Design Steps for ASD method

Sir Dr. Zubair Memon

Design Steps for ASD Method

1. Calculate and transfer the total live loads applied on the section. 2. To calculate the maximum bending moment and shear force values CHECK FOR BENDING STRESS 3. Calculate the approximate section modulus by Using Flexural Formula,

=
Fb = 0.66 Fy OR Fb = 0.6 Fy

S =

=S

4. Select suitable section from steel table and their other parameters. 5. Calculate section modulus due to self weight of the section and total section modulus due to the applied loading and dead load.

S ( Self Weight ) = S ( Total or Actual ) = S (applied) + S ( Self Weight)

Section is Safe

if the this condition is satisfied .

S(

Allowable ) >

S ( Actual )

CHECK FOR SHEAR STRESS 6. Considering the web-area of the section we will find out shear stress ( allowable ) Allowable Shear Stress = 0.40 * Fy 0.40 * 36000 14400 psi

7. Shear Stress (actual ) = Maximum Shear Force / Shear Area Maximum Shear Force = Shear Force ( Live Load ) + Shear Force ( Dead Load ) Shear Area = ( Depth 2 ( thickness of flange ) * (thickness of web)

IF Shear Stress ( allowable ) > Shear Stress ( Actual )

THEN SECTION IS SAFE IN SHEAR

Design Steps for ASD method CHECK FOR DEFLECTION 8. DEFLECTION: (actual) = 5 W (L ) 3 / 48 E I ( allowable) = L / 360 inch

Sir Dr. Zubair Memon

( allowable) > (actual)

Then Section is Safe in Deflection.
