of school-age children and teenagers get headaches. Migraine headaches are also very common. They occur in about 3% of pre-schoolers, 11% of primary school students and 23% of high school students. Having other family members with migraine headaches would make it more likely in a child as this runs in families. Migraine attacks last between 1 hour and 72 hours. Symptoms Symptoms include a headache pain on one side of the head or moderate to severe pain on both sides of the head. A pulsing or throbbing headache pain. Nausea or vomiting, sensitivity to light, sensitivity to sound, an aversion to certain odours. Visual disruptions, muscle weakness and language impairment. Episodes of slow or slurred speech, ringing in the ears, double vision. Symptoms of migraines are also made worse by routine physical activities such as climbing stairs. Boys get more migraines than girls before they reach puberty. After puberty, girls are more inclined to get migraines. Keep a migraine symptom diary and record the details of your childs headache. Write down when he or she had it, what may have caused it, what made it better. From this you can learn what to avoid in future. Many children with migraines continue to have headaches as adults. About 25% will outgrow their headaches. Treatment Avoiding migraine triggers such as foods (cheese, chocolates and citrus fruits), poor sleep habits, lack of exercie and skipping meals. An age appropriate pain reliever can be taken. Medication ofr nausea could also be taken if vomiting forms part of the headache attacks. If a child is having at least three migraine attachs per month a medication preventing headaches can also be taken. As your doctor or pediatrician for help with the diagnosis and treatment of your childs headaches.

Is racism and politics the

According to recent research from the Institute of Race Relations in Johannesburg 90% of farm attacks are intended only as robbery. 2% of attacks are political or racially motivated. In 7% of cases it has to do with employment disputes. These figures were obtained from amongst others, police dockets from 1991 to 2003. More recent studies showed that people still have the perception that farm attacks are racially or politically motivated. Mr Boeta du Toit from Agri-North West last week said that they recognise that most attacks are pure crime driven acts, but do feel that irresponsible political statements could enhance a climate of racial intolerance and create an attitude of brutality. According to Du Toit there is also a misconception that farmers have large sums of money and weapons in their homes. Mr Solly Pheto from Cosatu reminded people that criminals carry out farm attacks and murders on farms, not farm workers. He said: Murder is unacceptable, no matter the motive. Farm attacks destroy the relationship between the farmers and their workers. We asked readers what they think about farm attacks and possible causes of farm attacks.

Ms Katlego Boshego said: Our black people dont understand labour law. They must go to the Department of Labour for help instead of attacking the employer. To fight and attack is not the solution, but unfortunately it still happens. Left: Mr Sello Mohubedu said: The big issue is starvation. People in South Africa are starving. Some places there is still racism left, but not always. People often break in and commit crimes to support their families.

Ms Lerato Napo and Ms Agnes Laka said: Farm attacks are often caused by poverty and money. People must have jobs - small businesses etc. because government cannot hire all of us. It is a bit of both - racism and poverty. People are poor and they feel white people owe them something. To poor black people, middle class white people look rich and they want that.

2% of attacks are political or racially motivated

90% of attacks are pure criminal intent

Right: Mr David Mooketsi said: I think farm attacks happen because of poverty, but mostly because of revenge and racism. For farmers there is often no stable payments. Many farmers are also stuck within apartheid. The law must bring equality. The new government has made people feel insecure.

Mr Niklaas Lesese said: Racism is still a problem and poverty too. The problem is that all of us are working, but we earn small money. We are suffering. Money is an issue also in farm attacks.

Ms Kim Engelbrecht said: Farm attacks are all about poverty. Not at all about racism. People are hungry. It is just very unfortunate that most farmers are white. With her is AJ.

Mr Sakkie Thobejane said: To decrease crime is to create jobs. Poverty is the major cause. People think they will be able to get money on the farms.

cause for farm attacks?

Mr Glen Seponye said: It is all about money. We all go to work to get money. Money motivates people. Without money there is no life. They turn to crime and farm attacks for money.

Mnr. Werner Klaassen s: Dis rasgeorinteer.

Ms Angel Kgopane said: It is a lack of information that causes it. Educational background is important. If you are educated you know what is wrong and what is good. There is also rich people who take advantage of poor people. They get them to do bad things for money. Poverty plays a role. Me. Alles is duur.

Mr Prince Mpuru said: The criminals think there is money on the farms. Create more jobs so people can earn their own money. Regs: Mnr Mandla Tjia s: Die boere moet die swart mense baie mooi hou. Daar is verskillende redes vir plaasaanvalle. 1. Me. Debbie Marais s: Dis baie keer inside information wat tot sulke misdade aanleiding gee. Misdaad is misdaad. By haar is Anne van Wyk. Regs: Mnr. By hom is JanHendrik.

Left: Ms. Comfort Mohlabe, Ms Cynthia Malomane and Ms Yolanda Morena said: It is a racial thing. It is because of people wanting to show government we want to take the farms back. That farmers should not occupy it. It is about taking back the land. It is also because of unemployment. The rate of unemployment is so high. Farmers should get more security from government otherwise it will get worse. People are trying to win the land back and we still have racist people around.
