INDICATION
ADVERSE REACTION
NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES C: Anticholinergic, Antiparkinsonian drug H: decreased or diminished EPS and Parkinson symptoms E: best taken after meals (after breakfast and lunch) to avoid gastric irritation C: do not use with antidiarrheals 1-2 hours after taking drug : avoid activities that may require mental alertness : change position slowly to avoid sudden drop in BP K: Monitor clients output; increase intake of fluids, fruit juices and fiber to avoid 47 constipation

NAME OF DRUG
MECHANISM OF ACTION Competes with histamine for H1 receptor site. Prevents, but doesnt reverse, histamine mediated responses particularly those of bronchial tubes, GI tract, uterus and blood vessels.

CONTRAINDICATIO N

CNSdrowsiness, confusion, insomnia, headache, vertigo, sedation, sleepiness, nervousness, restlessness CVpalpitations, hypotension, tachycardia EENT blurred vision, nasal congestion, tinnitus GIT nausea and vomiting, dry mouth, constipation, anorexia GUT dysurea, urine retention, urinary frequency Hema hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis Respi thickening of bronchial secretions Skin Urticaria, photosensitivity, rash, Other anaphylactic shock
NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES
C: Anticholinergic, Antiparkinsonian H: (-) allergy, decreased or diminished EPS symptoms, (+) sedation E: Best taken with food if GI upset occurs C: Avoid alcohol : Report difficulty of breathing K : Administer syrup form if patient is unable to take tablets : Assess for allergy : Warn patient not to take this drug with any other products that contain diphenhydramine (including topical therapy) because of increased adverse reactions.
Used to anxiety, tension, sleeplessness or involuntary movements due to the side effects of certain psychiatric drugs.
Contraindicated in patients with treat hypersensitivity to drug. Avoid use in patients taking MAO inhibitors Caution in patients with asthma, COPD.
