2. *All* Russian Schools to Use Free Software
After running some successful pilots, the Russian government has decided to make open source the
standard for *all* schools. Depending on the uptake, that could be up to one million more machines
running free software by 2010.

3. Nokia goes after Google with opensource Symbian
Nokia has announced its Symbian mobile operating
system will join the likes of Android and will become an
open source operating system. The announcement was
made Tuesday at the Smartphone Show in London and is
seen as a bid to maintain and possibly grow its developer
base. This move comes at the same time Google makes its
Android source code available to developers.

4. Ubuntu community manager releases CClicensed metal album
Severed Fifth's debut album is finally released. Eight tracks of
pounding metal, grinding guitars and machinegun double bass
drumming, sealed with a ripping vocal performance. The album was
written, performed, recorded and produced entirely by Jono Bacon,
Ubuntu community manager. Denied By Reign was mastered by Paul
Wilkinson.
This album is free. It is released under a Creative Commons Attribution
ShareAlike license which means that you can share, copy, remix, mash
upa nd sell Denied By Reign, just make sure you give credit to Severed
Fifth.

5. Yahoo! Opens Up to Developers
Today Yahoo! officially introduced their "open strategy" platform, Y!OS. The Yahoo! Open Strategy
platform consists of three development components, the Yahoo! Application Platform, the Yahoo!
Social Platform, and the Yahoo! Query Language.
Yahoo! is encouraging developers to start working with these tools, and promises to soon provide
information on supplying newly created applications within Yahoo!'s pages.

6. BMW to bring Linux powered car?
BMW is developing an opensource platform for vehicle
electronics. By taking the opensource approach, rather than
using proprietary software, BMW aims to allow providers of
infotainment services to develop plugandplay applications.
BMW is asking other automakers to join in its effort.
Electrical and electronics engineers from BMW, Chrysler, Ford
Motor, General Motors and Honda R&D participated on the
panel.

7. Alliance vows to promote wider use of open source tech in Asia
The alliance of Asian governments can further promote the use of open source software in the region.
Nine membercountries of the Asia Open Source Software Center (AOSSC) last Tuesday signed a
memorandum of cooperation that indicates their mutual understanding to promote open source
software (OSS) in the region.
Those who signed were information technology officials or representatives of OSS centers from
China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
Representatives from Indonesia, Pakistan and Vietnam were not present during the signing, however.

7. Erode to host Intrepid Release event
“Erode IT Association”, Erode, TamilNadu, will be hosting the Intrepid Ibex release event of Ubuntu
Tamil Team on 09 Nov 08, Sunday.
This will be a day long event where Intrepid Ibex will be released and the participants will be
introduced to the basics of Ubuntu.
