YOUR COMPLIMENTARY WEEKLY NEWSPAPER SINCE 2006 March 9, 2012
Business Mentors Of New Zealand To Boost Local Businesses
Small and medium business enterprises
in Fiji will soon be boosted through the
assistance of the Business Mentors of
New Zealand.
An organisation consisting of
successful New Zealand business
mentors volunteers, met with the
Attorney General and Minister for
Commerce Mr Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
Minister Sayed-Khaiyum said the
prospects of this venture, which will be
undertaken with the Fiji Commerce and
Employers Federation (FCEF) is exciting
and creates opportunities for locals.
Primarily what they are here to
do through the Fiji Commerce and
Employers Federation is to identify
local business that will be mentored and
provided assistance with individuals in
drawing up business plans or marketing
plans, Sayed-Khaiyum said.
The Attorney General said that it is also
interesting because it ties in with the
Bainimarama governments focus on
assisting small to medium enterprises.
Business Mentor New Zealand chief
executive offcer Mr Ray Schofeld said
theyve been in existence in New Zealand
for some 20 years and have assisted more
than 60,000 businesses there.
We have some 1,800 volunteer mentors
so by the end of this year will develop this
program with some countries throughout
the Pacifc and we will have 600 businesses
in the program throughout the Pacifc and
will go on from there, Schofeld said.
Fiji Commerce and Employers
Federation Chief Executive Offcer
Nezbitt Hazelman said they are
delighted that the FIJI Government has
thrown its support behind the initiative.
The Fiji Commerce and Employers
Federation has recently changed
its name from the Fiji Employers
Federation, the focus is now on
Commerce, we are here for small
business, weve open up our doors
to the micro and Small and Medium
Enterprises companies so there is
an infux of new companies coming
through the door. We believe that in
the short and medium term this is
where the growth is going to happen,
Hazelman said.
General Manager Pacifc Ian Furlong
said that business owners in Fiji
can enroll in this program by either
going on to visiting their website
www.businessmentors.org.nz or by
contacting the FCEF.
Once you enroll I will be bringing
on the 26th of March for one week 10
successful business mentors who will
work with you or what your business
objectives are, what keeps you awake at
night, what are the issues and what are
the opportunities for your business,
Furlong said.

ANZ Launches Pacifc Money
Transfer Card
The cost of sending money to family
and friends in Fiji from Australia will
now be cheaper.
This is after ANZ launched the
Pacifc Money Transfer Card, a
two card pre paid VISA that makes it
more affordable to remit money from
Australia to certain countries in the
Pacifc.
ANZ Head of Retail Banking Fiji,
Graham Meecham said remittances
make an important contribution to
Fiji, both to family incomes and to the
GDP of the country's economy and
this product is frst of its kind for the
Pacifc.
According to the Reserve Bank of Fiji,
the total recorded remittance infows
to Fiji in 2010 were approximately
$300million.
This places Fiji in the top ten recipients
of personal remittances in East Asia
and the Pacifc.
Additionally, the Reserve Bank of Fiji
reports that 18 cents for every dollar
sent ends up in fees, which meant that
$54million is lost in fees.
Bob Carr Will Offer An Olive
Branch To PM
It seems new Australian Foreign
Minister Bob Carr will begin to reverse
six years of hard line Labor policy
against the Fijian government.
According to Adelaide Now, Carr will
offer an olive branch to Prime Minister,
Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.
The new Foreign Affairs Minister is
planning to travel to New Zealand to
meet NZ Prime Minister John Key to
discuss Fiji's banning from the Pacifc
Islands Forum in 2009.
Incentives for Fiji are likely to include
lifting some of the sticks against
the government, including the forum
ban - and some reversal of Australian
sanctions set up in the wake of the
coup.
The sanctions also bar entry or transit
through Australia for Fijian citizens
declared by the NZ Foreign Minister,
such as members of the military, the
government, their families and other
supporters of the Fijian government.
The New Zealand talks would focus
on common regional interests in the
Pacifc Islands Forum, the Regional
Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands
and Pacifc maritime surveillance.
Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr
Transam Fiji Linking The Pacifc
Transam Fiji has signifcantly
expanded its operations in the country
with the appointment of its frst
executives, as well as an expansion of
its current offce at the Williams and
Gosling building in Suva.
The company is the exclusive agent for
two shipping lines, Pacifc Direct Line
and Reef Shipping, who between them
operate eight ships in the Pacifc the
biggest in the region.
Transam Fiji was set-up in 2007
as a joint venture between locally
owned freight and transport company
Williams & Gosling Limited, PDL and
Reef Shipping.
Mr Stephen Blade, a New Zealander
with 28 years experience in the
shipping industry has been appointed
General Manager and is confdent that
Transam Fiji will play an important
role in the development of Fijis ports
into the future.
It is a different Transam Fiji than when
it started. Its a vibrant, thriving agency;
we started with 5 staff members and
now have 26 who look after multiple
ships, multiple clients and a lot more
trade within the Pacifc. Im very proud
to be given the responsibility to come in
here and take the wonderful team into
the next phase of their development.
said Mr Blade.
Since they started, new shipping routes
have been established in the Pacifc,
with more frequent calls to regional
islands such as Marshall Islands and
Kiribati in the North Pacifc, all linking
through Fiji.
Their latest vessel, Southern Cross, has
been introduced to service Tonga and
Samoa from Fiji, and there are plans to
expand into other parts of the Pacifc
such as Solomon Islands, Papua New
Guinea and the Christmas Islands.
All of this means that Fiji is becoming
a hub, the centre for gathering and
sending cargo into the region.
Transam currently operates services
from Asia, New Zealand and Australia
to Fiji and to New Caledonia, Tahiti,
Vanuatu, Samoa, American Samoa,
Tonga, Norfolk Island, Wallis Island,
Futuna Island and Tuvalu with Transam
offces in some of these Pacifc Island
countries.

Laisenia Qarase Wants In On

Fijis deposed Prime Minister Laisenia

Qarase said he would like to take part

has not received any invitation from

He said the SDL will be meeting

the 2014 election and those eligible

This meeting will be on how the party

and also decide whether I will contest

India Contractors To Train FSC Staff
THE Fiji Sugar Corporation says it
could have been wrong in blaming the
dismal performance of the sugar mills
in recent years on the 2006 $86million
mill upgrades.
Executive chairman Abdul Khan said
Indian contractors engaged to do the
upgrades may have satisfactorily
performed the upgrades but might have
failed to correctly instruct operators on
how to properly use machinery and
equipment.
As a result, he said, contractors from
various companies in India have been
brought in to train FSC on the proper
use of the upgraded mill machines.
"As part of our review of the mill upgrade,
we found that a number of the Indian
companies that provided the equipment
feel that their equipment is suitable but the
operations of this equipment may be the
issue. To overcome this we have decided,
in consultation with these suppliers, to
engage "shop foor" trainers to work with
our operators. We hope that the transfer
of the knowledge will overcome the
operational issues associated with the
equipment," said Mr Khan.
He added that while the contractors are
covering some of their expenses during
the training exercise, the majority cost
is being absorbed by the FSC.
Fiji Remains Pacifc Leader On Per Capita Basis
Fiji is still the biggest economy in
the Pacifc on a per capita basis, says
ANZs chief economist Asia Pacifc
Paul Gruendwald.
He told an economic briefng session
on Can Asia-Pacifc Fly Solo?: Fiji's
Prospects for 2012 in Suva, Papua
New Guinea dominates the Pacifc on
Gross Domestic Product, but Fiji has
the highest per capita income.
He said Fiji's growth of about two per
cent to 2.5 per cent was because of
tourism demand.
He said if the proposed mining
ventures came to fruition, it would
boost the economy as PNG's economy
is boosted by high prices for its
commodities.
Permanent Secretary for Finance
Filimone Waqabaca said that they will
be relying on mining of bauxite and
gold to boost economic growth.

increase tourist arrivals from Japan.
This was conveyed by Japans new
resident ambassador to Fiji His
Excellency Eiichi Oshima following a
meeting with Fijis Minister for Foreign
Affairs, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola.
Fiji is a beautiful country with warm
and very friendly people. It is renowned
for its beautiful scenery and white sandy
beaches. I hope to improve tourist
fgures from Japan during my tenure
as Ambassador here and will work on
avenues to ensure that, Ambassador
Oshima told Minister Kubuabola.
Ambassador Oshima said that while
the meeting provided an opportunity
to look at current relations between the
two countries, it was also an opportunity
to acknowledge the progress since the
establishment of formal diplomatic
relations between the two countries 40
years ago.
On the political front, Ambassador
Oshima offered assistance to Fijis
democratization process so that Fiji
could successfully implement its
Strategic Framework for Change

Sea-Threatened Kiribati Mulls
Moving People To Fiji
The low-lying Pacifc island nation of
Kiribati is considering buying land in
Fiji to resettle its population which is
threatened by rising sea levels.
Kiribati's President Anote Tong says
he is involved in talks with the Fijian
government to purchase land on Vanua
Levu - Fiji's second largest island.
Mr Tong says this is the last resort to
save more than 100,000 islanders.
Some of Kiribati's 32 coral atolls -
which straddle the equator - are already
disappearing beneath the ocean.
None of the atolls rises more than a few
metres above the sea level.
Mr Tong says that climate change is
daily battle for Kiribati - but admits
that it is one that his country would
ultimately lose.
However, relocating the entire
population to Fiji - more than 2,000km
(1,300 miles) away - would be a
monumental challenge, Phil Mercer in
Sydney reports.
Kiribati's offcials hope that many
people would also be allowed to settle
in other countries in the vast region,
including Australia and New Zealand.
Previously, Mr Tong suggested
constructing man-made islands
resembling oil rigs for people to live
on.

the future. ICBC said I was overreacting and offered $17,000. My case settled for $400,000 at mediation. MR. S.
The damage to my car was only $700. ICBC said I could not have been injured; but I was. My lawyer finalized my
claim for $28,000 plus expenses. MISS M.
ICBC offered me $32,000 to finish my case. I was off work for 6 months and saw a specialist because of my jaw
injury. I couldnt mop the floor or clean our bathroom without help from my children. I received $200,000 through
my lawyers efforts. MRS. S.
The damage to my vehicle was about $1,700. ICBC said this was a Low Velocity Impact (LVI) and refused to pay me for
my injuries and physio costs. My lawyer obtained more than $45,000 for me. MRS. B.
A car hit me as I walked across the street. ICBC blamed me because of the colour of my clothing. My lawyer worked
hard and obtained necessary evidence. My case settled for over $300,000. MRS.

Export Of Fruits And Vegetables To Normalise Soon
The export of locally grown fruits and
vegetables that was hindered by the
recent devastating foods and heavy
rain is expected to normalize in three
to four months.
The recent foods caused substantial
damage to the agriculture sector in
the Western Division but reports have
indicated that farms in the Ba district
were the most affected.
Agriculture Offcer Ba, Saidi Achari
said about 1,100 hectares of crops
valued at about $5 million were
damaged by heavy rain and foods.
Close to 700 hectares of farms have
been damaged due to foods while 400
hectares of crops were destroyed by the
continuous heavy rain for three days
and stagnant water in the felds, said
Mrs Achari.
The value of the crop damage was
high because vegetable farms were
mainly near the river banks due to the
availability of water and fertile land
which produced quality vegetables,
she said.
Mrs Achari added that in recent years,
crop production in Ba had increased due
to sugarcane farmers diversifying into
cash crops to raise their income level.
From the district of Ba, about 60
percent of the farmers have lost their
crops either due to fooding or stagnant
water in the felds, said Mrs Achari.
The crop damage had major effect
on the export market as most of the
farmers in Ba province were planting
for the overseas markets, she said.
Mrs Achari said that exporters from as
far as Sigatoka were buying vegetables
from Ba but this has temporarily stopped
as farmers supplying vegetables to the
exporters have lost all their crops.
Ba farmers produce about 40 percent
of the total vegetable exports from the
Western Division.
The export of vegetables from the
Western Division has substantially
dropped following the devastation by
the foods and heavy rain in the area.
The Operations Manager at Mahens
Export in Sigatoka Mr Saten Kumar
said that there has been 50 percent
drop in the exports of vegetables after
the foods.
Mr Kumar said presently the Company
was exporting about $20,000 worth
of produce every week compared to
$40,000 in the same period last year.
He said the major reason for the drop
in exports was due to the devastation
caused to the farms in Ba, Lautoka,
Nadi and Tavua which supplied
50 percent of the Companys total
vegetable exports.
Mahens Export used to export 35
different agricultural produce but now
only fve including okra, eggplant, curry
leaves, taro leaves and turmeric are
being exported and those are supplied
by the Sigatoka valley farmers, said
Mr Kumar.
However, with the assistance provided
by the Agriculture Department and with
the concerted efforts of the farmers,
the export of fruit and vegetables from
the Western Division is expected to
normalize in few months.
Depending on the crop type and the
extent of damage some farmers will
be able to start exporting within the
next three months while some will take
more time due to heavy siltation on the
farms which will take time to dry before
cultivation can start, said Mrs Achari.
Some farmers have started to plant
with whatever planting materials they
had, their priority will be food security
frst, said Mrs Achari.
It will take about one to two months
for the early maturing vegetables like
okra, bean and cabbage to normalize
the market supply while chillies,
eggplant and fruits like pawpaw will
take more time, said Mrs Achari.
Meanwhile there is suffcient supply of
some fruits and vegetables in the local
municipal markets and roadside stalls.
Produce that are available in the
market are bananas, vudi, breadfruit,
avocado, pineapples, dalo, cassava,
dalo-ni-tana, kumala, rourou, moca,
okra, eggplants, rosella leaves, water
cress and pumpkins are in reasonable
supply but still not meeting demand.
At the moment eggplant is sold at
$2.00 per heap of about six to seven
eggplants, a small bundle of bean and
cabbage are sold from $3.00 to $4.00
and $3.00 respectively, she said.
There is heavy reliance on imported
foods, particularly rice, four, potatoes,
dhal, tin meat and tin fsh.
Mrs Achari urged the farmers to start
cultivation as soon as the feld dries
especially for food security and local
market supply.
There is suffcient amount of planting
materials for cassava with the farmers
in the Western Division.
All affected and non affected farmers
in the Western Division have been
advised to plant all available kumala
cuttings, and short term food resilient
vegetables like rourou and moca for
short term food security.
The Agriculture Department will start
distributing kumala cuttings and dalo
suckers to the affected farmers from
next week.
Farmers should be prepared for
natural disasters and be able to strive
back with farming as their income
depends on it, said Mrs Achari.
PMs Relief Fund Stands At

Fiji Cassava In Demand
The increase in demand for Fijis
yellow cassava variety has prompted
the Agriculture Marketing Authority to
increase its export.
The Authoritys sales manager Mr
Alifereti Yaya said the frst container
load was exported in January this year
while the second load will be packing on
the third week of this month for export.
We managed to fulfll the order from
Australia in the frst consignment with
the 2 tonne load of yellow cassava and
we are encouraging farmers to supply
us with more yellow cassava, Yaya
said.
He said the supply of yellow cassava
for export is from farmers in the
Tailevu and Naitasiri province.
We have been told by Agriculture
Offcers in Kadavu that farmers
there will be able to contribute to the
supplying of yellow cassava as well,
Mr Yaya said.
He said the concept now is for AMA to
liaise with Agriculture Offcers around
the country who will then liaise with
farmers on when to supply yellow
cassava.
The Agriculture Offcers will supply
us with the details on the volume of
yellow cassava available and when
they can be ready to be brought to our
Nausori warehouse, he said.
The authority said that it will now
closely liaise and coordinate with
relevant stakeholders including
Government Agriculture offcers and
the Ministry of Provincial Development
in particular with offcers like Assistant
Roko Tui to liaise with farmers on the
crops they need for export.
M Yaya said their market in Melbourne
is happy about the quality of yellow
cassava that went on the frst
consignment.
Pacifc islanders and Africans in
Australia are the biggest buyers of
this yellow cassava and I encourage
farmers to plant more, Yaya said.
He said in the future they are expected
to supply to other cities in Australia
and even to markets in New Zealand.
Fiji's exports are well balanced
compared to those of other countries in
the region.
This was the view of Australia New
Zealand (ANZ) Bank chief economist
Doctor Paul Gruenwald who spoke at
the Holiday Inn in Suva.
Dr Gruenwald said Fiji had a wide
product range, wide range of markets
and was best overall in the Pacifc.
Re-emphasising his previous
comments that the revival of private
sector credit would fuel GDP (gross
domestic product) growth, Dr
Gruenwald however said investment
growth remained somewhat sluggish
as lower policy rates had yet to spark
higher investment credit growth and
activity.
"This year, credit is expected to remain
upbeat, supported the new small
medium enterprise credit guarantee
system and the required Agriculture
and Renewable Energy Loan ratios.
"As the Australian and New Zealand
currencies appreciate, many travellers
are foregoing trips to the 'local' Pacifc
Islands, and opting to trip to the
America or Europe.
"Fiji tourist arrival growth remains
upbeat as it has one of the most
developed tourism sectors in the
Pacifc," Dr Gruenwald said.
"The outlook for tourist receipts is
bright, as wealth in Asia continues to
grow rapidly and the areas become
more interconnected," Dr Gruenwald
said.
He added that if the Aussie dollar got
stronger, Australians might choose to
travel to the more expensive European
countries or perhaps the US.
Governor of the Reserve Bank of
Fiji Barry Whiteside welcomed the
comments made by the economist.
Mr Whiteside was also optimistic of
credit growth driven by the commercial
sector.

The 300,000 tonne reduction in cane
production will cost the country
close to $27 million in lost raw sugar
revenue.
Fiji Sugar Corporation executive
chairman Abdul Khan confrmed this
to the reporter.
Last week, the Sugar Cane Growers
Council said damages caused by the
January foods could see a reduction
in cane production of up to 300,000
tonnes.
When compared to a report conducted
by the International Union for
Conservation of Nature and Natural
Resources (IUCN) -- where crop
damage from the 2009 foods was put
at 131,400 tonnes with an estimated
loss of $8 million from potential
sugar revenue - it is easy to see that
the January 2012 foods has had a
devastating effect on the industry.
Adding this to the damage bill of $18
million to cane crops, infrastructure
and machinery, the fooding puts the
industry's total loss at a much higher
fgure.
Mr Khan said while the loss was
substantial, there were limited steps
that could be taken to reduce the effects
of natural disasters like foods.
"This is quite signifcant. The sugar
loss could be around 27,000 tonnes
amounting to gross revenue loss of
some $27 million," he said.
"At this time, it is very diffcult to
completely eliminate the likely losses
due to the recent foods."

Migrated Figures Decline
THE number of Fiji citizens that
migrated last year dropped by about 8
per cent from 4213 in 2010 to 3866.
After reaching a high of 5172 in 2008,
the number of Fijians leaving our
shores has been dropping. There were
4832 Fijians that migrated in 2009.
The Bureau of Statistics categorized
the workers into 11 headings -
legislators, senior offcials and
managers; professional workers;
technicians and related workers;
clerical workers; service workers;
skilled agricultural and fshery; craft
and related workers; plant and machine
workers; elementary occupations;
armed forces and others.
According to the statistics released
by the Bureau of Statistics, those that
fell into the Others category continued
to top the list with 1541 leaving our
shores last year.
Professional workers were the second
highest migrants totaling 980 in 2011.
At least 618 in elementary occupations
migrated last year. Last year, a
report "Development on the Move:
Measuring and Optimising Migration's
Economic and Social Impacts in Fiji"
revealed that people who migrate were
generally of productive working age
and tended to be better educated and
trained than non-migrants.
The report stated that more than 59
per cent of all absent migrants were
professionals and only 5 per cent
belong to the unskilled category.
It was also estimated that about 28 per
cent of the migrants were university
degree holders or with higher
qualifcations.
These migrants have tended to stay
abroad for longer periods of time
(fve years or more) in virtually all
destination countries.
Reasons behind emigration as stated
by the report were better economic
opportunities available in other
countries, which was a dramatic change
from earlier periods, when political
instability was the main push factor.
The report also acknowledged the rapid
growth in the amount of remittances
sent to Fiji from 2000 onwards.
Health Ministry Records 54 New
Hiv/Aids Cases
Fiji's Ministry of Health recorded 54
reported HIV/AIDS cases in 2011.
Ministry of Health spokesman Peni
Namotu says this is the highest ever
and brings the number of reported
cases from 1989 to 2011 to 420.
Namotu said the number of reported
cases increased due to the successful
campaign run by the ministry and other
stakeholders as people become more
confdent and came out.
People are now more confdent and are
willing to know their HIV/AIDS status
because they know of its importance
and how it will affect their health if
they dont know their status," he said.
He said the availability of clinics and
free services has also prompted people
to come forward.
In the past, taboos prevented people
from coming forward or even talking
about sexually transmitted diseases
but times have changed and people are
more aware, he said.
He urged people to take responsibility
of their health and visit hospitals for
regular checkups.
The ministry will spend $90,000 to buy
anti-retroviral medicine for HIV/AIDS
patients.
Fiji becomes the only Pacifc island
nation to buy this medicine.

'Jealous About What' Asks Chaudhry
Fijis former Prime Minister and
Fiji Labour Party Leader Mahendra
Chaudhry says Prime Minister
Commodore Voreqe Bainimaramas
outburst over his remarks about delays
in the constitution review process is
not surprising.
One who professes to be a leader must
learn to take criticism in his stride and
respond rationally; otherwise he is not
ft to lead, he said.
Bainimarama accuses me of being
jealous and not doing much for
bringing about a better Fiji during
my political career. Besides, he wants
me to shut up and not interfere in the
work of his government.
Jealous about what, I ask? Is there
anything worth being envious
about looking at the record of his
administration?
And why should democratically
elected political leaders be told to
shut up when they have every right to
raise questions and concerns about the
future of Fiji.
He also questions where I was in the
last 30 years or so when Fiji had a
racist constitution? My advice to him is
to read Fiji politics of the last 27 years
to get the answer, he adds.
According to Chaudhry, the only truly
racist constitution Fiji ever had was the
1990 Constitution which was imposed
on the people after the military coup of
1987.
The 1970 Independence Constitution
and the 1997 Constitution were
enacted by Parliament following
agreement between the leaders of the
various communities who call Fiji
their home. The electoral provisions
in these constitutions may not have
been perfect from the standpoint of the
ideal one vote one value system of the
advanced democracies.
These Constitutions guaranteed the
fundamental rights of our citizens,
including an independent judiciary,
impartial law enforcement agencies
(Police and DPP) and a free media.
These freedoms are non-existent
today under an autocratic system. As
such, does it make sense to harp about
perfecting our electoral system when
the people are deprived of their basic
freedoms and liberties as citizens?
Bainimarama is wrong when he
assumes that I am jealous because I
feel left out of the constitution making
process.
The part I play as the democratically
elected leader of the FLP cannot be
denied by anyone if the process is to
be considered legitimate, credible and
acceptable to the people of Fiji as well
as the international community, he
concluded.
Bainimarama in an interview with the
media had said a jealous Chaudhry
should not interfere in his government's
work as he did not think about bringing
about a better Fiji during his political
career.
He made the comment after Chaudhry
told Radio New Zealand that the
Bainimarama government continues
to bluff over its promises to start
discussions over a new constitution.
Meanwhile, Commodore Bainimarama
will outline the process for the
constitution consultations this Friday.
Infation Rate Drops
The headline infation fell to 5.9 per
cent in January from 7.7 per cent in
December, 2010 because of the fading
of one-off price increases and easing
commodity prices, says the Reserve
Bank of Fiji.
It added that the recent foods,
however, are expected to impact on
infation outcomes in the next two to
three months through higher prices for
agricultural market items.
However, with the supply of these
items expected to normalize in the
months ahead, year-end infation
forecast remains at 3.5 per cent.
Our foreign reserves at the end of
February were around $1.49billion,
suffcient to cover 4.7 months of
retained imports of goods and services.
The Reserve Bank said cane and
sugar production and visitor arrivals
improved while gold and electricity
production noted annual declines.
Consumption demand expanded,
refected by partial indicators including
net Value Added Tax (VAT) collections.
Higher personal incomes, buoyant tourism
activity and stable remittances continued
to support consumption activity.
However, investment levels remained
subdued.
For 2012, consumption and investment
are expected to be positive on account
of higher incomes, lower corporate
and personal tax rates and increased
investment incentives extended by the
government through the 2012 National
Budget.

Korean Students Graduate
A TOTAL of 77 Korean students have
graduated in the English as Second
Language and Business Communication
programme at the Fiji National
University Nadi Campus, joining their
peers who have secured jobs in markets
such as Australia and the United States
after graduating from the programme.
Presenting the graduates with their
certifcates, the Universitys National
Training and Productivity Centre
Director Kamlesh Prakash assured that
their English skills would help launch
a successful career.
I am delighted to note we have 77
students graduating in stage two and three
of the programme, Mr Prakash said.
We also know over 60 students have
graduated in the frst stage of the
programme and they have returned
to their respective places and some
are already working in countries like
Australia, Canada and US.
The collaboration with Korea began
on January 28th last year through the
offcial signing of the Memorandum of
Agreement between the Canada Gate
College and FNU for a period of 3 years.
The work given to the University was
to prepare students in the ESLBC and
give them profciency in terms of basic,
intermediate and advanced level of
understanding in these subject areas,
Mr Prakash said.
The University also undertook
to enroll you in our Bachelors
programmes in the English language
and Business Communication. If you
are willing to go ahead and you have
met the requirements at the end of your
studies- that offer still stays.
The broad objective of the programme,
Mr Prakash added, was to help prepare
foreign students for the global market,
in terms of employment in different
countries with reasonably good levels
of competency of spoken and written
English.
From what I gather from the staff and
through interactions with your agents
is that some of the graduates of the
past batch (stage one) are already back
home enjoying reasonably good jobs.
Quite a number of them also have
gone abroad to places like Australia,
New Zealand, Canada, and USA, and
are pursuing different types of jobs
they have found in all these different
countries. We sincerely hope that
all of you will have a similar fate
waiting and have interesting offers
and opportunities waiting for you
elsewhere in the world or perhaps Fiji
as well where you are most welcome to
stay back and work, do attachments or
to study further.
Mr Prakash said the programme has
been a success since the objectives in
the MOA were being achieved even in
the middle of the agreement.
Sun Yong Park alias Olivia Park, who
was awarded the Dux Award, said she
and her friends had overcome their fear
of conversing in the English language
after completing this programme.
During the past six months, we have
accomplished and learned many things.
I am inspired and surprised by my
friends who were afraid of speaking
English, but look at them now. They
speak fuently without any fear. In the
future we should try hard to utilize the
learning that the FNU has given us in
order to achieve the goals we have.
Court Denies Urai's Overseas Travel Request
Fiji Trades Union Congress president
Daniel Urais request to change bail
conditions to allow him to travel for
a conference in the United Kingdom
was rejected by the Suva Magistrates
Court.
Magistrate Thushara Rajasinghe told
Urai he was not the only person in the
union and someone else should have
been nominated.
He told Urai that he is charged with a
serious offence and he did not inform
the court if he was the only authorised
person who can travel to the conference.
However the court has suspended his
curfew hours but he will have to notify
the Director of Public Prosecution
offce if he intends to travel to Fiji's
outer islands.
Urai is charged with urging political
violence and inciting antagonism
against the Bainimarama government.
His case has been adjourned to May
17.
Anyone Can Contest 2014 Elections
Says Fiji PM
Fijis Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe
Bainimarama has declared that anyone
can stand for the general elections in 2014.
Bainimarama confrmed this to the
reporter Graham Davis in an interview
which was aired on television.
When asked if former Prime Minister
Laisenia Qarase will be allowed to contest,
Bainimarama responded: Anyone is able
to stand, even Laisenia Qarase.
He reiterated that the 2014 elections
will be free from bias and no-one will
be allowed to stand on behalf of any
one race in Fiji.
Itll be equal suffrage, one man, one
vote. That is defnite, that everyone
has accepted that. And that is the way
were going to go.
Meanwhile, Bainimarama is expected
to announce the process of public
consultations for the formation of the
new constitution later this week.

Keeping the Coral Coast Green
Sigatoka town became the frst town in
the country to become part of the No
Plastic -Thats Fantastic campaign.
Launched at the Coral Coast by the
Minister for Local Government,
Urban Development, Housing and
Environment, Mr Samuela Saumatua,
the campaign will see Sigatoka become
the frst town to ban plastics and set a
benchmark for other towns and cities.
I have decided to launch on a national
scale by the Ministry and this initiative
will also be followed in other councils,
Col Saumatua said.
Plastics are a threat to our environment
and our very existence. Being a non
biodegradable substance, composed of
toxic chemicals, plastic pollutes the earth,
air and water. A single plastic bag can take
up to 1000 years to decay completely.
Chairman of Coral Coast Hoteliers
Association and the General Manager
of Outrigger on the Lagoon, Mr Peter
Hopgood said at Outrigger on the
Lagoon, they will be issuing guests
with shopping bags when they check-
in to resort.
The General Manager of Coral Coast
Resort, Mr Peter Hopgood said the
Sigatoka town council will issue an
edict to all retailers in Sigatoka to stop
the use of plastic bags and have the
retailers encourage shoppers to bring
their shopping bags with them.
We will further undertake an education
process in all our schools to ensure that
our future generations fully understand
how important it is to keep our
environment clean, Mr Hopgood said.
The Coral Coast Hotel Association will
also be conducting poster competitions
in all schools in the province.

Tourism Road Show Enhances
Fijian-Indian Partnership
The tourism road show through India
led by Fijian Attorney-General Aiyaz
Sayed-Khaiyum to promote the
tourism relationship between Fiji and
India came to an end.
Whilst still in its early days, turn
out for the road show was excellent,
and destination awareness of Fiji has
certainly grown as we look forward to
penetrating the Indian market further,
shared Sayed-Khaiyum.
Tourism Fijis representatives in
India, Global Destinations, organized
an exceptional event, and will continue
to follow with promotional activities
throughout the year, creating greater
consumer awareness of Fiji as a travel
destination.
The road shows last stop was in the
city of Mumbai, and enthusiasm for
the event rivaled the spirited support of
Fijians in Bangalore earlier in the week.
Competing with a public holiday, the
road show workshop still attracted over
125 tourism agents, which underlines
the strength and sustained growth of
the tourism industry in the Asia-Pacifc
region.
On the heels of the announced 47%
tax rebate offered by the Fijian
Government to flm productions in Fiji,
Attorney-General Sayed-Khaiyum
used the road show as an opportunity
to meet with Bollywood producers,
welcoming them to Fiji and enhancing
the international relationship in sectors
beyond tourism.
Josephine Smith-Moffat, Tourism Fiji
board member, has been intimately
involved in the evolving marketing
endeavors to promote internal
engagement of Fijian entities, as well
as customized outreach to ensure
guests from new markets experience
Fijis world-class hospitality.
Smith-Moffat contributed, The
success of Tourism Fijis activities
depends heavily on our partnerships
with inbound operators and Tourism
products. It is through our world-class
hospitality and destination awareness
programmes that we will continue to
build on Fijis 2011 growth in emerging
tourism markets.

Rolls-Royces Trent 700 Engine To Power Air Pacs New Airbuses
The agreement between Fijis national
carrier, Air Pacifc and Rolls Royces
Trent 700 engines to power three new
Airbus A330-200 aircraft is signifcant
of Fiji traversing new grounds.
Attorney General and Minster for Civil
Aviation Mr Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum
shared that with guests at the offcial
announcement of this agreement with
Rolls-Royce, valued at $370 million.
Mr Khaiyum said this achievement
would put Fijis tourism industry in a
different position in the Pacifc region.
The Rolls-Royce engine is
environmentally friendly. It fts in with
our image as a tourist destination as we
offer pristine environment. It also fts in
with our image and indeed our agenda to
ensure that we in the South Pacifc or the
Pacifc region itself are conscious of our
role and our output as far as tourism is
concerned and the impact of that on the
environment, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said this new
agreement also creates an effcient
business environment where cost
factors play an important role.
The effciency of saving fuel means
that Air Pacifc will have a better
margin. The knowledge transfer is
also very important. Air Pacifc has
managed to, in doing all of these new
deals; get all the necessary input from
overseas knowledge and personnel and
input into transferring the knowledge
that they have to the locals. And I think
this is very critical to understand and
appreciate. They can then become
part of the international and the global
employment sector where they are able
to transfer their skills to the other parts
of the world.
The Attorney-General added that with
the new airbuses, Air Pacifc would get
opportunities to increase operations
and look at new destinations.
With the Airbus coming on stream
with Rolls-Royce engine, it helps
Fiji position itself as a major hub of
the South Pacifc. The Airbus offers
us opportunities to increase our
operations in Air Pacifc and even
the margins would be a lot better. It
helps us to look at new destinations. It
also helps us to position ourselves by
offering to the travelling public that
they should come to Fiji because we
offer world class fight to come to Fiji
and from Fiji, they can go to the rest of
the Pacifc and indeed to Australia and
New Zealand. These are some of the
new opportunities that are knocking
on our doorstep and we need to partner
with each other to take this on board,
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.
He also acknowledged the Fiji National
Provident Funds confdence in Air Pacifc
and for providing part of the fnancing for
the purchase of the three Airbuses.
The frst of the Airbus A330-200
arrives into the country in 2013, while
the remaining two would arrive before
the end 2013.

Christopher Pryde Slams UK Criticism Of Judiciary
Fijis Director of Public Prosecutions
Christopher Pryde has slammed the
chairman of "an obscure British NGO",
Law Society Charity for making racist
allegations against the DPP's Offce.
Pride said the report, which Nigel Dodds
did not provide to the Fiji government,
was made following a private visit
to Fiji by Dodds in November, 2011
during which he claims to have
interviewed many attorneys, judges
and opposition politicians.
Pryde said Dodds also seemed to have
a problem with Sri Lankan lawyers
joining Fijis judiciary.
He said the DPPs offce is independent
and non-political in its decision making.
Mr Dodds spent approximately four
days in Fiji and four months later, he
is making an attempt to draw publicity
for himself and his group as a supposed
expert on Fijis judicial system, said
Pryde in a government statement.
Pryde said Dodds never contacted the
DPP or any other government offcial
for his report.
The failure to solicit any opinion from
people actively engaged with the Fijian
legal system strongly suggests that Mr
Dodds and his organisation are either
being used by certain disgruntled people
in Fiji to promote a political agenda or
are being deliberately obtuse."

Collective Approach Needed For Regional Aviation
The Attorney General and Minister
for Civil Aviation Mr Aiyaz Sayed
Khaiyum called on the regional
aviation industry to work together to
deal with challenges facing the Pacifc.
The Minister made the comments while
addressing the delegates at the Informal
South Pacifc Air Traffc Services Co-
coordinating Group (ISPACG) in Nadi.
It is defnitely critical for island countries
to work together to tackle challenges and
affecting the industry, he said.
We have very small economies of
scale and it is therefore imperative
to collaborate to move forward in
partnership with bigger countries and
vendors to be economically effcient.
Hosts, Airports Fiji Limited chief
executive offcer, Tony Gollin said
the purpose of the meeting is to
look at ways of improving air traffc
management system and better
coordination between the countries.
An integrated and coordinated
approach to the monitoring and
surveillance of the Pacifcs upper air
space is very critical, Gollin said.
We need to share resources with
each other and also work very closely
to have a more effcient service with
modern technology.
The week long meeting saw the
participation of aviation representatives
from Japan, Australia, New Zealand,
Tahiti, Vanuatu, Cook Islands, Fiji,
USA and Chile.

Rule Of Law Lost In Fiji, Undercover
Mission Finds
A secret fact-fnding mission to Fiji
has found citizens have no legal way of
challenging any of the Government's
decisions, and the rule of law and
independence of the judiciary has all
but vanished.
A return to the rule of law is hamstrung
by the benefts members of the ruling
regime enjoy, and by state-sanctioned
intimidation of dissenters.
In November members of the Law
Society of England and Wales visited
Fiji on an undercover mission and
interviewed past and present lawyers,
judges, diplomats and people in non-
government organisations.
Their report Fiji: The Rule of Law Lost
found a system of governing that was
not "transparent, certain, predictable,
accountable or democratic".
Foreign Minister Murray McCully said
the report was "not very encouraging"
but pointed to steps Fiji was taking
towards holding elections.
These included a commitment to a
public consultation process and a voter
registration programme.
"This is a pivotal point in time," he
said. "The acid test in the eyes of the
international community would be
what steps take place now, both in
terms of freedom of assembly and
media freedom, but also in terms of
the public consultation process and
whether it will engage all stakeholders.
Mr McCully said the jury was out and
he wanted to keep an open mind.
Fiji has been under military rule since
2006, when Frank Bainimarama seized
power. He has promised elections in
2014.
The report found that judges and
prosecutors had been fred without
reason, the state had censored the
media and the regime abused its power
to intimidate its critics.
"The judges dismissed in April 2009
were given no reasons, no notice and
no compensation for loss of offce,"
the report said. "It is apparent that their
sin was to comply with their oath of
offce and to act independently rather
than any misconduct. It is diffcult to
conceive of a more obvious attack on
judicial independence."
Many of the state's prosecutors were
also replaced with lawyers from Sri
Lanka on short-term contracts, the
report said.
The report called all national law
societies and bars to lobby governments
to press for measures to be taken by the
Fiji Government to ensure a return to
the rule of law.
Labour's foreign affairs spokesman
Phil Goff said the report was damning,
but he did not think harsher sanctions
on Fiji were the answer.
Economic sanctions hurt ordinary
people without necessarily having the
desired impact on the regime.
INTIMIDATION
* Dorsami Naidu, president of the Fiji
Law Society and vocal critic of the
Government, was detained by police
for 24 hours after protesting peacefully
outside a High Court building.
* Hemendra Nagin, a lawyer who led
a petition against the forcible removal
of the Chief Justice in 2007, was fned
$15,000 for professional misconduct.
* Human rights lawyer Imrana Jalal
was charged under a decree that did not
come into force until two months after
she was charged. She was eventually
acquitted, but lives in exile.
* Graffti artists have been charged
with sedition.

$59 Million For Nausori Airport
Upgrade
Work is expected to begin this year
on the redevelopment of Nausori
International Airport at a cost of nearly
$60 million, according to Mr Tony
Gollin, CEO of AFL.
Mr Gollin said that the upgrade was
long overdue and would address issues
that continue to adversely affect the
airports operations. Work, he said,
would progress in three stages. It is
scheduled to be completed over a ten
year time period.
He credited the Prime Minister
Voreqe Bainimarama with providing
the support that has moved the
redevelopment forward.
We are aware of the importance he has
placed on the continued development
of the Eastern Division and how much
the expanded airport will work towards
this end, Mr Gollin said.
Mr Gollin said that background
planning for the stage one work is well
underway and mobilization on site is
expected to begin in December, once,
and subject to, the necessary planning
approvals and land acquisition having
occurred. The stage one work will take
a year to complete and will involve
improving the operational safety of
the current runway at the airport.
This will entail widening the runway,
strengthening the adjacent grass
runway strip, building internationally
required runway end safety areas, and
installing approach lighting to allow
for night-time operations.
Currently, the Civil Aviation Authority
of Fiji (CAAF), which is Fijis aviation
regulator ensuring that the country is
adhering to its international civil aviation
obligations, has placed restrictions on
the use of the airports runway that
includes a ban on night fying until the
improvements are in place.
A concern also is the state of the
present terminal. Short term measures
are being taken to improve the current
facility, but in stage two a new
international terminal is to be built on a
site where the hangars are now located.
This will provide much improved
passenger services, Mr Gollin said.
The present terminal will then be
refurbished for domestic commercial
use and private jets.
Additionally, the apron, where aircraft
load and unload their passengers, as well
as parking positions for international
aircraft, will be substantially enlarged
and positioned adjacent to the new
terminal. Stage two will also include
the construction of a new control
tower, said Mr Gollin.
An extension to the runway from
its present 1,868 metres to 2,300
metres that will be long enough to
accommodate larger aircraft such as the
Boeing 767 and Air Pacifcs proposed
Airbus A330 aircraft is scheduled in
stage three of the development.
Mr Gollin said that with the completion
of the three stages, Nausori Airport will
provide a safe, reliable and passenger
friendly aviation operation until to at
least 2040 and beyond.

Police Charge PNG Chief Justice
Papua New Guinea's Chief Justice,
Sir Salamo Injia, appeared in court
after being charged with trying to
obstruct a police investigation into his
management of funds.
Sir Salamo was arrested in Port
Moresby on Tuesday and being taken
into police custody.
Police spokesman Superintendent
Dominic Kakas says Sir Salamo
has been charged with obstructing a
police investigation into his alleged
intervention in the handling of a dead
judge's estate.
Police allege the chief justice illegally
redirected into court coffers K213, 000
(US$100, 000) meant for the son of the
late Justice Timothy Hinchliffe.
In 2009 the complaint was made,
Kakas said.
We allege Sir Salamo Injia intervened
and ordered the cheque be recalled and
had a new cheque made to the court's
staff services.
A silent Sir Salamo would not respond
to questions from journalists as he was
led from police headquarters to Boroko
jail cells, where he was formally
charged.
He was immediately released on his
own recognizance, a type of bail in
which no money is paid.
The Queensland Bar Association
has registered concern at the arrest,
warning it has the potential to set an
uncomfortable precedent.
What needs to be established is
that the arrest was the result of an
independent police investigation and
not the result of higher-level executive
government interference, president of
the association Roger Traves SC said
in a statement.
The executive must respect the
judiciary, decisions of the court and the
rule of law. To do otherwise is to reject
the due performance by the court of its
constitutional obligations, and hence to
reject the constitution.
At a press conference in Port Moresby
on Tuesday, Prime Minister Peter
O'Neill said he was not aware of the
arrest and was expecting a briefng
from Internal Security Minister John
Boito.
I have no detail on that, O'Neill told
reporters.
Boito was seen at police headquarters
on Tuesday morning, before a convoy
of police vehicles escorted Sir Salamo
to Boroko to be charged.
In December, Sir Salamo presided
over the Supreme Court decision
that found Prime Minister O'Neill
and his supporters did not follow
due constitutional process when they
dumped former Prime Minister Sir
Michael Somare from the top job.
The government made numerous
attempts to remove him from the case,
citing a confict of interest.
In February, O'Neill suspended Sir
Salamo from active duty, pending an
investigation by a tribunal of former
judges into his handling of court funds.
An attempt in November to suspend
him on the same charges landed
Deputy Prime Minister Belden Namah
and Attorney-General Dr Allan Marat
briefy in jail.

Samoa Government Considers
Deporting Convicted Thief
The Samoa government is considering
deporting the manager of Singapore
Motors, a Pakistani man found guilty of
more than 20 counts of theft in January.
Arshed Fareed is due to be sentenced
on the 12th of this month, but Prime
Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi
says he has been advised the defendant
be deported.
Tuilaepa says this would save public
funds if the man is sentenced to jail
The governments move comes after
a Nigerian man was deported last
year after successfully suing the
governments immigration and the
Ministry of Police.
William Okoro was rewarded
compensation of more than US50,000
dollars but that does not include the
cost of his deportation, which was also
covered by the public purse.
The prime minister says the government
does not want a repeat of this case for
which public funds had been wasted
because of police carelessness in the
performance of their duties.
Court Of Appeal To Sit April 16-20

Nz Volcano Project To Help Vanuatu
Helping reduce the risk to communities
from volcanic eruptions in Vanuatu is
one of the goals of a fve-year New
Zealand-funded project launched this
week.
The $500,000 (US$407,000) scientifc
programme will see three Vanuatu
volcanoes being closely monitored to pick
up early signs of unrest and allow time to
put emergency procedures in place.
New monitoring equipment will be
installed on volcanoes Tanna, Ambae,
and Gaua island and will send data
back to scientists in Port Vila allowing
warnings to be sent to the islands if
volcanic activity changes.
As part of the NZ Aid Programme-
funded scheme communities on the
island will also be educated on how
best to respond to an eruption.
Purchase Of Dialysis Machine Too Costly
For Tongans
Kidney patients who need essential
dialysis in Tonga will have to go abroad
for treatment
The Ministry of Health says it doesn't
have the budget to assist patients who
require essential dialysis treatment.
Radio & TV Tonga reports that 200
people in the Kingdom have chronic
kidney failure and have to travel to New
Zealand or elsewhere to be treated.
They have to pay for the treatment
themselves, or a portion of it.
If they get treatment patients can live
for another 15 to 20 years. But by
staying in Tonga and getting no access
to dialysis they're likely to die earlier.
The Ministry of Health says it's trying
to fnd solutions to the problem through
consultation exercises, but admits
money is an obstacle.
One dialysis machine alone costs up to
TOP$ 4 million.

More Kiwis Ditching NZ For
Australia
The NZ Labour Party and the Greens are blaming the NZ government for the
record number of Kiwis leaving to look for a better life and higher wages in
Australia.
Latest statistics show 4700 more New
Zealanders left for Australia than
arrived in January, taking the annual
trans-Tasman loss to a record 38,100.
Labour's economic development
spokesman, David Cunliffe, says the
trend was predictable.
"While National drives down wages
and puts more people on the dole,
Australia is offering secure jobs that
pay well," he said.
"For many, moving is a no-brainer."
Mr Cunliffe says 119,000 people have
left New Zealand since National came
to power in late 2008.
"That's more people than the city of
Dunedin, and far more brains than the
country can afford to lose."
Green Party co-leader Russel Norman
says the government has failed to
promote a vision for New Zealand that
inspires people to stay.
"People need to be confdent their
government has an economic strategy
for creating good jobs and a vision for
a clean, green New Zealand," he said.
"National has failed to provide that
strategy or vision - instead they're
fogging off assets and land to pay the
bills."
The Statistics NZ fgures show the net
outfow of migrants was 3134 in the
year ended January 31, the highest net
loss since August 2001.
"Net losses have been recorded in 10 of
the 11 months since the February 2011
earthquake in Christchurch," Statistics
NZ said.
NZ Boy, Eight, Takes Car On Joyride
A car driving erratically in central
Wellington had a pajama-clad eight-
year-old boy behind the wheel, rather
than a drunk.
A TV reporter for New Zealand's One
News following the car watched it
swerve over the road and clip a parked
car before pulling into a hotel car park
just before 5am (3pm AEDT).
The reporter blocked the car in but
instead of confronting a drunk, a
teary child wearing Ben 10 pajamas
emerged.
The boy, who was just been able to
reach the car's pedals, said he did not
want to be at home and had taken his
parents' keys.
His parents had already been in contact
with police after the boy went missing
from home.
One-Third Of Kiwis Would Not
Recommend Their Bank
One-third of New Zealand's banking
customers would not recommend their
bank to family and friends, according
to a study released today by Gallup
Consulting.
Gallup Consulting said only 23 per
cent of customers were "fully engaged''
with their banks, while one in fve
customers were actively disengaged.
The study also found that 88 per cent
of people did not feel any of the bank
brands stood out from rest, while 34
per cent would not recommend their
bank to family and friends.
Of the major banks, Kiwibank rated
best in terms of service and competitive
offers, while ASB was seen as the
friendliest and most innovative.
Other brands surveyed in the study
included National Bank, ANZ, BNZ
and Westpac, which were fairly close
together.
"The study reveals many customers
feel banks have become stale and
rudimentary, providing standard
levels of customer service but not
going the 'extra mile' to connect with
customers and thereby create stronger
brand advocacy,'' Robyn Hart, a senior
consultant at Gallup Consulting said in
a statement.
She said many people surveyed saw
banks as a "necessary evil'' and felt
disgruntled and dissatisfed with their
experiences.
"The results are worrying and show that
banks are struggling to differentiate
themselves from each other,'' she said.
"They appear to be simply 'going
through the motions' when it comes
to looking after their customers, rather
than looking to offer something that
creates engagement and loyalty.''
The study involved 2584 customer
interviews - averaging around 450
interviews per bank, with the exception
of KiwiBank, for which 325 interviews
were conducted.
Hart, who moved to Gallup two years
ago from ASB after 16 years as the
bank's "engagement leader'' said banks
had become obsessed with the base-line
customer satisfaction measurement.
She told APNZ in an interview that the
banks had "lulled themselves into a
false sense of security'' by focusing on
customer satisfaction surveys, which
generally tended not to differ too much.
"However, when you go a bit deeper
into the 'engagement space' - that's
when we see that there is a bit of a
difference,'' she told APNZ.
Some of the drivers of "engagement''
were whether customers felt they
were valued, whether their bank made
it easier for them to do business and
whether they felt their banks were
handling their problems well.
Gallup Consulting's studies, both in
New Zealand and overseas, found that
banks needed to uncover what was
important to customers and to engage
with them.
Hart said there was a direct correlation
between customer engagement and
operational performance for business.
The higher the customer engagement
level, the greater the chance of
increased revenue through enhanced
loyalty, reduced "churn'' and improved
market share.
Hart said Gallup Consulting based its
measurements of customer engagement
on elements of confdence, integrity
and pride.
"The global research we have conducted
at Gallup over several decades shows
customers who feel these emotions, or
who are engaged, are more likely to
recommend a business to others and
much less likely to switch. Emotions
drive consumer behaviour,'' she said.
Australia's so called big four banks
account for about 90 per cent of the
New Zealand market.
A spokesman for ANZ - the biggest in
the local market - said one in two New
Zealanders had a fnancial relationship
with ANZ or one of its brands. "We
don't take that for granted,'' he said.

Terrorism Threatens No-Visa Deal
The visa-waiver agreement with
South Africa is to be reviewed amid
suggestions that terrorists and criminals
are travelling on fraudulently obtained
passports from the republic.
A Cabinet paper recommends
Immigration Minister Nathan Guy and
Associate Minister Kate Wilkinson
review the arrangement by the end of
the year.
"There are concerns about the fraudulent
use of South African passports by
non-South African nationals and the
availability of fraudulently issued
legitimate South African passports,"
Mr Guy said.
"While Immigration New Zealand
has been very successful in managing
these risks to date, it is appropriate
to reassess the current visa-waiver
arrangement ... to determine whether a
change is warranted."
In the 12 months to February, 72 people
have been prevented from travelling
to or entering New Zealand with
what were thought to be fraudulently
obtained South African passports.
In the past fve years, 5057 foreign
nationals were refused entry at the
border - 3262 were believed to have
non-genuine reasons for travelling and
448 were seen as "likely to commit a
crime in New Zealand".
However, an Immigration NZ
spokesman said there was no breakdown
of how many were travelling on South
African passports.
Britain also stopped allowing South
African passport holders to enter
without a visa three years ago, saying
South Africa "fell short of the required
standard" of passport security.
Anneli Botha, senior terrorism
researcher at the International Crime
in Africa Programme, says South
Africans can use their driver's licence,
identity book or a birth certifcate to
apply for a passport, and fake South
African birth certifcates can be bought
easily on the black market.
In an article for the Institute for
Security Studies, she lists a number of
al-Qaeda-linked terrorists caught with
South African passports, including
two alleged to be part of a 2006 plot to
blow up airliners.
Meat Workers Locked Out Of Plant
Locked out meat workers protest outside
the Affco meat works at Rangiuru, near
Te Puke in the Bay of Plenty.
More than 200 Bay of Plenty meat
workers have been locked out of Affco's
Rangiuru plant, in the latest action
following a breakdown in negotiations
for a collective agreement.
Last week 750 meat workers were
indefnitely locked out of the Moerewa,
Horotiu, Feilding, Wanganui and
Wairoa plants.
About 700 union members were not
locked out, but on Friday they staged
a 24-hour strike in solidarity for those
who were locked out.
Then from 5am Tuesday another
213 workers were locked out of the
previously unaffected Rangiuru plant
in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand
Meat Workers Union national secretary
Dave Eastlake said.
The 700 unaffected union members
were again striking for 24 hours .

Accused Killer Admits Murdering
His Wife
An alleged murderer has pleaded guilty
to murdering his wife in front of 300
people, ending his trial in the midst of
his own defence evidence.
Just after 4pm, a Supreme Court jury
was told that Zialloh Abrahimzadeh,
57, wanted to enter his plea again,
having been cross-examined all
morning by prosecutors.
He then pleaded guilty to murdering
his wife, Zahra, in front of 300 people
at the Adelaide Convention Centre in
March 2010.
He wiped his eyes as he told a Supreme
Court jury he loved Zahra "very much".
"We had lived together for twenty-
something years and I loved her - if
she didn't love me, that was a different
matter," he said.
"I loved her very much... at the time we
married, I gave her 125 gold coins.
"If she wanted to divorce me I had no
problem, provided we sit down and
sort out fnances frst."
Abrahimzadeh previously has admitted
stabbing Zahra to death but pleaded
not guilty to murder, claiming he was
hallucinating when he inficted eight
wounds with a knife hidden in his jacket.
Last week, he told jurors he saw
"dark, ugly men" hurting the couple's
youngest child, Anita, and believed he
was defending her.
Prosecutors have alleged
Abrahimzadeh's crime was a "fnal
act of control" prompted by Zahra's
decision to divorce him after years of
domestic violence.
The couple's daughters have given
evidence they were abused as well.
Abrahimzadeh has denied abusing
Zahra and claimed he used only "mild
force" to discipline the girls.
In cross-examination, prosecutor Sandi
McDonald accused Abrahimzadeh of
"despising" his late wife.
She said he hated her for spreading
rumours and shaming him, and had
fought with her over their house in Iran.
Abrahimzadeh said that was not the case.
"No, I loved her, and all of those other
(factors) put a lot of pressure on my
mental state," he said.
"I was trying to tell her we should be
involved equally in our children's lives,
but she was trying to take away Anita
and have her 100 per cent of the time."
Justice John Sulan discharged the
jury and remanded Abrahimzadeh in
custody for sentencing.
Shirley Singh 'Argued With
Husband's Lover'
Shirley Singh denied that accused murderer Max Sica spent the night
with her family at a Gold Coast hotel.
THE Singh siblings murder trial has
heard of a heated argument between
their mother and their father's married
lover outside a pizza shop in Fiji.
Shirley Singh told the Supreme Court
in Brisbane that she went to Fiji to
confrm her husband, Vijay Singh, was
having an affair with a woman named
Karun Singh, as reported.
She was being cross-examined on the
14th day of a trial in which Max Sica,
41, has pleaded not guilty to murdering
Neelma Singh, 24, Kunal Singh, 18, and
Sidhi Singh, 12, at Bridgeman Downs,
in Brisbane's north, on April 21, 2003.
Shirley Singh frst learned of the affair on
a Gold Coast holiday when a friend told
her that Vijay had a girlfriend in Fiji.
At frst she was "too numb" but she
then confronted Vijay and he said go
and fnd out for herself.
"Any woman will tell you, they will say
to their husband you go to nightclubs,
look at your age, you are 50 years old,"
Shirley Singh said.
She agreed with barrister Sam Di
Carlo, for Sica, that Sica had driven her
and Neelma to the airport to go to Fiji.
"He (Sica) was pretty anxious for me
to go and fle for a divorce and grab
everything," she added.
Mr Di Carlo put it to Shirley Singh that
she was adding to her answers to make
Sica look bad.
"I don't agree with that," she replied.
Shirley Singh went on to describe how
she and Neelma confronted Karun
outside Karun's workplace at Wedges
- a chips and pizza shop.
She said there had been argument and
Karun used rude words before she left.
Shirley Singh said she later visited
Karun's husband and boys who treated
her very well and she got impression
the affair wasn't the frst.
She also had met with Karun at a police
station.
Shirley Singh confrmed while in
Fiji she received a phone call from
someone who said they were in love
with Karun and Vijay Singh had come
into the picture.
There had been another call in which
Shirley Singh was warned to stay away
from Karun.
In late October 2002, some Fijian men
came to her Fiji house and she believed
Karun must have known where her
house was because she had been
sleeping there with Vijay.
Shirley Singh said she had not been
afraid of the men and had been able to
pacify them.
When she returned to Australia in
November 2002, Sica had rung her.
Mr Di Carlo asked if Sica had rung to
see if she was okay and to tell her that
she should get a divorce because of the
affairs.
"It was none of his business," Shirley
Singh recalled.
Later in January 2003, when Vijay broke
up with Karun she was aware that Karun
had threatened to commit suicide.
"I got worried. I was a mother and had
children and she was a mother and had
children. I rang her. I told her 'no man
is worth your life'," Shirley Singh said.
She said Vijay told her the affair with
Karun was over because Karun was
getting very possessive.
"It was typical Vijay, they never lasted
more than three or so months," Shirley
Singh said.
Earlier, Mr Di Carlo asked Shirley
Singh about a holiday on the Gold
Coast where she had argued with Vijay
who had left.
She recalled Sica had been at the Gold
Coast casino and Neelma seemed to be
trying to avoid him.
Mr Di Carlo asked if she knew Neelma
had asked Sica to come to the casino
but Shirley Singh said she didn't know.
She also denied Sica had spent that
night with the family at the hotel.
The trial, before Justice John Byrne,
continues.
20,000 DVDs Seized In
Piracy Raids
POLICE have seized 20,000 DVDs and charged two men in separate
raids on Melbourne market stalls that were allegedly selling pirated
movies and TV series.
Offcers confscated about 16,500
discs, 11 portable hard drives and
several laptop computers loaded with
copyright-infringing media from fve
stalls at a market in Bundoora, in
Melbourne's north.
A 33-year-old man from the eastern
suburb of Box Hill was charged with
copyright and proceeds of crime
offences, the Australian Federation
Against Copyright Theft said.
Police also seized about 3500 illegal
discs from a stall at the Braybrook
markets in Melbourne's west.
A 29-year-old man was charged, the
federation said.
The copyright watchdog said illegal
DVD sellers were ripping off legitimate
business owners and the entertainment
industry, and needed to be rubbed out.

Mexican Tops Gates On List Of
Richest Billionaires
Carlos Slim, the telecommunications
tycoon who controls Mexico's
America Movil, is the richest person
on Earth, according to the Bloomberg
Billionaires Index, a daily ranking of
the world's 20 wealthiest individuals.
The 72-year-old's net worth fell
US$478.4 million ($577.7 million) in
a day to US$68.5 billion as of the close
of markets on Friday, as US moguls
Bill Gates and Warren Buffett placed
second and third on the list compiled
by Bloomberg News.
Brazil's Eike Batista, who ranks 10th
on the list, still covets the top spot after
vowing a year ago that he'd become the
world's wealthiest man by 2015.
"I'm competitive," Batista, who trails
Slim by almost US$39 billion, said
in a March 2 telephone interview
from Rio de Janeiro. "It's Brazil's
time to be No 1. Brazilians have
always admired the American dream.
What's happening in Brazil is the
Brazilian dream and I happen to be the
example." The Bloomberg Billionaires
Index is updated every business day at
5.30pm in New York. Slim's fortune
has increased 11 per cent this year,
according to the index.
Gates, 56, co-founder of Microsoft
in Redmond, Washington, is worth
US$62.4 billion, up 11 per cent year to
date.
The fortune of Buffett, 81, chairman
of Omaha, Nebraska-based Berkshire
Hathaway, declined US$336.9 million
to US$43.8 billion on March 2 and is
up 2.4 per cent in 2012. Almost all of
Buffett's wealth is held in Berkshire
Hathaway, the company he has run
since 1965.
The combined net worth of the 20
richest people is US$676.8 billion.
Nine are Americans, including three
from the family of Sam Walton, the
founder of Wal-Mart Stores.
Number seven is Larry Ellison, 67,
chief executive of Oracle, the world's
third-largest software maker after
Microsoft and SAP. His US$38 billion
fortune puts him US$4 billion ahead
of brothers Charles and David Koch,
who each own 42 per cent of Koch
Industries.
Batista, 55, whose investments range
from iron ore to coal, is worth US$29.8
billion, up US$133.9 million on March
2. His fortune has grown 32 per cent
this year, the most on the list. Sheldon
Adelson, the casino magnate who
owns 47 per cent of Las Vegas Sands,
is number 13 with US$25.7 billion.
Adelson, 78, and his family have
pledged at least US$10 million to a
super-PAC supporting Newt Gingrich,
a Republican presidential candidate.
Liliane Bettencourt, 89, who with her
family owns 31 per cent of Paris-based
cosmetics company L'Oreal, is last on
the ranking with US$22.4 billion.
On the rise is Gina Rinehart, the
Australian mining heiress who is worth
US$20.4 billion. Rinehart, 58, the
daughter of the man who discovered the
mines that made Australia the worlds
biggest iron ore exporter, inherited
perpetual royalty rights to some of Rio
Tinto's Hamersley mines in addition
to other thermal and iron-ore deposits
throughout the country.
In separate deals in the past year,
steelmakers Posco and GVK Power
agreed to pay a combined US$2.9
billion for pieces of Rinehart's empire.
Mark Zuckerberg, the 27-year-old
founder of Facebook, didn't make the
cut. Based on a roughly US$100 billion
valuation the company has been trading
at in the private market, Zuckerberg's
stake may be worth US$21 billion, or
about 25 per cent less than previous
estimates, once Facebook holds its
initial public offering.
The reason: Facebook will issue
more than 500 million shares of its
Class B stock at the offering, diluting
Zuckerberg's ownership to 21 per cent.

Man Dies In Buried Alive Record
Attempt
A Sri Lankan man has died while trying to set a record for the
longest time spent buried alive.
Police said Janaka Basnayake, 24,
buried himself over the weekend with
the help of family and friends in a
trench sealed with wood and soil in the
town of Kantale, about 220km north of
Sri Lanka's capital, Colombo. A local
newspaper reported that the trench was
three metres deep.
Basnayake was buried about 9.30am
on Saturday. Police said when he was
brought to the surface at 4pm; he
was unconscious and was taken to a
hospital, where he was pronounced
dead on arrival.
Dr D G Costa of the Kantale hospital
said a post-mortem examination could
not determine the cause of death and
further medical investigations are
being conducted.
Basnayake's mother, L D Leelawathi,
said her son had enjoyed performing
unusual acts since his childhood - a
liking that grew after watching movies,
the newspaper reported.
It quoted her as saying that her son
had been buried alive on two previous
occasions - for two and a half hours
and six hours respectively.
It was unclear whether there is an
offcial world record for the longest
time buried alive.
Police said Basnayake was a member of
the Civil Defence Force, a police unit that
fought in the country's 25-year civil war.

Condoms Now Compulsory For
LA Porn Actors
Actors in many of the adult flms made
in America's porn capital must use
condoms under a law that took effect
on Monday, but the prophylactic police
aren't yet on the beat.
How they will enforce such a regulation
once they do begin enforcement is
anyone's guess.
In Los Angeles, where an estimated
90 percent of the country's porn flms
are made, city offcials and industry
leaders are trying to settle on a way to
ensure that there's more safe sex on the
set. Some say health care professionals
should be present during a shoot to
make sure actors use condoms.
"Today really is a milestone in the
advance of health and safety for these
adult flmmakers,'' said Ged Kenslea,
spokesman for the AIDS Healthcare
Foundation, which lobbied for years
for the measure.
When the City Council passed the
law in January, it gave police, the city
attorney, the porn industry and others
six months to recommend the best way
to enforce the measure. They have
roughly four months left.
Until then, it's unclear whether police
or health offcials will start showing
up at shoots. On Monday, city attorney
spokesman Frank Mateljan said he
didn't know the status of enforcement.
To shoot a flm, the law requires a
permit as well as the condom use. It
contains a loophole for some of the
larger porn companies, exempting the
condom requirement from flms made
on studio soundstages.
The question is whether smaller
companies, in which only a handful of
people show up at a house, usually in
the city's San Fernando Valley, quickly
make a movie in a day or two and then
move on, will pay any attention.
The head of one of the industry's
largest flmmakers said he hadn't been
approached about working out how the
ordinance would work and how the
city would deal with violators.
"We have not been approached,'' said
Steven Hirsch, chief executive and
co-founder of the Vivid Entertainment
Group. "We assumed we would be
approached but we have not been.''
Hirsch said about 90 percent of Vivid's
flm shoots are conducted either in its
own studio or outside the city.
But he quickly added that his company
would immediately begin complying
with the law and require that actors
use condoms on any flm shoots taking
place outside a studio in Los Angeles.
that there hasn't been a case of HIV
linked directly to the making of a porn
flm since 2004.
The cost of the inspections would be paid
out of fees the flmmakers would pay when
applying for permits. The foundation has
proposed a fee of $50 to $75.
Filmmakers who are caught violating
the requirement would be refused
future permits.
That law would require that a licensed
health care professional be on any porn
set to ensure condoms are being used and
that the flmmakers turn over an unedited
copy of their movie so authorities can see
if condoms were used.
"The primary purpose here is it's a
health and safety issue. And secondarily,
we don't want them here,'' Mayor
Bob Huber said of his city of 125,000
residents. "This is a family-oriented
community and we don't want them
setting up their studios in Simi Valley.''
London Couple Jailed For Life
For Murder Of Boy, 15, For
'Witchcraft'
A LONDON soccer coach and his fance were jailed for life for
the brutal murder of the woman's 15-year-old brother, who they
believed was a witch.
Eric Bikubi, 28 and his partner Magalie
Bamu, 29, subjected Bamu's brother
Kristy to four days of torture until he
drowned in their apartment in Manor
Park, east London, on Christmas Day
2010, after suffering 101 different
injuries.
The boy had travelled with his two
brothers and two sisters from Paris
to stay with Bikubi and Bamu, but
the couple turned on Kristy, who was
singled out after wetting his pants,
London's Old Bailey court heard.
They became convinced the boy was
possessed, and when the teenager
refused to admit to sorcery and
witchcraft he was tortured for days
with knives, sticks, metal bars, and a
hammer and chisel until he "begged to
die".
He drowned in the couple's bath during
a fnal ritual of "deliverance".
Kristy's sister was handed a minimum
25-year sentence, while her partner
Bikubi was sentenced to a minimum of
30 years.
The killers both hail from the
Democratic Republic of Congo where
belief in witchcraft, or "kindoki", is
particularly strong, and the practice
was the "driving force" behind the
murder, the jury in the trial heard.
An "armory of weapons" was found at
the couple's home, including several
knives, a metal bar, wooden poles,
and a pair of blood-stained pliers, a
hammer, a chisel, broken ceramic tiles
and a blood-stained mop.
Bikubi and Bamu, who denied murder,
were found guilty.
Alaska Girl Locked In Frigid
Bedroom US Hypothermia
A three-year-old girl from Alaska has died and her younger sister
suffered hypothermia after their mother and the mother's boyfriend
left them in a locked bedroom with an open window where the
temperature was minus 34 degrees Celsius.
The window was left open to air out the
room because the girls had wet their
beds.
The mother, 28-year-old elementary
school teacher Esther G Edwards-Gust,
and 29-year-old Richard Tilden Jr have
been indicted in the child's death.
Tilden was in custody.
The couple shared a home with
Edwards-Gust's one and three-year-
old daughters in the Inupiat Eskimo
community of Barrow.
Police say the two girls last month were
trapped overnight in their bedroom
with a window open to temperatures
that dropped to 34 degrees below zero.
Both children were diagnosed with
extreme hypothermia and fown to an
Anchorage hospital, where the three-
year-old died.
Tilden later told authorities he'd been
drinking the night before and opened
the bedroom window to air out the
room because the girls wet their beds,
according to court documents. He
also said the door's latch was broken,
making it impossible for anyone inside
the room to open it.
A grand jury on Friday indicted Tilden
and Esther G Edwards-Gust on charges
including manslaughter and criminally
negligent homicide. Tilden also faces
second-degree murder and assault
charges. He was arrested last month.
A warrant has been issued for Edwards-
Gust's arrest. Police didn't immediately
return a message last Saturday, and
a home listing for Barrow's police
chief was disconnected. A person who
answered the phone at the borough jail
said Edwards-Gust was not in custody
there. Tilden called the emergency
dispatcher when he discovered the
three-year-old was unresponsive and
not breathing on February 2.
Offcers said Tilden smelled of alcohol
when they were at the apartment, court
documents said.
Tilden later said he bought two bottles
of whiskey from a bootlegger and
began drinking the night before the
children were found in the bedroom
with the open window and broken
door latch, authorities said. Two empty
bottles were found in the apartment.
Tilden also told offcers he opened the
bedroom window because the girls wet
their beds, and he didn't close it before
going to bed. In earlier interviews,
Edwards-Gust told offcers the girls
were sleeping in their beds when she
went to work that morning.
UN Meets Millennium Development
Goal On Drinking Water
The Millennium Development Goal for
access to clean water has been reached,
ahead of the target date of 2015.
Now 89% of the population of the world
have access to improved water supplies,
up from 76% in the base year of 1990.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon
hailed the achievement of halving the
number of people without access to
improved drinking water.
He said it was thanks to people who
had seen it not as a dream, but a vital
step to improve health and well-being.
Improvement to clean water supplies
has not been even: 40% of those still
without access to improved drinking
water live in sub-Saharan Africa.
Worldwide, almost 800 million people
still drink dirty water. But in the past 20
years, two billion people have gained
access to improved drinking water.
While this was the frst signifcant
Millennium Development Goal (MDG)
to be reached, the charity Water Aid
says that the other part of the target, for
safe sanitation, is more off track than
any other MDG.
The biggest challenge for this target is
in India, where more than half of the
population, 626 million people, do not
have access to a toilet.
The other MDGs, including those on
reducing poverty and improving access
to education, are unlikely to be hit by
2015. The global economic downturn
and greater pressure from increased
population have pushed success even
further out of reach.

Indonesia To Ban Female MP Miniskirts
WOMEN'S groups have expressed
outrage after Indonesia's parliament
said it would draft rules banning female
politicians from wearing "provocative"
clothing such as miniskirts to work and
claimed such dress invited rape.
"We know there have been a lot of rape
cases and other immoral acts recently,
and this is because women aren't
wearing appropriate clothes," house of
representatives speaker Marzuki Alie
said.
"Women wearing inappropriate
clothes arouse men, so it needs to be
stopped. You know what men are like
- provocative clothing will make them
do things."
Refrizal, the deputy head of the
household affairs committee, which
is spearheading the new regulation,
told the reporter that "miniskirts and
skimpy clothes are an invitation to
male lawmakers".
The move was also backed by two
female house members who formerly
worked as fashion models, local media
reported.
Indonesian women's rights groups said
they were outraged by the comments
and called for a stop to the demonization
of rape victims.
"It's ridiculous that this is again coming
from the mouths of prominent people
with infuence," Action for Women
Against Rape founder Chicka Noya
said.
"We expect them to make regulations
to protect women from violence, not
condemn them for the way they dress."
The comments come just six months
after the Jakarta governor, Fauzi Foke
Bowo, made similar remarks, saying
that a spate of rape cases on the city's
public minibuses were triggered by
victims' miniskirts.
He urged Indonesian women to refrain
from wearing miniskirts on public
transport.
Muslims Told To Remove Veils
Under New Law
Muslim women in Australia's most
populous state will have to remove
veils to have their signatures offcially
witnessed under the latest laws giving
New South Wales offcials authority to
look under religious face coverings.
New South Wales state Attorney
General Greg Smith said in a statement
that beginning April 30; offcials such
as justices of the peace and lawyers
who witness statutory declarations
or affdavits without making identity
checks will be fned $220 Australian.
"If a person is wearing a face covering,
an authorized witness should politely
and respectfully ask them to show their
face," Smith said.
The government on Monday began an
information campaign to ensure the
public and offcials were aware of the new
penalties before they came into force.
The laws are a response to a court case
last year in which a Sydney woman
was convicted of falsely claiming that
a traffc policeman had attempted to
remove her niqab a veil that reveals
only the eyes.
A judge overturned the conviction
because the offcial who witnessed the
false claim did not look under the veil
of the person who made it, so the judge
was not certain that the defendant was
responsible.
The latest laws were passed Dec. 23
by the state parliament. They follow
New South Wales laws passed last year
that introduced a AU$5,500 fne and a
12-month prison sentence for anyone
who refuses to remove face coverings
when requested to do so by police.
Ikebal Patel, president of the Australian
Federation of Islamic Councils an
advocate for Australian Muslims, said
while some Muslims regarded the laws
as a knee-jerk reaction to the court
case, the majority did not object.
"I don't object as long as the laws are
enforced with respect and sensitivity,"
Patel said.
Patel said he was also a justice of
the peace and would never witness a
document without seeking proof of the
author's identity.
He said Muslim women can fnd female
justices of the peace working at most
post offces. Women who object to
showing policemen their faces have an
option of being taken to a police station
where their identities can be confrmed
by a female offcial.
New South Wales laws demanding the
removal of religious face coverings
are an Australian frst, although other
states including Victoria and Western
Australia are considering similar
legislation.
Muslims are a rapidly growing
minority of 400,000 within Australia's
Christian-majority population of 23
million.
Mum Invented 10 Kids To Pocket
Welfare
A BRITISH mother who claimed 42,000
($62,200) in welfare benefts turned out to
have invented 10 fctitious children.
Sarah Jane Smith, 41, also pretended
her two real kids were severely disabled
to justify claiming child tax credits.
The divorcee - who even falsely
claimed she was disabled - made the
claims between 2005 and 2010 after a
friend told her about the scam.
She admitted fraud, but was spared jail
by a judge.
Judge Adrian Smith told her, "This
was not fraud from the outset. But then
there was the deliberate, fraudulent act
of claiming for fctional children."
Beneft fraud costs British taxpayers an
estimated 1.2 billion a year.
Japanese City Builds 12M Tsunami Tower
A Japanese city has built a 12-metre-
high evacuation tower to protect its
residents from a tsunami.
Situated on a peninsula vulnerable to
tsunamis, Omaezaki City is also in a
known earthquake zone.
City offcials estimate that seven-meter
high waves could strike the coast if a
powerful earthquake hits offshore.
The 12-metre-high steel tower is
capable of holding 100 people, and the
foors have a net-like design so they
will not break from the pressure of a
tsunami.
Offcials say they built the $400,000
tower based on lessons from last year's
giant tsunami that hit Japan's north-
east coast.
2011 Disasters Cost $356 Billion
The United Nations says disasters cost
the world a record fgure of more than
$US380 billion ($356 billion) last year.
While countries are managing to
control the disaster death toll, economic
costs are increasing more than ever
before, said Margareta Wahlstrom,
the UN special envoy on disaster risk
reduction.
She called the $US380 billion fgure
"the minimum" cost, two-thirds higher
than the last record in 2005, when the
United States suffered huge losses
from Hurricane Katrina.
This time, earthquakes in Japan and
New Zealand, as well as foods in
Thailand and other countries sent the
cost skyrocketing.
"Earthquakes are the costliest and the
deadliest of disasters," Ms Wahlstrom
told a press conference to mark the
frst anniversary of the Japan quake on
March 11 last year.
The quake, tsunami and nuclear
explosion at Fukushima caused more
than $US210 billion of damage,
according to the UN disaster risk
reduction agency headed by Ms
Walhstrom.
It has put the cost of the Thailand foods
at more than $US40 billion.
New Zealand's central bank has
estimated that the deadly earthquake
on February 22 last year caused
about $US25 billion in losses, just for
rebuilding.
"The main message is that this is an
increasing and very rapidly increasing
trend, with increasingly economic
losses," Ms Wahlstrom said.
"Globally, the disaster mortalities
are proportionally declining because
countries are getting much better
at early warning systems and
preparedness.
"But the economics of disasters is
becoming a major threat to a number
of countries."
From 1999 to 2011, 73,000 kilometers
of roads were ripped apart by disasters
in just 19 countries in Africa, Asia and
Latin America, Ms Wahlstrom said.
Almost 64,000 schools were destroyed
in the same time.
Fifty per cent of the world's 7 billion
people are now exposed to disaster
risks because they live in vulnerable
areas, according to the UN offcial.

New Immigration Laws Likely
Means Lawyers Busy
Some Toronto lawyers are expecting
business to be brisk as more refugee
claimants begin focking to Canada
before tough new immigration laws
take effect in June.
A record amount of claimants are
expected to food into Canada from
Hungary, Mexico and other refugee-
producing nations before Ottawa
imposes a list of safe countries from
where asylum seekers can apply.
In those cases, refugee claims will
be decided in 45 days, with limited
appeals.
Pearson Airport border offcers said
theyre experiencing a huge number of
claimants nightly and workers recently
processed 105 Romas who arrived on a
fight from Hungary.
We expect a surge of claimants as the
deadline approaches, said Toronto
lawyer Guidy Mamann. There has
been a lot of interest and inquiries from
people so far.
Mamann said the trek to Canada
for claimants will escalate as June
approaches and people fnd out about
the new Balanced Refugee Reform
Act that is meant to streamline bogus
refugees.
People are very concerned, he said.
They want to get to Canada before it
is too late.
Lawyer Richard Kurland expects
claimants will wing it to Canada as
soon as they can.
I am not surprised, Kurland said.
This goes to show the need for reform,
perhaps sooner than planned.
Prominent Toronto immigration lawyer
Mendel Green said hes in favour of
the changes.
The system is being re-designed to
stop the abuses, Green said. It is
natural for refugee claimants to try
and get here if they know changes are
coming.
The top source countries for refugees
include China, Hungary, Mexico,
Colombia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Sri Lanka
and Pakistan.
Canada gets more refugee claims
from Europe than from Africa or
Asia 23% of all claims that were
made in 2011 were from Europeans,
immigration offcials said.
About 35,000 refugee claimants arrive
in Canada yearly.

Stabbing Outside South Edmonton
Mcdonald's
A man is dead following a stabbing in
south Edmonton early Tuesday morning.
The man was stabbed during a
confrontation at around 2:30 a.m.
outside the McDonald's restaurant at

Police are looking for a suspect in
what appears to be Edmonton's second
homicide of the year.
Police cordoned off the McDonald's

Paralyzed Man Billed $27,800 For
Medical Flight
A B.C. motocross champion left
paralyzed after an Ontario accident is
facing fnancial ruin after receiving a
$27,800 bill for his fight home.
Brent Worrall, 45, broke his back in six
places after falling during a race on a
track in Walton, Ontario, last August.
He estimates soaring 40 meters into the
air before hitting the ground.
"Once I hit the ground I knew exactly
where I was and knew my body was in
a whole lot of trouble," he told CTV's
Steele on Your Side from GF Strong
Rehabilitation Centre in Vancouver,
where he is recovering.
The father-of-three broke his neck,
sternum and all of his ribs. His heart
stopped four times before his frst
operation.
He was placed in a medically induced
coma, and fnally woke up two-and-
a-half days after his accident, in the
Critical Care Unit at the London Health
Sciences Centre.
Ontario health offcials wanted to send
Worrall back to B.C. on a medi-vac
fight, but the daredevil said he and
his wife were worried about the cost
because he didn't carry any extended
health coverage.
"We stated that we just had B.C. medical
coverage and that we wouldn't be able
to afford any special type of fight -- and
they assured us that they were taking
care of itand that we were not going
to be on the hook for it."
Days after arriving home in Vernon, the
daredevil nicknamed Airmail received
a bill for $27,800 for the air ambulance
fight.
"I have so many expenses that have
been incurred as a result of this
injury due to my personal care and
rehabilitation and to be burdened with
this $27,800, I mean, I'm confronted
with personal bankruptcy," he said.
His wife Gisela emailed the hospital
social worker who had handled their
case. She responded saying that she
believed it would be taken care of.
"I am in shock about your receiving a
bill. I was under the impression it was
being taken care of by us," trauma unit
social worker Karen Pierre wrote in an
email on Sept. 26, 2011.
While B.C.'s MSP program covers
basic care for British Columbians if
they're injured out of the province, it
will not cover travel expenses, like an
air ambulance.
The province says Worrell should
have stayed in the Ontario hospital
until he was well enough to fy on a
commercial fight home. B.C. doesn't
require patients to return home for care,
as long as equivalent care is available
in the other province. The Ministry of
Health told CTV News that it doesn't
have control over the bill because it's
from Ontario.
Rachelle Wood, head of
communications at London Health
Sciences Centre, told Steele on Your
Side in an email she can't speak about
Worrell's case because of privacy
concerns, but said the facility "informs
all patients of costs associated with
out-of-province transfers."
Wood maintains that Worrell would
have been advised of the bill before he
left the hospital.
"When the patient no longer requires
acute tertiary care they are repatriated
to a home hospital to complete their
care. Out of province transport is not
covered and the patient is advised of
the cost," she wrote.
That means Worrell must settle the
bill with Ontario health authorities,
or face having the massive bill sent to
collections agents. Worrell says he's
left fghting an uphill battle, when he
should be focusing on getting better.
"I didn't consent to the medical fight. I
consented to the point where they said
yeah, we're taking care of it -- you
don't have to pay for it.' I was good
with that. When I found out it was a
$27,800 one way fight -- I would have
took the Greyhound."
B.C. Cellphone Driving Blitz Nails 4,449
Drivers
RCMP in B.C.s Lower Mainland
says they handed out 4,449 tickets for
distracted driving offences during a
February blitz.
Thats nearly double the 2,300
tickets handed to drivers found to be
using hand-held electronic devices
while driving in February 2011."I
am extremely disappointed in these
results, as it shows that drivers aren't
taking the dangers of using hand-held
devices while driving seriously," said
RCMP Supt. Norm Gaumont. "We
must continue delivering the message
and educating the public on how
dangerous distracted driving really is.
They are putting the lives of others and
their own at risk.
Distracted driving was a contributing
factor to 27 fatalities in 2011, down
from the 46 in 2010, the release said.
The fne for driving while using an electronic
device not in hands-free mode is $167.
The numbers reported are only for
those areas policed by the RCMP
and do not include Lower Mainland
municipalities with local forces, such
as Vancouver and Delta.

Surrey Police Chief Retires
Mayor Dianne Watts and City
Council would like to thank Assistant
Commissioner Fraser MacRae, the
Offcer in Charge of the Surrey RCMP
Detachment for his years of dedication to
the City of Surrey. MacRae has announced
that he is retiring from the police force
after more than 35 years of service.
Fraser has dedicated his life to policing
and has consistently demonstrated
unwavering commitment to our
community. He is a leader in every
sense of the word, and he will be greatly
missed, says Mayor Dianne Watts.
Fraser pioneered innovative solutions
to crime reduction, has empowered the
people around him, and has always
been willing to collaborate and engage
the community in a meaningful way in
order to help reduce crime and increase
safety in Surrey.
Since June 2004, MacRae has been the
Offcer in Charge of the Surrey RCMP,
the largest detachment in the country,
leading a team of 661 offcers and
over 250 support staff. In 2010, Fraser
received a prestigious Order of Merit
medal from the Governor General
of Canada. This medal is given to a
select number of offcers nationwide
to recognize exceptional service
and commitment to Canada over an
extended period of duty.
Fraser has enthusiastically supported
the Surrey Crime Reduction Strategy
and has been an invaluable partner for
the City of Surrey in implementing
the strategys recommendations, says
Councillor Barinder Rasode, Chair of
the Police Committee.
MacRae will assist in the selection
process for the new Offcer in Charge
of the Surrey RCMP. His last day as
Offcer in Charge will be June 1, 2012.
Drug Shortage Could Affect
Elective Surgeries
A shortage of injectable painkillers
may eventually force some elective
surgeries to be postponed, the B.C.
government is warning, but plans
are in place to manage and share the
available supply.
Sandoz Canada, which manufactures
the drugs that are used to treat moderate
to severe pain after surgery and in
cancer patients, has stopped producing
the drugs for operational reasons.
That is expected to create a
shortage of drugs such as morphine,
hydromorphone and fentanyl for up to
18 months, according to B.C. Health
Minister Mike de Jong.
Provincial and federal health offcials are
working together to ensure all hospitals
share stocks when necessary and use oral
versions when appropriate, he said.
"At this time, there has been no known
effect on patient care. However, if
stocks continue to decrease, elective
procedures may have to be rescheduled
at some locations; health authorities
have not yet had to make any such
decisions," said a statement issued by
health offcials.
Palliative care patients, emergencies
and those requiring life-saving
procedures will be given top priority for
these drugs, de Jong said in statement
issued Wednesday.
Last month, Sandoz announced it was
scaling back production of certain
drugs at its Quebec plant mostly
painkillers, antibiotics and anesthetics
to upgrade operations after quality-
control assessments by the FDA warned
the factory fell short of its standards.
To exacerbate supply concerns, a fre
Sunday in the ceiling above the boiler
room of Sandoz's Boucherville plant
halted all production until at least
Monday, and the company says it is
assessing any impact to product supply.
BC Place Renaming Deal With
Telus Scrapped
The B.C. government has decided not
to sign a $40-million agreement with
Telus for the naming rights for BC
Place Stadium.
In a statement released Wednesday,
Jobs, Tourism and Innovation Minister
Pat Bell said the deal didn't provide the
best value for taxpayers.
"We also believe British Columbians
have a strong attachment to the BC
Place name," he said.
PavCo, the company that runs BC
Place, will now negotiate a technology
agreement with Telus, Bell said.
"The revitalized stadium provides
visitors with some of the most
advanced technology in any stadium
in North America and helps to create
a truly unique experience for guests
when they attend events at BC Place."
BC Place reopened in September after
a $563-million renovation, including a
retractable roof, new wider seats, some
of the world's largest television screens
and windows that turn on a high-tech
light show.
Security Guard Hurt In Dollar Store Theft
Police are still trying to piece together
how a security guard was seriously
injured after a theft at a North Surrey
dollar store.
On Saturday, at 6 p.m., Surrey RCMP
responded to a call at the Dollar Giant
at 105A Avenue and King George
Boulevard.
A customer inside the store alerted a
security guard of a woman stealing food.
The alleged thief fed the store, followed
by the 61-year-old security guard. The
guard was later found at the bottom of
stairway with serious head injuries.
Police believe they know the identity of
the thief, but are looking for witnesses to
the pursuit that took place after the theft.
One witness was found, but a passing
car obscured her view at the critical
point when the security guard tumbled
down the stairs.
Police are looking for more witnesses,
including the woman who alerted the
security guard to the theft.

New Immigration Measures To
Stop Marriage Fraud.
It has been quite some time that
discussions have been going on for
bringing out strict laws to put a brake
on fraud marriages. There has been a lot
of abuse of the Canadian immigration
system in this regard. In lot of Cases the
Canadian citizens or permanent residents
unknowingly marry a person from outside
Canada who just gets into the wedlock
with the purpose of getting permanent
residence into Canada. They have no
intention of settling or living with the
person who is sponsoring them. For them
this is just a marriage of convenience,
they withhold lot of information. They
just want to either jump the queue or fnd
this the easiest way to enter Canada. The
sponsor apart from other things is also
responsible fnancially for the sponsored
person which can be disastrous sometimes
if the sponsored person after landing in
Canada goes on welfare.
This is clearly termed as deceit. It has
been seen in many instances that the
sponsored spouse has used this as a
channel to enter Canada and once
they land in Canada, they simply walk
away from the sponsor and fnish the
relationship. Then the newly landed
sponsored person would marry someone
else in the home country or somewhere
outside Canada and sponsor his or her
new spouse causing unnecessary mental,
emotional and fnancial burden to the
person who had actually sponsored
them in the frst place.
The honorable minister had several town
hall meeting across the country for last more
than a year and has been getting a feedback
from communities and victims. To bring an
end to this he announced a change in the
policy last week, now onwards any person
who comes to Canada as a sponsored
spouse, if his or her relationship doesnt
work out, will not be able to go back and
sponsor another person as a spouse for fve
years. In simple terms if a person comes
to Canada as a husband or wife and gets a
divorce, then they cannot simply go back
to marry someone else and sponsor them
for 5 years.
This doesnt stop here, there are further
new legislations proposed to further
tighten the spousal applications to
make sure that only genuine applicants
are allowed to enter Canada.
The minister has already passed a law
to prevent unauthorized persons from
advising or representing any persons
with regards to any immigration related
matter. This legislation came in force
in June 2011 to crack down on crooked
immigration consultants. Anyone who
wants to get any information regarding
the Canadian Immigration, temporary
residence or permanent residence has an
option of either doing it themselves or
using only an authorized representative.

Simple Steps To Healthy Eating
A surprising, simple weight loss key
Lets say that your morning drive to
work involves dropping the kids off
at school and youre running late as
usual. You turn the key in the ignition.
Nothing happens. The only light shining
on the instrument panel is the fuel gauge
EMPTY. You arent going anywhere.
When it comes to our cars, we get it.
Without fuel, the engine cant run. But
when it comes to our bodies, theres
denial. Scientifc studies are in and it
seems that Mom was right: breakfast is
the most important meal of the day.
Eating breakfast helps keep weight
down by stoking your metabolism
by 10% early in the day. A nutritious
breakfast also helps you resist the
high-fat, high-sugar mid-morning
snack that goes straight to your waist.
More importantly its very diffcult to
get your daily requirement of nutrients
when you skip breakfast.
If you dont feel hungry in the morning
examine your routine. Do you have
dinner late, or snack just before bed?
If so, reschedule your day to ensure
an earlier dinner. Ease into your new
breakfast strategy with juice or fruit at
home, following up with some nuts or
yogurt on your frst work break.
Healthy and easy breakfasts
Blend fruit and yogurt for a
breakfast smoothie
Leftovers from last nights
dinner
Whole grain English muffn with
tuna; or cheese and tomato
Hard-boiled egg (make at night
and you have a fast breakfast-to-
go).
Improve digestion
If you experience gas, belching,
bloating, indigestion or cramping after
a meal, youll be happy to learn its
not always what you eat but how you
eat it that impacts your digestion. It
works like this: different foods digest
at different rates. Fruits are ready to
move out of the stomach within 20-
30 minutes, while meat proteins can
linger in the stomach for four hours.
If you eat them at the same time, the
fruit digests quickly, stewing with the
meat for hours and fermenting in your
stomach until the entire meal is ready
for the next phase of digestion. This
fermentation often causes gas, leading
to the other side effects of a poorly
digested meal. Improved digestion
increases the absorption of nutrients
from your food.
The perfect diet plan
Replace fat-free, carb-free diets with
a healthy balanced diet by controlling
portions and percentages. Build your
meal with 40% complex carbohydrates,
30% protein and 30% healthy fats its
easy to do with this handy scale.
Improve your energy
Whether your goal is to improve your
energy, lose or maintain your weight or
simply enjoy good health pay attention
to your metabolism. Your metabolism
needs good fuel regularly. Eat fve to
six balanced, nutrient-dense meals a
day (every 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 hours) to keep
blood sugar stable. Choose foods that
are good sources of vitamins, minerals,
EFAs, protein and fber.
Drink Up
Our various body parts consist of
between 75% - 85% water, so you
want to be sure to get enough. Be sure
to drink a minimum of eight 8-ounce
glasses of pure, fltered water daily,
and more when its hot outside or
when youre exercising. Remember
when you feel thirsty youre already
dehydrated.
Water Tips
Drink 8 ounces of water
approximately 20 minutes before
each meal
For every caffeinated or alcoholic
beverage or pop you drink, have
an additional glass of water.
Know when to stop
Try to stop eating at least three hours
before bed-time so your digestive tract
isnt awake all night. It needs rest too.
If youre feeling hungry, have a drink
of cool water. Chances are youre really
only thirsty. Failing that, have a small
piece of easy-to-digest, low glycemic
fruit like a granny smith apple.
Food Combining Guidelines:
Always eat fruit alone, at least
half an hour before and two
hours after other food. Avoid
combining fruit with protein
Avoid mixing high-starch
carbohydrates with protein,
instead combine protein with
non-starch vegetables. Replace
your meat-and-potatoes dinner
with a meat and vegetable stir-
fry
Eat high-starch vegetables
(potatoes) with non-starch
vegetables (broccoli)
Only drink small sips of
water with meals, liquids slow
digestion.
Because these guidelines speed up your
digestion they may not be benefcial
for people with hypoglycemia or
adrenal gland issues.
Eating Cheese, Milk Could Make You Brainier
Dairy food could be essential for a healthy
brain, a new study suggests.
The study, by US and Australian
researchers, involving 1,000 adults, found
those who regularly have dairy products
such as milk, cheese and yoghurt score
better on tests of mental ability than
people who never, or rarely, consume
dairy products, as reported.
Although the research needs following-
up, as it did not conclusively establish
the link between dairy and fatty diets and
brain power, it highlights an intriguing
line of research.
It follows another US study, involving 104
pensioners, where scientists found older
people with higher levels of benefcial
fats in their blood had less brain shrinkage
typical of Alzheimer's disease.
These benefcial fats - omega-3 essential
fats - are found in foods such as oily fsh.
The study, published in Neurology,
the journal of the American Academy
of Neurology, measured the levels of
different fats in people's blood, rather than
simply relying on their reports of what
they tended regularly to eat.
It's now well established from brain-tissue
studies that our mental functions depend
heavily on a good supply of fat.
Our brain is composed of 60 percent fat.
The brain cells are insulated by sheaths of
myelin composed of 75 percent fat. This
myelin fat needs to be replaced constantly.

ARIES (March 21 - April 19)
A successful journey begins to show
its positive effects. A trusted outft is
getting slip shod and you may need to
look elsewhere for your needs. Arrange
to be personally involved in a social
work drive for future beneft. A fne
week to say sweet nothings to a loved
one.
TAURUS (April 20 - May 20)
A clash of opinions adds to the variety,
and energizes you into swift action.
A debate on the pros and cons of a
venture remains academic and needs
your practical initiative to take it off the
ground. Do not be obvious in wooing
your lover - a little mystery adds to the
fun in this week.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)
Work connected to sports and outdoor
activity gets off to a fne start. A busy
week where you can give full vent to
your powers of communication - a
talkathon. A missing fle or document
is located. This means its high time
you were slightly more organised.
CANCER (June 21 - July 22)
Cross connections, mixed up signals
and such give you all the wrong
messages in this week. So if you are
peeved by the actions of a friend,
think again, or hurt by the words of
a dear one, stop, look and review the
situation. A bonus or a windfall gain is
on its way.
LEO (July 23 - Aug 22)
Last minute arrangements will not
work so you must rely on advance
planning. Community work beckons,
but it is making you a wee bit unpopular
with some people. Stop nit-picking and
look at the larger gains in a personal
relationship you value.
VIRGO (Aug 23 - Sept 21)
Expect some interference from vested
interests in a path breaking decision.
Doing the right thing will bring
satisfaction despite the hurdles. An
engaging conversation turns your mind
towards further research. A trip may be
in the offng.
LIBRA (Sept 22 - Oct 23)
Others around you may well call it
Smiley's week - your little gestures and
encouragement bring a smile to many
faces in this week. Your positive energy
rubs off on colleagues and all work
harder than usual. Evenings brings you
the company of close friends in a nice
long unwinds and catch up binge.
SCORPIO (Oct 24 - Nov 21)
Responding to another's need will
bring happiness. A loved one needs
your support in a challenge. A feeling
of doing less than you can handle
overtakes you but this will pass. Fiction
or other fantasy involvement will help
you get your balance back.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 - Dec 21)
Lots of people want to share their
private secrets, doubts and fears with
you. You have little choice but to listen
and offer advice when asked. Naturally
work becomes second priority. Of
course if you work in isolation this
whole thing can be avoided.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 19)
You are dissatisfed with the rewards
your work has earned. Lie low now if
you wish to enjoy your just desserts
later. Spend time with a youth who
needs direction. Catching up with a
hobby will bring a sense of relaxation
from daily affairs.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 - Feb 18)
The home becomes the focus of
attention with redecoration, repairs and
even gardening. Financial affairs are
slowly confguring in your favour in
this week. An estimate for a long term
project is undervalued so doesnt go by
appearances.
PISCES (Feb 19 - Mar 20)
Independence, originality and ideas
are on the ascendant. The family needs
you for moral support. A business
arrangement is getting too personal
- what are you going to do about
it? Freedom of expression may be
curtailed in a political turn of events.

Tips And Traps For First Home Buyers
A steady savings plan, the odd
government bonus or two and a realistic
attitude to where and what property
you buy are the keys to getting on the
home ownership treadmill.
And though some frst-home buyers
might think three or four years of
saving is a long time, it's nothing
compared with the 25 or 30 years they
will spend repaying that mortgage.
As with most fnancial quests, there
are tips for, and traps in, reaching your
goals.
SAVINGS SLOG
There's no getting around the fact that
saving the average deposit usually
takes several years, so you might as
well get used to the idea as early as
possible by starting a savings routine
as soon as you begin to earn an income.
The idea behind clever budgeting is
to be honest with yourself, remove
any unnecessary spending and not set
unrealistic limits.
If you do blow your budget, re-evaluate
and set a new budget or start again but
don't lose heart.
Little things can make a big difference.
If you buy your lunch every day, try
bringing it from home, or if you enjoy
eating out at restaurants, try cutting
back to once a month. The difference
this makes to your savings even over
one year can be more than you think.
Other ways to boost your savings
include:
- Cut rental costs by living with a
family member or in a share house.
- Open a high-interest savings or term
deposit account that does not have
ATM access, to remove the option of
impulse spending.
- Set up an automatic transfer from
your pay directly into your savings
account.
- Limit your treats and spending
splurges to special occasions.
- Set up a First Home Saver Account
to save tax on the interest earned and
receive an extra contribution from the
Government.
FOUR-YEAR ITCH
A new survey found it takes the average
frst-home buying couple 4.1 years to
save a 20 per cent deposit based on
saving 20 per cent of their joint income.
This is about two months less than it
was a year ago but about fve months
longer than it took back in 2006.
TAKING THE PLUNGE
Have you heard the old saying: Buy
with your head, not your heart? Well, it
all seems to go out the window when it
comes to frst-home purchases.
However, you can mix the two and still
make a good decision.
Location and good research are the
"secrets" to the best purchase. When
you're buying your frst home, it can be
an emotional experience, often governed
by ambience and personal taste.
What can work better, though, is to
balance out those emotional draw cards
with a few cold, hard facts such as the
best location you can afford, what areas
offer value and what facilities you need
easy access to.
Start by targeting suburbs or areas you
can afford and would most like to live in,
and then establish the general price range
for the type of house or unit you are after.
Narrow your search by deciding which
amenities you need to be near, such
as schools, public transport, shopping
centers and parks. And then strike out
the streets or areas you want to avoid,
such as busy thoroughfares.
Create a checklist of all the features you
want. Include things such as how many
bedrooms and bathrooms, whether you
need a garage and the size of the land.
Then it's time to hit the market.
GETTING a foot in your own front door is one of the biggest fnancial hurdles most people have to face, yet the dream can become a reality in a few years.
Reminding Canadians of Potential Safety Concerns in Home Canning and Bottling
Health Canada would like to remind
Canadians of the importance of good food
safety practices while home canning.
With the renewed popularity of seasonal,
local eating and the desire to prepare
healthy foods at home, many Canadians
are looking to home canning (also known
as home bottling) to preserve food for
later use. However, if home canned foods
are not properly prepared, they can cause
serious illness such as botulism.
If you are home canning or bottling
your own foods (such as jams, pickles,
soups and sauces), the following
steps will help to reduce the risk
of contamination or growth from
Clostridium botulinum:
Clean and sanitize your
hands, all work surfaces, utensils, and
equipment and keep them clean during
all stages of the canning process.
Use a pressure canner which
is a large pressure vessel optimized
for canning. A pressure canner is not
the same as a pressure cooker. Strictly
follow the manufacturer's instructions
for canning or bottling foods considered
to be low-acid, such as seafood, meats,
vegetables and sauces. These low-acid
foods must be processed in a pressure
canner to destroy any Clostridium
botulinum spores that might be present.
High-acid foods such as fruit,
pickles, sauerkraut, jams, jellies,
marmalades and fruit butters will not
support the growth of Clostridium
botulinum and can be safely processed
in a boiling water canner.
Tomatoes are borderline high-
acid food and require an acid, such as
lemon juice or vinegar, to be added for
safer canning.
When following currently
tested recipes, do not substitute
ingredients, amounts or the jar size
that is in the recipe because this can
cause the time or pressure needed
during pressure canning or boiling
water canning to change. This can
lead to bacteria remaining in the food.
Always follow recommended recipes
and processes to the recommended
temperature, time and pressure.
The jar lid should be frmly
sealed and concave (curved slightly
inwards). Nothing should have leaked
from the jar, no unnatural odours should
be detected, and no liquid should spurt
out when the jar is opened.
Label your home-canned food,
including the date it was canned. For
best quality, use within one year from
the date they were made
Be sure to store your home-
canned food in a cool, dry place.
If you are buying or are gifted
home canned products, ask if they have
followed proper safety steps.
Always remember: never eat canned
foods if you suspect the item has been
tampered with, if the closure/seal has
been broken, or if the container is
swollen or leaking. When in doubt,
throw it out!
Botulism is a serious illness that can result
from eating improperly prepared canned
or bottled foods. Botulism is caused by a
bacterium - called Clostridium botulinum
- that naturally produces toxins as part
of its normal life cycle. The toxin that
causes botulism is colourless, odourless,
tasteless and invisible to the naked eye
and is not necessarily destroyed by
cooking, so preventing the toxin from
forming is essential.
Symptoms of botulism range from
nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness,
headache, double vision and dryness
in the throat and nose, to respiratory
failure, paralysis and, in some cases,
death. The onset of symptoms is
generally from 12 to 36 hours after
ingesting the toxin. Recovery can take
several weeks to months.
It is estimated that there are
approximately 11 million cases of food-
related illnesses of all types in Canada
every year. Many of these illnesses could
be prevented by following proper food
handling and preparation techniques.

Opposition Mounts On Scrapping Of Race
Relations Commissioners Offce In New Zealand
New Zealand National Governments
proposal to scrap the Offce of Race
Relations Commissioner is attracting
huge opposition from minority groups and
ethnic organisations in that country. Late
last year, an amendment was introduced
to Parliament to do away with this chair
and these duties are to be performed by
human rights commissioner.
Speaking on Indian Radio Station Radio
Tarana in Auckland on a talkback show,
former Race Relations Commissioner
and List Labour Member of Parliament,
Dr Rajen Prasad, an Indo Fijian, used
the adage If it ain't broke, don't fx it
something that has been working well
does not need to be changed, as it is a
mistake to try to improve it. He told the
station that since it was established over
four decades ago, the Offce of Race
Relations Commissioner has worked well
without any complaints. It was diluted in
2002 when it lost its prosecution powers
and was merged with Human Rights
Commissioners Offce, but the chair
remained. Prasad said there have been
no calls, reports or recommendations
anywhere for its scrapping and mere
economic reason is no justifcation for
such a drastic and unpopular move.
The Auckland Council's Ethnic Peoples
Advisory Panel (EPAP) in a media
statement said it did not support the call
to abolish the title of Race Relations
Commissioner.
The Acting Chair of the Ethnic Panel,
Rev. Amail Habib said that despite
assurances that the work of the offce
would continue, the Panel strongly
believed that abolishing the title
minimized the impact that racism and
discrimination had on our multicultural
nation's well being.
He said the removal of a named title
would further marginalize and make
invisible those communities most often
affected by the consequences of racism
and discrimination.
In fact, what the Ethnic Panel advocates
for is the revision of the mandate of the
Race Relations Offce so that complaints
of racism and discrimination are
more readily investigated and that the
criteria for evaluating and determining
complaints do not favour the perpetrator
of racist and discriminatory practices,
he said.
If anything, he said the Panel would
also like to see the Offce able to make
binding judgments on the breaches of
human rights affected by racism and
discrimination.
Similar sentiments were also expressed
by Waitakere Ethnic Board (WEB) in a
media statement. It agreed with Prasad
that they were unaware of any reports,
recommendations and reasons for such a
drastic and unpopular move to scrap the
chair.
WEB concurred with EPAP proposal
for the position to get back its teeth and
prosecution powers it lost in 2002 with
merger with Human Rights Commission.
They saw its removal as an injustice and
a poorly thought out policy. WEB said
with such a huge and increasing ethnic
population, New Zealand still had no
Ministry looking after the interest of its
ethnic population.
WEB suspects this move may be due to
power play where all the powers are now
to be concentrated in the Human Rights
Commission with race relations portfolio
being watered down. It suspects some
strong views and statements from the
Race Relations Commissioner casting
the government and the ruling elite in a
negative light may be one of the reasons
to punish this offce, said Waitakere
Ethnic Board statement.
WEB called on all ethnic organisations,
together with all Pacifc, Maori, ethnic
and all reasonable Parliamentarians to
oppose this unexplained move to dilute
this offce.
Meanwhile, Waitakere Indian
Association (WIA) has also opposed the
move to scrap the chair of race relations.
In a statement, it said the association had
a close working relation with the current
chair of Race Relations, Joris De Bres.
The Race Relations Commissioner
had been a regular speaker at our Holi
Festivals which encouraged diversity
and multiculturalism. As Race Relations
Day falls in March and coincides with
Thakur Ranjit Singh
Holi, this festival also encompasses Race
Relations Day, the statement said.
WIA further added that this year
Holi would be on 11 March, 2012 at
Trust Stadium grounds in Henderson
from midday and Race Relations
Commissioner has again been invited to
speak, play the colours of Holi and mark
Race Relations Day.
Indo Fijians are prominently represented
in Auckland Council's Ethnic Peoples
Advisory Panel, Waitakere (West
Auckland) Ethnic Board and Waitakere
Indian Association.

Resumes Dont Win Job Offers, Only Interviews Do
Many people put too much weight on
the resume. Simply put, the resume's
purpose is to get your phone to ring. Its
not going to win you a position before
you get in the door. Sure, you can gain a
competitive advantage with a well-written
resume, since the interviewer will have
preconceived notions of who you are and
what you can bring to the table. However,
the interviewer will not be smitten enough
to hire you based on the resume alone. To
win an interviewer over, you will have to
do well during the interview.
This is because an employer cannot
possibly identify all she needs to
know just by reading your resume. He
will need to ask clarifying questions.
Just as important, he will assess your
personality to determine compatibility.
On the fipside, you will want to conduct
your own due diligence by actively
participating during the interview. In other
words, you should ask questions because
you cant learn everything you need to
know about the hiring organization by
only reading the classifeds.
As you can see, neither you nor the
interviewer can make a defnitive decision
solely based on a piece of paper. Keep that
in mind when you are tempted to respond to
a question with, You can fnd the answer
on my resume. This response is not only
rude, but if you feel that you are repeating
information from the resume, that means
you are not providing the interviewer
with well-rounded responses. The resume
provides a snippet of your experience.
The interview is an opportunity for you
to expand on your experience. It is not a
time to provide a play-by-play repeat of
the resume.
That said, you could use your resume
to your advantage by referring to it
and expanding on the information.
For example, lets say the interviewer
asks, Name an accomplishment you
are most proud of. You can respond
by saying something like, In the
introduction of my resume, you will
note that I included that I am a sought-
after change agent who paves the way
for smooth-running, lucrative retail
organizations. An example of this is
the time I reversed the departments
prior history of low effciency and
productivity by shifting district
manager mindset from a reactionary
put out fres outlook to a proactive
approach. This included championing
change-management solutions that
focused on setting benchmarks and
measuring results to achieve high
performance levels. By elaborating
on the statement during the interview,
you are providing context and concrete
details that will interest the interviewer.
The resume and the interview work as
a team. You need the resume to get in
the door, and you need the interview to
land a job offer. So give each the time
and effort it deserves.

The Story of Cinderella
Continued from last week
When the Prince came out upon the
Palace steps, he could see no sign of
the lovely Princess. The guards at the
gate told him that nobody at all had
passed that way, except a little ragged
kitchen maid; and the Prince had to go
back to the ball with only a little glass
slipper to remind him of the beautiful
lady with whom he was so desperately
in love.
The next day the King sent out all
his heralds and trumpeters with a
Proclamation, saying that the Prince
would marry the lady whose foot the
slipper ftted. But though all the ladies
in the land tried on the slipper it would
ft none of themtheir feet were all
too big!
At last the heralds came to the house
where Cinderella lived. The eldest
stepsister tried the slipper on frst, but
it was quite impossible for her to get
her foot into it, for her great toe was
too big. Then her mother, who was
watching eagerly, fetched a carving-
knife.
"Be quick, cut the toe off," she said;
"what does it matter if you are lame
if you are the Prince's bride you will
always ride in a carriage!"
So the eldest sister cut off her big toe,
but it was no use, the slipper would not
ft, and at last she was obliged to hand
it to her sister.
But the other sister had no better luck.
She did, indeed, get her toes inside,
but her foot was much too long, and
her heel stuck out behind. The mother
urged her to cut it off.
"What does it matter?" she said. "If you
are the Prince's bride you will never
need to walk anymore."
But although she cut her heel off, the
slipper was still too small; and at length
she, too, had to give up the attempt to
force her foot into it.
Then Cinderella came shyly out from
behind the door where she had been
standing out of sight, and asked if she
might try on the slipper. Her stepmother
and sisters were very angry, and were
about to drive her away with blows, but
the herald stopped them.
"The Prince wishes every woman in
the land to try on this slipper," he said;
and asking Cinderella to sit on a chair,
he knelt down and tried the slipper on
her foot.
While everyone stood and stared in
astonishment, Cinderella drew from
her pocket the other slipper and put it
on. No sooner had she done so than her
ragged frock changed into the beautiful
ball dress again, and she stood up before
them allthe beautiful lady with whom
the Prince had fallen in love at the ball.
The Prince was overjoyed to fnd her
again; and they were married at once
And It Fitted Her Exactly!
with much pomp amid great rejoicings.
As for the wicked sisters they were
so jealous that they both turned green
with envy. They grew uglier and uglier
every day, until at last they grew so
dreadfully ugly that nobody could
bear to look at them any longer. But
Cinderella became more and more
beautiful, and lived happily with the
Prince for ever afterwards.
Prevent Meningitis
Tips to Protect Your Teen
There's a lot you can do to help
prevent meningitis in your teen. A
meningococcal vaccine can help
prevent leading cause of bacterial
meningitis in teens. Your teen can also
take steps to enhance his or her immune
system and to prevent the spread of the
disease.
Meningitis Prevention: Protect With
a Vaccine
Meningococcal disease is a leading
cause of bacterial meningitis in
teens and young adults. The CDC
recommends a meningococcal vaccine
for all children 11 to 18. The vaccine is
routinely given at 11-12, but it is also
recommended to:
Anyone who has been exposed to
meningitis during an outbreak
Anyone traveling to or living
where meningococcal disease is
common
Military recruits
People with certain immune
system disorders or a damaged or
missing spleen
Is your teen planning on going to
a sleep-away camp? Be sure to get
them vaccinated for meningococcal
disease if they haven't received the
vaccination already. Close contact with
other kids at camp puts your younger
teen at increased risk just as college
dormitories do.
Meningitis Prevention: Avoid the
Spread of Disease
You cannot get meningitis from casual
contact, such as by breathing the air
that an infected person has breathed.
These bacteria do not live long outside
the human body. But you can get it
from close or prolonged contact with
an infected person. The bacteria that
cause meningococcal meningitis live
in the back of the nose and throat
and are carried by 10% to 25% of the
population.
Good personal hygiene can help
prevent the spread of disease:
Don't share food, glasses, water
bottles, or eating utensils.
Don't share tissues or towels.
Don't share lip-gloss or lipstick.
Wash hands often with soap and
water.
Remember: A person with bacterial
meningitis can remain contagious
for about 24 hours after starting
antibiotics. If a person with meningitis
has exposed your teen to the disease,
ask the doctor whether it is necessary
to take antibiotics. Doing this for a few
days may help prevent your teen from
getting the disease.
Meningitis Prevention: Enhance the
Immune System
Keeping the immune system healthy
helps prevent susceptibility to a wide
range of diseases. It may also help
prevent infection by the viruses and
bacteria that cause meningitis. This is
just one more reason your teen may
beneft from:
Eating a well-balanced diet, rich in
vegetables and fruits
Getting enough sleep
Exercising regularly
Avoiding cigarettes, drugs, and
alcohol

Can Chronic Ear Infections Cause
Long-Term Hearing Loss?
My daughter has had one ear infection
after another. When she gets an
infection, she seems to have trouble
hearing, but with medicine it always
gets better. Still, Im worried that these
infections could lead to permanent
hearing loss somewhere down the line.
Could this happen?
- Cynthia
Ear infections are common in childhood.
As with your daughter, some kids do
have temporary hearing loss due to the
accumulation of fuid in the middle ear,
but it usually goes away with treatment.
It's very rare, however, for kids to
develop permanent hearing loss, even
when they've had several ear infections.
A child with frequent or chronic ear
infections is at risk for permanent
hearing loss only when damage has
been done to the eardrum, the bones
of the ear, or the hearing nerve. Since
your daughter's hearing appears to
return to normal after treatment for
an ear infection, she's probably not at
risk for permanent hearing loss. But if
you're concerned, talk to your doctor
about scheduling a hearing exam.
If your daughter's ear infections
continue to be a problem, the doctor
might refer her to an otolaryngologist
(ear, nose, and throat doctor), who may
suggest ear tube placement to help
reduce the incidence of ear infections
and limit the potential problems they
can cause to her hearing.

Diabetes
The Facts on Diabetes
Diabetes is a condition where people
don't produce enough insulin to meet
their body's needs and/or their cells
don't respond properly to insulin.
Insulin is important because it moves
glucose, a simple sugar, into the body's
cells from the blood. It also has a
number of other effects on metabolism.
The food that people eat provides the
body with glucose, which is used by
the cells as a source of energy. If insulin
isn't available or doesn't work correctly
to move glucose from the blood into
cells, glucose will stay in the blood.
High blood glucose levels are toxic and
cells that don't get glucose are lacking
the fuel they need.
There are two main kinds of diabetes:
type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.
More than 90% of all people with
diabetes have type 2. Overall, about 30
million people in North America have
diabetes. Only about two-thirds of
people with type 2 diabetes are aware of
it and are receiving treatment because,
for many people, early symptoms are
not noticeable without testing.
Type 1 diabetes occurs when the
pancreas cannot make insulin.
Everyone with type 1 diabetes requires
insulin injections.
Type 2 diabetes occurs when the
pancreas does not make enough insulin
or the body does not use insulin properly.
It usually occurs in adults, although in
some cases children may be affected.
People with type 2 diabetes usually
have a family history of this condition
and are most often overweight. People
with type 2 diabetes may eventually
need insulin injections. This condition
occurs most commonly in people of
First Nations descent, Hispanics, and
North Americans of African descent.
Another less common form is
gestational diabetes, a temporary
condition that occurs during pregnancy.
According to the Canadian Diabetes
Association (CDA), about 4% of
women, and up to 18% of First Nations
women, will develop gestational
diabetes. The problem usually clears
up after delivery, but women who have
had gestational diabetes have a higher
risk of developing type 2 diabetes later
in life.
Causes of Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune
disorder. It's believed that a
combination of genetic predisposition
and additional (as yet unidentifed)
factors provoke the immune system
into attacking and killing the insulin-
producing cells in the pancreas.
Type 2 diabetes is mainly caused
by insulin resistance. This means no
matter how much or how little insulin
is made, the body can't use it as well as
it should. As a result, glucose can't be
moved from the blood into cells. Over
time, the excess sugar in the blood
gradually poisons the pancreas causing
it to make less insulin and making
it even more diffcult to keep blood
glucose under control.
Obesity is a leading cause of insulin
resistance - 90% of people with type
2 diabetes are overweight. Genetic
factors are also likely to be involved in
the cause of type 2 diabetes. A family
history of the disease has been shown
to increase the chances of getting it.
Other risk factors for the development
of type 2 diabetes include:
a history of gestational diabetes
being 40 years of age or older
blood vessel disease
First Nation, Hispanic, South
Asian, Asian, or African
descent
giving birth to a large baby
high blood pressure
high cholesterol
polycystic ovary syndrome
schizophrenia
prediabetes or impaired
fasting glucose
Symptoms and Complications of
Diabetes
People with type 1 diabetes who are
not being treated urinate frequently
and feel excessively thirsty. They
usually feel very tired and experience
severe weight loss despite normal or
excessive food intake.
The symptoms of type 2 diabetes
usually appear more gradually.
People with type 2 diabetes who do not
have their blood glucose under control
often have a persistent, mild thirst.
They urinate frequently, and often feel
mild fatigue and complain of blurred
vision. Many women with the disease
have recurring vaginal yeast infections.
Diabetes is a major cause of heart
disease, the leading cause of death in
Canada. It's also the biggest cause of
blindness and kidney failure in adults.
Older adults with diabetes are twice as
likely to develop high blood pressure
as people without diabetes.
People with diabetes are also 25 times
more likely to undergo foot and other
"lower extremity" amputations due
to circulatory problems. Between
one-third and one-half of men who
have diabetes will experience erectile
dysfunction at some point.
Diagnosing Diabetes
Diabetes is diagnosed with simple
blood tests. Your doctor may diagnose
diabetes if the level of glucose in
your blood after 8 hours of fasting is
7.0 mmol/L or higher. If your fasting
blood glucose is between 6.1 mmol/L
and 6.9 mmol/L, then you may have a
condition known as impaired fasting
glucose or prediabetes, which may
later develop into diabetes.
Diabetes is also diagnosed if a blood
glucose level taken anytime of the
day without regard to meals is 11.1
mmol/L or higher, plus you have
symptoms characteristic of diabetes
(e.g., increased thirst, increased
urination, unexplained weight loss).
It is important to note that one high
blood glucose reading does not mean
you have diabetes. In most cases, at
least 2 high blood glucose readings are
required before your doctor will make
a diagnosis, unless type 1 diabetes is
suspected or the person is very sick.
Doctors may also diagnose diabetes
based on the results of an oral glucose
tolerance test (OGTT). With this test, a
person fasts and then is given a drink
containing 75 g of carbohydrate. The
blood sugar is checked at fasting and
2 hours after drinking the solution. A
blood sugar greater than 11.1 mmol/L
after 2 hours confrms the diagnosis of
diabetes.
Treating and Preventing Diabetes
Currently, type 1 diabetes is not
preventable. However, studies have
shown that type 2 diabetes can be
prevented by adopting lifestyle
changes that include eating a healthy
diet and exercising.
In addition, some studies have
shown that certain oral antidiabetes
medications may play a role in
preventing the development of type
2 diabetes for people who are at
high risk of developing it. Lifestyle
changes and medications may prevent
approximately 30% to 60% of type 2
diabetes.
Diabetes is a chronic condition, and
it can last an entire life. The goal
of treating diabetes is to keep blood
glucose levels as close to a normal
range as possible. This prevents the
symptoms of diabetes and the long-
term complications of the condition. If
you've been diagnosed with diabetes,
your doctor - working with the
members of your diabetes care team
- will help you fnd your target blood
glucose levels.
More than most conditions, treating
diabetes requires a signifcant amount
of real effort on the person's part.
Coping with diabetes is a lifelong
challenge, so people with diabetes
should not be afraid to speak with
a doctor or pharmacist if they feel
overwhelmed.
Part of a treatment plan for diabetes
will involve learning about diabetes,
how to manage it, and how to
prevent complications. Your doctor,
diabetes educator, or other health care
professional will help you learn what
you need to know so you are able to
manage your diabetes as effectively as
possible. Keep in mind that learning
about diabetes and its treatment will
take time. Involving family members
or other people who are signifcant in
your life can also help you manage
your diabetes.
Although up to 30% of people with
diabetes use herbal products to help
control blood sugar, there are not
enough good quality studies to show
that these treatments are safe and
effective.
People with type 1 diabetes need
insulin* continuously to survive.
There are three important things
a person can do to treat type 2
diabetes:
make lifestyle changes such as diet
and exercise
use medication
monitor blood glucose levels
Like many conditions, treatment of
type 2 diabetes begins with lifestyle
changes, particularly in regards to
diet and exercise. If you have type
2 diabetes, speak to your doctor and
diabetes educator about an appropriate
diet. You may be referred to a dietitian.
It is also a good idea to speak with your
doctor before beginning an exercise
program to determine what kind and
how much exercise is appropriate.

$336.4 Million Powerball Winner
Claims Prize
Louise White, an 81 year-old Rhode
Island resident, came forward Tuesday
as the winner of a $336.4 million
Powerball lottery, the third largest
prize in the game's history.
"I'm very happy and I'm very proud,"
she said. "We are truly blessed. Thank
you."
White bought the winning ticket last
month in Newport, Rhode Island, after
a family member had a craving for
rainbow sherbet and brought her to a
store where she purchased the ticket.
"We're very excited to be a part of
this little bit of history; the winner is
a lovely woman and valued customer,"
said store employee Suzi Robinson.
"We are very happy for her."
After realizing she had won, White
tucked the winning ticket into her
Bible and went to sleep holding the
Bible, bringing it with her to breakfast
the next day until she could eventually
store it in a safe deposit box.
White then sought legal counsel
and established a trust for the funds,
according to her attorney, Gregory Fater.
It's called the Rainbow Sherbert Trust,
named for the snack that prompted
her visit to the store, even though the
correct spelling is sherbet.
Fater described White as "extremely
grounded," and approached her
newfound wealth with "extreme poise
and level headedness."
White elected to take the cash option
and will receive a lump sum payment
of $210 million, the highest cash option
payout ever for Powerball, according
to lottery offcials.
The state of Rhode Island will collect
$14.7 million, while the federal
government also tallies up to $52.5
million in revenue.
Mum Loses Legs Saving Her
Children From Tornado
AN Indiana mum in the US who saved
her children's lives by shielding them
with her own body during a tornado
has lost parts of both her legs.
Stephanie Decker, 36, said that she
picked up her children, eight-year-
old Dominic and fve-year-old Reese,
up early from school on Friday when
she heard the storm was approaching.
They were in the family's basement in
Henryville, Indiana, when the storm hit.
"There was wind like I had never seen
wind before," Decker said. "Then the
glass broke, and as soon as the glass
broke the whole house started shifting."
Decker made a split-second decision to
save her children, tying them up in a blanket
and throwing herself on top of them.
"Everything started hitting my back:
pillars, beams, furniture, everything
was just slamming into my back," she
said.
"[My children] were screaming,
'Mommy I can't live without you, I
don't want to die, please don't let me
die.' And I said, 'We are not going to
die, we are going to make it.'"
Miraculously, her children emerged
from the storm completely unscathed.
Decker lost one leg above the knee and
the other above the ankle.
"When I looked down and looked at my
leg and realized either it was cut off or
it was barely attached, I took my phone
and made a video to my husband telling
him that I loved him, and my children
that I loved them, in case something
was to happen," Decker said.
"I prayed to have the strength to
survive, that I want these kids to have a
mum and I did not want them to grow
up without me," she added.
Her prayers were answered when she
was rescued by a neighbour. He ran for
help and found a deputy sheriff travelling
on a four-wheeler not far away.
The deputy applied tourniquets to
Decker's legs to halt her blood loss.
She has been scheduled to undergo
surgery.
The Decker's house was completely
destroyed in the tornado.
Valedictorian Facing Deportation
Gets Reprieve In Florida
A Florida high school valedictorian and
her sister, who were facing deportation,
instead met with lawmakers Wednesday
after being granted a reprieve.
An immigration judge ruled last week
that Daniela Pelaez, 18, and her sister
Dayana were to be deported for being
in the country illegally.
But Immigration and Customs
Enforcement on Tuesday gave the
sisters a two-year reprieve. The
decision was made under the policy
of prosecutorial discretion, which is
designed to prioritize deportation for
illegal border crossers with a criminal
record, instead of those who pose little
or no risk.
"The agency exercises prosecutorial
discretion, on a case by case basis,
as necessary to focus resources on
our stated priorities," ICE spokesman
Nestor Yglesias said in a statement
Wednesday.
The Pelaez sisters traveled to
Washington to meet with Florida
Sens. Marco Rubio and Bill Nelson,
and Florida Reps. David Rivera and
Frederica Wilson.
Rubio, a Republican, had expressed
support for fnding a way for Daniela
Pelaez to remain in the United States.
"I have always said that our
country needs to fgure out a way to
accommodate high academic achievers
brought here at a very young age by their
parents but who now fnd themselves
undocumented through no fault of their
own," he said in a statement last week.
"From what I've read in press accounts,
the story of Daniela Pelaez is exactly
the kind of case I have been talking
about."
The sisters and their parents came from
Colombia 14 years ago and never left
-- overstaying their tourist visas.
A Miami immigration judge ruled
last week that the two girls must be
deported to Colombia, leaving the
teenagers in shock.
Daniela, a high school senior, has a
6.7 grade point average and is at top of
her class out of 823 students, a school
administrator said.
The teenager wants to study cellular
and molecular biology for a medical
career.

southern California, a spokesman for
the California fre protection service
said.
Local homicide detective David
Martinez said a four-year-old child was
also inside the home when the cannon
went off for an unknown reason in the
early hours, but was not hurt.

another person on the contraption
shortly after midnight when it exploded.
One man has been taken to hospital
with minor injuries. A neighbour is

with superb ease.
Produced by G P Sippy and directed

Will Vidya Balan Strike Gold Again With Kahaani?
After wooing the audience with her
bold and sensuous act in The Dirty
Picture, actress Vidya Balan returns
with another intense role of a pregnant
woman in her forthcoming flm
Kahaani, which releases Friday.
Produced and directed by Sujoy Ghosh,
this will be Vidyas fourth woman-
centric flm after Ishqiya, No
One Killed Jessica and The Dirty
Picture. The flm also features Bengali
actor Parambrata Chattopadhayay and
Nawazuddin Siddiqui in prominent roles.
Kahaani tells the story of seven-
month-pregnant Vidya Bagchi, who
fies down to Kolkata in search of
her missing husband, all alone in the
festive city.
With nothing to rely on than just a
fragment from her memories about
him, Vidya begins her relentless
search for her husband Arnab Bagchi.
However, all clues seem to be in vain
when everyone tries to convince her
that her husband does not exist.
Soon she realizes that things are not
as they seem. She is determined to
unravel the truth about her husband
for herself and her unborn child even
if it puts her life in danger.
The actress made director Ghosh wait
for a long time before signing up for the
flm. Vidya didnt like script at the frst
reading, but the director kept altering it
until she fnally agreed to be a part of
it. Vidya now considers herself lucky
to be a part of the flm.
She has been aggressively promoting
the movie dressed like her character
along with a baby bump.
While some actress may fnd it hard to
sport a fake baby bump, Vidya admits
she didnt have to struggle too much
with it.
It was not tough at all. During our
college life, we all friends used to do all
the nautankis and these stand-up items.
And my favourite role would always be
of a pregnant woman. So the walk and all
came to me very naturally, said Vidya.
Music composers Vishal-Shekhar,
who are known for creating new-age,
peppy music, have gone intense in
their compositions for Kahaani. The
duo have even made megastar Amitabh
Bachchan sing Rabindra sangeet Ekla
cholo re for it.
The 69-year-old is all praise for the
duo.
This particular, world famous number
Ekla Cholo, expounding to that entire
if no one came to you on your calling,
walk alone!! And what a fabulous
song has been incorporated by Vishal-
Shekhar. Truly awesome and worthy of
all award, said Amitabh.
Vidya has become one of the most
bankable actresses ever since the
success of flms like Ishqiya, No
One Killed Jessica and most recently
The Dirty Picture.
With the flms trailers making waves,
Vidya is likely to continue her winning
streak with Kahaani.
Todays Actors Refrain From Women-
Oriented Films Anil Kapoor
Actor Anil Kapoor, who has worked
in many female-centric flms like
Beta, Lajja, Judaai and Biwi
No. 1, says most actors today do not
like being a part of flms that revolve
around women.
I see leading men are not very happy
being part of a woman-oriented flm.
I think (they are) the best flms ever
made in our country, including Mother
India, which was a female-centric
flm and is remembered till date,
the 52-year-old actor said here at the
Lavasa Womens Drive.
Anil also says that he is proud of his
association with female-centric flms.
I have worked in a lot of women-
oriented flms and I have been very
proud and honoured and I had such a
great time working in flms which were
women-oriented. I think leading men
should support and encourage women-
oriented flms, said Anil, a few days
ahead of the International Womens
Day.
Anil was recently seen in a cameo
appearance in Tom Cruises Mission
Impossible-Ghost Protocol. He is
currently working in Tezz, Race 2
and Shootout at Wadala.

Govinda To Start Production House To
Launch Daughter
Govinda, who has completed 25 years
in showbiz, is right now trying to
settle his daughters career in the flm
industry and says he will start his home
production to launch Narmada.
I am starting my production, which I
never wanted to do. Film production
is very tough. Initially when I started,
I was not successful but my wife and
family members supported me you
should not give up, Govinda, who
produced the movie Ssukh in 2005
which didnt do well, as reported.
So fnally I am starting my own
production and I will start for
Nammu (Narmada). I have a good
subject for her and I have worked very
hard on it (script), he added.
For quite some time, Narmada was
trying to get into Bollywood but things
didnt work out for her. There were
reports that she will make her debut
opposite boxing champ Vijendra Singh
in director Lovely Singhs Manchali.
Now Govinda wants to ensure that his
22-year-old daughter is launched in
such a manner that she carves a niche
for herself.
I want her to create the best with
whatever she has got. She should
become confdent in life that she should
create a correct situation for herself,
the 48-year-old said.

Tough To Be No.1 Father,
Husband: Govinda
"In real life, I think you have to remain
yourself as a father, husband and that's
too much to balance. It is very diffcult
to remain No.1 as a good husband and
father in real life. There is more hard
work in that," Govinda said.
The 48-year-old married Sunita in
1987, and has two children -- Narmada
and Yashvardan.
"Professionally, you just work. But on
a personal level, you are emotionally
attached to everything. Being a
successful son is a huge challenge.
I thank god, who gave me the
opportunity to experience it," said the
actor, who has dedicated over 25 years
of his life to Bollywood.
He also has his parents to thank.
"I have come a long way in the flm
industry. It is all because of the
blessings of my mother and father," he
said.
Govinda's frst flm "Ilzaam" released
in 1986. From then on, there was
no looking back for the actor, who
established himself with movies like
"Shola Aur Shabnam", "Aankhen",
"Saajan Chale Sasural", "Dulhe Raja"
and his "No.1" projects.
"It all started from 'Ilzaam' and there
was gradual growth in my career. I
continuously started working and
success kept coming my way. I feel
great and blessed," he said.
Prior to the 2007 comedy flm "Partner",
Govinda witnessed a prolonged period
of ill luck in flms and politics. But
even now, he prefers not to look back
at those times.
"The best thing about it is not to look
at it. If you look down at the situation,
then it makes you feel more conscious
and that does not work. (One should)
Look at the same situation to bring a
change and create a new world the way
you want," he said on a positive note.
For now, he is just reveling in his
overall success in the industry.
"There are only advantages in being
an actor. The disadvantage is that you
have to take care of yourself all the
time. But life is a learning experience.
One should not lose their balance and
understand where you have come from,
and then understand where you have
reached after such hard work," he said.
He earned the tag of the No.1 actor after a string of flms like "Coolie No.1",
"Hero No.1", "Aunty No.1", "Anari No.1" and "Beti No.1", but Govinda says it's
hard to be No. 1 when it comes to being a father or a husband.

Anil Kapoor To Make A Film
With Sonam
After making Aisha with Sonam Kapoor,
The Mission Impossible star is set to
produce yet another woman-centric flm
that might star his daughter again
Sonam Kapoor is still trying to fnd her
footing in Bollywood and another flm
with her father Anil Kapoor would only
help her! The father-daughter duo paired
up together last time for Aisha starring
Abhay Deol, which was produced by
Anil. The flm was based on the famous
British novel Emma. Aisha tanked at
the box offce but that has not deterred
the 52-year-old actor from taking his
chances and making flms on subjects
that are close to his heart. Anil has
fascination for woman centric flms
which are very few and far between in
our male-dominated industry.
Anils younger daughter Rhea is
currently busy developing the script for
his new flm. Anil believes the young
Kapoor gal is very particular about
casting and will sign her sister only
if she feels that Sonam is right for the
role. The Jhakaass actor believes that
more women-centric flms need to be
made in Bollywood. But we sincerely
hope that with his new flm the Mission
Impossible actor will not repeat the
mistakes he had made with his last
outing Aisha. The script wasnt meaty
enough and the acting was not anything
to write home about either. We hope
the producer in Anil must have fgured
that out and we hope he will give us a
better flm this time around. Anil Kapoor With Sonam

Wanderlust (PG) * * * *
Rebel Force!
Back to their roots go a forty something
couple in Wanderlust, a hilarious
adult farce from Universal Pictures
now blossoming at Empire Studio 12,
Colossus and Cineplex Odeon Theatres
around B.C.
Comedy king Judd Apatow
is at it again. As executive producer
of Wanderlust he helps helm an
uproarious comedy with a standout
cast and a feel good theme. Feeling
Groovy may well be the tagline or
punch line for this affair as director/
writer David Wain lets loose a couple
of uptight New Yorkers just itching to
get out.
Both George and Linda seem
like the perfect in love couple. Comic
foils Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston
are at their pleasing best as these
yuppies trying to eke out a living in
New York. Unfortunately housing
costs are a bit high and job security is
at a premium in The Big Apple. Funny
how the cost of living in this fnancial
hub mirror the wacky prices prevalent
in Vancouver, B.C. Come to think of
it, rising costs are confounding people
all over the world as real estate prices
soar.
Things go from bad to worse for
Linda and George so rather reluctantly
they head off to greener pastures in
Atlanta, Georgia where an equally
insane relative lives. Something funny
happens on the way to the land of Coca
Cola and the pair get side-tracked. Of
all the places to stumble onto this
otherwise normal New York couple
end up at a commune of sorts.
Nudity is the order of the day
at this modern hippie enclave and in
short order that laid-back New York
lifestyle gets put to the ultimate test
as all sorts of issues arise beween this
married duo, not the least of which is
the prospect of teaming up with other
members of this commune. Romantic
sparks fy and comical elements soar
as a free for all of hot love and wacky
situations arise. On hand for the
festivities also is Justin Theroux as
Seth, the self-imposed leader of this
laid back cult of love, Malin Akerman
as the truly giving in all respects Eva
and good old Alan Alda in the role of
founding father Carvin.
Sharp dialogue, rousing
performances, a naked winemaker and
laughs aplenty abound in Wanderlush,
a delicious decadent slice of life on the
edge where fantasy are fulflled and
loyalties put to the ultimate test. Rudd
and Aniston are perfect as the funny
couple whose marriage is on the line
when they wander into this modern day
nudist camp, a throwback to the funny
days of Peter Sellers classic A Shot in
The Dark, with similar bonafde laughs
extraordinaire.

Even the "cruel practice" of giving
electric shocks fnds a mention in the
yet-to-be released study on the practice
of corporal punishment brought out
by the National Commission for
Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).
According to the survey conducted
in 2009-10 academic year, only nine
out of 6,632 students in seven states
who were surveyed denied that they
received any kind of punishment in
schools.
The National Commission for
Protection of Child Rights report says
99.86 per cent of children experience
some kind of punishment.
NCPCR defnes corporal punishment
as physical punishment, mental
harassment and discrimination of
children causing both physical and
mental harassment.
The survey was conducted to study
the scale and magnitude of corporal
punishment in the everyday school
experiences of India's children, types
of violent punishment prevailing in
Indian schools and analyse by age
the prevalence of different types of
punishments among school children.
"99.86 per cent of children reported
experiencing one or the other kind of
punishment. As many as 81.2 per cent
of children were subject to outward
rejection by being told that they are not
capable of learning," it said.
Getting beaten by a cane, being slapped
on the cheeks, being hit on the back and
ears and getting boxed are the other
four major punishments, it said. "These
four punishments do not lag behind
much in terms of their occurrence. Out
of the total, 75 per cent reported that
they had been hit by a cane and 69 per
cent had been slapped on their cheeks,"
the survey said.
A senior NCPCR offcial said they
will be coming up with 'Guidelines for
Eliminating Corporal Punishment in
Schools'.
The guidelines include measures for
affrmative action in schools towards
positive development and positive
engagement with children.
It will also discuss creating an
environment conducive to learning
and for mechanisms and processes
to give children a voice and
engage in the process of creating a
positive environment as well as for
accountability and multi-sectoral
responsibility.

Pacheco leading the list with 10 cases.

Thousands Of Women Unite For Pongal Fest
Women in thousands are converging
in the Kerala capital on the eve of the
famed "Pongala" festival of Attukal
Bhagavathi temple, billed as the
world's largest religious convergence
of women.
A rare all-women event anywhere
in the world, the main feature of the
festival is cooking sweetened rice on
earthen pots and offering it to Goddess
Bhagavathi to invoke divine blessings.
Women along roads and by-lanes in
the wee hours to prepare the offering
and wait till the afternoon when the
'pongala' would be sanctifed by
sprinkling holy water by temple priests.
Attukal pongala has made its way to
the Guinness Book of World Records
as the largest religious congregation of
women on a single day.
The temple management claims that
around 3.2 million devotees performed
the ritual last year and the turnout is
expected to be higher this year.
According to the temple lore, the
ritual commemorates the hospitality
accorded to Tamil mythical heroine
Kannanki, herself divine, by the local
women while she was on her way to
Kodungallur in central Kerala after
avenging the treachery done to her
husband Kovalan by the Madurai king.
Majority of devotees from outside
come as groups and fnd a suitable
place to perform the ritual, while locals
provide facilities, including food and
drinking water, to those coming to
perform the ritual at their premises.
Though the festival was confned to the
temple ground during the early days,
it has now spread to every nook and
corner of the city with the increasing
number of devotees.
The temple management, state
agencies and railways have made
special arrangements for the festival.

Chinese, Indian Tourists Spend Big
Mumbai: Did you know that an Indian
tourist in Australia spend Rs 3.37
lakh on an average last year? Or that
desi travellers contributed nearly $4
billion (almost Rs 20,000 crore) to the
US economy in 2010? In a refection
of the changing global trend, tourists
from India and China are increasingly
acquiring the status of big
spenders. Data on the average sums
spent by a tourist per trip substantiates
this pattern. In Australia and South
Africa, tourists from these two Asian
countries outspend those from the US
and the UK.
Of all the countries that Indians travel
to, it is in Australia that they spend
the most per trip, followed by the US
and South Africa. Data from Down
Under is relevant as it is the country
where the average spend per tourist
is the highest, according to United
Nations World Tourism Organization
(UNWTO) statistics for 2010. Average
spend/tourist includes all expenses,
incurred on the trip like airfare, hotel
tariff, food, shopping, etc.
INDIA to build Angkor Wat replica
A HINDU trust in India's eastern state
of Bihar has begun building a replica
of Cambodia's Angkor Wat temple. A
foundation-laying ceremony for the
$20m project has been held 25km from
Bihar's capital Patna, on the banks of the
Ganges. The builders say the result will
be the world's largest Hindu temple.
The main temple of the Unesco-listed
Angkor Wat was originally Hindu
when built in the 12th Century but was
later used for Buddhist worship.
The Mahavir Mandir Trust says
construction will take 10 years. The
temple will be constructed on a 40-acre
site in Vaishali district in north Bihar.

2012 Cadillac Escalade
The 2012 Cadillac Escalade ranks 1
out of 10 Luxury Large SUVs. This
ranking is based on our analysis of 89
published reviews and test drives of the
Cadillac Escalade, and our analysis of
reliability and safety data.
The 2012 Cadillac Escalade is one of
the most recognizable luxuries large
SUVs on the market, and reviewers
love that it backs up its bold, blingtastic
looks with great performance.
The 2012 Cadillac Escalade
comes standard with lots of power,
clever interior features and fashy,
unmistakable looks, so its no wonder
it ranks at the top of its class.
Still, auto writers note that while its
easy to love the Escalade, the decision
to buy one can be diffcult. Smaller
luxury crossovers provide third rows
that are more comfortable for adults
than the Escalades, and many of these
models cost less. German and Japanese
luxury brands like Audi and Infniti
provide more technological wizardry
for a similar price. But no other SUV
has quite the same cachet as the
Cadillac Escalade.
The Cadillac Escalade does such
a good job of combining standard
features, bold looks, luxury and value
that earned our 2012 Best Luxury Full-
Size SUV for Families and 2012 Best
Luxury Large SUV for the Money
awards. Overall, if you have the money
to spend and want to stand out from
the crowd, reviewers say the Cadillac
Escalade is a great choice.
Truckies Tips for Sharing the
Road
Don't cut in front of trucks approaching
traffc lights or out on the highway.
Allow safe road space for the trucks'
size. A loaded B-Double can weigh 40
to 50 times that of the average sedan;
don't risk being hit. Simple physics
means trucks take more distance to
stop. As a pedestrian you wouldn't step
out in front of a bus, so dont do it in
your car, with a truck.
The "DO NOT OVERTAKE TURNING
VEHICLE" sign on the rear of vehicles
over 7.5 meters in length, allows them
to legally turn from the second or even
the third lane as needed to safely get
round a corner. Stay back; don't move
into the blind spot to the left and rear
of the truck cab. Please Remember -
IF YOU CAN'T SEE THE TRUCK
DRIVER, HE CANT SEE YOU.
If being passed by a truck, don't
allow your speed to increase, this
only increases the time involved. If
anything, ease up on the accelerator
and by helping the truck pass safely
you improve your own safety as well. A
fash of the headlights tells the truckie
when it's safe to move back in.
Speed limiting means no engine power
above 100 km/hr, though gravity can
push us faster downhill. A truck will
hope to be at the legal speed limit
approaching the bottom of a hill to
lessen delays to all traffc, but if slow
uphill or when overtaking, we are
doing the best we can.
Road courtesy and a bit of patience may
save your life; it could also prevent road
rage. I'd much rather a wave of thanks
than a shaken fst. Improved driver
education and awareness of heavy
vehicles, can only improve safety for
all road users.
Road positioning - A truck uses all
of its lane space, do not travel right
on the centre line, use the road width
available, to give you space between
opposing traffc. If stopped or broken
down, where possible park well clear
of the roadway. 10 centimeters past
the fog line (the unbroken line on the
left) is not safe for you or your car. Use
hazard lights and ensure headlights are
dipped or off at night, to be able to be
seen safely. Safety triangles can be a
worthwhile investment.
High beam glare contributes to night
driving fatigue. Dip when fashed, or
before reaching a crest or curve, don't
blind, then dip. Trucks mirrors are
much larger and have no anti-glare
position, dip early when behind trucks
and when overtaking, don't move to
high beam until past the trucks mirrors.
Please check headlight alignment
regularly, particularly if loaded up on
long trips and only use fog lights in
fog, they can be more of a hazard at
other times.
Caravans (RVs or Recreational
Vehicles) - When being overtaken,
maintain speed and position, only
slow when the truck has moved out to
pass. Quality mirrors, towing hitches
and good advice are priceless. A CB
or UHF radio can also be worthwhile.
WE FULLY SUPPORT THE IDEA
AND BENEFITS OF CARAVAN CB,
UHF 18 AND CB 18 and the ftting of
Caravan CB stickers on the front and
rear of your van.
For safe overtaking:
a. If you are right on the back of the
truck you have very little vision, stay
back allowing you to see better.
b. Be sure you can see enough road to
pass safely.
c. Pass quickly but sensibly.
d. Don't pull back in until you see both
the trucks headlights, this allows a safe
space.
e. Maintain your speed, don't pass and
then slow directly in front of the truck.
To take a large risk for a gain of a
couple of minutes is unsafe and often
unnecessary. PLEASE, IF YOU
CAN'T SEE, DON'T PASS.
Roundabouts - The DO NOT
OVERTAKE TURNING VEHICLE
sign applies, so please stay back.
Larger trucks often need all of the
roadway. The truck isn't racing you
into the roundabout; it is trying to ft
in, to avoid a much slower start and
movement through, which can often
further delay or stop, all traffc.
Remember, every item you buy or use
is carried on a truck at sometime. Like
you truckies want to get home safely
to their families, so let's share the road.
Danger Of Cell Phones Usage While Driving
Apart from being the latest electronic
gadgets, cell phones have become an
integral part of everyones business
and personal lives. They are used for
scheduling appointments, calling for
assistance, reporting emergencies,
and maintaining contacts with family
and offce. Our hectic lifestyles leave
us with no choice either. They have
become the primary tools to carry out
the daily mission. A popular line of cell
phone manufacturer states, Its not just
a phone, its who we are! Often, we see
people using cell phones while driving.
This saves time to a certain extent but
using a cell phone while driving can
produce a number of hazards as well.
Read on further to know the dangers of
using cell phones while driving.
Cell Phone Driving Dangers
If you use a cell phone while
driving, you are four times more
likely to have a serious accident.
Driving while conversing on a
cell phone diverts attention from
your frst responsibility: safely
maneuvering a ton or more of
rolling metal.
ICBC reports that cell phone
usage during driving is one of the
contributors to accidents caused
due to inattentive driving apart
from eating, talking and applying
make-up.
A study reveals that the risk of
having a traffc accident due to a
cell phone is the same as that while
driving drunk.
A study says that the risk of cell
phone driving is similar to the
hazard associated with driving
with a blood alcohol level at a legal
limit.
The collision rate is four times
higher than expected when the
call is made less than 15 minutes
before the accident.
To dial a number on your cell
phone, you will have to take
your eyes off the road. Hence,
you become so engrossed in the
conversation that you are no longer
focusing on driving. This way, you
are risking the safety of everyone
in the car.
Although, using a headset or a
hands-free phone instead of the
instrument itself while driving
improves safety, the danger is not
eliminated totally.
Talking on the cell phone while
driving increases both pedestrian
deaths and those of drivers and
passengers.
Young and old drivers with a cell
phone essentially face the same
risk.
Safety Measures
Give full attention to driving.
If available, use hands-free devices
and include auto answer while
driving.
Before answering or placing a call,
pull off the road and park aside.
Safety should be your frst and
foremost responsibility while
driving.

Heavyweight Championship On
Tap For Ufc 146 In Las Vegas
The two most powerful strikers in the
UFC have a date set for a showdown at
the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Heavyweight champion Junior dos
Santos (14-1 MMA, 8-0 UFC) will
make his frst title defense on May
26 in Las Vegas against top contender
Alistair Overeem (36-11 MMA, 1-0
UFC) at UFC 146. The fght will
headline the citys annual Memorial
Day weekend fght card, the UFC
offcially announced Tuesday.
Dos Santos rose to the top of the UFC
because of his unrivaled profciency in
boxing. Overeem, on the other hand,
is the heavyweight divisions best
kickboxer. He previously held titles
in K-1 and Strikeforce before signing
with the UFC last year.
Both fghters showed off their strengths
with resounding victories at the end
of last year. Dos Santos knocked out
Cain Velasquez in the UFCs frst fght
on Fox with a right hand 64 seconds
into the bout. Alistair Overeem threw
a blistering liver kick that resulted in a
TKO victory over Brock Lesnar at 2:26
of the frst round in the UFC 141 main
event.
Sports books currently list dos Santos
as a favorite at minus 170 (risking
$1.70 with $1), with Overeem coming
back at plus 140.
The UFC has revealed a handful of
other contests for UFC 146, including
a lightweight bout between Las Vegas-
based Evan Dunham (13-2 MMA,
6-2 UFC) and surging prospect Edson
Barboza (10-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) that
will likely make the pay-per-view
broadcast.
A welterweight slugfest between Dan
Hardy (23-10 MMA, 4-4 UFC) and
Duane Ludwig (21-12 MMA, 4-3
UFC) is planned, along with the return
of "The Ultimate Fighter" 14 winner
Diego Brandao (14-7 MMA, 1-0 UFC).
Brandao meets Darren Elkins (13-
2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) in featherweight
action.
Dos Santos vs. Overeem headlines Memorial Day weekend event
Roy Nelson
Las Vegas fghter welcomes Strikeforce veteran to the octagon
Roy Nelson And Antonio Silva
Scheduled To Meet At UFC 146
Roy Nelson is staying in the UFCs
heavyweight division for now.
UFC offcials confrmed that Nelson
(16-7 MMA, 3-3 UFC) will meet
Antonio Bigfoot Silva (16-3 MMA,
0-0 UFC) in heavyweight action at
UFC 146 on May 26 at the MGM
Grand Garden Arena.
The Las Vegas native looks to break
out of a recent 1-3 skid at the event
headlined by Junior dos Santos and
Alistair Overeem. Nelson recently fell
to Fabricio Werdum via unanimous
decision at UFC 143.
Following the loss, Big Country
made a bet with a friend that could
result in him trying to lose enough
weight to fght in the light heavyweight
division. Nelson promised he would
'try' to make the 205-pound weight
limit if he could add 100,000 fans on
his facebook page.
Just weighed myself (at) 264 pounds,
Nelson tweeted Monday, going to the
gym just in case I lose this bet.
The wager will have to wait until
after he welcomes Silva to the UFC.
Bigfoot comes to the UFC after a
fve-fght run in Strikeforce.
He went 3-2 in the promotion, notably
defeating Fedor Emelianenko by
second-round TKO in February 2011
as a 5-to-1 underdog. But a frst-round
knockout loss to Daniel Cormier
followed the momentous victory.
Nelson vs. Silva, which is the ninth
bout announced for UFC 146, will
likely take place on the pay-per-view
portion of the card. Tickets to the event
are scheduled to go on sale March 30.
Olympic Athletes Warned Against Hand-Shaking
The head doctor for the British
Olympic team is urging athletes to
think twice about shaking hands at the
London Games.
British Olympic Association (BOA)
chief medical offcer Ian McCurdie
says the greatest threat to athletes'
performance is illness and possible
injury.
To reduce the chance of picking up
germs, he has warned the team against
shaking hands with rivals and visiting
dignitaries.
"I think, within reason ... that's not such
a bad thing to advise," he said.
"The diffculty is when you have got
some reception and you have got a line
of 20 people that you have never met
before and you've got to shake hands
with."
He also suggested that "maybe
adopting the Japanese way and just
bowing rather than shaking hands"
might be a solution.
Mr McCurdie said the risk at a home
Games was greater than others because
British athletes would come into
contact with far more people than if
they were staying in the confnes of an
Olympic village overseas.
The idea has amused athletes and
concerned etiquette coaches.
With 10,000 competitors set to descend
on the athletes' village ahead of the
July 27 Games, following the doctor's
orders might be diffcult.
The US team has been quick to assure
it will not be warning against the
traditional greeting.
Hygiene experts say athletes just need
to use their common sense and wash
their hands.
The BOA has meanwhile defended
itself against headlines suggesting it
risked causing offence.
"It's just basic, common sense. We
are simply reminding athletes to take
commonsense measures, such as
washing their hands and using hand
foam, to reduce the risk of catching a
bug," a BOA spokeswoman said.
"It's the same type of advice many
employers give to their employees.
"As an offcial policy, we are not
advising our athletes to avoid shaking
hands with people."

Canucks Playing Their Worst Hockey Since October
On a night when the most energetic
person in a Canuck sweater was a
toddler shaking his booties to music
during timeouts, the debate about
where in the Vancouver lineup Chris
Higgins belonged seemed pretty silly.
Third line or second line? Its
ridiculous. Clearly, Higgins should
have been on the frst line because he
played with passion and had two points
against the Dallas Stars and that, amid
Tuesdays tedium, was equivalent to
Darryl Sittlers 10-point night.
The Stars beat the Canucks 5-2
because Dallas backup goalie Richard
Bachman whiffed on two shots and
Dallas shooters managed to miss the
net or the puck on three or four open-
net chances.
The Canucks have lost four of
fve games, are riding consecutive
regulation losses for the frst time since
Nov. 4 and playing their worst hockey
since dead October.
Vancouver is playing like a team
drowsily awaiting the playoffs. Dallas
played like a team desperate to make
them. Just like how the Buffalo Sabres
played Saturday when they hung on to
beat the Canucks 5-3.
The Canucks are on the wrong side of
that thin margin of error that determines
wins and losses in the National Hockey
League. If youre 10% off, chances are
you dont win. And 10% off would have
been a huge improvement Tuesday for
the Canucks.
Most of Vancouvers travel is done and
the team suddenly looks like it has been
to the moon and back. The Canucks are
trying to retain the Presidents Trophy,
want to fnish frst in the Western
Conference so that all the Game 1s and
Game 7s on this side of the league are
in their building.
But the reality is they cant fnish any
lower than the second seed.
They have the beneft of playing in
the NHLs weakest division, which
the Canucks lead by 16 points. They
might win the Northwest even if they
lose their remaining 15 games. And
the 2012 outbreak of mediocrity in the
Pacifc Division makes it unlikely the
Canucks could fall to the third seed and
face a potential second-round-playoff
opener on the road.
They are where they are, with little to
play for. At least thats how they look.
If were thinking that, then our minds
are in the wrong spot, defenceman
Aaron Rome said. [Motivation]
shouldnt be the problem. We dont
look at the standings that way. We
want to clinch frst and have home-
ice advantage throughout the playoffs.
Youve got to give Dallas credit;
theyre fghting for their playoff lives,
fghting to win their division.
Our point exactly. And the Canucks
arent. But they should be fghting for
roles, playing with urgency if only to
keep their own places in the lineup.
It is both ironic and coincidental that
this late-winter lull has occurred as
management has given the team more
depth and diversity than ever.
Coach Alain Vigneault, who preaches
a game-by-game mentality and rarely
looks behind or beyond the next game,
admitted Monday that the Canucks
position in the standings and the new
tools in his toolbox allow him to tinker
a little with his lineup in the fnal month
of the regular season. That way, hell
know what he has for playoffs and be
able to confgure his strongest lineup.
So, newcomer Zack Kassian played on
the second line Tuesday while Mason
Raymond was banished to the fourth.
And Marc-Andre Gragnani, who
couldnt make Buffalos weaker lineup,
played his third straight game for the
Canucks and again had a privileged
spot on the power play. And Higgins,
who has been effective on the second
line this season when not battling staph
infections, is in a checking role on a
third line.
Were not blaming Vigneault for
experimenting. He has a lot more
lineup options than he did a year ago
and it would be foolish for him not to
explore them.
But given the Canucks dreadful start
Saturday and carelessness Tuesday,
here are some more wrinkles he should
try: get Cory Schneider back in goal,
Chris Tanev and Andrew Alberts back
on defence, Dale Weise back on the
fourth line and Byron Bitz back from
the minors.
The Canucks are still one of the best
teams in hockey. Theyre very good at
winning. Very good, period, so theres
no need to panic.
But a little shakeup more lineup
competition and less lineup security
wouldnt be a bad thing right now.
It would certainly get everyones
attention.
It usually does in a long season,
Canuck captain Henrik Sedin said after
going pointless a sixth straight game.
Sometimes you need to get people
moved around.
Maybe even the Sedins to different
lines or Hawaii for a few days.
Vigneault has options to make his
lineup tougher or more skilled.
It doesnt seem like much of an
advantage these days, but these options
represent an upgrade from last season
when the Canucks failed to cope with
injuries or adapt to the Boston Bruins
in the Stanley Cup fnal.
Clearly, we felt we needed to bolster
the depth, Canuck assistant general
manager Laurence Gilman said before
the game. In the Stanley Cup fnal,
we more or less played with three
lines. And when we lost Dan Hamhuis
and Aaron Rome, it really hurt the
effectiveness of our defence.
We can defnitely integrate bigger,
more physical players. What it really
provides is more weapons in the arsenal
of our coach. We can play a number
of different styles and integrate a lot
of diverse components to suit Alains
game plan, and he has the fexibility to
change that game plan depending on
the opponent.
But the players must still execute it.

coveted match on Saturday, March 10.

the league.
Vancouver continues to show that it
is a soccer city with passionate fans,
said Rachel Lewis, Whitecaps FC chief
operating offcer. Last year, our fans
helped create a fantastic environment
at BC Place and we are thrilled with the
interest we have received thus far for
both our season ticket sales, as well as
single match ticket sales. We encourage

don't miss a minute of the action from
Round 2 starting this Saturday against
Montreal Impact.
This week, the Caps wrap-up their
last week of preseason training in
Vancouver after returning home from
a successful trip to Orlando, Florida.
The club participated in the Disney
World Pro Soccer Challenge, capturing
the tournament title after defeating
Toronto FC last Saturday. During
the 2012 preseason, Whitecaps FC
went undefeated with fve wins and
three draws, while outscoring their
opponents 14 to fve.
