News Release from: Oregon National Guard NORTH AMERICAN AEROSPACE DEFENSE COMMAND TO TRACK SANTA CLAUS ON CHRISTMAS EVE Thanks to Capt Arthur Woodgate of Group III/ Texas Wing for the links and info on how to track Santa using the power and might of NORAD. Major Carrales The North American Aerospace Defense Command - NORAD - will track the annual journey of Santa Claus on Christmas Eve as it continues a tradition born more than fifty years ago. Kids of all ages can see Santa's progress around the world by visiting the NORAD Track's Santa website at: www.noradsanta.org "The NTS program began in 1955 when an errant phone call was made to NORAD's predecessor, the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) Operations Center in Colorado Springs, Colo," said Michael Perini, NORAD Director of Public Affairs. " The call was from a local child who dialed a misprinted telephone number in a local newspaper advertisement, " Perini said. Although the wrong number, the commander who answered the phone that night gave the youngster the information he requested ....thus the tradition of NORAD tracking Santa began. The program has grown immensely since it was first presented on the Internet in 1998. "In 2006, the Web site received a whopping 941 million hits from 210 countries and territories, " Perini said. In addition, the NTS Operations Center, occupied by 756 volunteers on Christmas Eve, answered nearly 65,000 phone calls and 96,000 emails from children around the world. The Web site features the history of the program, information on how NORAD tracks Santa and interactive games. On December 24, beginning at 2:00 a.m. Mountain Standard Time (4 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, 9 a.m. Greenwich Mean Time), the Web site will feature a minute-by-minuteupdate on Santa's travels around the world. All of this information is available in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish.

Through the Air Over South Texas A History of THE ALMANAC

By Major Joe Ely Carrales, CAP Premont, Texas Unit History?! I write the words with a since of bitter-sweet remembrance. So much of our unit history is lost to the yellowed pages of the passage of the forgotten past, a cause to hang a head low. However, through the marvels of this ALMANAC, the modern history of this unit is documented for the ages. Somewhat strangely, Through the Air Over South Texas has underAn early masthead for The Almanac seen on the front cover. gone an evolution over the years. Many of these machinations have their origin in long before many of the current unit were even members. To reflect on that development is most fascinating, I am glad I was e-mailed for a history of the Almanac in that it will serve as a reflection of our units most recent history. The original idea for an Almanac Type Squadron/Group newsletter has it origin in 1999. At that time, the Corpus Christi Comp Squadron was part of Group III/Texas Wing (not to be confused with the post 2005 Group III of which Capt Arthur Woodgate is presently the Public Affairs Officer) and was commanded by then Major Mucio Garza. It was a time when most CAP Officers were just flirting with the internet. News was hard to get out. Then 2d Lt Joe Ely Carrales was appointed as an Assistant Public Affairs Officer under then 1st Lt Gloria Atchisson. Structures in Group III/Texas Wing were about to change. Longtime Group Commander Maj Robert Middleton was about to step down. The ranking CAP Officer was Maj. Mucio Garza, who was shortly thereafter promoted to Lt Col. He ascended to command of that Group. He assigned the position of GROUP Public Affairs Officer to, by then, 1st Lt Joe Ely Carrales effective 19 February 2000. Capt Mario Reyes formerly of Hawaii then assumed command of the Corpus Christi Comp Squadron. One feature of late 20th Century Civil Air Patrol activities in South Texas was that most persons in a given unit knew little to nothing about the activities of neighboring units. In an effort to alleviate that situation, 1st Lt Carrales attempted the first incarnation of THE ALMANAC styled with the familiar THROUGH THE AIR OVER SOUTH TEXAS moniker. The First Issue was for March 2000 and covered a few events and promotions. It differed in many ways from the current incarnation mostly in distribution and form. It was made using an earlier MSWord program dividing the publication into two columns with a few photos. It was normally only two pages (one leaf front and back) and was very CORPUS-CENTRIC. The reason for that was a situation that 1st Lt Estelle Kelly can well empathize with during here early days as Group V PAO. That being that many units did not have active PAOs nor a mechanism by which to send news to a Group source. This was not unexpected in a time when the national marketing A July 2000 copy of the Group III/ phrase was CAP: Americas best Kept Secret. So, all available news was Texas Wing Newsletter, the grandfacollected and prepared into one color printout and ten Xerox copies that were ther of The Almanac. mailed via the postal service to the units of Group III/Texas Wing. Most copies of this publication were either lost or destroyed and only a few are currently in the possession of the unit. The extra copies were compiled and donated to the South Texas Archives on the campus of Texas A&M University-Kingsville preserving at least a fraction of CAP history for all historians to study. Then 1st Lt Carrales remained the Group III/Texas Wing PAO when Lt Col M. Garza passed the baton to then Major Chris Bujanos of Brownsville. The Group Publication came to and end when, by then, Capt Joe Ely Carrales assumed command of the Corpus Christi Comp Squadron following Capt John Rios request to tend to personal matters. The second element, the actual ALMANAC portion, was born of the need for Capt Carrales to compile news and information in one place as an organizational tool of the squadron. Prior to this, Capt Rios and Capt Carrales would send strings of e-mail to various list-serves. The CC-CAP list was created by 2d Lt Ruben Radar Rodriguez. The number of e-mails, sometime many daily reflecting WING and GROUP communications, proved to be more of a nuisance than a help. Continued on page 6

Continued from page 5: Through the Air Over South Texas A History of THE ALMANAC To stop this unfortunate situation, Capt Carrales began to compile, starting 4 November 2002, all information not marked for immediate disbursal into a rather long e-mail entitled Weekly South Texas CAP Almanac. The initial e-mail of Volume 1, Issue 1 is lost to history, however, Capt Carrales began to print out copies of said e-mail. These were then stapled to the right inside of a manila folder (with the Monthly Membership List and/or other national/wing leaflet stapled to the left) to allow Capt Carrales a low tech PDA or what we would call an palm pilot. This earliest issue contained the same sort of news items that one would expect today. An ELT mission of Bishop Municipal Airport on 3 November 2002 that involved Capt Carrales, Capt Fidel Alvarado and 1st Lt Jerry Lunceford. Capt Alvarado wrote a detailed account that was amended to the end of the letter. It was mission number 02-M-2606, Incident Commander was Maj. Chris Bujanos. It terminated at 1730, At which time Maj. Bujanos was informed. There was to be a SARex at Kleberg Co. Airport on 8-10 November 2002, this was an annual activity that then Group III/Texas Wing would hold. Weather forecasts of that weeks window and reports of the fields condition were documented. It was to be Party Cloudy with a 10% chance of rain, lows highs 78-79 degrees and lows 57-59 degrees. All Participants were to bring mosquito repellant. A change of Command ceremony for Capt Carrales was to take place at that SARex, it would never transpire. That issue also reported the creation of the CAP RANK of MAJOR GENERAL. General John P. Jumper announced that the position of National Commander would increase to Major General and the National Vice Commander would increase of Colonel to Brigadier General effective 1 December 2002, the 61st anniversary of CAP. In a related reported story Col Thomas Todd was promoted to Region Commander effective November 2002. The e-mail ended with the reporting of new Texas Cadet Internet Magazine at TexasCadet.org and the next meeting agenda. Subsequent issue reported on similar items, but also including upcoming schools for CAP Officers and Cadets, unit staff positions, uniform phase outs, items from Old Lincoln County and items related to unit activities. This continued until Mid-Year 2003, copies of said materials only exist until February that year. 2004 and 2005 are lost to history, but there was lots happening there worthy of recovery. Things all oer the Texas Wing changed greatly in that period. The units numbers were always in a state of flux, the TEXAS WING CONFERENCE came to Corpus Christi, The TEXAS WINGs Group Structure was consolidated and Group III/Texas Wing was no more. It had merged with Group 19, the San Antonio Area. We now had a new Group Commander, Lt Col Eddy Billman. The unit went without any sort of Newsletter until the Weekly South Texas CAP Almanac was restarted with Vol. 1 Issue 1 dated 3 January 2006. Copies were printed of many of these and an on line copy exists at Major Carrales Myspace blog. It begins I am pleased to announce the return of the Weekly South Texas CAP Almanac, this will be a compilation of Civil Air Patrol issues for people of South Texas CAP units and other interested parties. All information is declassified and useful for members and potential members of this and other units. -Capt. J.E. Carrales, CAP It contains information of unit strength via attendance, information on the Fire Watches of 2006 and information on how CAP Officers can get a ramp pass. This was merely a continuation, in form and substance, of the earlier version. Basically, a rather long email of complied information with some commentary and an occasional written story. This was extremely user unfriendly, and later the ALMANAC would be divided by Specialty Track Number to best allow interested persons to scroll down to sections that concerned them. Copies of the 2006 versions, for the most part, are available from January to late August 2006 and will make possible a new 2008 segment entitled: This WEEK in CC-CAP History. History would have basically remain unchanged of not for the accidental interference of Lt Col Eddy Billman. Prior to the 2006 CC-CAP Holiday Banquet, Capt Carrales asked Lt Col Billman for an address that could be printed and read at said event. Lt Col Billman send it in PDF form. At the bottom of said Adobe PFD form was a link to a free PDF generator. This allowed for any publication to be produced in a format like MircoSoft Publisher The first modern issue of THE ALMANAC labeled VOL. 2, or Word and be printed as a PDF. This greatly reduced the size of the document and now Issue 1 dated 25 December meant that regular pictures and formatting could be inserted. The result...voila, an instant 2007 somewhat professional looking squadron publication that could be run like a newsmagazine instead of a never ending e-mail. The next generation of the ALMANAC was born. I was given the name of the old GROUP III/ Texas Wing Publication and was first published, as Volume 2, Issue 1 on 25 December 2006 with the lead story exclaiming Happy Holidays in bright festive colors. Continued on Page 7 6

Continued from page 6-Through the Air Over South Texas A History of THE ALMANAC Two cadets to the Texas Wing Winter Encampment, Cadets Christopher Villarreal and Philip Lozano. These were the first two cadets to attend a regular encampment. The unit welcomed Kelly Harlan and B. Sam Kimbrell to the fold and Lt Col Eddy Billman discussed the changes in the Skills Evaluator Program via a letter. The issue ended with a citation of the units goals which included qualifying all pilots as Form 5 and conducting Basic Communications User Training at Corpus Christi. And so began the collected documentation of the Corpus Christi Comp Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol. Units with newsletters have an fortunate side effect, they now leave an historical trace. They collect the positives and negatives for later analysis. Positive things are fanned and The Almanac depends on comments and feedback to improved, negative things are mitigated and improved. The best serve you. (above) In June, a suggestion to crewider the circulation, the greater change others can lend as- ate a table of contents resulted in a redesign that sistance and advice. greatly improved the look and read of The Almanac. Expect in 2008 features that reflect on unit history, feedback and installments designed to promote the programs of CAP from safety to flight, from cadet programs to finance. If you are a regular reader of this Almanac, please, suggest new directions, draft articles and provide feedback. This is a living document, and you are its lifeblood. -Semper Vigilans

Small Get Together held in Kingsville

By Major Joe Ely Carrales, CAP Kingsville, Texas This will be an extremely Kingsville heavy issue of The Almanac, mostly because the last activities of 2007 occurred there. On 20 December 2007, Cadets and CAP Officers of the Corpus Christi Comp Squadrons Brahma Cadet Flight and Corpus Christi Cadet Flight held a small party in celebration of the years activity. This was an extension of the 2007 Corpus Christi Comp Squadron Holiday Banquet. Several cadets from Kingsville were unable to attend the Corpus Christi Meeting due to travel and funding, said Major Joe Ely Carrales so it was decided that a small get together would be planned at the local Pizza Parlor es(Left to Right) Cadet Robert Beal, Cadet Joshua Mortablishment on King Street in Kingsville. Color Guard activities explored at Kingsville, To be Unit-Wide in 2008

By Major Joe Ely Carrales, CAP Kingsville, Texas The call comes more often than one would think. Major Carrales, the voice will say both proud and stressed, we need a color guard to present the colors in a _________________. You name it to fill that blank; a parade, a formal dinner a football game. And each time I have to explain that we are not ready. The fact has been that we have not been. We have lacked the materials and personnel to accomplish or even start the process of learning the necessary drill and protocol. At the start of 2007, Capt Sandy Phelps purchased several flag harnesses and donated them to the unit. These harnesses laid unopened and dust covered until 20 December 2007. At the last meeting of the year for any element of the Corpus Christi Comp Squadron Major Carrales and Cadet Senior Airman Bryce Nix took a look at those harnesses and pondered what some might call the unthinkable. Lets give it a try, said Major Carrales, Cadets M. Beal, R. Beal, J. Morris and B Nix forum up a What have we got to loose. Brahma Cadet Squadron Color Guard for the first time at With that, the packets were opened, for the CAP Station Kingsville. first time. The Cadets and CAP Officers brainstormed and looked up some information on what was needed. Cadet Senior Airman Michael Beal, a member of the H.M. King Brahma Battalion of JROTC assumed command of the four assembled cadets. They grabbed the colors from their usual spots and unfurled them outside. Cadet Airman Robert Beal, Cadet Airman Joshua Morris and Cadet Senior Airman Bryce Nix joined Cadet Senior Airman Beal is forming up the first efforts at marching with the colors. Also present was Cadet Senior Airman Steven Johnson who critiqued the marching and ceremony of the color guard. The activity was simple, make it happen and establish basics. For lack of a pair of parade rifles, cadets used two tubes (donated...rescued from the trash...by the Memorial Middle School office staff for building rockets) and an old less than repaired parade rifle left over from the Glory Days of the 1990s. They practiced the manual of arms, discussed proper placement and respect for the colors. They also practiced marching and the wheel around the Memorial Middle School back parking lot. Yes, it was sort of rag-tag said Major J.E. Carrales, But its a start. And We did it. From there we can, with the help of others, build it into a very presentable activity. The unit needs help in every way imaginable. From instruction on the proper placement of the colors to practice parade rifles. We will be buying the needed materials in stages and making due until we are fully equipped. continued Major Carrales, Cadets in Corpus Proper will also learn these The Color Guard practices for the day they can moves. shine.
