One of my teachers, Mr. Sturgeon just came back from Mumbai and told how wonderful it
was. When he was touring Mumbai he was shocked to see that the streets and buildings
were as big as beluga whales. This was one thing he did not expect considering Indias
immense population. Later he went to dobi dagha where people send their clothes to be
washed. He said it was like nothing he had ever seen before and that the air tunnels were
as mind-boggling as a talking dolphin. Later he went to a restaurant called Maharaja and
said that the locals were looking at them amused and he thought it was as hilarious as a
bunny-boy (probably because he was eating with a fork or knife, in India you use your
hands). It was one of the best places he had ever been and he said he would definitely
go there again.

A bit about Mumbai
Attractions here, Attractions there come
and see theyre everywhere. From the
gorgeous gardens to the beautiful sea
Mumbai is like a thrill ride for everyone.
There are many people in Mumbai who love
it there because of all the attractions.
Actually as of the latest census Mumbai has
over 18million inhabitants. They have come
from far and wide and add to the beauty
and variety of Mumbai. Although all of
Mumbai is beautiful one of the most
amazing sites is the Taj Mahal palace and
tower, however the peninsula is completely
stunning and is like a mesmerizing snake to
anyone who looks at it. Mumbai went from
a small city to a big time paradise. You
know what they say If you put enough
pressure on coal it turns to pearls and that
is exactly what has happened to Mumbai.
So come on in and enjoy the sites, you
havent lived till youve been to Mumbai.
Population and
Resources
The city of Mumbai was established in
1498. It is located on the west coast of
India and is the capital city of Maharashtra.
In the past, there were a few reasons people
came to Mumbai. The main reason people
moved to Mumbai is because they were
probably looking for a clean source of
water and fish as an endangered animal
might look for protection and sanctuary.
Another reason people might have come to
Mumbai would be if they were slaves or if
thieves had looted their village. If this was
the case then they would have no choice but
to move to Mumbai, since it would be the
wisest option for poor people and slave
traders (After all it was the best place to
trade slaves and of course the slaves have to
follow their orders).
" At this point in time
Mumbais population is approximately
18,000,000. The major populations
represented by Mumbai are Indian and
American. The reason people come to
Mumbai now is much different than before.
In modern times the main reasons people
come to Mumbai is the clean source of
water and variety of jobs which include
engineering, fishing, agriculture, technology
and much more. Actually, come to think of it
the amount of jobs Mumbai has to offer is as
about the same as the number of feathers on
a parrot. Another reason people live in
Mumbai is the cities tourist attractions.
Mumbai is now a city thriving with business
and is one of the most important cities in the
world. You know what they say If you put
enough pressure on coal it turns to
diamonds. And that is exactly what has
happened to Mumbai.

How People
Have Changed the
Landscape of
Mumbai
" These pictures show how
people have changed the landscape of
Mumbai. In the 1400s, Mumbai was a
small island city that earned all its money
and food because all of the inhabitants
fished. Everything that occurred there was
as simple as 1,2,3. Then around the year
1498 everything changed. People started
building bigger roads, buildings and deep-
sea ports.
They built the roads and buildings with
relative ease, however the ports were a
different matter. They dug out sand and
gravel from the beaches determined to build
the ports. They were like mothers
determined to raise their child. Mumbai was
no longer as simple as 1,2,3. It was now a
place where people could start over, a place
to raise children. It was like heaven was
masquerading as a normal city, giving
salvation to anyone and everyone who
came to it. It was paradise.
" Mumbai is now a
thriving city full of business and opportunity.
It is as busy and productive as a factory. In
my opinion Mumbai is one of the most
important cities in the world and is
absolutely fabulous. If all these changes to
the landscape hadnt happened we wouldnt
have the Mumbai we have today. If you
havent visited Mumbai you havent really
lived.
Top 5 things in Mumbai
1.The peninsula is a must see location
in Mumbai. It has a stunning view and is
completely mesmerizing
2.The cuisine in Mumbai is fantastic.
It is extremely delicious and a must have if
you go to Mumbai. The Maharaja
restaurant is an incredible place to eat
and you wont regret spending your money
there.
3.You must visit the Mahalaxmi
temple. It is a great place to see and if
you go there you will have a small taste of
Indian culture.
4.The Taj mahal palace and tower is
simply to die for. It is a beautiful building
taking on the name of Indias famous Taj
mahal in Agra.
5.And last but not least the Gateway
of India. It is like the one in New Delhi
where it was built with an everlasting
flame to show that we remember the
soldiers that died in battles. Although the
one in Mumbai was only built for the ships
that sailed of, it is still a beautiful place.

Present day Mumbai
Mumbai in the past
Mumbai:From
Mumbai used to
be a small village
inhabited by the Koli
people. They lived
by fishing and their
lifestyle was as
simple as 1,2,3. All
of that changed
when Portuguese
explorer Vasco de
Gama arrived in
Mumbai in 1498.
When he went back to
Portugal he met a wave of
questions like a river fish in
the ocean meeting wave after
wave of new creatures. He
wowed them with stories of of
the exotic goods and rich
culture.
After hearing Vasco de
Gamas story an English
company gave great interest
in India. They placed one of
their factories in Mumbai and
built a deep-sea port. This
attracted lots of labour, which
improved the citys
population and the amount of
money it earned. It also
brought many Indian
merchants through an offer of
religious freedom. Mumbais
business was growing faster
than rats could breed.
Within years, Mumbai was a
center of trade and had a
thriving business. It went
from a small village to a
bustling city. Now it is one of
the most important cities for
trade in India, and even Asia.
Fast Facts
1. Mumbai produces the least amount o
f good chess players in India
2. Mumbai has never had a major
natural disaster.
3. If Vasco de Gama had not found
Mumbai, it might have been the lowest of
the low today.
4. Mumbais population has increased
by several million people over the past 20

TRIPOLI, LIBYA!

FUN FACT!
The American School of Tripoli opened on
the 18th of September. On 26th of May
2011, the AST gave out there rst two
diplomas since 2005.
A bit about Tripoli
WHY SHOULD YOU COME HERE?
Tripoli is like an adventure, you discover as you go. Tripoli
is known as The Mermaid of the Mediterranean. Even
though it got completely destroyed during the protests
against Qadaf. The population of the people in Tripoli is
1,683,000 out of the 6,597,960 people in Libya. They
came to the city because of the great job and education
opportunities. Tripoli is very near the sea; this is useful for
water and trading. Did you know that Tripoli was under a
dictatorship for 42 years? Today, Qadda is dead and
Tripoli is back to the way and is as beautiful as sparkling
crystal. You will have great experiences in Tripoli. Just go
there and see all of the fantastic stuff you can do (and
eat!!!!).
Population and Resources
!
The Phoenicians founded the city Tripoli in the
7th century BC. Firstly, it is located near the
Mediterranean Sea; this is useful because it is near
water, water can be traded with other countries or
cities. In the past, people came to Tripoli because of
the calming climate. Today, people come to Tripoli
because of the jobs; most people are usually
employed in the oil industries. The people in
Tripoli discovered oil in 1959, this helped them
because they could build more schools using the
money they got. This added more people to the
population because people who live there have
somewhere study or work. The radio is a famous
form of communication in Libya with sponsored
news, religious and musical programs. In Libya,
there are about 1 million radios and more
than 17 hours of broadcasting. The city of
Tripoli has developed as fast as light adding
several schools and universities.

Past to Present
Tripoli was under dictatorship ever
since Colonel Qadda became leader of
Libya. Before World War II, Tripoli and
the rest of Libya had very few schools.
Only less than 10% of the population of
Libya could read and write. Then
everything changed when Libya found oil
in 1959. They invested in everything they
could like schools, vocational training
centers, and universities. As the result,
Libya now uses a western-style of
education. This uses six years Elementary
School, three years of Middle School,
and three years of High School.
Attending school is required for everyone.
The rst university was in Benghazi,
Libya and was built in 1955. They were
determined as a tiger trying to get food,
they built schools and universities that
can help their country. Now, most people
in Tripoli can read and write.

How People Have
Changed the Landscape
of Tripoli
This picture underneath shows how people
have changed the landscape of Tripoli. You
can clearly see that the place is completely
wrecked. Tripoli got destructed just like an
ant being a stomped on by a human. Before,
in the year 2007, Tripoli was a ne country
and wasnt destructed like today. Then,
around the year 2011, humans changed the
landscape by citizens protesting because of
Qadda. Tripoli was under a dictation and
the citizens were acting, Qadda and his
team answered back with bombing. Today,
because of this change, Qadda is now
dead and the city of Tripoli is back to how
it was last time and is as beautiful as a
ower.
Anecdote for
Tripoli
Jamie says:
I used to travel to Tripoli for
work. I worked in the oil
elds in the desert. It was in
Tripoli. I got to travel to
Tripoli countless times and I
admired how it looked in the
night. It was as colorful as a
rainbow and as crowded as a
beehive. A lot of Americans
used to work in the oil elds
but because of the rival of
Qadda and the Americans,
most of them got red and
they hired Australians. The
few years I spent in Tripoli
were some of the best years
of my life. I met some great
people and got to see some
tourist attractions on my non-
working days. Overall, this
was a great experience and
Im happy I took the job!
Tokyo is as crowded as the teeth in your mouth. Tokyo used to be called Edo
in the land of the rising sun, which was changed into Japan. It began growing
after World War 2. Japan wrote a new constitution emphasizing peace and
human rights. Japan cannot go through war again. Tokyo is now a modern
city, and has developed a second Tokyo Tower to enjoy. Tokyo has exciting
opportunities such as life stability, big compensations, and technology.
Everywhere I look, I see buildings and buildings. When I look down, I see
random peoples shoes.

! Japan went through World War 2 with Italy. The United States
joined forces with the United Kingdom. The United States stopped
trading with Japan, so Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. The United States
then wanted revenge against Japan. They dropped an atomic bomb in
the area of Hiroshima. Japan was turned into a developing country.
! Af ter World War 2, Japan wrote a new constitution
emphasizing ideas for peace and human rights. The Japanese decided
that they couldnt go through war again. Now, Japan developed their
country by trading with other nations for things they dont have. By
trading, Japan developed their technology quickly like a shooting
bullet. Today, Japan is a peaceful and hi-tech country.
How People Have Changes the
Landscape
" These pictures show how people made an impact on the
landscape of Tokyo. During the Meiji period in the year 1868 to 1912,
Emperor Meiji took power over Tokyo. Tokyo used to be eastern and
very traditional. Everyone used to wear kimonos, and the houses were
layed with tatami mats. During World War Two, other nationalities
started bombing Tokyo. After World War Two, Tokyo became as
productive as a factory, and it has been growing ever since.
" Today, because of this change, Tokyo is now very busy and
modern. Tokyo has developed their technology, so they re-build old
houses and made them temples. Tokyo started building more hi-tech
and more modern buildings. If this changed never happened, the
people in Tokyo including my family would still be wearing kimonos.
Also we would still be living in houses layed with tatami mats.

An Anecdote From Clara!
Clara says:
My dad had a surprise for us! He wanted to take us to this sushi
restaurant. About ten minutes later, we got there. There was a conveyer
belt, and there was sushi and other Japanese food on there rotating
around the restaurant. You can take any dish that you want and the
color of the plate shows how much you need to pay for that dish. It was
as unique as the stripe pattern of a zebra. There were delicious desserts
on the conveyer belt too. On New Years Eve, we went there again.
There were rice cakes as sticky as unwrapped candy. It was so cool and
I would love to go there again!

The city of Tokyo was established in 1868. It was located on the south coast, and emperor Meiji
powered it. Tokyo used to be called Edo. After emperor Meiji died, the city was then renamed Tokyo.
! Today, Tokyo offers a lot of opportunities like having big compensations, life stability and technology.
Some major industries and businesses in Tokyo today are technology, transportation, retail and other hi-tech
businesses. In Tokyo, 99% are Japanese and only 1% are from other nationalities. The main religions in Tokyo
are Shintoism and Buddhism, but there are other religions too. In addition, the western people are introducing
other languages like French, German, Italian, and other foreign languages.
" An interesting population in Tokyo today is the migrating population. 48.4% of Tokyos populations are
immigrants. The reason the immigrants came is because Tokyo has big compensations, and the immigrants want
to take that opportunity. Also, the immigrants want to take a chance for life stability. A life stability chance in
that Tokyo is as hi-tech as the future, so work can come more easily to them. Tokyo has a lot of opportunities
up its sleeve.

Look what happened!!
A Funny little moment
It was Sunday afternoon, and
me and my best child hood
friend Nic were walking down
to the chemist, we had
something interesting planed
for tomorrows school day. We
spent a few days, or more
researching all the right
ingredients to give the class a
show. We got to the chemist
we didnt know where to look
so we asked the guy at the
counter we gave him our list
and asked him if he had them,
to our delight he didnt seem
surprised or shocked at the
things we were asking for so
when we were done
everything was set. The next
day the special science
project we had planed was
ready. The day started out
like any other, we went to
classes, we wrote down thing
in our books and we did
everything we were told like
perfect angels. However when
it was time for science the
teacher told us begin and then
we began to work. Later that
day we ran away from the
science room that
mysteriously blew up after
we had just walked out the
door, which the re
department later found the
cause of the explosion was
gunpowder, and the source of
it was identied as our desk.
We were lead to the
principals ofce smoke
pouring through the corridor
and were threatened of
expulsion but got off!

How did we
change it?
In the city of Auckland people
have changed and altered many
different things in all sorts of
different ways, they have
improved all of the big things like
buildings, from 1-story markets,
to six story malls! And electricity,
enough to power the whole city.
All the small things like roads
being widened and architecture
became more modern as well as
all the things in the middle like
cars have become bigger and
faster and agriculture is more
efcient and housing is made
more luxurious. Since the early
20th century at around 1901
people have begun to change
things in this wonderful city, but
it did not happen instantly, the
changes slowly progressed as
technology became more
advanced until it became the
Beautiful modern city it is today,
it is as built up as a concrete
jungle. The landscape consists of
mostly hills and mountains but a
few plains can be found around
the city.
Westly street Before
Westly street after
Auckland is like a thrill ride
with a seat on it for
everyone. It twists and
turns, goes up and down
and you never know where
youll stop. Auckland is an
adventure with amazing
sights and friendly people.
It has good food and lovely
surroundings; Beautiful
animal life is natural in
Auckland as it even has
thirteen wildlife parks!
A quote Ive heard about
Auckland from an ISM
student is I wouldnt want
to live anywhere else.
Auckland, and everything
in it is sweet, rich like
fudge. Though it is as cold
as a freezer there are many
huge malls to go shopping
in for coats that will keep
you toasty warm through
your stay. The population
as of the last census is
1,377,200. Auckland is a
green paradise and people
come to enjoy nature
beauty and occasionally the
company of family and
friends.

POPULATION
The city of
Kathmandu was first
colonized in 1600
B.C. by the Gopala
tribe. Kathmandu
started to attract
people because of its
large trade center,
agricultural
opportunities, and
mountainous
atmosphere. People
still come to the city
for agriculture, but
they also come for the
countrys main
business,
administration, and
culture hub.
Kathmandu also
specializes in carpet
weaving, brick
making, cement
manufacturing, and
food processing.
As a result,
Kathmandu is host to
more than 671,000

south, north, east, and
west. There are a
variety of religions
too, such as Hindu,
Buddhist,
Muslim, and
Animist. The
main
languages
are Nepali,
Bengali, and
Hindi. An
interesting
thing about the city is
that there are more
than 60 ethnic groups
in the city alone.

ANECDOTE FROM A TOURIST

In Kathmandu there are long, curvy streets, and
along the streets there are lots of stalls where
you can buy hiking gear. They had gloves, hats,
scarves any thing hiking-related. They were
selling these to the people who wanted to climb
Mount Everest. I bought a North Face jacket
and I still use it now. It is as warm as a warm cup
of hot chocolate on a cold winter day.

PAST TO PRESENT
Kathmandu used to be
ruled by the king, Jayasthiti
Malla, and he had a great
architectural vision. He
would introduce architecture
to the city. He started to
build temples and shrines of
incredible beauty. The
variety of buildings was so
great that they called it the
forest of temples. The
temples were very precious
to the city, and if they were
destroyed by age, or a
natural disaster, the people
would rebuild them in the
same style as before.
Kathmandu is still filled with
the beauty of architecture,
but now it has some new
modern buildings. In a
nutshell, most of
Kathmandus culture is
based on their architecture.
THE ENVIRONMENT
These pictures show
how people have
changed the landscape of
Kathmandu. Before the
change, in the year 1960,
most of the land in
Kathmandu was
farmland. Then,
a little after
that, the
population
started to
rapidly rise. The
people started
to change the landscape
to meet the needs of all
the people. Houses and
apartments started to pop
up all over the place, and
many trees were cut
down. Kathmandu
adapted to the new
environment and became
more
city-
like.
Today,
because of the change,
the city of Kathmandu
isnt as natural as before,
but it is still truly as
beautiful as a cherry
blossom.

Introduction
Shanghai is a snowake with unique details! It always has been and that is one of
the reasons why it is called Chinas Oriental Pearl. The British established the city
of Shanghai in 1842. They forced trade but ended up improving Shanghais
economy. Today people come to Shanghai because they can make more money there
than other agricultural places. Also, some people come for tourism, Chinese food,
and Cultural activities. Today, because of this change, the city of Shanghai is now a
total tourist attraction, the lead in trend, and an important city.
Elaine says:
I had a terric time in Shanghai! I was awed by how modern it was! In spare
time, my co- workers and I would go on tours and look around. One day, we visited a
circus. We purchased our tickets and when we were nally at the ticket booth, we
quickly grabbed our seats. The rst few shows were pretty cool but they werent
abstract or surprising Just as I was thinking that, the Ringmaster announced that
there would be a special performance. All of a sudden, there was a hollow sphere as
big as a Hot Air Balloon! A performer with a motorcycle rode into the sphere and
started driving around in circles on the ceiling! Then another performer with a
motorcycle drove in! They looked a bit squished, but somehow they managed it! I
couldnt believe my eyes when 8 more people joined in! It was amazing

POPULATION AND RESOURCES
The British established the city of Shanghai in 1842.
Shanghai and other parts of China used to be isolated, but
when the British started the Opium War it opened Shanghai!
Before that, they traded silk and tea too. But they were as
reluctant as you would be if someone offered you a toothpick
for a billion buck! Some countries were jealous that Shanghai
was located near the ocean and the port because they had easy
access to water and sh.
Today people come to Shanghai because they can make
more money there than other agricultural places. Also, some
people come for tourism, Chinese food, and Cultural activities.
The population is 13.5 million. Did you know that
Shanghai has a target to reach 16 million people by 2020? This
is because they want to expand their culture and introduce
more people to it. Also there is an average of 0.96 births per
woman.
The major nationalities represented are Muslim,
Americans, Chinese, Han, Hui, Man, Mongolian, Zhuang, and
Islam.
Therefore, Shanghai is now one of the most successful
cities in China and maybe even in the world!

Shanghai is located at 31 degrees N, 121 degrees E.

HISTORY
Impact of the Past to the Present
Shanghai used to be and still is called Chinas Oriental
Pearl. When Shanghai discovered cotton, they immediately
started farming it and manufacturing cloth from it. Then all of a
sudden everything changed! Shanghai became an important and
busy trade and port center. They became so protable that they
didnt need to trade anymore. They didnt want or need to trade
with foreigners.
" In 1760, the government banned trade with
foreigners as fast as lightning but the British thought otherwise.
The British wanted silk and tea but had nothing to trade for it.
They ended up trading huge amounts of silver. China reluctantly
ended up agreeing. Later on, they ditched silver and instead traded
the illegal drug opium.
! As a result, the citizens of Shanghai and other
regions became addicted to it. Britains were desperate, so they
smuggled opium which led to money loss and arresting of British
merchants. The British were very angry and started the Opium
War. China ended up losing and was forced to be open to the
world. China became a worldwide trading center and realized they
had learned from the British (a.k.a. the Barbarians). Today, China
is still a worldwide Trading center and Shanghai will always be
Chinas Oriental Pearl.
How People Have Changed the
Landscape of Shanghai
" These pictures show how people have changed
the landscape of Shanghai. Before in the year of 1990, Shanghai
was a beautiful and peaceful city! It was also as green as a forest
awakening in the spring! Then around the year of 2010, humans
changed the landscape by realizing that trade was better than being
selsh and keeping all of the resources to themselves. When they
nally started trade, their economy rose.
" They then used that money to improve their city
by constructing more buildings, and renovating the current
buildings. They also improved education and jobs! Then they made
sure not to kill the animal life in the river by polluting but they got
rid of most of the trees. They did this because the government
wanted the people to be happy and to attract more tourists for
money. Today, because of this change, the city of Shanghai is now
a total tourist attraction, the lead in trend in China, and an
important city.
Amazing Architecture!

Shanghai is Shanghai noodles?! Yum!!!

A WORD ABOUT ISLAMABAD
Islamabad is as small as a peanut, but as fun as a roller coaster ride. Islamabad is one
of the most improved cities in the world. Islamabads population is like a mustard seed
very small at rst ,but sooner or later will turn into an immense tree, but this seed has
already grown. Islamabad has many trees and fresh air, but if you want to keep it that way
do not go near factories (unless you work there). Islamabad has many attractions like the
zoo, and the Margalla hills. Islamabad is a very amazing place its as nice as a rose, and its
a very nice tourist attraction.

POPULATION AND RESOURCES
Islamabad population and resources
The city of Islamabad became the capital of Pakistan when Pakistan
became an independent country in
1947. It is located in south central
Asia next to India.
People come to Islamabad
Pakistan because of tourism,
culture, and religion. In Pakistan
there is a big mining industry
because they have many minerals.
Another job is to sh because
many people in Islamabad eat sh.
The population of Islamabad is
1.7 million it is the tenth largest city
in the country. The people of
Islamabad do not use there natural
resources as much as they should.
The religion of Islamabad is Muslim
because it is a Muslim country, but
you can be a different religion
even if you live there. There is a
big variety of people in Islamabad. Islamabad is one of the many
places that not many people talk about unless under certain
How people have changed the

The people of Islamabad changed the
landscape. Before in the year 1945,
Islamabad was like a
giant dust cloud. No
vegetation, no roads,
and bad
transportation. Then
around the year
1990-2000, humans
changed the
landscape by the land being invaded
countless times, and people have brought
there own tradition to Islamabad and have
built many buildings and planted a lot of
vegetation, and that made Islamabad a
much better environment to live in.

Spicy food, smooth beaches of

place where dreams can come true,
its unpredictable but in the end is
right. Its like an adventure park
with all the friendly faces
everywhere. Youll feel at home as
soon as you set foot in this land of
paradise. During World War II other
countries were crushed to pieces like
cars in compressors and populations
dropped left, right and centre but
Colombo escaped unharmed
throughout the entire war. Later as
more and more people worked
towards world peace people from
allover the world came and colored
the city in as if it was a drawing. Did
you know The Fort was originally a
fort during the Portuguese and
Dutch periods but now simply the
commercial center of the country
and the site of most major ofces,
big hotels, some of the better
shops, banks and the main post
ofce.

A Perfect Day in Colombo
The perfect day in Colombo would start
by going out to HOP (House of
Pancakes) for breakfast where they will
ll you up with pancakes like a
container. Next you would go shopping
for the rest of the day at the mall the
take a meal at the Curry House before
you leave to beach, have a nice swim
and relaxation time before you head off
to the Dehiwala Zoo for the rest of the
afternoon. At night you head out to

Impact of the
Past on the
Present
by Jack Nicholls

Colombo is a land of rolling plains with a
few mountains in the south central. It
was once a trade port between Asia and
the West. Arabs who settled a trade port
on the coast rst established Colombo
after the natives. In 1505 the
Portuguese arrived and started small
business.
In the mid 17th century the Dutch came
and took over growing cinnamon in a
place called the cinnamon gardens. By
then the businesses had as much money
to splash around than the yanks.
When the British arrived the town
became a city. Major businesses were
destroyed by bomb attacks from LTTE
(a small terrorist group), which caused
them to disperse to the north and south
coasts.
As a result of that the city of Colombo is
now getting its businesses back on track
with people immigrating to the city. As
a result of that I would say Colombo is a
very slowly emerging city.
Changes to the
Landscape
In the rst picture in shows the poorly
built building but reects the way the
people struggled to built houses and
shows how they life in Colombo used to
be. But the second picture shows the
city of Colombo today thriving with
buildings projects.
Around about the 1990s the city of
Colombo changed their architecture and
started building massive buildings as
big as the Egyptian Pyramids. So now
Colombo is developing more industries
and businesses as the city receives
more money.
NOW AND THEN
Now
CINNAMON GARDENS
If your hungry the cinnamon gardens
is a great tourist attraction.
The People

The Arabs established the city of
Colombo in the 1930s after the
native Sri Lankans. They
established a trade port between
Asia and the West and settled there.
Major Business now are the
cinnamon and cotton trade. Today
many people immigrate to Colombo
for a better job, fantastic wildlife
and the Sri Lankan cricket.
Therefore Colombo is now attracting
more people for jobs and better
income.
The current population of Colombo
is 683,000 and still growing as new
businesses are starting all over.
Mainly made up of Dutch,
Portuguese and native Sri Lankan.
In the past people came to Colombo
for business and trade. Today people
come for the exact same reason so
why not relocate to a city as
beautiful as diamonds.

How people have changed the landscape of Kuala Lumpur
These pictures show how people have changed the landscape of Kuala Lumpur. In the year
1950, the road Bukit Batang was very quiet and there was no trafc, no bikes, and no cars. The
road was just peaceful. Now, humans changed the landscape by using better materials to create
many useful items such as cranes, and cement trucks. Bukit Batang is better known as Star Hill
because of all the tourists. They built Star Hill because the tourists would come for the food,
shopping centers, cafes, clubs etc. They did this so they would produce more and more money.
Star Hill was as crowded and busy as a big factory.
Population and Resources of Kuala Lumpur
The producers mining tin established the city of Kuala Lumpur. People came to my city in the
past because there was a trade route between India and China. Kuala Lumpur is located on the
western part of Malaysia. And this is important because people don't have to walk there like the
past. Today people come to Kuala Lumpur because of amazing architecture, tasty food, awesome
resources, and cool transportation.
The current population in Kuala Lumpur is 1.6 million people. The major nationalities
represented are Malay, Chinese, Indian, and people who lived in Malaysia for hundreds of years.
The resources in Kuala Lumpur are rubber, tin, oil, gas etc. The major industries and businesses
today include, farming, agriculture, rubber palm oil and coca, mining tin, oil and gas eld. Most of
the peoples religion is Muslim. The language is mostly Malay.
Today people choose to live in Kuala Lumpur due to the businesses, and transportation.
Therefore, Kuala Lumpur is now a lot better because of all the resources that the people have
produced

Anecdote of Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur for me is
spectacular. The food
there is astonishing
because it wasnt JUST
Malaysian food, it was
also Spanish food! It was
as spicy as red chili or
fire! The places where you
stay are also really nice.
I stayed in Shangri-La,
and there were a lot of
activities near my room,
such as: Kiddie Bungee
Jumping, tattooing,
watersides (swimming),
buffets, and after the
buffets we would always do
fire dancing. Kiddie
Bungee Jumping is
basically youre on a
trampoline and your tied
on to a rope, and you
start to jump up and down.
When I was leaving, I felt
bad but I had a really fun
time.

Kuala Lumpur Past to Present
Kuala Lumpur used to be a very weak country because the Dutch invaded them in 1641. Then
the British took over in 1786. From 1892-1957 Malaya was totally under British control except
during the Japanese occupation of 1941-1945.
In 1957 Britain granted independence to the federation of Malaya. The rst prime minister of
the republic was Tunku Abdul Rahman. Then in 1963 the federation of Malaysia was created to
include Malaya Sarawak, Singapore, and Sabuh but Singapore left in 1965. The next years were
spent in building a strong united nation. In 1981 Dr. Mahathir Mohamad became prime minister.
Malaysia made law such as: Belief in God, Following and defending the constitution, Loyalty to
the king and country, Rule of Law, Good Behavior and Morality.
Persuasive Paragraph
Kuala Lumpurs culture is as colorful as a rainbow. Lots of people came to Kuala Lumpur
because was a trade route between India and China. Did you now Kuala Lumpur also also has Twin
Towers? Kuala Lumpur used to be a very weak country because the Dutch invaded then in1641.
Kuala Lumpur has cool sights and structure, come and explore with me!

! Singapore is as beautiful as the shining reworks in the sky.
There are so many things to see and do in Singapore such as tourist
attractions, landmarks & monuments and museums & art galleries.
Singapore is very popular; the population of Singapore is 4,740,737
people. Did you know that Thomas Stamford Rafes separated the
Malay, Chinese, and Indian people into their own working and living
areas? Now, Singapore is its own country with its own government and
that has changed a lot. In Singapore the buildings look as modern as the
newest of the newest technology. So if you want to go somewhere
modern then go to Singapore!

These pictures show how people have changed the landscape of Singapore. Before in
the year 1954, Singapore had the largest trading port of Singapore since it was located
at the coast. Over the years Singapore has changed very much because there are more
apartments, houses and other kinds of buildings the buildings look as modern as the
newest of the newest technology. Before it looked old and there where no apartments.
Singapore has changed a lot comparing to it before.

Anecdote
Mrs. Parry says:
! The one thing I really like was the Singapore zoo. The
Singapore zoo was one of the most beautiful zoos I had ever
seen, it was so clean. The one animal I loved was the tapir. I
thought the tapir was like a mix of a pig and rhinoceros and
it also looked like they where wearing pants, because the top
bit of his body was black and the bottom bit was from white.
I also loved the meerkat, because they would guard their own
colony like a soldier guarding a castle. When theyre
guarding their colony they stand up and look around in a
funny way. Singapore Zoo is the best.

Population and Resources
The city of Singapore was established in 1819. It is located Southeast Asia, west of
Indonesia and south of Malaysia. People came to Singapore because it had a port and an
international trading link. Now people come to Singapore because of the tourism and
medical technology and treatment. You can now do a lot of stuff in Singapore like tourist
attractions, landmarks & monuments and museums & art galleries. There are two things
that Singapore is very good in; they are pharmaceuticals and medical technology.
Because it has good education, a nice life style, good transportation, a lot of people want
to go there.
! The population in Singapore is 4,740,737 this number is as big as the
planet Pluto. The nationalities are Chinese 76.8%, Malay 13.9%, Indian 7.9% and other
1.4%. The religions are Buddhist 42.5%, Muslim 14.9%, Taoist 8.5%, Hindu 4%, Catholic
4.8%, other Christian 9.8%, other 0.7% and none 14.8%. The ofcial languages are
Mandarin Chinese 35%, English 23%, Malay 14.1% and Tamil 32%. Singapore is a nice
place to stay and you would see a lot off multi-cultured and multi-religion country.
Past to Present
Singapore used to be a successful trading city. Singapore was located South of
Malaysia and East of Indonesia. Singapore is as modern as the apple company.
Singapore was a base for trading from about 400 AD. It had a small trading port where
Chinese and Indian traders were. The Chinese and Indian earned as much money as a
rich man. Trading at that time was big and important for them, because they wanted to
earn money.
Thomas Stamford Rafes was a British man. Mr. Rafes claimed that Singapore was
part of the British colony. Britain ruled Singapore for 130 years. Mr. Rafes separated the
Malay, Chinese, and Indian people into their own working and living areas. The separation
in Singapore still exists. After the British came, Singapore decided to be an independent
country. In 1965 Singapore was an independent country with its own government.

The Great Wall of China was
built, there was nothing to
protect China from Mongolia
so there was a lot of war
going on. It was around 210
BC when the great wall was
completed. That is as old as
my greatest ancestor. They
did this because if the Great
Wall wasnt built, China
wouldnt have been protected
and it would have been much
worse. Today, because of this
change, China is getting a lot
stronger in war and trade.
Also, it is getting very popular
because people come to see
the Great Wall of China as a
tourist attraction. It is popular
like a celebrity in a public

Population and Re"rce
The City of Beijing has been a center of government of China more than 2,000 years.
There are lots of different reasons why people go to visit or live in Beijing. First, they come to
see part of the Great Wall of China Thats as big as a thousand mansions put together!
Secondly, they come to see construction and repair. Lastly they come to see the
development of the city. Beijing is located in the Northern part of China. It is important that
Beijing is located there because the Great Wall of China is part of Beijing so it separates them
from Mongolia. China and Mongolia used to be against each other so the Great Wall of China
is in between those two countries. There are lots of things to see and do in Beijing so lots of
people like to go there these days.
There are lots of different things to see and do in Beijing, so the population is getting
bigger. The population right now is approximately 14 million people. The main occupations of
China are agriculture (10.2%), industry (27.8%) and services (34.1%) but they do have
different religions (Buddhism, Taoism, Confuciansism, Christianity, Islam and Judaism. An
interesting population fact about Beijing is that 21.5 million rural population of China live
below the ofcial absolute poverty line. I think the most interesting thing I learned about the
people of my city is that there are so many reasons why people go to China. Although the
poverty line is pretty high, that shouldnt discourage people from going there because there
are still lots of opportunities.

Shopping in
Agra
Story from: The Doherty
Family
During evening, our tour
guide let my family and I go to
a shop. When we went inside,
we saw many things going on.
There were clothes, Indian like
and casual, a man sowing, a
couple people viewing and
pictures of goats. I wondered
why there were pictures of
goats. I thought maybe their
fur was the source of the
clothes in the shop. But then
again there would be little cloth
from a goat and would be a waste.
Then a person from the shop
greeted us and welcomed us to
the shop. He led us to another
room full of cloths. There were
even MORE pictures of goats.
The person from the shop began
talking to us. He said that the
source of the cloth did come
from goats, but it wasnt the fur
of the body, it was from their
beards. He said that their beards
were really soft and smooth,
more than cotton, so it would
have a higher price. He picked up
a small cloth and then said that it
would cost I think something like
around 12 DOLLARS. I was like
wow, that is a bit expensive for a
piece of cloth, but then he let us
feel it. It was really soft, but in
my opinion it was only a couple
dollars higher than it should be.
Suddenly he kept picking up
other
cloths that got more expensive
but seemed to be better. But it
just kept going. Next thing I
knew, the prices were at the
HUNDREDS. The last cloth he
showed us was a small green
cloth. He lets us feel it. It was the
softest cloth you could ever
imagine. But he said its cost was
something like 350 dollars. I
started to wonder if we should
get it or not. I thought that we
should get it because it was really
soft, but then it was really
expensive. My mom decided that
we should not get it because even
though it was really soft, it would
be better just to have a normal,
cheap piece of wool. Then he
went to the other side of the
room. He starts showing us this
time carpets. This time the
carpets were just made out of
wool. We chose a few carpets.
Then the man led us to another
room. He laid the carpets then
brought a couple others. The
carpets were overpriced. But
then my mom the great bargainer
started bargaining. After a while,
we ended up with a small carpet.
Our reason not to buy the more
expensive ones is because we
didnt have so much money in our
pocket and also we needed to

In the rst picture, it shows the
clean Taj Mahal, with lots of
widespread land around it, showing
that it used to be a peaceful place. It
also shows the emptiness of a desert,
how Agra was a place not many people
went to and the lack of buildings and
structures. And lastly, there were so
many trees also showing the small
amount of industry.

In the second picture the rst thing you
see is the poverty. There are lots more houses
and people, showing the population growth.
The population is as much as a whole ant
colony but is nothing compared to the rest of
India The change to the landscape is the
amount of buildings and less nature.
POPULATION AND RESOURCES
Sultan Sikander established
the city of Agra in 1504. It was
located in the northern parts of
India, in North-Eastern Rajastan.
In the past the people came to
Agra because it was located near a
trade route and a river of water.
But that was not the only reason
people came to Agra.
They came for their
resources, land food and
power. After that, the
British took Agra,
advanced the country,
united it (maybe not in
the best way) and then
made them
independent. Today,
people come to Agra to
tour its landmarks, buy
items they cant easily
get anywhere else, and
learn about its
wonderful history and
culture.
The amount of gem shops in
Agra is like the amount of bees
there are in a colony. In almost all
tours, it will somehow lead you to
a gem shop. In the city, the three
largest religions are Hindu,
Muslim and Christian. Their
largest nationalities you see there
are European and Indian. In fact,
for some places Indians go to one
line, and foreigners go to another.
Their current population is about
1.3 million (small compared to the
large Indian cities). Their
industries are mostly the Media
and Bollywood. They have lots of
potatoes and cotton.
The country of India is
the third largest
producer of cotton.
There are lots of shops
for items with cotton.
Then comes he potato
production. India has
massive production for
potato. Its exports are
large all over the world.
Today, the city is not
only recognized by
India, but by the whole
world.

Agra used to be a transitional
city, where many empires and
forces kept changing power. The
city was built in 1502. But then
everything changed very soon.
The Mughal Empire took Agra in
1526 and held it for many years,
and then started taking over a
whole bunch of other cities, like
a disease spreading through
someones body. Eventually, Agra
was named capital in the Mughal
Empire. Since the Mughal
Empire got so big, many events
begun to rise. Princes and Kings
started building temples for their
loved ones, assassinations were
happening, ght for power begun
to rise, even a king was sent to
jail ( a really nice one) by his own
son! During these events Dehli
was built and then the name of
capital was moved there.
After these events, Agra was
released from the hold of the
Mughals, and then switched hold
with other empires. But then the
British arrived. The British knew
they couldnt win with force due
to Agras fortied defenses. So
then the British decided to start
slowly using trade and business
to get into Agra. They distracted
the king of Agra by getting him
drunk and then messed up Agra
to get power. So then they
claimed Agra and many other
cities, claiming power in 1803.
The British reorganized
everything, claimed its resources,
and then one of Agras main
languages became English.
# In 1857 the India
uprising occurred, then pushed
the British from Agra to other
cities. Their independence as

The rst people that came to Bangkok came thousands of years ago
from China as traders and ambassadors. This country is located near
China. It is neighbors with Cambodia. Another good thing of where
Bangkok is located is that it is on the coast to that means it is easy
to trade and enter the port. Some people come Bangkok for work,
but most of the people that come, come for the tourist attractions,
such as the kings palace, the river market, amazing hotels and the

Bangkoks history and growth has
taken place along the Choa Praya
River which is the main feature of
the city. Like all big cities,
Bangkoks landscape has changed a
lot over time. As the city developed
along the banks of the Chao Praya ,
which is in a basin that runs to the
sea, humans built canals (klongs)
that are manmade waterways.
Bangkok used to be called the
Venice of the East due to the
hundreds of of canals and
waterways that connected and
divided the city on either side of
the Choa Praya.
The rst canals were built in
Bangkok in 1782. The plan was to
have a circle of water around the
city and a brick wall for protection
against invaders. In 1783 a second
ring was built and added to the
canal system. In 1850 a third ring
was built in the east as the city was
expanding. Soon the defense system
was not as important as a transport
and trade system for the farm
products, especially sugar and rice.
More canals were built as more land
was used for farming and they also
helped with drainage as well as
transport.
You can see in the old photo,
people built their houses along the
banks and traders came on their
boats to sell their goods and farm
products at the markets along the
way. The canals were crowded and
bustling.
From 1900 onwards the Thai
government focused on building
roads so the transport system was
more efcient. No new canals were
built after 1915. They were
neglected or lled to make space
for roads. (See the photo that is
now a road where a canal used to
be).
The canals that are left are not as
important as in the past.
Commuters use the river and canals
to cross from one side of the city
to the other. Tourists visit the many
temples and 5 star hotels built along
it the river. They are not used for
trading agricultural goods as much
as in the past. You can see this in the
modern photo where tall building
and old temples follow the banks of
the river and canal system.
Also, today the small of sewerage
and diseases from the polluted
water has made the canals not a
pleasant place to be near. The liquid
waste of Bangkok is not treated and
goes into the river and water or
canal system.
Another downside of the canal
system is that in the rainy season
they overow and ood. It is said
Bangkok is sinking 2 inches a year as
it lies on a swamp. Some people
worry that by 2030 Bangkok will be
under water! So the landscape is
denitely changing in Bangkok.

serene there and such a
beautiful house to live there. I
wonder what happened to him

sad that he went missing and
never got back home to enjoy

think of Bangkok without
associating it with delicious
food. Thai food is one of my
favorite cuisines. I love the spicy
