PART A: READING (15 MARKS) QUESTION 1 Read the text below and answer all the questions. I The Health Ministry of Malaysia conducted a survey recently as it was concerned over the increasing number of Malaysians who were affected by serious fatal diseases. It looked into the factors affecting the overall health of most Malaysians. As expected, bad eating habits emerged as the number one problem with 8.7 million Malaysians. The findings of the survey 5

indicated 72.8% of the population did not eat a balanced diet. Dr Tee E Siong, President of the Nutrition Society of Malaysia said that Malaysians have bad eating habits and these habits have serious consequences on their health. This matter has been highlighted various times in the past five years. "There is an extremely high percentage of chronic diseases related to diet 10

among Malaysians. The diseases include obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes while heart disease remains the most important cause of death in the country." He said the existence of such diseases among Malaysians

give an indication of how serious they are in paying attention to health problems. 15

II

Many Malaysians, especially urbanites living in the Klang Valley, know that a balanced diet decreases the risk of diet-related chronic disease but many don't put this into practice. The problem is they are not serious about

changing their dietary patterns and making healthier food selection choices. He added that there are also Malaysians with little knowledge of nutrition. They usually are people from the lower income group who do not have much exposure to nutrition information and just eat to satisfy hunger. They usually look for cheap sources of food, which may lack the proper nutrients that the body requires. 20

III

Unhealthy eating patterns include consuming oily foods or foods which are rich in animal fats. A diet that is too sweet and too salty or contains too much

meat and too few vegetables is also not recommended by experts but is highly preferred among Malaysians.

IV When preparing meals, Dr Tee advises that steaming is recommended rather than deep-frying. It is also important to remove any visible fat from the meat and use less seasoning and sauces in the food. This is because they 30

contain a lot of salt, additives and flavour enhancers, which are not good for the body. It is advisable to use natural ingredients like herbs to improve the flavour of food in comparison to seasoning.

The Ministry hopes that the results of the survey will serve as a reminder to Malaysians about the need to be more careful about what they eat. It hopes that similar surveys in the future will show improvements in their eating habits.
