Prior to performing the dissection, the students were asked to fill out
assignment sheets on how the muscle and skeletal systems work.

Kennedy Elementary
School students use unique
learning methods to study
muscle and skeletal systems
By KEN GRABOWSKI
AssociAte editor
MANISTEE No one
could have blamed Kennedy
Elementary School teacher
Michelle LaPrad if she quipped
to her students to just wing it
on their science assignment.
LaPrad had her fifth grade
students studying the muscle
and skeletal system through the
traditional methods, but she
wanted to give something visual
to really drive home the point
on how they work in the human
body. That was when she just
decided to wing it.
What we are doing is dis-
secting the chicken wing to
enhance what we will be study-
ing about the muscle system
and the skeletal system, said
LaPrad. Anatomically, they
are very similar to our arm
so the kids will be able to see
the biceps and triceps that are
shared both in the chicken
wings and in our bodies.
Students had the opportu-
nity to actually hold the wing
and move it after the dissection,
so they could see those things
taking place right before their
eyes.
They have the chance to see
the tendons and find the liga-
ment that holds the two bones
together in the upper and lower
arm and likewise in the upper
and lower wing, said LaPrad.
Right now a lot of our science
focus has been on the body sys-
tem and this is fitting in well. It
is a nice way for them to actual-
ly see them instead of just trying
to feel them in their bodies and
to actually see how they work,
such as what a muscle looks like
when it contracts and elongates
back again.
Prior to doing the dissec-
tion, the students studied the
different parts of those systems.
They also made finger models

International Coin Collectors are in Town
to Purchase All Types of Coins
By KEN MCINTOSH
STAFF WRITER
ICCA will be placing ads in newspapers,
radio and running television spots this week
asking people to bring in any old silver and
gold coins made before 1970. Those that do
bring in their coins will be able to speak with
collectors one on one and have their coins
looked at by a specialist. With the help of
these ICCA members, offers will be made to
those that have coins made before 1970.
Offers will be made based on silver or gold
content and the rarity of the coins. All coins
made before 1970 will be examined and
purchased including gold coins, silver coins,
silver dollars, all types of nickels and pennies.
Those that decide to sell their coins will be
paid on the spot.
If you are like a lot of people, you might
have a few old coins or even a coffee can full
lying around. If you have ever wondered what
they are worth, now might be your chance
to fnd out and even sell them if you choose.
They could be worth a lot according to the
International Coin Collectors Association,
also known as ICCA. Collectors will pay a
fortune for some coins and currency for their
collections. If they are rare enough, one coin
could be worth over $100,000 according to
Eric Helms coin collector and ICCA member.
One ultra rare dime, an 1894S Barber, sold
for a record $1.9 million to a collector in July
of 2007. While that is an extreme example,
many rare and valuable coins are stashed
away in dresser drawers or lock boxes around
the country. The ICCA and its collector members
have organized a traveling event in search of
all types of coins and currency. Even common
coins can be worth a signifcant amount due
to the high price of silver and gold, says
Helms. Washington quarters and Roosevelt
dimes and worth many times their face value.
Recent silver markets have driven the price up
on even common coins made of silver. Helms
explains, All half dollars, quarter and dimes
made before 1970 contain 90% silver and are
sought after any time silver prices rise. Right
now its a sellers market.
The rarest coins these collectors are looking
for include $20, $10, $5 and $2 1/2 gold
coins and any coin made before 1850. These
coins always bring big premiums according to
the ICCA. Silver dollars are also very sought
after nowadays.
Other types of items the ICCA will be
purchasing during this event include U.S.
currency, gold bullion, investment gold, silver
bars, silver rounds, proof sets, etc. Even
foreign coins are sought after and will be
purchased.
Also, at this event anyone can sell their
gold jewelry, dental gold or anything made
of gold on the spot. Bring anything you think
might be gold and the collectors will examine,
test and price it for free. If you decide to sell
you will be paid on the spot it has been an
unknown fact that coin dealers have always
paid more for jewelry and scrap gold than
other jewelers and pawn brokers.
So, whether you have one coin you think
might be valuable or a large collection you
recently inherited, you can talk to these
collectors for free and if your lucky you may
have a rarity worth thousands. Either way,
there is nothing to lose and it sounds like fun!
For more information on this event
visit the ICCA website at www.
internationalcoincollectors.com.

MISS A DAY, MISS A LOT.
Subscribe to the News Advocate! Introducing children to
wildlife can be a great way
to get them interested in sci-
ence, discovery and nature.
While many kids may be
intimidated by the periodic
table and microscopes, most
are inherently fond of all ani-
mals, from baby penguins to
exotic cheetahs. Fortunately,
there are fun and affordable
ways to get kids engaged with
nature and wildlife, learning
valuable lessons along the
way.
How to Make Wildlife
Interesting
Do Some Research: Take
children on a virtual safari
using reliable sources found
on the Internet. A wide range
of information and pictures
on just about every known
reptile, amphibian, mammal
and more can be found with
the click of a mouse. Once
children have narrowed down
the basic facts about their
favorite animals, take a trip
to the library and give them
a challenge find one fact
about an unknown animal.
This not only exposes chil-
dren to exciting new infor-
mation, it also gives them a
chance to learn about valu-
able research tools.
Have a Wild
Experience: Once children
have learned more about the
animal kingdom, its time to
reward them with real one-
on-one animal time. Zoos and
wildlife preserves offer the
perfect opportunity to get up
close and personal with crea-
tureslarge or smallthat
kids have seen through pic-
tures. While there, kids can
meet animal specialists who
are usually on hand to provide
children with the information
and fun stories that come
from working with animals on
a day-to-day basis.
Bring the Lessons to the
Living Room: A family movie
can be a great way to wrap
up an exploration of the
animal kingdom. The toe-
tapping family blockbuster
Happy Feet Two, available
now from Warner Bros. on
Blu-ray disc and DVD, is an
excellent resource that animal
lovers of all ages can enjoy.
In the sequel to the Academy
Awardwinning Happy
Feet, Mumbles son Erik
lacks the dancing talent of all
the other penguins. Erik runs
away to avoid dancing, only
to have his world shaken by
powerful forces. Erik and his
Penguins Mumble and Erik can help parents get kids
interested in learning about nature.
Introducing kids to the animal kingdom
father must bring together
the penguin nations and all
manners of fabulous creatures
from tiny krill to giant
elephant seals to make
things right.

to show how the ligaments,
flanges and metacarpals on
their hands work.
They cant just get it
from reading a piece of
paper, said LaPrad. We
read several different pieces
of information and looked at
things online. This is another
way to get all the learning
types in and not just your
auditory learners and book
learners.
Since the students are
only in the fifth grade, they
havent had much of an
opportunity to do dissections.
LaPrad made sure to have
plenty of parent volunteers in
the classroom to assist as the
students used scissors and
skewers to handle the task.
This is the first time we
are doing this particular type
of dissection, and for a lot of
these kids the first time they
have dissected anything,
said LaPrad. That is why I
wanted to do something that
wouldnt intimidate them.
They have probably all eaten
chicken wings and have
experienced cooking them
with their parents, so it was
a good way to get them into
doing it.
However, the more
important thing is the stu-
dents winged away with a
better understanding of the
muscle and skeletal system.
It was hands-on learning in
its best form.
LESSON: From Page 1
Kennedy Elementary teacher Michelle LaPrad dem-
onstrates to the students how the muscle system
works.
