Step 1: List at least four but no more than eight of your key strengths.

If you are having trouble, consider the skills employers want as a starting point. These will vary depending on the job you are seeking. If you are applying for a specific position, use the key words in the job description to identify the necessary skills. You will find that most skills fit into one of the following categories:
What examples do you have that fit within these categories? Draw them from your work experience, education, and personal life. Ask these questions: When have I exhibited ____________ (insert category from list above) skills? Describe the situation where you exhibited these skills. What are my major accomplishments? What skills have I worked to improve? What new skills have I learned? Still having trouble? Review the handout on Action Verbs. This should trigger examples of successes in your life.
Step 2: Divide strengths into soft (personal) and hard (technical) skills.

For example, if you are applying for a middle management position, be sure to include a synopsis of your experience, i.e., Marketing executive with 7 years experience
