SIX TIPS ON A TAX CREDIT FOR RETIREMENT SAVINGS
If you make eligible contributions to an employer-sponsored retirement plan or to an individual
retirement arrangement, you may be eligible for a tax credit, depending on your age and income.
Here are six things the IRS wants you to know about the Savers Credit:
1. Income limits The Savers Credit, formally known as the Retirement Savings Contributions Credit, applies to
individuals with a ling status and 2011 income of:
Single, married ling separately, or qualifying widow(er), with income up to $28,250
Head of Household with income up to $42,375
Married Filing Jointly, with incomes up to $56,500
2. Eligibility requirements To be eligible for the credit you must be at least 18 years of age, you cannot have been
a full-time student during the calendar year and cannot be claimed as a dependent on another persons return.
3. Credit amount If you make eligible contributions to a qualied IRA, 401(k) and certain other retirement plans,
you may be able to take a credit of up to $1,000 ($2,000 if ling jointly). The credit is a percentage of the qualify-
ing contribution amount, with the highest rate for taxpayers with the least income.
4. Distributions When guring this credit, you generally must subtract distributions you received from your retire-
ment plans from the contributions you made. This rule applies to distributions received in the two years before
the year the credit is claimed, the year the credit is claimed, and the period after the end of the credit year but
before the due date - including extensions - for ling the return for the credit year.
5. Other tax benets The Retirement Savings Contributions Credit is in addition to other tax benets you may
receive for retirement contributions. For example, most workers at these income levels may deduct all or part
of their contributions to a traditional IRA. Contributions to a regular 401(k) plan are not subject to income tax
until withdrawn from the plan.
6. Forms to use To claim the credit use Form 8880, Credit for Qualied Retirement Savings Contributions.
For more information, review IRS Publication 590, Individual Retirement Arrangements (IRAs), Publication
4703, Retirement Savings Contributions Credit, and Form 8880. Publications and forms can be downloaded at
www.irs.gov or ordered by calling 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).

STUDENT SUCCESS FUND SUPPORTERS LOOK
FOR MORE AID FROM COMMUNITY
BIG RAPIDS In continuation of its community-action
approach to school funding, the Big Rapids Student
Success Fund hosted an informational school nance
meeting Thursday.
A group of parents started the fund two years ago, with
the vision of awarding grants to Big Rapids Public Schools
teachers, administrators and students for technology,
curriculum, classroom supplies or capital projects.
Since its inception, the Student Success Fund has raised
$22,600 and awarded $10,000 in grants, divided into two
annual grant cycles of $5,000. More than $25,000 worth of
requests have come in during that time.
For the past few years, there have been a lot of parents
who attended the board meetings and heard this information
(about school nance), said Mary Lewis, president of the
Big Rapids Middle School PTO. We thought, What can we
do? We wanted to make a difference, so we started the Big
Rapids Success Fund.
Last year, funds were awarded to general grant requests.
This year, the group has focused on the Year for Reading in
addition to general requests. In June, Lewis held a reading
summit where representatives from each school presented
a list of literary-related needs for their building.
Supporters of the success fund have since targeted
community groups and other organizations to see if
they would like to sponsor a class or ll a specic need.
The meeting on Thursday was intended to recruit more
supporters who would help with fundraising efforts.
Were looking for community partners to take on these
needs, whether they can fund them right now (or host
fundraisers), said Nick Glauch, a supporter of the fund.
The group plans to host a two-year anniversary fundraiser
in May, weekly lunches with smaller groups of interested
parties and reach out to more community organizations.
While focusing on reading this year, the group still plans to
do another general grant cycle this spring, but they would
like to see more involvement to secure the future of the
fund.
(We have) enough money to do another grant cycle, but
really what we need is people to participate and help us do
more, said Robyn Stratton, a fund supporter.
In addition to the discussion on the Big Rapids Student
Success Fund, BRPS Finance Director Nick Scheible also
presented an overview of the districts nances since 2000.
For the 2010-11 school year, BRPS had an operating
budget of $15.6 million, 82 percent of which goes to
personnel costs.
During the past 10 years, BRPS has reduced its number of
teachers by 35 percent, reduced its number of administrators
by 50 percent, lost 30 percent of its paraprofessionals and
decreased the number of other support staff by 42 percent
largely as a result of decreased funding from the state and
federal government, combined with increased expenses on
retirement, health insurance, utilities and general cost of
living.
In the same time frame, the number of students attending
BRPS also declined by 13 percent, which accounts for some
of the decreases in personnel, Scheible said.
You can tie some of that to the number of students we
have, but that has been predicated by the decline of state
funds as we make these cuts, he said.
BRPS has not laid off any of its staff, but it recently offered
a retirement package and has not rehired for any vacant
positions.
Phil Keating, a supporter of the Big Rapids Student
Success Fund, pointed out how these reductions impact
classrooms with larger class sizes, fewer classes
offered and older textbooks, classroom supplies and other
equipment.
Todd Stanislav, one of the people who helped award
grants in past cycles, said many of the requests reected
new needs caused by the budget cuts.
The thing that struck me between the eyes in the last
grant cycle was that the majority of teachers who were
asking for funding were asking because of increased class
sizes and trying to make the learning more accessible (to
more students), he said. If we can provide that funding, it
certainly takes some of the pressure off the district to nd
that money, and in some cases the money just isnt there.

how to get involved, visit www.brssf.org
DE-JUNK BEFORE SPRING CLEANING
(NewsUSA) - Spring is rounding the bend -- meaning
were shedding the winter blues and leaping at the chance
to glimpse real sunlight. Its also when the age-old practice
of spring cleaning comes aknocking.
Some say spring cleaning originated with the Chinese,
who roll up their sleeves and sweep their oors to clean out
the bad luck and misfortune of the previous year.
Others say its just biology. Winters lack of sunlight causes
us to produce hormones that induce sleep, and spring
cleaning is our way of waking up from a melatonin lethargy.
Regardless, we feel compelled to kick out the dirt and
grime and open our windows. To help give you a head
start, we consulted the removal specialists at 1-800-GOT-
JUNK? The experts say you must rst get the junk out in
an environmentally friendly way so the real cleaning can
begin.
Were heading into our busy season now, and every
spring our customers tell us the same thing: Im trying to
spring clean, but I have so much stuff! explains 1-800-GOT-
JUNK? public relations director Tania Venn. Over the years,
weve accumulated the best tips to help people get prepared
for spring cleaning.
READ ON FOR DE-JUNKING 101:
1. Set goals. Your clear vision will help keep you
motivated.
2. Plan ahead. Where will you take recycleable items?
Donatable items?
3. Take advantage of family and friends. Hold a house
spring cleaning, and offer to return the favor! Perhaps nd a
new home for some of your things?
4. Focus on one room at a time. The success of
nishing one room will drive you on to the next.
5. Remove unwanted items. Create a staging area, or
remove them to preserve clarity.
6. Be ruthless. Anything that you dont use regularly
or has no sentimental value should get taken away.
7. Organize the room. Use existing organizing units,
or purchase new ones.
8. Clean. Its beyond satisfying.
9. Reward yourself. If youre following the list, you
deserve it.
10. Professionalize. Consider using a professional
service to remove junk, organize or clean if you feel
overwhelmed.

HOW SMALL BUSINESSES CAN MAKE A BIG
SPLASH WITHOUT GETTING WET
(NewsUSA) - Its usually better to be a big sh in a small
pond than a small sh in a big pond, or so the saying goes.
Many of todays small and medium-sized companies are
trying to gure out how to make a big splash when launching
or renovating their presence on the web.
How crowded is the web? Well, according to Royal
Pingdom, a global Internet tracking and statistics company,
there are over 234 million unique websites. Many of these
sites are expensive to create and costly to maintain while
only being mediocre and containing no consistent theme or
message.
According to web design experts, there are several
critical components of leveraging a website as a successful
business tool. These tips will help ensure that your website
attracts the right visitors, encourages them to browse and
entices customers to buy:
1. Aesthetic Design. Your website represents you -- its
your ambassador on the World Wide Web. Therefore, it
needs to be clean and professional and generate the right
vibe and reaction to your visitors.
2. Message and Branding. The purpose of a website is to
broadcast your companys brand and messages to a wide
audience of consumers, businesses, employees and other
stakeholders.
3. Search Engine Optimization (SEO). SEO is the process
that seeks to ensure that your website ranks high in search
engines for its relevant key phrases. This process improves
the volume and the quality of hits (trafc) to your website
from the search engines. The higher a website ranks in
the results of a search, the greater the chance that it will
be visited by users, which helps companies to build brand
awareness and grow revenue.
4. Interactive Capabilities and E-commerce. Whether
you want people to purchase goods and services directly
through the website via e-commerce, or have someone
from your company contact them, make sure the website
is intuitive. Encouraging visitors to participate in some form
helps develop a stronger bond with your company.
Finding the right rm that can combine web design with
branding, marketing, business consulting and a tight budget
can be a tall order. One such rm that has generated
tremendous success with this combination is Northeast Web
Design (www.northeastwebdesign.com). It has developed a
client-friendly process and platform that treats every minnow-
sized customer as if it were a whale. We provide a full suite
of services, ranging from aesthetic design and branding to
website construction and E-commerce integration to Search
Engine Optimization, stated the companys Project Manager
David Landon. Regardless of whether the company is small
or large, Northeast Web Design works closely to achieve
that companys goals.
Its nice to know that in todays challenging economic
environment, with the help of web designers such as
Northeast Web Design, companies can become big sh in a
big pond without spending a lot.
ENCOURAGE READING WITH TIPS FROM DR. SEUSS
(NewsUSA) - The rst nine years of a childs life are
the most critical for learning how to read. In fact, national
research estimates that 74 percent of poor readers who
arent helped before age nine will continue having difculties

in high school, and only two percent will
go on to complete a four-year degree.
Besides being the foundation of
communication and most kinds of classroom-
based learning, reading skills give children
a condence and advantage that benets
them long after they nish school. And for
those who actually enjoy reading? The
rewards are endless, says Richard Bavaria,
Ph.D. (Dr. Rick) from tutoring service and
education expert, Sylvan Learning.
To encourage parents to renew their
efforts to get children and young adults
interested in reading, the experts at Sylvan
are taking a few pages out of Dr. Seusss
many dog-eared books. Check out these
Seuss-inspired reading tips for the could-be
avid readers in your family.
Oh say, can you say? Reading aloud
with your children is just as vital as you
always heard. For toddlers and young kids,
reading aloud with exaggerated voices and
silly noises helps keep them interested and
excited. For older children and young adults,
getting them to read aloud builds condence
in their reading abilities.
One book, two books, red books, blue
books. Most people love collecting valued
items, children included. Support efforts to
create their own library, and help them nd
new books to add to the collection. Turn
trips to the grocery store or Goodwill into a
treasure hunt for new books.
And to think that you saw that word on
Mulberry Street. Car rides are ideal times
to learn new words because you and your
kids are being bombarded with new phrases
and vocabulary around every curve. From
billboards to street signs, new words are
everywhere!
Oh, the places youll go! Let the Internet
guide you. If your nine-year-old refuses
to read anything other than horse books,
what better place to nd a reading list of
age-appropriate horse books? Interactive
websites like Book Adventure -- www.
bookadventure.com -- allow kids to choose
their own books and take short quizzes for
prizes.
My book... By me myself. Challenge your
kids by asking them to write their own stories
with their own illustrations. It increases
their familiarity with words and encourages
creativity.

the vast world of reading, including more
Seuss tips, at www.sylvanlearning.com.
HOW TO OVERCOME ADVERSITY IN
YOUR DAILY LIFE
(NewsUSA) - While professional athletes
face their opponents on game day, everyone
faces adversity in their everyday lives.
Just ask noted sports psychologist and
author Dr. Jack Llewellyn, who in January
2004 received news that would change
his outlook forever: He was diagnosed
with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis
(RRMS), the most common form of MS.
Dr. Llewellyn built his career on helping
professional athletes overcome adversity
by leveraging lifes obstacles to achieve
success -- if youve been following sports
headlines lately, you know how much energy
that can take -- and suddenly he found
himself applying those same techniques
to get himself through his own challenge of
living with MS.
There are no guarantees in life, but a
positive attitude keeps the probability of
success on your side, says the author of
the newly released book Get the Mud out
of the Water. The week I was diagnosed
was a tough one. However, I worked with my
doctor to get on therapy right away, and Ive
been able to maintain the life that I love in
the eight years since.
I tell my players all the time, Everyone
faces adversity in their lives. What you can
control is the time it takes to overcome it by
learning how to focus on your assets -- not
your liabilities.
The book by Dr. Llewellyn outlines
strategies designed to help anyone recover
from adversity and lead their best life each
day. Among his tips:
* Assess your assets and your liabilities.
Ask yourself: What makes you strong
enough to overcome lifes challenges?
* Achieve something positive every day.
Take stock of your accomplishments -- small
and large -- and ll your mind with things
that are positive and afrming.
* Surround yourself with a team of people
committed to helping you. You need a
support system thats both committed to
your health and you.
* Use stress as an incentive. Find a way to
use the energy from things that put a strain
on you in a productive way.
* Create a positive environment. Make a
conscious choice to live every day with a
condent mindset.

Llewellyn, visit www.sharedsolutions.com.
