SIX TIPS ON A TAX CREDIT FOR RETIREMENT SAVINGS
If you make eligible contributions to an employer-sponsored retirement plan or to an individual
retirement arrangement, you may be eligible for a tax credit, depending on your age and income.
Here are six things the IRS wants you to know about the Savers Credit:
1. Income limits The Savers Credit, formally known as the Retirement Savings Contributions Credit, applies to
individuals with a ling status and 2011 income of:
Single, married ling separately, or qualifying widow(er), with income up to $28,250
Head of Household with income up to $42,375
Married Filing Jointly, with incomes up to $56,500
2. Eligibility requirements To be eligible for the credit you must be at least 18 years of age, you cannot have been
a full-time student during the calendar year and cannot be claimed as a dependent on another persons return.
3. Credit amount If you make eligible contributions to a qualied IRA, 401(k) and certain other retirement plans,
you may be able to take a credit of up to $1,000 ($2,000 if ling jointly). The credit is a percentage of the qualify-
ing contribution amount, with the highest rate for taxpayers with the least income.
4. Distributions When guring this credit, you generally must subtract distributions you received from your retire-
ment plans from the contributions you made. This rule applies to distributions received in the two years before
the year the credit is claimed, the year the credit is claimed, and the period after the end of the credit year but
before the due date - including extensions - for ling the return for the credit year.
5. Other tax benets The Retirement Savings Contributions Credit is in addition to other tax benets you may
receive for retirement contributions. For example, most workers at these income levels may deduct all or part
of their contributions to a traditional IRA. Contributions to a regular 401(k) plan are not subject to income tax
until withdrawn from the plan.
6. Forms to use To claim the credit use Form 8880, Credit for Qualied Retirement Savings Contributions.
For more information, review IRS Publication 590, Individual Retirement Arrangements (IRAs), Publication
4703, Retirement Savings Contributions Credit, and Form 8880. Publications and forms can be downloaded at
www.irs.gov or ordered by calling 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).

NEW ANIMAL SHELTER
MANAGEMENT TO HOST
INFORMATION MEETING
From Staff Reports
BIG RAPIDS Organizers of the new
Mecosta County animal shelter will
host an information meeting this
month to answer questions and recruit
volunteers.
The meeting, hosted by Cate Arroe of
Animal Rescue Coalition of
Mecosta County, will be held at 2 p.m.
on March 18 at the Big Rapids
Department of Public Safety building,
located at 435 N. Michigan Ave.
in Big Rapids.
Animal Rescue Coalition of Mecosta
County entered into an agreement
with Mecosta County on March 1 to
provide animal shelter services for
ve years. The county is providing the
organization with $50,000 up
front for building expenses and it will
have an annual budget of
$55,000. Arroe plans to build a 2,800-
square-foot shelter on three
acres in Green Township to house
roughly 35 cats and 35 dogs.
We would like anybody who is
interested in nding out more
information about the shelter to come
to the meeting, Arroe said.
Especially people who might consider
volunteering at the shelter.
The new shelter will have one part-
time employee, the rest of the
day-to-day functions will be performed
by volunteers. About 100
volunteers will be needed at the
shelter, Arroe said. Duties will
include walking dogs, cleaning cages,
socializing with dogs and cats,
maintenance and yard work.
Anyone 18 years of age or older can
volunteer at the shelter. High
school students also can volunteer
with parental permission.
We want this to be a huge community
effort, Arroe said. We want as
many people who are interested to get
involved in this. That would be
the best thing for the community and
for the animals.
For more information about the
meeting, contact the organization at
(231) 796-2683.
SPRING CHECKLIST FOR HOME
AND LAWN CARE
MORE SHARING SERVICES
(NewsUSA) - Whether youre
considering the resale value of your
home
or are simply resigned to doing
maintenance projects to keep your
house in good condition, your lawn
and garden could certainly benet
from some TLC of the home- and
lawn-improvement variety this spring.
The exterior of your house commands
most rst impressions, and even
mild winters inict seasonal damage. If
you dont know where to
start, a home-improvement project
checklist may help. Consider the
following lawn- and garden-
maintenance tips from home and
garden
experts at HGTV and MarthaStewart.
com:
* Remove piles of dead leaves
from the lawn. Not only will your grass
grow greener, a clean lawn helps
maximize fertilizers and pesticides.
Dont make the mistake of fertilizing
your grass too early though.
April is the general benchmark; any
sooner might result in yellow
spots and dried-out patches of grass.
* Check gutters for leaks and
debris. Loose gutters cause improper
drainage, so water can collect in
basements and crawl spaces.
Downspouts should point away from
the foundation of the house and must
be clear of all debris.
* Start a roof fund. Its a good rule
of thumb to check your roof for
rotted, buckled, loose or missing
shingles after winter because summer
sun will only worsen the damage.
Since roof maintenance is so
expensive, its also smart to start a
fund before you need it.
* Remove piles of wood or debris
stacked near the home. Firewood
should be kept far away from the
foundation, and stacked 18 inches off
the ground. These preventative
measures help keep insect pests from
exploring your home.
* Dont strain yourself, and stay
hydrated. This might be the rst
time youve done any heavy lifting or
spent hours in the sun for
months. Remember to drink plenty of
uids, take breaks and stretch
your muscles. If you suffer from
backaches and muscle strains, keep
some relief like Absorbine Jr. (www.
absorbinejr.com) on hand. Its
herbal ingredients and uncanny ability
to ease muscle and back pain
make it a must-have for yard work.
* Call a professional to clean your
AC unit. Heating and cooling
experts recommend an annual
servicing since clean coils work more
efciently. When the summers blazing
heat drives you indoors, your
family will appreciate having an AC
operating at peak levels.
TIPS FOR A STRESS-FREE
COMMUTE
MORE SHARING SERVICES
(NewsUSA) - Spring is in the air. The
days are getting longer and the
temperatures are rising. Before you
know it, summer will be here along
with all the joys that come with it, like
summer vacations.
But before you dust off those suitcases
and head for the shore, you
need to put in some crucial hours at
the ol 9 to 5 and really earn
that relaxing getaway. So, in the
meantime, your friends at Firestone
Complete Auto Care would like to
leave you with some important tips to
help make your daily commute as
worry-free as possible.
* Put the cell phone down. Your
car is not a mobile ofce. Cell
phones are distracting. Designate your
time in the car as quiet
time. If you must talk on the phone,
get a headset -- as now required
by many state laws -- so that both your
hands remain on the steering
wheel.
* Stay focused on driving to protect
yourself and others on the road.
Trying to multitask while driving is
dangerous for you and the other
drivers on the road.
* Make sure you can hear auditory
driving cues. Listening to the radio
loudly can drown out car horns,
emergency sirens and bicycle bells.
* Avoid taking your eyes off the
road. Turning around to talk to
passengers and ipping through radio
channels can cause you to steer
out of your lane or miss important
visual cues.
* Check your tires often. Make
sure theyre properly inated, rotated
and otherwise in good condition. After
all, your tires are the only
things between your vehicle and the
road.
* Make sure your car is in good
condition underneath the hood. Your
Firestone Complete Auto Care service
center can carry out your
vehicles scheduled maintenance and
assist you with any problems that
come up in the interim.
* Wear comfortable attire. Before
setting off, select a pair of
comfortable driving shoes, and
remove inhibiting layers.
* Make sure the drivers seat is
adjusted to a comfortable position.
This is especially important if you
share the car with family members.
Dont forget to check your mirrors and
adjust them if necessary!
Work can be stressful enough -- dont
add to the hassle by inviting
distractions behind the wheel. Keep
your commute stress-free, and
youll nd that those summer plans of
yours will be here before you
know it. Safe travels!
ENCOURAGE READING WITH
TIPS FROM DR. SEUSS
(NewsUSA) - The rst nine years of a
childs life are the most
critical for learning how to read. In fact,
national research
estimates that 74 percent of poor
readers who arent helped before age
nine will continue having difculties in
high school, and only two
percent will go on to complete a four-
year degree.
Besides being the foundation of
communication and most kinds of
classroom-based learning, reading
skills give children a condence
and advantage that benets them long
after they nish school. And
for those who actually enjoy reading?
The rewards are endless, says
Richard Bavaria, Ph.D. (Dr. Rick) from
tutoring service and education
expert, Sylvan Learning.
To encourage parents to renew their
efforts to get children and young
adults interested in reading, the
experts at Sylvan are taking a few
pages out of Dr. Seusss many dog-
eared books. Check out these
Seuss-inspired reading tips for the
could-be avid readers in your
family.
Oh say, can you say? Reading aloud
with your children is just as vital
as you always heard. For toddlers and
young kids, reading aloud with
exaggerated voices and silly noises
helps keep them interested and
excited. For older children and young
adults, getting them to read
aloud builds condence in their
reading abilities.
One book, two books, red books, blue
books. Most people love
collecting valued items, children
included. Support efforts to create
their own library, and help them nd
new books to add to the
collection. Turn trips to the grocery
store or Goodwill into a
treasure hunt for new books.
And to think that you saw that word on
Mulberry Street. Car rides are
ideal times to learn new words
because you and your kids are being
bombarded with new phrases and
vocabulary around every curve. From
billboards to street signs, new words
are everywhere!
Oh, the places youll go! Let the
Internet guide you. If your
nine-year-old refuses to read anything
other than horse books, what
better place to nd a reading list of
age-appropriate horse books?
Interactive websites like Book
Adventure -- www.bookadventure.com
--
allow kids to choose their own books
and take short quizzes for
prizes.
My book... By me myself. Challenge
your kids by asking them to write
their own stories with their own
illustrations. It increases their
familiarity with words and encourages
creativity.

and getting bullied for lunch
money are gone. Now, new threats
have emerged around cell phone use.
According to a survey performed by
Internet monitoring software
company SpectorSoft, sexting is
parents primary concern during the
school season.
Absolutely, said Rebecca Hagelin, a
parent who uses SpectorSoft to
track her three teenagers. Its
allowed my children to enjoy all the
benets the latest technology has to
offer them, and its allowed me
to protect them from the dangers of
some of the new technology, she
said. Its a win-win.
Smartphones with advanced Internet
capabilities have greatly increased
parental fears about cyberbullies,
online predators, sexting and the
exchange of inappropriate messages
and pictures.
SpectorSoft reports that 82 percent of
all families surveyed contain
at least one child who has a
smartphone. Even if teachers and
school
faculty can keep students off their
phones during school hours, who
protects them after school?
Bryan Bowers, author of Keep Your
Family Safe Online, said that the
survey proves parents are starting to
gain greater awareness of what
their children are actually up to on
their phones and online. So many
children have smartphones, and this
tells me parents are starting to
get the idea that these devices can be
a problem for children, Bowers
said. They are starting to see the
reality of what is out there.
SpectorSoft, focused on monitoring
products for children since their
inception in 1998, has released
eBlaster Mobile for Android and
BlackBerry phones. This software
keeps track of all activity on these
smartphones by monitoring and
recording text messages, calls and
Internet activity and then sending that
information to the parent. It
also has Geofencing capabilities to
enable parents to better
understand the whereabouts of their
children through their mobile
devices. Parents can create
electronic location boundaries -- or
fences -- that trigger an alert
notication when their child enters
or exits a pre-dened area with their
mobile device.
eBlaster is designed for maximum
parental convenience and child
safety. The software can be
downloaded from its website,
www.spectorsoft.com, and then
managed from any remote location.
Plus,
it has a GPS function reporting the
exact location of the phone in the
event of emergencies.
TIPS TO BREEZE THROUGH SPRING
CLEANING
MORE SHARING SERVICES
(NewsUSA) - Spring heralds a
season of fresh starts and growth
-- and
what better way to start anew than
with a little spring cleaning?
Taking the time to get organized can
make all the difference -- and it
can make the most cluttered closets
and dirtiest corners a breeze to
clean. With the right tools in hand,
organizing any messy space
becomes a mangeable task. You can
save time and money by getting
cleaning supplies, like dusters,
sponges and automated air
fresheners,
at places like Dollar General.
Still dont know where to start? Try
these spring-cleaning tips:
* Cover the basics. Take
inventory of your cleaning supplies.
Some
must-haves are mops, brooms,
sponges, paper towels, trash bags,
disinfectant wipes and bathroom-
specic supplies. Make a list of what
you need so you can get it all in one
shopping trip. Many basic and
speciality cleaning products are now
available online. For the
ultimate in convenience, shop online
at www.dollargeneral.com.
* Tackle the clutter in steps.
Spring cleaning can be daunting, so
take small steps and approach
spaces one at a time. Strive to nd
everything a permanent home. Create
donate and trash piles for
items you no longer use or need.
* Use organizing tools. Over-the-
door mesh shoe racks are great for
storing all kinds of winter accessories
-- hats, gloves, scarves and
coats. Get some sturdy hooks for
purses, backpacks and other
accessories, and relish the feeling of
a clean closet.
* Revitalize your laundry room.
Put a stop to the mountain of dirty
clothes that grows every week by
getting each family member a laundry
basket. If clothing doesnt make it into
their bin, its not getting
washed. Keep your laundry room
stocked with detergent, bleach and
stain remover.
* Store items in plastic storage
containers. Some winter items will be
used until the early days of summer,
others wont make an appearance
until next year. A variety of
belongings can be stored in plastic
containers to keep them organized
and out of the way.
