After more than a foot of snow accumulating on Hwy 5 through Sunday night & early hours of Monday, several accidents jackknifed semis &vehicles in the ditch shut down the Coq between Merritt & Hope Monday, until late in the afternoon. Highways maintenance crews were also busy with avalanche mitigation. Environment Canada says that this should be pretty well it for big dumps of snow for this season. Wilfred Dunnigan passed away peacefully Feb. 14, 2012 at the age of 96. He was born to James and Elizabeth (Ryan) Dunnigan in Merritt in 1915. After going to the United States in 1922, his family settled in Whatcom County in 1930. Wilfred enlisted in the US Army in 1936 and was discharged in 1945 with the rank of First Sergeant. Wilfred worked as a brick mason in Whatcom County and was a key figure in the local Bricklayers Union until his retirement in 1980. Wilfred especially enjoyed fishing for salmon and steelhead. One of his favourite placed to go was the Olympic Peninsula steel heading in winter. Gardening and growing tomatoes was also a hobby. But his real passion was Notre Dame football, which took him all the way to Ireland to see his favourite team play. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Ruie Marie (Clarke), sons Michael (Janice) of Mt. Vernon, Patrick (Sheri) of Bellingham, Daniel (Debbie) of Lynden, and daughters Mary (Ted) McClung of La Pine, Ore., Carol (Rich) Siden of Bellingham, and Laurie (Michael) Morris of Sedro Wooley, 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren & 1 great-great grandchild. He is also mourned by his extended family, including Richard Dunnigan in Merritt. A mass was held February 23, 2012 in Bellingham.
