ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

CARLISLE
Fall/Winter 2008 Headmaster Colonel Eric Boland is pictured with Mrs. Tommie Pylant as she receives the Service to Camden Award. A name plate is also mounted on the Wall of Honor in the Risher Administration Building that displays her name, the two Camden schools she worked for and the homecoming date.

Mrs. Tommie Pylant receives the Service to Camden Award during homecoming weekend.

The narrator, LTC Kelly Schrader, read what seemed to be an endless list of duties and responsibilities that Mrs.Tommie Pylant performed during her years at both Camden Academy and Camden Military Academy from 1950 to 1987. The Corps of Cadets honored her in parade as she received the Service to Camden Award from the headmaster, Colonel Eric Boland, during the homecoming weekend ceremony. Mrs. Py as she is so fondly called, came to Camden from Miami with her husband in 1950 and began working for Camden Academy. When the Risher family purchased the school, Colonel Lanning Risher flew Mrs. Py to Carlisle to learn the Carlisle Military School bookkeeping system. For 35 years, she used that system, along with a lot of common sense, to keep things straight at Camden. She was probably the most organized and efficient worker of her day on the CMA staff. Duties she held included the school secretary, bookkeeper, mailed account billings, paid the bills, answered the phone, typed (on a typewriter) all correspondence and bi-weekly grade sheets, recorded grades on transcripts, approved supply room purchases, prepared the money for the student allowance, kept the admission records and mailed all requests for information, prepared payroll checks for faculty, staff, maintenance, and dining hall employees, ordered school supplies, and was personal secretary for the headmaster, assistant headmaster, and commandant. Mrs. Py lived on campus for most of her years with Camden Academy and Camden Military Academy (presently the apartment building occupied by CSM Irtenkauf and Chaplain Skelton). The athletic directors campus home is named The Pylant House in her honor. Since her retirement in 1987, Mrs. Py has actively attended CMAs various homecoming activities, reunions, and dedications. Battalion Commander, LTC Elijah Kitts, staff, company commanders, and color guard are pictured during the award presentation during homecoming on October 25th.

Robert Murray Newsom, CMA 66, receives the Distinguished Alumni Award for 2008.

For the first time in four years, the Alumni Awards Committee presented the Distinguished Alumni Award to a former cadet and graduate from the class of 1966, Robert M. Newsom, of Chesterfield, S.C. Although Mr. Newsom was unable to attend the homecoming activities, headmaster emeritus, Colonel Lanning P. Risher, visited with Mr. Newsom and his wife, Brenda, and presented his award of a velvet shadowbox with the Camden Military Academy medal of the schools crest that hangs with a blue and white ribbon. Mr. Newsom received the Silver Star for gallantry in action in the Republic of Vietnam on August 8, 1969. He is also the recipient of the Purple Heart for wounds received on this date. He was permanently retired due to physical disabilities from his brave acts during this war. Other awards include the National Defense Service Medal; the Vietnam Service Medal; the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, 1960; Expert Rifle M-14; Expert Rifle M-16. His Silver Star and Purple Heart are on display in the Risher Administration Building. Mr. Newsom attended the academy for only one year and was an excellent athlete in both football and basketball according to Colonel Risher. He has never forgotton his roots by participating in the annual fund drive every year for the past twenty-three years. (See picture on page 9)

1ST ANNUAL SPARTAN CHALLENGE

A new tradition has been started at Camden Military Academy, where teamwork plays an important ingredient in the outcome of the days events. Each company, Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, and Band & Staff competed against each other in a day filled with fun and individual and team stats, that were calculated at the end of each event to crown the winners. You can see in the pictures on this page that the cadets were not only working together to accomplish each feat, but were having a good time. The challenge took place in September and the entire campus was filled with cadets, faculty, and staff members at every corner. Each company began during the last week of August by designing company flags that would represent their survival camp. During the first week of September, the cadets were notified of the company competition and briefed on the rules while explaining the general concepts including courage, honor, strength, and intelligence. Each company was divided into three groups and competed in three challenges in the same area for a period of 45 minutes. The campus sites and events included: brick shuttle (in wheelbarrows), soccer kick (blindfolded) on the football field and the 3rd event in the weightroom; water balloon throw or launch at the baseball field, blindfolded tennis, and slingshot assembly and bullseye targeting; at the outside basketball court, the egg drop took place and the soccer field held the rocket assembly/launching, as well as the catapult; the parade field held the beam walk and centipede walk, while the volleyball court tested 3-legged (2 tied together) volley; the swimming pool held a raft challenge, while the library and a classroom tested the cadets on citizenship, as well as academics. It was a long and hot day of activities that took place from noon

until dark. The corps was fed a grilled steak dinner while the points were being tallied for the winners. The evening of awards, a guest speaker (Perry Tuttle-Clemson 1981 Football National Champs), Christian rock band, and pizza capped off the end of the 1st Annual Spartan Challenge.

The results were:

Colonel Boland, headmaster, reports that CMAs academic goals are exceeding their targets, with the cadets scoring higher on the SAT and ACT tests. The school has also initialized a new program in recent years that allows students to obtain college credits, along with their high school credits, thus preparing them for a good start in college. CMA is considering the implementation of an inter-curricular writing program. This comes as part of an effort to bolster standardized test scores (ACT and SAT), whose results now more frequently include extensive writing skills sections. Im worried that writing skills are becoming weaker with the popularity of text messaging, emailing, and the jargon kids use with them, Colonel Boland said during a brief meeting in his office in December. In an effort to improve the writing program at CMA, Col. Boland had English teacher, Major Tariq Ghaffar attend the John J. Collins Teaching Seminar in the Columbia Conference Center, at Colonel Bolands direction. The seminar provided new ideas and approaches with regard to the improvement of writing skills from 7th grade to college levels. Dr. Collins has successfully applied his program in schools ranging from among the poorest and most dysfunctional high schools in Boston to Harvard University. The Collins Program offered several tools which will be used at CMA to improve the writing effectiveness of cadets. One is the use of Focus Correction Areas (FCAs), as defined and used by the program. Another is interdepartmental collaboration with regard to the application of these FCAs. During the seminar, Dr. Collins explained how teachers can create their own FCAs as they are needed. For example, if teachers notice a particular weakness in the completion of whole sentences or a lack of correct punctuation in the writing of a number of students, these weaknesses can be targeted as FCAs. Subsequent writing assignments, whether in English, Government, Economics, Social Studies, or History, can be used across the curriculum to target these weaknesses. Many other FCAs are suggested in Collins book, Improving Student Performance through Writing and Thinking across the Curriculum, which is being made available to all the CMA faculty members. Additionally, Collins suggests a five stage writing procedure designed to simplify the writing process, to make the idea of writing less intimidating for students and to allow teachers to focus on those areas most in need of correction. This process reduces paper-writing to its simplest level (brainstorming) and, through five-graded stages, allows the student to develop writing (among older students) into a virtually error-free draft suitable for publication. Major Ghaffar plans to present a more detailed proposal for applications of Dr. Collins ideas at an upcoming professional development meeting after Holiday Break. While teachers may have their own ideas about what will work best in their classrooms and in our unique school environment, it is doubtless that valuable tools can be borrowed from the seminar and used effectively at Camden Military Academy.
Cliff Brown, CMA 91, visited the CMA campus recently and spoke to the senior class. He is with the U.S. Department of Justice, DEA, and works as a polygraph examiner. He is presently in Alexandria, VA, but will be working in Bogota, Colombia, for the next four years. Cliff spoke to the cadets about the importance of integrity, character, morals, and values as an individual. He encouraged them to start now to decide what they want to do in life so that they can get the foundation that is needed to pursue a worthwhile and blessed life. He was also a member of the Marine Corps, which he also emphasized, was a major stepping stone to the direction that led him to the career that he now has and is really happy with.

ACADEMIC NOTES

Col. James F. Risher, Major James M. Grimes, Headmaster Office of the Headmaster Commandant CARLISLE MILITARY SCHOOL Bamberg, S.C. Mar. 22, 1943 Dear Patron: We have decided to hold commencement exercises on May 17th instead of May 31st. Almost all of the senior class and a good part of the junior class will have to enter military service shortly after the 1st of June, they having been deferred until after May 31st. If commencement were held on the original date, these boys would have practically no time at home and a number of parents have requested us to push graduation up, if possible. Another thing, the recent destruction of Brabham Hall by fire has made it necessary for us to use the gymnasium as quarters for cadets. Naturally, recreation is curtailed to an unusual degree. Extra curricular activities are therefore necessarily limited. It is our experience that boys must be kept busy in order to keep them happy and contented. We are, therefore, cutting out the usual spring holiday and having classes six days per week. This will give us ample time to complete every phase of scholastic work by the middle of May. In fact, they will have more actual school days than if we followed the original schedule. No part of class or military work for the year will be omitted. It will simply mean that week-end furloughs will have to be cut out and the spring holidays eliminated. We are advising you of this change so that if you are planning to attend commencement exercises, you may have plenty of time to complete your arrangements. Trusting that this will meet with your approval, I am Sincerely yours, Jas. F. Risher, Headmaster JFR:D (The above letter was found and mailed to us by Sammy Flake, Carlisle class of 1943.)

Varsity Soccer Team Coach, MSG Tom Hewitt, and his assistant, Capt. Jair Ararat enjoyed a challenging and very competitive spring season of 2008. During the regular season of play, the Spartans were undefeated. Beginning in February with practice games included, their record was 27-1-1 by the first of May. It is unprecedented that a soccer team that had so many games, with schools of all sizes including South Carolinas AAAA high school league teams, played as well as they did for a school this size! The team members were awarded their Varsity Letters during the spring sports athletic banquet, along with rings to commemorate their accomplishments at Camden Military Academy.

Civil Air Patrol News

Written by Cressler McArthur

The Civil Air Patrol wing at CMA has been busy recruiting cadets into their ranks. Cadets Keith Garrison and Cressler McArthur gave speeches about the Cadet Training Weekend (CTW) that they attended at the McCrady Training Center, near Fort Jackson. They explained that CTW was a weekend encampment where CAP cadets learned basic drill and ceremonies, as well as proper military courtesy. It was a different experience compared to here at Camden, said McArthur. But it is one that will help me better myself as a cadet here in CAP. The CAP wing continues to accept students into its organization, teaching students about avoiding drugs, and tobacco use, and how to live a healthy and productive life.

Debate Team News

Written by Cressler McArthur

The Debate Team, after years of inactivity, has been restarted once again, here at CMA. Cadets McArthur and Engel, acting co-captains, began teaching the other cadets basic debate concepts and protocol. It originally began as a Debate Club, in order for the proper students to be admitted into the team, and is still working on a trial period. If the school believes that the team is fit for competition, the team might leave campus for debates. All the students that were accepted into the club, had an 85 average in their grades, and were behaving in and out of school. I have a good feeling about this, said Cadet Engel. If we are good enough, we might be able to show how many talented students we have here in Camden. Sammy Sanders Flake, CMS43, had his heart recharged with new batteries and wiring recently and is feeling better. Plans to be at CMA in April for the Carlisle reunion,. Ray Alton Corbitt, CMS49, moved from Chesterfield, MO to Ballwin, MO and is doing fine. James W. Bradin, CMS54, had been hospitalized for heart problems and tests revealed that he was fine. James O. Dunlap, CA55, has had heart blockage surgery and is recovering well at home. Martain Alvia Farley, CMS67, has written a book, A March in Time, about his Carlisle experiences in the years 1964-1967. It is available at Amazon.com for $14.95. It contains a lot of fond memories of a teenaged boy, who, in conjunction with his twin brother, grew into a young man in an abbreviated amount of time...immersed us in a new world where honor, duty, and self-respect were indoctrinated on a daily basis. Arnie levine, CMA71, promoted to Deli Dept. Manager at the Fresh Market and made time to arrange his annual fishing trip with former classmates. Truette Dobson, CMA71, has been trying to recuperate since July 2007 from a bout with the mumps (second occurrence). Hes on his 9th doctor and has been a topic for a medical convention due to their being baffled by the symptoms that he has been experiencing. He has not been at work during this time period and sits and looks out the window. Whatever I have I know God has a plan. Wayne harold Wohlferd, CMA72, stopped by with his family to see the campus. He was here for 5 years and has special memory of Col. Beckham calling him Wolfhead. He was also on the battalion staff and remembers Mrs. Davis trying to get him to eat applesauce and cottage cheese; was very impressed with all the changes on campus and how nice it looks. Ray Coit Yarborough, CMS74, writes in regard to the death of Jim Watson, This is truly bad news. I tried to look Capt. Watson up after graduating from Carlisle and have thought of him quite often over the years. I regret not researching it further and had no idea that he moved to Camden, only a few miles from here. I have 19 years of formal schooling and considered Jim Watson not only one of the kindest people I can remember, but also one of the most competent teachers I encountered. I know that many lives have been enriched under Jim Watsons tutelage. His unspoken lessons on how to treat others have truly left the world a better place. ed Cottingham, CMA74, had a bit of luck in March 2008 by hitting a hole in one during a sponsor event for The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate Golf Tournament. He won a Pontiac Solstice on hole 14 (par 3). Timothy S. lemaster, CMA74, has been inventing products for 25 years now in the safety field and computer and automotive areas. 50 Years Ago at Carlisle...Camden Academy Acquired by CMS...Carlisle Military School has recently acquired facilities for a new school, Camden Military Academy, in Camden, S.C...The student body numbers about ninety-five and is still growing... Carlisle Band Leads Parade At Camden...under the direction of Maj. William Scaffe, the Carlisle Band led the cadet corps of Camden Military Academy in their first dress parade, when Maj. Lanning P. Risher, headmaster, and his faculty entertained the citizens of Camden, parents of the cadets, and friends, with an inspection, parade, and reception on Sunday afternoon. Carlisle Officers Visit Camden Military School...The Carlisle commissioned officers, accompanied by Maj. Waddy Thompson visited Camden Military Academy...to give the officers of the two schools, an opportunity to become acquainted...As one officer stated before leaving, Camden already looks a little like Carlisle, they even have Beetle Bailey. Snow Blankets Carlisle Campus...the icy fingers of winter have grasped Carlisle...the front of the campus looked like a New England country scene...snowball fights were numerous... The Christmas spirit was truly in the air...Many of the cadets had never seen snow...while others, who were from northern states, thought it was just another snow. Nevertheless, it was the heaviest snowfall in 44 years for this area of the state. What are YOuR fondest memories of Carlisle? If you have any video of the era, the alumni office would like to receive a copy. We hope to see you at the reunion in April!
