Finding your way around Arts London


London College of Fashion
Location: LCF has six sites: Lime Grove, John Princes Street, Davies Street, Curtain Road, Golden Lane and Mare Street. The universitys student Hub is located at the Davies Street site by Bond Street station. Who needs a better excuse for a pint at lunch? Number of students: Over 4000 Courses: Fashion: from design to marketing and promotion. The college also offers courses in beauty and specialised make up design. Notable alumni: Top names in fashion have graduated from LCF including LK Bennetts Linda Bennett, Patrick Cox (shoe designer, pictured) and Jimmy Choo OBE (shoe designer). Brief history: It all started in 1906 with Shoreditch Technical Institute Girls School and later Barrett Street Trade School in 1915. Girls as young as 12 were trained in dressmaking, embroidery, hairdressing and beauty. The two schools merged in 1967 to form LCF. What the students say: The reputation is amazing and thats the reason I came here. I have access to footwear machinery and all the tools I need - and the teachers are really enthusiastic, Lizzy Dunn, 19, FdA footwear student. Events/exhibitions: Continuing into November are the free State of Independenz events which celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Indias Independence. A series of lectures by film-makers, designers and photographers of British/South Asian origin. (www.fashion.arts.ac.uk/events) Did you know? LCF was awarded CoolBrands status for 2007/08 putting them alongside other CoolBrands such as Aston Martin, Chanel and Vivienne Westwood. (CoolBrands is an initiative to identify the UKs most fashionable brands, and status is achieved by a combination of consumer votes and style experts recommendations.)

Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design


Location: Charing Cross Road, Archway, Back Hill, and Southampton Row which is where the universitys Cochrane Theatre is also located. Number of students: Over 4000 Courses: Fashion, fine art, jewellery design, graphics, performing arts and theatre design. Notable alumni: Fashion designers Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, John Galliano and Matthew Williamson all studied at the college, as well as actors Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth. Brief history: Founded in 1854 to provide industrial education. CSM received a government grant which secured further growth and, after WWII, it was established as one of the major Fine Art schools. Saint Martins School of Art and The Central School of Arts & Crafts joined to become Central Saint Martins in 1989, with the Drama Centre joining in 1999 and Byam Shaw College of Art in 2003. What the students say: It has a great reputation and i like the location because its in the middle of everything. And the building has character with a lot of history. Events/exhibitions: If youre stuck for things to do even in the middle of the night then have a peep at CSMs Window gallery on Charing Cross Road, which is open 24 hours a day. Currently showing is the W indow Gallery Seduced show, in partnership with the Barbicans Seduced: Art and Sex from Antiquity to Now, and runs until January 31, 2008. The Cochrane Theatre also has shows throughout the year, some of which are Pay What You Can performances with no set ticket prices. Did you know? The Sex Pistols played their first ever gig at CSM in November 1975. It is said to have lasted less than 20 minutes as they were thrown out and told never to return again. The event is now commemorated with a blue plaque at the college.

Location: Wimbledon, Southwest London Number of students: 1,100 Courses: Sculpture, costume design, animation, painting, acting and directing theatre, painting, digital arts and technical effects courses. Notable alumni: Tony Cragg (sculptor, Turner Prize winner 1988); James Acheson (costume designer); Raymond Briggs (author/illustrator); Richard Hudson (set designer, Olivier Award winner); Mark Tildesley (production designer) Brief history: Founded in 1890 as an art class in the Rutlish School for Boys. By 1904 it occupied four rooms in the Technical Institute, Gladstone Road. The first theatre design class was introduced in 1932 and, in 1963, the first Studio Theatre was built. It became part of Arts London in 2006 as Wimbledon College of Art. The colleges School of Theatre is the largest in the UK and showcases its own productions What the students say: I chose to come here to get known and possibly set up a gallery. The environment is friendly, with nice people and because its a small place, you get to meet everybody. Nathan Davidson, 19, BA Painting. Events/exhibitions: The Jerwood Drawing Prize is an annual competition based at the college, open to all UK artists, exhibiting contemporary drawings and seeking to promote and reward talent. The Simon Gallery and the refurbished theatre are to reopen next year. Did you know? Ex-student James Acheson won Oscars for costume design in The Last Empero (1987), r Dangerous Liaisons (1989) and Restoration (1995). More recently he designed the costumes for the Spiderm a n films 40 suits were needed in the third film, at a cost of $22,000 each.

London College of Communication


Location: Elephant and Castle Number of students: 10,000 Courses: Journalism, printing, design, animation, marketing, photography, film. Notable alumni: Rebekah Wade (editor, The Sun); Jefferson Hack (magazine publisher); Helen Boaden (BBC director of news); Kwame Kwei-Armah (actor); John Rankin (photographer); Kate Thornton (TV presenter); Oliver Curtis (cinematographer) Brief history: The first stone was laid by the Prince of Wales in November 1893 and Saint Bride Foundation Institute opened the following year for evening classes with only 124 pupils. Since then, it has changed name six times and merged with three other colleges. LCC is the largest of all the University of the Arts colleges and consists of four specialist schools: The School of Creative Enterprise; School of Printing and Publishing; School of Media; and School of Graphic Design. What the students say: I decided to apply to UAL as I wanted to be associated with arts. I saw the course on the internet and chose LCC over LCF I like the international crowd and diversity here. Pamina Albrecht, 20, BA Public Relations Events/exhibitions: The college has significant gallery space including The Street Gallery, Community Gallery and the Well Gallery at the entrance to the Design School. Throughout the year LCC hosts a large number of events and exhibitions, including end of year shows. LCC also produces Arts London News, the university newspaper created by Journalism and Photo Journalism students in the School of Media. Did you know? LCC was chosen over rival universities to house the Stanley Kubrick Archives, this is because Kubrick wanted the archive to stay in London and the family had connections with LCC.

Camberwell College of Arts Chelsea College of Art and Design


Location: Millbank/Pimlico Number of students: 2,500 Courses: Fine arts, and also graphics, textiles and interior design. Notable alumni: Ralph Fiennes (actor); Quentin Blake (illustrator); Anish Kapoor (sculptor); Steve McQueen (artist); Alan Rickman (actor). Brief history: The college was founded in 1895 as the South Western Polytechnic, which gave Londoners a technical and scientific education. Art also made up a large part of the curriculum. It changed its name on numerous occasions and, in 1975, merged with Hammersmith School of Art. In 1986, it became Chelsea College of Art and Design and the two separate schools of Art and Design were united in 2005 at one site at Millbank, opposite the Tate Britain in Pimlico. What the students say: It has a great location and reputation, with fantastic teachers, vivid courses and a constantly changing environment. Lauren Godfrey, 18, an arts and design student. Events/exhibitions: This year alumni Mark Wallinger and Mike Nelson have received nominations for the Turner Prize. Wallingers installation State Britain is on show at the Tate Britain Gallery. Chelsea Space is the university gallery which is open to the public and encourages artists and designers to work on projects that involve curatorial experimentation - the exposure of process and ideas. Did you know? Millbank, was the site of the worlds first modern prison in the 19th century. More recently, it housed the Royal Medical College, and was where the vaccine for typhoid was first developed. Location: Peckham Road. Close to the local farmers market for organic produce, and a bus ride from the Elephant and Castle. Number of students: Around 2,800 Courses: Ceramics, 3D design, conservation, illustration and history of art. Notable alumni: Mike Leigh (film maker); Richard Long (Turner prize winner 1989); Jeff Banks (designer); Sir Howard Hodgkin (artist) Brief history: Founded in 1898 as Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, it is now regarded as one of the countrys leading arts and design colleges. In its early years it offered a wide range of courses to workers in the building and printing trades. It was renamed Camberwell College of Arts in 1989 and courses were organised into two separate schools. What the students say: I like Camberwell because its got a homely feel to the area and is quiet. The course structure is open. Sahed Ali, 20, a BA Photography student. Events/exhibitions: The Detanico & Lain exhibition features the work of the Brazilian art and graphic design duo, and is in the Foyer Space of Camberwell College between November 5 December 7, 2007. Open Monday Friday, 9am until 6pm. Did you know? Ex-student Mike Leighs Vera Drake was filmed with no script and went on to be nominated for Best Original Screenplay in the 2005 Oscars. Leigh said I had to prepare the screenplay so it could be sent out to academy members. But actually the screenplay that was nominated doesnt exist. The film is the screenplay.
