On Feb. 24 the Wheatland Food Bank hit an all-time high number of hampers needing to be filled. Usually 10 to 12 hampers are filled on a weekly basis, but this past week there were 30 hampers filled to help the 54 adults and 21 children in need. There were still 10 applicants who had to be turned away, and will now be able to pick up their hamper this week. Groceries are going up in price and gas fluctuates so much, its all those little things that make a big difference when youre on an income that youve got no extra to fall back on, said Lorraine Farran, a volunteer with the Wheatland Food Bank. Farran is guessing there will be approximately 20 hampers this week, and expects the numbers to stay a little higher. I personally think it will probably stay up there at least 15 to 18 (hampers), said Farran. Every year in February the numbers climb above average, and the explanation the volunteers have come up with is that people have had to wait two months since their Christmas hamper. While it is normal to have to wait a twomonth period, Brenda Flowers, a volunteer with the Food Bank, said over Christmas people will use a lot more than normal. There are also many people who may have over spent during the holidays and are struggling to get back on their feet. What interested Farran and the other volunteers is the number of single people applying for a hamper. One theory is that the cost of rent is making it harder for people to survive these days. The food bank, of course, always needs the staples; pasta, rice, Cheese Whiz, soup, crackers and peanut butter. Two other important items people may not think of are childrens diapers and feminine hygiene products. We dont go out and buy detergent. If we get short on toilet paper and hand soap - we sometimes we can (run out) if we dont get any donations; but theyre the ones people seem to forget, said Farran. Continued on Page 2

Proposal for North Hill Heights development in Strathmore

Monday Special
Manny EvErEtt Times Contributor Strathmore is planning on growing according to a proposed new development called North Hill Heights, which was presented at the Travelodge on Thursday night. Town staff, Planner Brad Bevill, Director of Planning and Development Tammy Henry, Town Chief Administrative Officer Dwight Stanford, and Strathmore Mayor Steve Grajczyk, in addition to just over twenty residents, came out to the Travelodge on Thursday night, Feb. 23, to view the proposed development of North Hill Heights in Strathmore. This development, located in the northern newly annexed area of Strathmore, proposes residential and local commercial uses. Just over 500 lots will be developed in the nine-phase project. There are some beautiful 60ft lots that will be available right on the canal itself. There were no negative comments regarding the development. It is hoped that this particular Area Structure Plan will be at Council tentatively for first reading on April 4th and subsequent public hearing on May 16th. Two of North Hill Heights owners, Mickey Souray and Sobhi Abdallah, were present to display their proposal for the development of the new residential area north of Hillview in Strathmore along the canal. Patricia Maloney and Associates from Calgary, specializing in land use, strategic, First Nations, airport planning, community engagement and consultation is the developer hired for this

Drug Awareness Session made available to Strathmore Joyland Theatre Manny EvErEtt
Times Contributor Just over 30 parents, kids and community members assembled at the Strathmore Youth Club to participate in an information session about Kids and Drugs on Monday night, Feb. 27, hosted by SWAT (Strathmore Wheatland Addiction Team). Kids and Drugs: A Parents Guide to Prevention is a set of parent workshops designed for use in communities across Canada. The workshops are directed at parents who are concerned about preventing their children from drug use and exposure. People who want to raise their kids in smaller, rural areas are not exempt from the exposure and accessibility of drugs in their communities and neighborhoods. Granted the rate of drug use and abuse is higher in cities such as Calgary but Strathmore needs to be reminded that it is on a major drug route (Hwy #1) from B.C. to Ontario, says Constable Anne Daly of the RCMP detachment in Strathmore. Daly gave a synopsis to those gathered of the types of drugs that are commonly available in the area as well as effects of such drugs and street names. She also said that the information for those interested can easily be found on the internet and that education is a key in knowing about drugs and kids. Parents are a major influence on their children, whether they realize it or not. They are powerful role models, and they know their children better than anyone else does. Parents were encouraged to talk with their children openly about their (the kids) knowledge of drugs and their potential uses and availability in their schools and communities. Ask the questions point blank and generally you will get an answer or at least open up the doors of communication. Daly remarked that, youth are o.k. when (parents or those in authority) use a straight forward approach with them and will often be more open to talking about such things. Some of the warning signs from youth being involved with drugs and alcohol were discussed as follows: changes in school performance, loss of interest in school, sports or activities, the presence of new or different friends, defending a known drug user, requests for more spending money, seemingly unaccountable amounts of money, receiving expensive

gifts from friends. These are just some of the signs that parents and caregivers can be on the watch for in their youth. The main drugs Strathmore youth have accessibility to are: cannabis (marijuana), ecstasy and prescription drugs. The street values of drugs vary but it is becoming increasingly easier for young kids with allowances to buy inexpensive amounts. For example, the going rate for a joint is $5. Schools and community agencies can also have an important influence on the lives of young people. Therefore, parents may need to work in partnership with them to ensure that their children do not use drugs. Catherine Walsh with Alberta Health Services Addictions and Mental Health said, there are many resources available to parents and guardians in helping them help their kids. Addiction and Mental Health (403) 901-1326 and (403) 361-7277, a 24 Hour Help Line 1-866-332-2322, Strathmore RCMP (403) 934-3535, Distress Centre (403) 266-HELP, Child and Youth Services (403) 934-1706, Golden Hills School Division (403) 934-5121 and Holy Cross Collegiate (403) 901-2050 Because the consequences of using drugs can be significant, it is important for communities and families to know the facts and try to find ways to effectively manage these risks. Effectively delivered workshops on drug prevention that are specifically designed for parents can yield tremendous results in any community. 20th annual celebration for Parade of Nations

Manny EvErEtt Times Contributor Lord of All Lutheran Church in Strathmore held their 20th Annual Parade of Nations Supper and Entertainment evening on Saturday night at the Strathmore Civic Center. The first Parade of Nations event, in 1992, was held in the basement of the United Church and was attended by 54 people. This past weekend 424 people were fed at the Strathmore Civic Center for the 20th Annual Event. Lord of All Lutheran Church spearheaded this event and has remained an integral part of this eagerly anticipated night. Over 170 people are part of the congregation, which represents 12 out of the 17 different countries (34 per cent from the U.K., 28 per cent German, 13 per cent Danish, 6 per cent Norwegian, 6 per cent Dutch). The night always begins with a Flag Bearing Ceremony of all the nationalities represented and the singing of the National Anthem, this year led by Karlie Thurn. After Grace was said by Lord of Alls Pastor Dawn Nelson, people were then free to go and partake of the different ethnic foods available to them at the different booths. Participants were urged to enjoy the international menu and Travel the world without leaving the room and experience the cuisine and flavour of each nation as you visit the booths. The Calgary Fiddlers provided the entertainment for the evening.

A fire broke out late Saturday evening in Rockyford at approximately 11:45 p.m. The former lumberyard building was fully engulfed when emergency crews responded to the scene. No one was injured in the blaze, though assistance from Rosebud, Dalum, Standard and Strathmore Rural Fire Departments was needed. An electrical malfunction seems to have started the fire said Wayne Clyne, Rockyfords Fire Chief. They were able to contain the blaze to the building itself.

In March the three choirs will also be heading to the Kaleidoscope Theatre in the Drumheller Valley High School to participate in the Drumheller and District Music Festival. I enjoy having the Brentwood students participating in both festivals. The quality of choral singing at Calgary Festival is very high, said Carolyn Steeves, Brentwoods Music director. It is very motivating to the young choristers at our school. It is also a very neat performing experience to sing on the Jubilee Auditorium stage. The students look forward to both trips and work hard to prepare new repertoire in a very short timeframe. The students will be singing the same songs at Drumheller and District Music Festival, which will give them plenty of time to get their songs down pat.

Start early for best results!

We have a few things to finalize though we are hoping to begin running programs out of the centre in March, said Colina Clark, program coordinator for the Youth Club of Strathmore. As in any project, materials are needed to ensure the projects success. The Youth Club of Strathmore has a vision, and that vision is to provide quality programs for our community. Id like to see a well rounded facility so that we can offer more programs for more community members. The Youth Club has a wish list of some of the items they are hoping for. It includes a stereo and speakers, a microphone and speakers, round caf tables, caf chairs, a file cabinet, telephone, newer computers and software, and kitchen supplies. The items are needed, something to work toward. For instance, the kitchen supplies are needed because we now have our own kitchen to run our Chef program out of. It is a very popular program. Previously, we relied on our community supporters kitchens to operate the program successfully, said Clark. Not only is there a need for some material items, Clark said the Youth Club is also still looking for volunteers to lead the programs, and for a volunteer coordinator. Clark said the club will be offering two sessions of eight week programming, in March/April and May/June. The programs include Mad Science, Chef, Extreme Kids, Jr. Leadership and Sr. Leadership. Wed also like to offer workshops: 1st Aid, Babysitting, Bullying, Keep It Kool, Self-Esteem along with Drug Awareness which SWAT recently hosted. All of the workshops would be based on interest and available facilitators. In addition, we will be offering summer camp again this year, with registration beginning in May, said Clark. Gas Saving
With the price of fuel on the rise right across the Country, taking advantage of just a few of the tips provided will save you money at the pumps. Speed One of the biggest ways to reduce your gas bill is to slow down. On the highway, 93km/h is the most fuel-efficient speed to drive. For every 10km/h over this limit, you are burning an extra 10% of your fuel. The average speed on the highway seems to be around 113km/h so every car is wasting 20% extra gas. Defrost Your front windshield defroster uses the air conditioner to clean your windshield of ice and frost. All very good and safe, you must remember to turn it off as soon as the job is done. Many people drive around with this turned on for the entire winter, so their car is working 20% harder to power the air conditioner, which powers the defroster. Idling We all know that idling our car is a bad idea on so many levels. You are wasting 20% of your fuel when you sit still with your car running. Drive-thru, school pick-ups and drop-offs, waiting for someone to run into a store.... these are all places where we idle. Turn off the engine whenever you can. Save the environment from the emissions coming from your tailpipe and save your gas. Service Servicing your car is absolutely vital to its performance and fuel-efficiency. Make sure you go to your dealer or local garage at least twice a year for oil changes and routine maintenance. Have them inspect your tires for wear, rotate them, and check tire pressure, also checking brakes and keeping the air filter clean and clear will help the overall gas consumption dramatically. Topping up the tank When you fill up, dont top up! Stop when it clicks off, or the gas will overflow or evaporate.

Dont let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do

Season with dried basil, pepper, onion powder and celery salt. Mix well and set aside. Arrange fillets in a single layer on the prepared pan. Broil a few inches from the heat for 2 to 3 minutes. Flip the fillets over and broil for a couple more minutes. Remove the fillets from the oven and cover them with the Parmesan cheese mixture on the top of fish. Broil for 2 more minutes or until the topping is brown. Be careful not to over cook the fish.

Letters to the editor

Scrapping the city status discussion

To the Editor The wonderful thing about living in this country is that you can disagree with people - even those in authority. With this in mind, and with respect, I have to disagree with the Mayors position in regards to Strathmore applying for city status. Clearly, I am not convinced that businesses focus on whether a potential site is either a town or a city. My discussions with other mayors whose towns did become a city suggest there are three things that businesses will look at when deciding to move in - location (proximity to airports or major roads), amenities in the municipality and whether profit can be realized. My research into this matter also brought me to the Town of Okotoks (population 25,000) where I learned that a very intensive study into this issue was conducted in 2009. Their decision to NOT become a city was based on the costs involved in the process and a decision that the benefits did not justify the effort. One thing everyone is agreed on is that there is no benefit (i.e. grant money from the Provincial Government), as this is based on population, and not on status. I should also note that three of the 30 highestpopulated municipalities in this country continue to identify themselves as Towns (Oakville, Richmond and Markham, Ontario) and suspect that, with a joint population of over 650,00 people, their voices are heard loud and clear. Another concern I have in this regard is that this does not appear to be driven, or widely supported, by the citizens of this town. The citizens I have spoken to tend to enjoy the concept of living in a Town. In fact, I have heard from a number of constituents who moved to Strathmore from a city BECAUSE it was a town. This may be only semantics, but it appears the word Town gives the impression of a slower and more relaxed way of life - something most of us desire. This is a matter where your opinion and input WILL make a difference. Please attend the information session (date to be determined in the near future), and feel free to contact either the Mayor or any member of Council with your opinion! Bob Sobol Town Councillor

Saying no for a different status

To the Editor It is time for us all to stand up and have our collective voices heard and Say No! We all know the result of having a plebiscite. It costs us the Tax Payer money and the result is not legally binding. No to becoming a city. We are a small town and proud of it. Higher taxes, larger administration and administrative salaries, less say in our future, etc. No to a road through the wetland connecting Wheatland Trail and Thomas Drive. The wet land needs to be preserved and another set of lights on Wheatland Trail is ridiculous. While on the subject of wet land what is going on at the north end? Housing Development? No to building a new Town Office at the newly purchased property near Kinsmen park. If the land is intended to increase Kinsmen Park why was it purchased at the value of Residential Development Property instead of the value of the less expensive category Park Land? No to the current Town Office becoming a Museum or Art Gallery Even though a Museum is long awaited other options need to be explored. No to paying for the potable water and sewer that is used by the AG Society. Put a meter on them just the same as everyone else. No to the Town Parks Staff trucking potable water to the parks. Other viable options are available. No to the road expansion or twinning of George Freeman Trail. If the road is in such high demand the developers adjacent to this road should pay for it instead of all of us Tax Payers. Remember Councils motto No subsidizing the few by the many. This also means No to a new bridge crossing the canal on George Freeman Trail. If the heavy traffic by developers and contractors for the adjacent property they need to pay for it and again not us The Tax Payer. No to the new development at the former water treatment plant property using any water from the WID Canal unless they make their own application. We as Tax Payers in Strathmore are only allotted a certain amount of acre feet of water from that source and will the Town Administration release all of the facts in the current water permit that has been submitted on our behalf? A note to Council: You all campaigned on that you inherited the problems from the previous council and that you were going to right the ship. Get us on track by getting us an administration that has a clear vision of our future and fiscal responsibility. Council gets voted in and out, but we still have the same administration. The next council will inherit the same problems as you did unless you get things under control now. We are all in this together, Mr. John M. Whieldon Strathmore

Carseland Public Benefit Club

Carseland publiC benefit Club Since 1912 the Carseland Public Benefit Clubs intention has been to augment programs for those in need as well as provide a service to improve community welfare. As a not-for-profit organization, the PB Club exists solely to promote the health, well being, safety, and education of the general population of the Carseland district. For ninety-nine years the PB Club attempts to fill or enhance any void in needed service areas that relate or affect Carseland and its surrounding population. The PB Club is not facility driven, nor sports or agriculturally focused, but has supported a variety of populations within the larger county area (i.e.: seniors, children, maternity, voluntary associations). Historically the PB Club has been for female members only. However this was more due to the fact that the men were either working the land or serving in the armed forces. The division of labor was so much more distinct back then; females predominantly did stitching and cooking. In 1998, open membership was discussed and it was agreed that any community member was welcome to join. There has yet to be a male member. The Carseland Public Benefit Club does have a broad-based membership of ladies living in and around Carseland township. In April 2012 the Club will celebrate their 100th Anniversary. Because their original undertakings included extensive support to the Red Cross (for example: knitting socks for deployed soldiers, sewing bandages and slings, and maintaining a Prisoner of War Fund) they have chosen a military theme to celebrate their centennial. The Club believes the power of future community success lies within our next generation and, in this theme, has invited the Alberta Army Cadet League to participate in their celebration; showcasing their training, discipline and commitment of youth to building our nation. Feature Decade: 2003 2012 Feature Decade Member: Mrs. trudy page Trudy Page (Bethune) married her husband, Rick, in 1975. They moved onto a farm just north of Carseland to raise their three children. Trudy taught grades two and three at the Carseland School for eighteen years before retiring in 2002. Since coming to the district she has been one of the communitys people whom can be relied on to volunteer when there is a job that needs doing. She has been a volunteer for the Ag Society and the Carseland library, a member of the curling club, a secret pal, and instrumental in helping to organize many community events throughout the years. (Trudy keeps, Zelda, the bale lady landmark on #901 dressed.) They finally were able to perform their shows for parents and grandparents last week in the Standard School stage. The children participated in every aspect of their performances including set design, and costuming. An enjoyable afternoon was had by all. Un-Handy Man II: Revenge of the Waterbed

pat fule Fule for Thought Again, Id like to dedicate this column to all the other men out there, who are less than handy in household, yard, mechanical, metal, or wood repairs. Im with you, brother (Can I get an Amen?!)! This is the sequel to my struggles on the roof, during my earliest attempts at fixing something in a house. Back in the day waterbeds were very popular. They were nice and warm in winter, they moved a bit to rock you to sleep, and they still supported your weight. In that same first house, we had decided to take apart (disaster spoiler alert!), and move the bed to the lowest level of our split-level. So, a friend and I took it apart and moved everything to the basement. Unfortunately, he had to leave, and I was left to my own devices. I set up the platform so that it was even, level, and square (insert applause here!). Then I worked on screwing the edge of the bed-frame together into its proper square shape. I had thought that assembling it on the floor, then moving it to the bed for its attachment to the bed platform was quite logical. Proudly, I called for Debbie to come down so that she could help me carry it to the platform where it would be screwed down (she came, she saw, she laughed). I said, great, I get it it took a long time, and its still not done! This was met by louder and longer laughter (I was now getting frustrated!). Now, Debs laughter became those silent ones, where you cant speak, and your eyes tear! Debbie frantically pointed to my newly built frame. I cant help you, she choked out. Look Debbie, its not that heavy, its close to the platform, well carry it over no big deal! Look where youve built it, Pat! Those were the only words she could get out, before laughing again. There to my shock, was the answer. I had assembled the bed frame (and perfectly, I might add) AROUND the basement telepost! So in other words, there was no way to move the frame as the pole was stuck in the center of the frame! Quickly, I fixed the mistake as Debbie returned upstairs laughing (she mightve also been calling her parents to tell them the news). So, we put the frame on the platform and I screwed it in place. Then came the mattress, and the filling of water began. I actually overfilled the mattress and had to get a hose (luckily, we had a floor drain in the unfinished basement)! Debbie arrived in time to see me sucking on one end of the hose at the floor drain, so that it would empty into the drain. Nothing was happening I kept sucking on the end of the hose, hoping it was clean. Once more, my efforts were met with laughter (this was starting to get old). In between her laughs and tears, she blurted out, shouldnt you connect the other end to the mattress?! Wow I had forgotten to do that! I was sucking on the end of a hose that was never attached to the mattress! My cheeks were sore (so was my pride), and I sadly walked to the bed to connect the hose. Eventually, I was able to drain the bed to the right amount, and once again, I became the master of this home improvement task. We wound up getting rid of our two waterbeds before we moved to our next house. I agreed with Deb that they might be bad for our backs, but really I just wanted to ditch the bad handy man evidence. I think her sister got the waterbeds I secretly hoped they had a basement with lots of teleposts!! (Fule for Thought is a slice of life humourous column that will appear in the Strathmore Times, written by longtime resident, town councillor, high school teacher, coach, husband and father of two Pat Fule. Marigold outlines funding structure for council

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor

Michelle Toombs, Director of Marigold Library System, addressed the reason smaller libraries had recent pleas for extra money. It is true some of our smaller libraries are in dire need of funds, said Toombs. She went on to outline the services required by the individual libraries under their contracts. She also described the services provided to those libraries

by Marigold. Libraries are required to provide facilities, furniture and equipment, upkeep, staff salaries and benefits and all utilities. Marigold, one of seven such library systems in Alberta, provides computer networks with IT staff, video conferencing infrastructure and support, material of various kinds, professional consultation and training services, acquisitions, cataloguing and processing, delivery of materials, marketing, TRACpac online catalogue, electronic resources, paperback by mail and deposit and cards that can be used Alberta wide. Libraries are not just about buildings anymore, said Toombs, who pointed out technology is making a

vast amount of information available in a virtual format. Dollar for dollar, Marigold offers a positive return for the per capita investment made by Wheatland County. For approximately 3 per cent investment, Wheatland is getting an 11 per cent value, said Toombs. She noted that those libraries without a board pay smaller per capita rates; however, they did not qualify for an annual provincial operating grant that would provide and extra $6,840 to the smaller libraries. Boards also take on private and corporate fundraising duties, apply for various grants and provide direction for the libraries. We feel they (the libraries) need that or they are not sustainable, said

Toombs. She challenged the councillors to help the smaller libraries remain viable as there are many community benefits to having a library. Police say libraries reduce crime, said Toombs, as they keep youth off the streets, offer education and help for the unemployed. She said that Marigold would like to continue to work with Wheatland County to provide the best possible library system available for county residents. Councillors agreed the presentation was very informative and would be valuable as they discuss the issue at the upcoming budget meeting and Community Enhancement in early March.

Previous Interim Chief Administrative Officer, Shirley Reinhardt, has moved into the position of CAO for Wheatland Housing. According to the policy and procedures manual for the agency, positions can be awarded in house without outside postings. I talked to residents at the lodge. They were extremely happy with the decision and the recent changes, said Councillor Bernice Bland. The need To know Councillors discussed the need for more information from fellow councillors sitting on various boards. Brenda Knight gave the example of waiting for information that was not forthcoming from a request she had made to Wheatland Housing. I have requests from several ratepayers with questions about housing, said Knight. She suggested that if the taxpayers are giving money to various agencies, they should have the right to information from those agencies. There was a suggestion that those funded agencies submit the minutes and financial information as information for the public. Councillors noted that representatives who sit on the committees already update council with information as they attend meetings. However, there was concern that not enough, and not the right kind of information was available to address the ratepayers questions. Other council members noted that there may be Freedom of Information infractions and some agencies meet-

Council decided to discuss the matter again at an organization meeting to come up with a formula which would address ratepayers needs, and respect and protect confidentiality issues. educaTion funding clarified Council is meeting with Golden Hills School Division on Feb. 21, to clarify rules surrounding the Municipal Reserve funding. Golden Hills School Division and the Catholic School Division split approximately $1.7 million in education funding. Subdivision developers are required to contribute to this fund and the county takes cash in lieu which is released to the schools. The schools address their request for funds to the council and the subdivision appeal board. There has been some confusion by people that the county is required to provide land and services, said Councillor Glen Koester, about new school buildings. This issue will be clarified at the meeting. Too many goaTs and complimenTary haying A small acreage owner has requested to hay land on vacant lots in Cluny. He is currently looking after the lots and otherwise, the county would have to send crews out to mow the property. On further investigation, one of the lots still had an old land title in Viterras name that was supposed to be transferred to the county and all the lots concerned were zoned as residential, so the lots would have to be designated to agricultural, for the lots to be farmed. In addition, the acreage owner was keeping more goats than was allowed on his acreage allotment. The maximum amount of goats allowed on three acres is five. Council moved that the land title change would be given first reading and be given a public hearing, and the question of haying and the goats would be dealt with subsequently. handi-bus supporTed The Valley Bus Society was given $2,000 by Wheatland Council to support and maintain bus services within the Wheatland area. I am glad to have opportunity to have a conversation with you. Every municipality has its challenges and I am here to listen to those, said Davies. He addressed councils concerns about the 50-cent per capita levy fees, equal fee structure and board representation issues. He said that all those issues were slated in the AGM meeting held during the CBL conference set for March 28-29. The association, comprised of 63 municipal shareholders, is forming an investment foundation that would issue tax receipts for donations. As CBL is a not-for-profit charity, it cannot issue tax receipts. He noted that the CBL cycle of grants was ending in 2012. They were starting to generate innovative ideas such as an IPhone app and re-inaction weekends that allow people to dress up in period costume and participate in theme events. Councillor Alice Booth, who is on the CBL board, said the group was moving forward and gaining momentum. The CBL is becoming a tourism template for the whole province, said Booth. council goes high Teach It was MS versus Apple, as councillors debated the pros and cons of replacing their obsolete computers with more up-to-date equipment. Technical advisers demonstrated the merits of IPads vs. laptops to the council and outlined the pros and cons of each. A picture is worth a thousand words

Manny everett Times Contributor

They say a picture is worth a thousand words and is a treasury of memories. In the digital age so many of the photographs we take are disposable because we can always retrieve them on computers or phones, but in the not so recent past, one relied on film and negatives. If those were lost, so were your pictures. At the end of January, Ron Elder (an employee of Agrium in Standard) was driving on Highway 561 south of Standard when he came across a paisley fabric bag in the middle of the highway near Range Road 223. Elder stopped his vehicle and went to inspect what seemingly looked like garbage which had been thrown from another vehicle. Upon inspection, Elder was amazed at what he found: a treasury of old photographs in the fabric bag dating back to the early 1900s. After bringing them back to Standard, the office staff looked through the photographs for any names or addresses they could follow up on to get them back to their original owners. The pictures were all in black and white and some were still in their original cardboard portfolios (as was done in the past before the digital age). They ranged in size from 3x3s to 8x10s. Pictures of infants and many wedding pictures were part of the contents as well as a group pic-

ture of The Orangemans Society. The group of men in the photo, which had Orangemens Society on it, is unique, and is not a group the Agrium office had heard of before. After further investigation on the Internet it was found that a bit of a history lesson was in order. Orangemen, members of the Loyal Orange Institution, familiarly called the Orange Order, a Protestant Irish society founded and flourishing mainly in Ulster. It was established (1795) to maintain the Protestant ascendancy in Ireland in the face of the rising agitation for Catholic Emancipation. Its name is taken from the family name of King William III of England, who defeated King James II in the battle of the Boyne in 1690. July 12, the anniversary of this victory, is the principal holiday of the order, on which the members wear orange-colored flowers and orange sashes and march in parades; parades passing through Catholic sections of Northern Irish cities have been a source of interreligious friction. Branches of the society have been formed in many parts of the English-speaking world. (from infoplease.com). No one has picked up the lost photos yet. They surely are a treasure to someone and were accidently lost through a move from the back of a truck. If anyone knows who the owners might be please call the Agrium office in Standard at (403) 644-3883 to claim them.

After a bag of old photographs was found in January, staff at the Standard Agrium have been trying to locate their owner. A series of photos all in great condition laid out.

Barcodes come to Siksika Nation Health system

Manny everett Times Contributor

In a continuation to upgrade the health care system at Siksika Nation, early last fall the CHIP (Community Health and Immunization Program) was introduced to help with immunization tracking of First Nations Peoples on and off the reserve. The newest innovation will be the implementing of the GS1 bar code standard on commercially available vaccines to improve their management and delivery as a key component of Canadas National Immunization Strategy. The Siksika and Stoney health centers will be among the first in the world to use vaccine barcode scanning to automatically record information, such as the vaccine type, lot number, dose and expiry date at the time of vaccination. This is expected to eliminate data entry error, which has been shown to be as high as 20 per cent in registries that rely on manual inputting. This initiative is an example of First Nations

leading in innovation and partnership, and setting the bar for the rest of the health system, says Tyler White, CEO of Siksika Health Services. Siksika and Stoney First Nations were the first to join the Community Health & Immunization Program (CHIP), a flexible, secure and simple system for electronically managing patients vaccination records. CHIP was developed to address a longstanding public health disparity. First Nations in Alberta have high rates of patients under- and over-immunized because of an incomplete, inaccurate, and antiquated approach to vaccination records, says Dr. Salim Samanani, Medical Director of OKAKI, which created CHIP in partnership with First Nations communities. With the addition of 2D bar code scanning, we continue to approach the goal of creating the safest, most effective and cutting edge immunization program for the protection of child and public health. Siksika Nation continues to be a front runner for many innovative ideas and programs to better the Health services for first Nations people.

Childrens festival is coming to town

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter

The youth in Strathmore are going to be celebrated on March 10 at the first ever Childrens Festival. The idea started to kind of come last year after Strathmore was on the receiving end of some negativity with the ecstasy overdose and graffiti, said organizer Melissa David. I think the youth were being painted in kind of a bad light, and since we had just done the Pet Expo we were hearing things about other places having different kinds of childrens festivals and youth days and stuff like that. After questioning why Strathmore doesnt have anything like that, David decided to get a group together to bring it here. She said Encana has been fabulous and once they caught wind of what she and her group were trying to do they wanted to help out. David said local businesses have also been supportive with the initiative and also have been lending a helping hand. David says there will be plenty of things for all ages including face painters and balloon

twisters. She admits it can be a little tougher to find things for the older youth, but that there are a few things lined up. Mary Kay and Arbonne are going to come and do some makeup demonstrations, and Play N Trade is going to come and do some mobile gaming stations so kids can play X-box and Wii and well have a crafts table, it should be pretty good, said David. The idea is once people are in the doors, the face painting, all that is all going to be free. We will be taking donations. I just have been envisioning it to be a really fun festival-type atmosphere where kids can come in and just have a blast. Being affordable for everyone is huge too, its tough to do something with a family thats affordable these days. David said public speaker Cory Johnson will be in attendance, as will Mayor Steve Grajczyk. Each child through the door will also get a free cookie thanks to Sobeys. Anyone interested in volunteering, or just finding out more can go to the Facebook page, Strathmore Childrens Festival Presented by Encana. David said she updates every time someone new gets involved with the festival.

The Wheatland Kings battled back from a 2-0 deficit, but ultimately fell 4-2 in the best-of-seven series after a 3-2 loss in double overtime in Game 6 Feb. 25 at the Strathmore Family Centre.

On Feb. 24 and 25 the Crowther Memorial Junior Highs senior girls basketball team hosted home tournament, coming away with yet another first place finish. Out of the seven tournaments they have competed in they have placed first in four of them and second in three of them.

Kings never give up

Mario Prusina Times Editor The Wheatland Kings deserved a better fate. That was the thought of head coach Doug Murphy immediately after his team was eliminated from the Heritage League playoffs this past weekend. It was a great game with the wrong outcome, said Murphy after a 3-2 double overtime loss to the Cochrane Generals in Game 6 on Feb. 25 at the Strathmore Family Centre. Tonight we outplayed them, we outchanced them. We just couldnt put it away. We couldnt score, its a tough way (to end the season). Its frustrating because the guys played so well and they improved so much this season Im absolutely proud to death of every single guy in that room. After falling behind 2-1 in the best-of-seven series, the Kings battled back with the solid effort in Game 4, winning 7-4 on Feb. 22 at the Strathmore Family Centre. The Kings had glorious chances early in Game 5, but couldnt find the net en route to a 6-1 loss on Feb. 24. After trailing 2-0 in Game 6 on home ice, the Kings battled back to force overtime, before falling short in their quest for a league championship. We would have liked to force it to one more game anyway, said an emotional coach. It has been a great run here the last part of the season and into the playoffs. We can take and build
Despite a close series, the UFA Bisons were eliminated from the post season after suffering a 2-1 loss in double overtime of Game 2 Feb. 25 at the Strathmore Family Centre.

Bisons eliminated in close series

Mario Prusina Times Editor In the final weekend of the regular season, the UFA Bisons finally started playing the type of hockey that made them a successful hockey club. During the first-round of the AMHL playoffs, it was not enough. The UFA Bisons dropped two close games to the Calgary Buffaloes, losing 5-4 in Game 1 on Feb. 22 in Calgary, before falling 2-1 in double overtime in Game 2 Feb. 25 at the Strathmore Family Centre. Despite playing well enough to win the series, the Bisons are struggling to pinpoint where things went wrong. Its tough to put your finger on it, said Bisons head coach Jeremy Friesen after being eliminated. I thought it was a very evenly matched series and both games were separated by one goal thats the difference. They did a pretty good job backing off our D and they created time and space in the middle of the ice. They really have a lot of skill down low and they do a good job using that net both winning goals in both games were guys coming out on the other side (of the net to score). You look in Game 1, both teams had three power play goals and in Game 2, neither team had one, so I thought it was a pretty even series, two evenly balanced teams. At the end of the day, they made two more plays than we did.

Mario Prusina Photos

According to Friesen, he was proud of the way his team battled back from deficits in both games. He said his team gave the Buffs all they could handle in the short best-of-three series. However, the Bisons never took their game to the next level. No, I dont think we saw our best hockey, said Friesen. Our level of play in the Macs (Midget Hockey Tournament) we had four lines and six D just going nonstop. Here we had some guys pull back a little bit and a lot of that has to do with pressure. Your time and space and sense of urgency just has to be there come playoff time. I think the guys just took it for granted a little bit (the way we played at the Macs) was the way we were just going to keep playing. I dont think we ever got back on track as far as putting in that work ethic and putting in the commitment level. However, all-in-all we came here and gave it everything we had. I would honestly tell you we left everything on the ice and didnt leave anything to chance. Despite not advancing further in the post season, Friesen said this season was a success because they prepared all the members to become better players in the future. Even though the team was disappointed in the loss, they can take solace in the success they did have, particularly in the aforementioned Macs Tournament. Im very proud of all of our guys, said Friesen. It was a fun year and all these guys have a bright future ahead of them.

on the experience we got now and carry that into next season. Weve moved the bar immensely from last year to this year the skill level has gone up, the speed has gone up, the level of commitment of the guys has increased so much. There is not a comparison between the two years. The Kings faced adversity all season, including a six-game losing streak where they had a number of injuries. However, the team battled through it and earned the third seed in the division and a first-round playoff bye. That trend continued in the playoffs, where the team battled back in games and came back from a two-game deficit. Its just a sort of way the guys have evolved they dont quit, explained Murphy. You look around at the better teams (in the league) and they find ways to win. Cochrane has done that for years they just find a way to make it happen. Weve started to do that find ways to win. According to Murphy, the key is to improve on that next season. Despite losing some key players like captain Mark Goodman, Tyler Brandon and Graham Douglas to graduation and a handful of young players expected to play junior-A the nucleus should remain intact and ready for next year. There is a lot of potential for this team, absolutely, said Murphy. If we can pick up a few new guys coming up, its going to be a great season next year.

The circus is coming to Strathmore

shannon leclair Times Reporter The Circus Comes to Town is the name of the upcoming skate carnival being put on by the Strathmore Skate Club. The carnival is an annual year-end show, and each year it follows a different theme. The circus theme was just kind of something different, and something that hopefully will be colourful and interesting, said coach Leanne Woodcock. The carnival is set to take place on March 11, beginning at 1 p.m. at the Family Centre. Woodcock said the show will have lots going on and there will be more interaction and more action than in some of the past carnivals. No circus is complete without an elephant, and Woodcock said there will also be some monkeys, mice, horses, acrobatics, tightrope walkers, plenty of clowns, and a bear. There are also two teams coming from the Calgary Synchronized Skating Club, the Black Gold pre-novice team and the Black Gold open team. The carnival is held as a way to showcase the talents of the skaters, while raising funds for the club. We use it as a fundraiser to help out with subsidizing the programs, and that its the wrap up for the CanSkates, and to show the parents the talent of the kids, where they progress from, said Woodcock. Some of them couldnt even stand at beginning of the yearand to see them skate and do fundamental movements is probably pretty exciting for most parents, and theyre cute. Children five and under are free and for six and older it is $5 a ticket.

Ice Cats starting to wind down

Mel Boschee Strathmore Ice Cats Ringette The last couple of weeks have been interesting for the Ice Cats. Understanding that the later in the season, the not only the Ice Cats honed their skills, but their competition did as well. Feb. 11 brought the Cochrane Rockies (Black) to town. It seemed in the first period nothing was going right for the Ice Cats. Defense was not solid which allows Cochrane to ta the lead of 6-2 after the first period. In the second period there was a slight lineup shuffle which then seen the Ice Cats spring alive. Cochrane was held to only three goals while the Ice Cats put six behind the netminder. Cochrane scored with only nine seconds left in the game handing the Ice Cats with a 9-8 loss. Feb. 18 brought Indus Lightning (Yellow) to the arena. The Ice Cats were ready to play but again the first period was a travesty. The Ice Cats were shut out the first period with Indus leading 7-0. The second period the Ice Cats started to flourish and scored eight goals. It was not enough though as Indus would not let up. They also scored another six goals, handing the Ice Cats a 13-8 loss. Feb. 19 the Ice Cats were headed out of their home town. Maybe that would change their luck. Off the Cochrane the Ice Cats were to take on Cochrane Rockies (Red). The Ice Cats were nervous as they stepped on the ice. The Ice Cats were putting a lot of pressure on themselves, and as the ring rushed around the ice, the Ice Cats were not letting the game slip away. It was a 4-4 tie after the first period. The second period started and the Ice Cats were hissing and clawing to stay in the game as the Rockies scored two quick goals. The Ice Cats answered with two goals of their own, with one goal waived off. Showing strong defense and offense and seeming to hit the post a lot, when the final buzzer sounded and the crowd at the edge of their seat, the final score was 9-9. The Ice Cats go home with a tie in their pocket. Ice Cat goals scored by: Justine Larson, Ainsley Olson, Shelby Lane, Cayley Boschee, Laura Sader, Mackenzie Hansen, Reagan Bogusky, Hannah Arsenault, Payton Jensen. There was tremendous teamwork shown with the passing and encouragement of Megan Brooks, Mackenzie Duggan, Avery Aleman, Makayla Grant and Tessa Davidson. No games are scheduled for the next week and the wind-up tournament March 31. This doesnt mean the team will be off until the final weekend. The Ice Cats will be excelling at practices to learn and perfect the plays Coaches Lana Lane, Casey Gran and Kevin Brooks are sharing with them. Great work girls!

Braves battle to bitter end

Mario Prusina Times Editor A little bit of puck-luck would have helped the Wheatland Braves in their first-round series versus the Innisfail Flyers. After falling 8-6 in Game 1 on home ice in Hussar on Feb. 22, the local double-A peewee team couldnt catch a break in Game 2, falling 4-3 on Feb. 24, bowing out of the SCAHL playoffs. Despite playing a solid team game, especially in the second outing, the Braves fought tooth and nail with the Flyers, making head coach Keith Klemmensen proud of his troops. Ill tell you what, they played a heck of a game, said the coach of Game 2. At the end of the day, I wasnt disappointed in our effort in that last game at all. I indicated earlier in the year we left a lot of goals in the ice after Christmas here, and the same thing happened (in Game 2). We probably had four or five goal-posts and that was the difference. The Flyers stormed out of the gates in Game 1, earning a 5-1 lead before the Braves battled back and made it a one-goal game again at 6-5 and 7-6, before the eventual loss. According to Klemmensen, the difference in the series was quite evident. I think in the first game, Innisfail elevated their level of play, he said. Innisfail got better as the season went on I have to give them credit. We were too flat coming out of the first game and it was too much to overcome. In the second game in Innisfail, we matched them we were ahead 3-2 with seven minutes left and they got a power play and got a goal thats what happens. Thats hockey. I had some kids play the best hockey of their careers and at the end of the day when they play their best game, Ive got to be very happy with them. Despite the SCAHL season being over, the Braves have earned a berth in the Provincial Championship tournament later next month. The Braves will use the time off to heal injuries, play in a couple of exhibition games and put everything on the line in the tournament. According to Klemmensen, regardless of how things play out in provincials, he is proud of his team. There are 10 first-year guys on that team at the end of the day, nobody in the league comes close to (that youth), he said. Against the top teams in the league, we were very good it was a very successful season. Chiefs earn bye After their second-place finish in the North Division, the Wheatland Chiefs have earned a first-round bye in the SCAHL midget playoffs. The local double-A midget team, who closed out the season with a pair of games this past weekend, will have to wait for their first playoff opponent while the third seed battles the sixth seed and the fourth and fifth seeds tangle in the opening round. Warriors host Lightning After earning a first-round bye, the Wheatland Warriors open the 2012 SCAHL playoffs against the Airdrie Lightning. The local double-A bantam team hosts Airdrie March 1 (6:15 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre, before going to Airdrie on March 3 (4:45 p.m.) for the second contest. Game 3, if necessary, will take place at the Strathmore Family Centre on March 4 (1:30 p.m.).

JOHANSON,

Barbara Lynne August 7, 1948 February 26, 2012

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend Barb on February 26, 2012. Barb was raised on the family farm at Carseland, Alberta where she enjoyed everything about farm life, especially riding her horses. After graduating, Barb moved to Calgary where she attended SAIT and later worked at the General Hospital where she made many lifelong friends. In Barbs younger days, she enjoyed travelling to Europe and Australia with her cousin and friends. Barb was always a country girl at heart and when her MS became more of a challenge, she returned to the country to live at her Uncle Steves place, where she lived happily until her passing. She entertained her many friends, neighbours, and cousins at her place in the country and delighted in sharing in their lives. She was quick to laugh and saw humour in many places. Although Barb was often in pain, she always greeted you with a smile and a twinkle in her eye. Barb was predeceased by her mother Stella, and father Jack. She is survived by her brother Steve and his wife Cheryl and their children Dan, Devin, Andrew and Becka; her treasured friend Dorothy Carnine; as well as her many cousins who were very dear to her and a great support. A heartfelt thank you is extended to Leanne Owel and all the home care staff for the wonderful care they provided for Barb throughout the years. A celebration of Barbs life will be held on Friday, March 2, 2012 at Strathmore United Church at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to Strathmore District Health Foundation For Home Care (200 Brent Blvd., Strathmore, AB, T1P 1J9).
