He was then chosen from a pool of more than 28,000 applications to represent Illinois as an Olympic torchbearer. Only 5 percent of the torchbearers are from foreign countries, Tom noted, as one of only 18 to 20 individual torchbearers from the United States. I am excited to represent my country. Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung also held their own nomination campaigns. LOCOG had tens of thousands of nominations. The committee was delighted and moved by the inspiring stories put forward. With an average of 11 nominations for every torchbearer place, the selection panels were presented with some very difficult decisions. The Holiday Inn Express in Oswego is part of the InterContinental Group in charge of housing for the 2012 Summer Olympics. As such, hotel management was able to nominate people who go above and beyond in their service. heralds were summoned to travel throughout Greece to announce the Games, declaring a sacred truce for the duration. Toms torch-bearing training kicks off this week as he begins running 4 miles a day. His actual relay as torchbearer will be about 300 yards or the length of three football fields. The relay begins May 18. Toms leg of the relay is tentatively scheduled for May 23, 2012, as he runs between Bristol and Chiseldon. The Olympic torch will be carried to within ten miles of 95% of the United Kingdom population. The torch will travel for 70 days as it visits every county of the UK, every Local Authority area in Northern Ireland and Scotland, and every Borough in London. Toms community service includes his volunteer work with Big Brothers Big Sisters (10 years), the Rotary Club, and the Addictions class he teachers at Provena. However, Toms service began many years ago with two years of service as a VISTA in Americorps (national volunteer service program to fight poverty) organization where he served a Native American reservation in Utah. As a 2012 torchbearer, Tom joins in an ancient tradition. 8,000 inspirational people across the UK will carry the Olympic Flame during the Torch Relay, The Olympic Torchbearer site states. Their personal stories will have the power to inspire millions of people watching around the world. The Torch and Relay were important elements of the cultural festivals surrounding the original Olympic Games of Ancient Greece. Mayor Pradel is proud of his city, his staff, his community, local businesses, and this pride shines in his demeanor as he talks about his town and walks the walk of supporting neighborhood needs. Yet, this mayor also manages to walk the fine line of striving for fiscal responsibility, pursuing economic development, and comforting the crestfallen when hardships hit the community. Fresh off his latest heart tuneup at Edward Hospital, Mayor Pradel reflected on the past year and looks forward to the new fiscal year

beginning in May, This has been a good year for us. The Mayor sees major changes and objectives for 2012. One change will be the search for a new police chief for the accredited police department as David Dial retires. The City will conduct an internal search first before resorting to a nationwide hiring search. Pradel is proud of Napervilles low crime rate, the lowest of any U.S. city with more than 100,000 residents. Fine-tuning online communication to better serve the residents and new advances in electrical service and the smart grid are other projects as the City moves forward. Residents will be able to view the web to learn when brush pickup or leaf collection will be conducted in their neighborhoods. Meanwhile, the City looks forward to finishing its smart grid in October, using an $11 million matching federal grant. Other 2012 projects include economic development with the Naperville Development Partnership and the Visitors Bureau, the opening of the Marriott Hotel with its special features, and celebrating milestones like North Central Colleges 150th anniversary and 25 years for NCTV. As Mayor Pradel prepares for the new fiscal year, he says he would like to see who our allies are for the next year. Indeed, the mayors working relationships extend beyond neighbors and local businesses to include his counterparts in Joliet, Aurora, and Bolingbrook on transportation, traffic, and development issues. The mayors were in it together attitude helps him keep issues in perspective. Were just working hard to balance the budget, Pradel said. Were not above anyone. Mayor Pradel is excited about development in the downtown region as a couple new pizza joints open up, Edward Hospital expands (and becomes Napervilles largest

employer), and business develops in the Van Buren/Main Street struggling location. Though the economic downturn hit Naperville, Mayor Pradel, the city manager, and the city council worked hard to minimize layoffs. Weve hired a lot of people back, Pradel said. Were constantly watching for the best buy for the tax dollar while trying to keep our services great all the time. Once voted the suburbs sexiest mayor, Pradel continues to be approachable. Not arrogant about his own accomplishments, his eyes twinkle as he admits, I kinda brag about our quaint downtown. As Naperville enters its new fiscal year, residents, businesses, civic organizations, and neighboring towns and cities can all expect continued service with a smile from Napervilles mayor and his staff.

picture of thousands of crosses on a beach. That picture just grabbed me emotionally and I knew I had to go there. Not long afterwards I made my way to Santa Monica, California, to help set up the Arlington West Project, which honors our troops who have died in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. That experience unleashed in me an incredible drive to do more. Since that time I have created a number of projects in which our community has worked together toward a common goal. My passion for my latest project, The Warrior Dog Project, was ignited in much the same way.one picture of a dog jumping out of an airplane with his handler. Well, when I saw that picture I was hooked! Heres what I learned: These four-legged warriors save three to five of our troops lives each day! Despite the millions the government has spent on hightech devices, they cant compete with the 85% bomb detection success rate of the MWDs (Military Working Dogs). And, these brave canines need special gear (not supplied by the government) in order to do their jobs at peak performance. I also learned that sadly, when these dogs retire, if they are deemed nonadoptable because of aggression or post traumatic stress disorder, they are euthanized! Doesnt that just break your heart? When I was talking to one of my friends, it got me to thinking about just how much a soldiers life is worth. I wondered if it was worth giving up coffee for a week, or going without dinner with a friend once in a while, or having my nails done? It could be any number of things we might think are important to us personally. Just exactly what would I do if I could actually save just one life? That was a tough question and, to be honest, it made me squirm more than a little. But, heres what its worth to me personally (and I only wish I could do more): Its worth giving 400 hours, (or 24,000 minutes, or 1,440,000 seconds) of my time in order to create a project that I hope will garner community support with money and help. Its worth giving up two of my much-needed extra paychecks to buy things needed to begin the project, because its hard to wait for people to step up to the plate when your heart and mind tell you that you must lead the way. I knew that if I created a project and gathered the support of many who feel like me, that all of us together could accomplish something phenomenal! I believe we can all make a difference, and so Ive created The

Warrior Dog Project seeks your help

By Pat Gavros

Less than a year ago when I began my personal 52-Week Challenge to Patriotism I never imagined all of the incredible community support I would receive as each project was created. After my 9/11 Empty Shoe Memorial, I was inundated with emails and calls from so many people that I began to ask myself why. The widespread media interest and coverage helped me understand the impact this had on our community. People were connecting to their patriotic action button. Youve probably heard the quotation, A Journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. My patriotic journey is kind of like that. It began with one email that had a

Warrior Dog Project to help do two very important things: First, the Warrior Dog Project is going to help buy much needed equipment for these brave canines. Each kit purchased contains a Chilly Vest that keeps the dogs from overheating in the searing desert heat. Doggles or goggles will protect their eyes as the constant blowing sand is a serious problem. Because the temperatures reach well over 100 degrees, they also need Mutt Luks so the sensitive pads on their feet dont burn. Finally, when theyre being deployed from helicopters or airplanes, they need Mutt Muffs for ear protection. This keeps them calm while waiting for deployment so when they reach the ground theyre at peak performance; ready to protect and save more of our soldiers lives. Secondly, when these dogs retire from duty, they are given temperament tests for aggression and other issues that might cause them to be deemed non-adoptable, which means they are not suitable to live in a regular family environment. Unless a suitable placement can be found, they will be euthanized. This is where Sav-A-Vet.org comes in. Danny Scheurer, an Iraq War veteran, who was injured in Iraq and received a Purple Heart, started an incredible mission five years ago. He set about to acquire these nonadoptable heroes and then pair them with a disabled veteran who, in exchange for caring for these brave canines, receives a place to live. What an incredibly noble mission. Our successful event will help further this worthy cause. Many Ive spoken with have remarked that this will be my biggest project ever. I agree, and you have my personal commitment that I will use all of my considerable resources to make that happen. I would like to share with you some portions of correspondence between my friend, Mike Dowling, and myself because it will show just how much this means to our troops! Mike is the author of Sergeant Rex. Hes a Marine veteran who was one of the first 12 dog teams to be deployed to Iraq. Hes an author, producer, actor, and veterans advocate. _______________________________ Dear Pat - WOW, I guess I will start by saying thank you so much for EVERYTHING that you do. It really does mean a lot to all of us veterans and, those currently still serving, to know people like you are out there bringing awareness to the troops and

of course, the military dog teams... This event sounds amazing and only a very special person can pull something like this off, and it sounds like you are that kind of person. So again, thank you for everything that you do. -------------------------Dear Mike - Im getting more excited every day about the Warrior Dog Project. Its been a terrible week for our troopsespecially the Marines. Im sorry for your loss because I know all of you are family. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. We have a young, local Marine who

lost both of his legs and part of his hand in late October. Kyle Moser is a brave American who will have a long road to recoveryI truly believe if there had been a dog team with their patrol that day, this wouldnt have happened. Dear Pat - When I enlisted in the Marine Corps, I wasnt even aware the military used dogs. Thanks to the Warrior Dog Project, more people will understand the critical role military working dog teams play and how to support them. If you love

dogs and you love to support our troops, then you will love the Warrior Dog Project. Semper Fi Thoughts and prayers to Kyle Moser. _________________________ My mission is To educate and inspire individuals to become advocates for these warrior dogs. There are many ways that we can, on a continuing basis, support the dogs and their handlers while deployed and after theyve served their country. Ive awakened each night for the past several weeks thinking about this

project and what I can do to make it better. The fact is, one person can only lead the way. People must care enough to move from apathy to interest, and then to action. We cant sit on the sidelines waiting to see who else is going to join in. Some of us must be the first platoon hitting the beach before the others come ashore so to speak. I hope that our community will join in now. People always wonder what they can do. There are numerous ways that would take considerably less than 400 hours! You could: Go to our website at www.warriordog.co and sign our guest book, make a donation (remembering all of those dollars really add up). Go to Friend of Military Working Dogs on Facebook and click the LIKE button. Email all of your friends about the project and include the link (remember, promoting the sites and events is important). Contact us to offer your assistance with the project - we need help NOW because it takes an incredible amount of effort to get these projects off the ground. Sponsor us. The minimum

sponsorship is $100.00 but you could do it as a business, or a club, or a group of friends, or a family, etc! And, as always, I can be contacted at: branthonypublishing@yahoo. com with any questions, or you may call and leave a message at 630-554-5440.

this amenity is like no other that Kendall County can offer. The Equestrian Centers mission is to connect environmental stewardship with the equestrian, educational and recreational opportunities it provides to County residents. Ellis Equestrian Center strives to reach the surrounding communities so every household can embrace one or more concepts of horse or environmental stewardship to use in their own lives. One tool the Center uses is its horses, which teach children and adults how conservation can be recreational as well as a regeneration of the environment we live in. Part of the care of the horse is the care of its environment. Every dollar and hour that is donated or paid to the Equestrian Center will go back into making the Center sustainable as well as improve recreational and educational activities. The Center focuses on the community at large as well as catering to horse owners. In 2009, Ellis started paid programming that introduces horses and their environment to children and adults. Also The first year, the programs were supplemented with facility rentals, open arena times and fees, hay sales, and special event rental of the Ellis estate house. The current facilities have an architecturally beautiful house that is used for rental and seminar requests. penetrations in the exterior, replacing worn weather stripping around doors and windows, and if you have older home with older windows, reglazing them will also help reduce drafts. The Foundation Sill Plate We have talked about this area some in a past article, but this area is so important I want to go over it again if you have a basement this is not to difficult to get to as long as you dont have a finished drywall ceiling, if you have a crawl space it will be more difficult. At the top of the concrete there is a wood sill is bolted to the foundation wall, visually inspect and feel around with your hand for air leaks, or if you see a lot of dirt around the sill this is an indicator of air leakage not to mention you could have bugs and mice entering the house in these areas, clean the area use caulk and foam insulation to seal. Interior Wall Top Plates When interior walls are constructed, the top plate sides are exposed in the attic. These areas can leak a lot of air into you attic. Go into the attic, move the insulation to find the top plate seal. Use high-quality caulk along the entire length of both sides of the plate. This will stop the air from escaping into the attic. Remember, caulking around the exterior, along with seasonal maintenance, will go a long way to reducing you energy bills. As always, you should use common sense and proper safety equipment. If you are not sure about something, consult a professional.

the Colts history book, even though his predecessor (Johnny Unitas) was pretty good. Always there ready to practice, Manning arrived ready to go and give it his best on every down, every day, including practice. Fourteen years later, he walks away. Teaming with Tony Dungy, Manning led the Colts to two Super Bowls, winning in 2007 against the Bears, and captured four MVP awards. He raised the level of play in his teammate through his work ethic, and in his 14 years, he went from 1998 to 2010 playing in every preseason, regular season, and post-season game expect for two, and went on to play a streak of 187 consecutive games. With his low key approach and enthusiasm for the game, Peyton Manning reminds this reporter of a longago time when men like Leo Gehrig and Cal Ripken were the rule in how to be a great sportsman and community example. Now that the chapter for Peyton has been closed, it is sad to see one of the greats ending his time with his only team in this fashion. In the eyes of the Colts, 35, and suffering a neck injury is an issue, especially because the quarterback position depends on ones ability to stay healthy. However, sometimes even now it really is okay to allow a player to exit with some dignity and honor. The Colts ownership made their choice, and now their loss is another teams gain. Vowing to play again, look for this quarterback to return to the huddle and engineer yet one more comeback!

foundation for helping the special needs child physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually. Physical benefits are vast.Yoga provides increased body awareness and improves basic motor skills. It betters flexibility, strength, coordination, and balance. Mental benefits through breath and relaxation work (combined with calming music therapy) include a heightened concentration level, an increase of calmness, a slowing down of hyperactivity, and more balanced emotions. Social benefits stem from learning to take turns in a group setting, following instructions, and communicating with others. The objective of a yoga class for special needs children is to increase the childs sense of self. This helps them to feel happier, not only about themselves, but about life in general. A wonderful by-product of this goal is a greater level of self-confidence for the child. The learning environment should be safe, calm, soothing, and fun. When the children are having fun doing yoga, everyone is successful.

Heroes get remembered but Legends never Die!

By Tim Flowers

Tim Flowers pays tribute to Peyton Manning.

The question this month will be: will the Bulls continue to live or die by the jump shot and long-range shooting? Looking ahead, the Bulls need to get back to getting to the foul line and being aggressive in driving to the hoop! The Bulls look healthy with some minor bumps, and hit a difficult road trip at the end of the month. Look for the team to rely more on Boozer and Noah to help take the pressure off Rose!

The end of an era has taken shape in Indianapolis with the Colts releasing their record-setting quarterback Peyton Manning. Drafted by the Colts as the first overall pick in the 1998, Manning was drafted out of Tennessee. When drafted, the Colts were in a rebuilding stage. Since moving to Indianapolis in 1985, the team qualified for the post season three times and went to one AFC Championship. This would all change with the drafting of Peyton. In his first season, the young Manning began a career that only a few others at his position have attained. Starting in 1998, he rewrote not only

Hawks regain their swagger

Black Hawk Beat by Ron Bartlett

Bulls Beat

The Hawks looked to get back on track when they dropped the puck at the United Center Wednesday night for another original six match up this time with the Toronto Maple Leafs. This game, however, did not start the way the Hawks wanted after the Leafs jumped out to a 3-1 lead. Coach Quenneville had seen enough from struggling Corry Crawford and changed goalies at the end of the first period. Ray Emery did not disappoint as he helped the Hawks come from behind and gained a hard-fought 5-4 victory. Next up was a road tilt with the Ottawa Senators. Still without their captain and two of their main defensemen, the Hawks had their work cut out for them again, but they came to play. Ray Emery was at his best in net, and the boys snuck away from Ottawa with a big 2-1 win, and the trade deadline acquisition of Johnny Oduya was a big defensive boost.

The surging Bulls have again reclaimed the top spot in the east. The Bulls all world guard is playing like a certain player, who happens to have statue outside the United Center (legend Michael Jordon). Looking at Derrick Rose play, he is becoming almost Jordanastic as he creates opportunities for his teammates and wills this team to succeed through his drive. With the big man down low, in Joakim Noah the Bulls have the sheriff maintain law and order on the court. Guard play is slowed because Rip Hamiltin has again suffered an injury.

Next up was a Sunday afternoon game against the hated Red Wings in Detroit. This figured to be a tough game as the Red Wings had revenge on their minds after a 2-1 loss in Chicago less then 2 weeks ago, but the Hawks came to play again and stayed with Detroit through the first period. The Hawks came out flying in the second period, but so did Detroit, and after a number of close calls and a couple of ringing shots off the post by the Wings, the Hawks took the lead on a great feed to Kane from Sharp, and thats where it stayed going into the third. The Hawks came out ready for an onslaught from the Wings, and thanks to good goal tending and even better defense, the Hawks finished off the Wings again, 2-1.

This Month's Job Finding Tips

submitted by Debra Auerbach, a writer and blogger for CareerBuilder.com and its job blog, The Work Buzz. She researches and writes about job search strategy, career management, hiring trends, and workplace issues.

The recession changed a lot of things. It changed the way people spend money, the way they save for retirement, the way they invest in stocks. Its also changed the way companies recruit employees. Gone are the days when companies courted prospective employees, hiring managers offered generous starting bonuses and job seekers could choose from multiple offers.

According to The National Bureau of Economic Research, the recession ended in 2009. Since then, companies have been slowly emerging from survival mode and have begun more active hiring. Yet the job market has been forever changed, and job seekers have had to face a new reality. So how does a job seeker succeed in the current job market? Here are six ways the job search has changed and the adapted tactics that can help in the job hunt. 1.) Passive job searching is no longer an option. Before the recession, it wasnt uncommon for a skilled, qualified job seeker to be romanced by a prospective employer. Recruiters would seek out candidates without the candidates having to do much in the way of aggressive follow-up. Thats rarely the case anymore. These days, job seekers need to act in order to find jobs and get the attention of employers. This means job seekers must be active in their job search and set alerts on major job boards/ search engines so they are notified when an appropriate job match is posted, says Daniel Newell, job development and marketing specialist for San Jose State Universitys Career Center in San Jose, Calif. This also means that job seekers should utilize several job-search strategies, such as job boards, job-search engines, classifieds, networking sites and social media, in addition to job fairs and hiring events. 2.) Fewer jobs mean more competition. In the early 2000s, jobs were more plentiful, and if you didnt get one job, chances are thered be another one just like it. Yet nowadays, the odds are not in a job seekers favor. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, when the recession began in December 2007, the number of unemployed people per job opening was 1.8. In June 2009, there were 6.1 unemployed people per job opening. While the number has

since been trending downward and was at 4.2 as of November, you still need to find ways to stand out from the competition. The burden of proof has shifted to the job seeker to demonstrate value and fit, says Roy Cohen, career coach and author of The Wall Street Professionals Survival Guide. Job seekers need to be bolder and more energetic in this very challenging market. They need to show that theyre willing to go above and beyond and that theyll work hard, tirelessly and take initiative to get the job done. Cohen also says that job seekers need to be more solution-oriented. Its not enough to say, Here I am. The emphasis is now on, Heres what I can do for you. 3.) Mistakes, even minor, are not tolerated. Back in the glory days before the recession, mistakes made in application materials or during an interview werent ideal, but they werent necessarily automatic deal breakers, either. If a candidate misspelled a word on his rsum but otherwise had all the right qualifications, the employer might have let the error slide. In this job market, theres no room for errors. Nothing less is accepted or tolerated in a market where there are many more candidates than positions, and companies need to be sold on adding head count, Cohen says. To avoid making costly mistakes, proofread your rsum backward and forward, and then have someone else proof it again. Ensure youre fully prepared for an interview by researching the company and practicing answering interview questions. 4.) Social media is the new recruiting tool. Before the recession, humanresources teams were more robust and better equipped to manage the hiring process. During the recession many companies downsized,

http://www.howeyson71.com Phone: 630.554.7870

leaving HR short-staffed and buried under piles of rsums. Recruiters have had to finds ways to recruit more efficiently, and social media have become a solution for hiring managers to find and screen candidates more quickly. That means job seekers need to have a social media presence, and a professional one at that. Social media has made a huge impact for job seekers, says Lavie Margolin, career coach and author of Lion Cub Job Search: Practical Job Search Assistance for Practical Job Seekers. Employers are using social media to post job openings and look into candidate backgrounds via private Facebook pages. Job seekers have an opportunity to increase their visibility via their LinkedIn page and possibly a blog that is industry-focused. 5.) Customization is critical. It is no longer acceptable in this job market to use a spray and pray method of applying for jobs. Blanket emailing recruiters with the same rsum will increase the chances that your application gets tossed to the side. Newell says its important that job seekers create targeted rsums. They must have a different rsum for each job they are applying for, and they must ensure that they effectively communicate their skills which relate to the job [for which] they are applying. The same goes for cover letters. 6.) Networking is more important than ever. Its becoming more and more of an advantage in todays world to know someone within the company youre applying to so your rsum gets in the right hands. While not everyone has automatic connections, there are other ways to build relationships. One way to do so is through networking. My advice to todays job seeker is to network, Newell says. Job seekers should join groups and attend socials through sites such as MeetUp and

LinkedIn. Attending a casual social and being active in online and offline groups can open many doors to employment. The job market may not look the same as it did five years ago, but that doesnt mean you have to start from square one. It just means that by equipping yourself with the job-search tools needed in todays world, youll be in a better position to get hired.

Be Resourceful Be the G Who Wudda Thunk??? Our Dog Buddy Guy is very good at social networking! This mild Chicago winter has allowed us to get some exercise with daily walks. Each day Buddy gets to network with the neighborhood dogs by checking his P-Mail (thanks to Kizer & Bender for that reference). He stops occasional and says Hi Ginger, Hi Bailey, or Nice work Jack! He returns the favor by saying Hi on a tree or snow pile. Occasionally he gets to say Hello face to face with his friends and their families. But he is very excited to get a chance to network with his buddies. Can someone please tell me how the dog can tell time and know when to stop me from working to make sure he gets his daily social networking in on time? Be a Resource Yesterday I was asked if I could help someone with her 10-minute presentation this morning. She is part of a Tuesday morning networking group in Plainfield. She needed to show a YouTube video on the restaurants 48 TV. Of course I said Yes. Thats part of the goal of networking and part of my brandto be a resource to people.

makes it much easier to copy and paste multiple people into an email response to Do you know someone who does? 3) Be GOOGLE Accessible We all know people who act more like vampires who want to SUCK the knowledge out of you for free and for their own gains, but there are many more people who will appreciate your knowledge and connections, while not taking advantage. The benefit to you, is that they are more likely to return the favor when someone asks them Do you know anyone who (insert your skills here)? When somebody texts, Facebook messages, calls, or emails with a request, do your best to be prompt, honest, and a resource. Be the Google! Its hard to be a resource to people without information at your fingertips. Google does it through vast databases and data mining. You can do the same with a little prep work, and it could even help you in your daily business. Here are a few tips to help you better organize information to be a better networking partner. 1) Treat Business Cards Like Gold How many piles of business cards do you have? Ive seen people who put them in files, folders, and sometimes boxes. Turn that business card into data gold. With a Neat Scanner, I scan every business card I get, add them to my email news (Buddy Guy calls that PMail news), and then add it to my address book.Yes, some people unsubscribe after the first email, but many re-subscribe after I send them a contact or client. 2) Organize,Categorize, and Prioritize When I get that card, I try to add notes of how I met the person, what they specialize in, and how they may help me, my friends, and clients. If they are only trying to sell me something, they are still added to my address book. If I think they are different than other people who do what they do, I add notes. And IF we get the chance to have a coffee, do a one-on-one, and I really feel that they can be a quality resource, they get put into a special category in my address book Vendors Video, Home Remodeling, or Personal Services. That The Bottom Line: Social networking is about creating relationships with people, not business card piles. Help people when they need it and they will remember you, and more often than not--return the favor. Your questions and comments are welcomed.

10 percent of hospitals nationwide in treating heart attacks and heart failure. In fact, Rush-Copley is the most preferred hospital for heart care by area consumers. Looney also explained that for patients unable to travel to a major hospital, Rush has invested in robotics and video technology so that doctors can see, speak with and diagnose patients though they may be miles away. Looney is equally passionate about the hospitals commitment to community and educational outreach programs. As a member of the GMACC Board and first proud member of the Montgomery Chamber FOUNDERS Club, she encouraged other members to consider the benefits, not only for their businesses, but for the entire community. A portion of this membership is contributed to the newly created Alice Sutcliff Memorial Scholarship Fund. Following Looneys presentation, Chamber President Jennifer Jones Sinnott (Brian Feltes and Associates), prompted attendees to give 30-second elevator speeches to highlight their individual businesses. Five first-time attendees were acknowledged, including Diane Teeling (ChiroOne Wellness Centers, Oakbrook), Jim Balaich (Farmers Insurance, Aurora), Christina Sanchez (Stonewall Business Services & Legal Shield, Bristol), Anna Johnson (Alden of Waterford, Aurora), and Mike Hatch (Edward Jones, Montgomery). As always, Montgomery Chamber luncheon attendees experienced the casual camaraderie, conversation and a chance to will the lovely floral arrangement provided by member Mary Ann Kutnick of Schaefer Greenhouses. The question I have to ask you is do you treat people more like a client (or opportunity to create sales for you) or do you treat them more like a partner (someone who you have a vested interest in their success)? I can assure you that clients act like SALES and partners act like your SALES TEAM! Last year, I attended more than 20 networking meetings a month with 12 different groups. This year, its been trimmed back to 13 meetings with six different groups (two meet weekly and two meet bi-monthly). Tack on an average of four presentations a month. Additionally, each month includes 12 personal training sessions (about three per week). We all have a lot of opportunities to be a resource for people, but it does not end there. Be The G! A friend of mine, Felicia Slattery, is a public speaker and trainer. She was giving a presentation at a networking event and said something that caught my attention, Be a GOOGLE to your friends and collegues. My wife Kim likes that because she is known as the Google Queen (even at her new job). Just like K&B put an understandable phrase to Buddy Guys networking, Felicia gave me a term to better describe what to do on a regular basis. Whether its through a phone call, email, text, tweet, Facebook, or LinkedIn message, people are always contacting me saying, You know everybody. Do you know a guy or gal who does catering, video, pooper scooping, logos, painting, coaching, Quickbooks (insert your request here)?" More often then not, I have multiple resources to call and choose from. THEY get to choose what fits THEIR needs and budget.

Continuing to serve and working to help improve our service to you our subscriber in the Coming Year; I look forward to continuing in helping to keep you with the Times!

Three years ago a group of us got together and formed a small community online news magazine, the first of its kind. Working with our good friend Gary Kopyinski and the E Park Forest News, we saw real potential in this growing industry. Having come from a public service background, many thought I was crazy or from the moon when we launched this online project. The story of our launch began with the Kendall County Fair. Back in 2009 we had the pleasure of be joined there by our friends at WCPT 820 am and Dick Kay. With five founding members, we grew into an alternative for traditional media. Over the past three years is has been an experience to interview and participate with people and the community to help deliver the news. To see where we were with the Kendall Voice and how we evolved into the Kendall Weekly Times news magazine. Looking back, it is funny remembering our first website. It was our first attempt at creating an online version. One word comes to mind: train wreck. I look back and see how the Times has evolved and how I have learned so much working to build and live this dream. For three years it has been my pleasure to be at the helm through the controversy and the crowing achievements. My greatest story and achievement with the Kendall Weekly Times was standing

Joe's View: Emanuel and Daley agree on one thing, at least

By Joe Fosco

In his less than a year in office, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has done a lot to move himself out of the shadow of his predecessor, Richard M. Daley. Emanuels administration is much more concerned with wooing TV and print media than his predecessor. Daley was notoriously gruff when it came to dealing with reporters. Emanuels people are also impressively tech savvy, utilizing the web to influence public opinion though services like Facebook and Twitter. Daley might not even know what Twitter is, let alone how to use it. This need to break away from the Daley era has even prompted Emanuel to openly condemn the work of Daleys office. Emanuel, in the

Well, here we are: three years and counting. On behalf of the staff at Kendall Weekly Times, we would like to thank you for all your support. It is our pleasure to be serving you since 2009.

As sports editor, it has been fun to see us grow from five would-be writers to having a tremendous supporting cast of over 35 contributors. My fondest memory was the magazines second anniversary party and having the opportunity to meet the legendary Dick Kay. Watching for years and seeing him deliver the news, I was in awe. Then getting the opportunity to work with him on the Kendall Weekly Times was a dream come true. Over the past three years, working with the staff of the Times has been a treat, seeing our everchanging magazine to grow into what it is today. I really appreciate all the work and support the staff has given in helping us to deliver the community news to Kendall County and the surrounding areas.

run-up for the announcement of his city-mending Chicago Infrastructure Trust, said Chicago has just suffered through a lost decade. He did try to soften the blow by also mentioning he did not want to try to figure out exactly why or how this state of affairs came to pass. It is fairly plain, though, that he wishes to impugn the cronyism of the Daley administration. There is one thing the Daley and Emanuel eras will have in common, though. Both administrations are dead set on denying the law-abiding citizens of Illinois the right to bear arms. Any supporter of the second amendment most likely remembers that great day in June of 2010 when The Supreme Court struck down Chicagos ban on handgun ownership. That plainly unconstitutional law was considered by Daley to be one of his greatest triumphs. When it was struck down, he ranted and raved about the violent consequences that would come from letting more handguns out on the street, yet there has been no rise in gun-related violence in Chicago. Actually, violence has gone down since the ban was lifted. Despite these numbers, the Emanuel administration still thinks legal guns are the problem. The Mayor has made it his personal mission to push through new gun laws, and not just for Chicago. Emanuel wants all of Illinois to go the way of the Windy City. Emanuels plan (HB 5831), which cleared the Executive Committee in the Illinois House on February 29th, institutes a licensing system for all guns in the state. Every gun owner would have to pay a hefty $65 registration fee every five years for each weapon they own. Chicago already has such a gun registry, but the State of Illinois only requires that gun owners register themselves and not every weapon they own. Emanuels move is a bit slicker than Daleys, as he is intent on just making it more and more difficult and costly to have a legal weapon. Nothing has changed, though. In the end, Rahm and Richard just want you to give up your rights without a fight and help bail the State out of its mountainous debt problem to boot.

The night envelopes the car, and allows only two beams of light as illumination. Traveling at the speed limit, the car runs through the night, like a cheetah through the underbrush of the jungle. You are the driver. Your license is suspended. You do not even know that your license is suspended, but you realize that you have failed to pay certain parking tickets, failed to pay child support, and that you were in an accident a couple of years ago without insurance. However, you do not worry about this because you have got more things to worry about. You have mounting bills that have continued to keep you from sleeping. Sleep deprivation has only increased the amount of incessant tension that permeates your every sense. You know you need to drive, but do you in fact need to go to jail? You also want to make sure that you understand your rights with regard to whether you should allow your car to be searched, once an officer asks that question. If the officer stops you, and asks may they search the car, what is your response? Pursuant to the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution, you may respond that you do not wish for them to search the vehicle. The officer must have either a warrant, probable cause, or a legal reasonable suspicion to begin any search of a vehicle. However, through recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions, the police have been able to use dogs to ascertain the existence of drugs without the use of a warrant and without the use of reasonable suspicion or probable cause. These reasons point to the importance of making sure that you are driving with a proper license, and that the automobile is properly registered. It is a punishable offense for

anyone to drive or be in actual physical control of a motor vehicle on any highway of this State at a time when one's driver's license or permit or privilege to obtain a license or permit is revoked or suspended, under Illinois law or the law of another state, except as may be specifically allowed by a monitoring device driving permit, family financial responsibility driving permit, probationary license to drive, or a restricted driving permit.(West Publishing, 625 ILCS 5/6-303, 2009). The statute providing that one who drives when the license or permit or privilege to obtain a license or permit is revoked or suspended shall be punished must be read in the disjunctive. People v. Suddoth, 52 Ill. App. 2d 355, 202 N.E.2d 120 (1st Dist. 1964). In this article, I will delve into Illinois law, because I am an Illinois attorney, and work in Illinois law, particularly in the area of Driving Under the Influence, and other driving issues. Many people think that they get a yellow citation they can treat it as a simple traffic ticket. They believe that they can handle it themselves. They believe that they can miss court dates. They believe that they have control of the situation, and continue to drive. In Illinois, if they are convicted more than twice, they are then facing a very serious felony, which can land them in the Illinois Department of Corrections. The same is true with every single state in the United States. Other states also communicate with one another with regard to which drivers are on suspension. The statute, which specifically includes suspensions under the law of another state, allows Illinois to impose criminal liability for driving in Illinois while a license that

was issued by another state was revoked, even as a result of conduct that would not be illegal in Illinois. People v. Jett, 328 Ill. App. 3d 468, 262 Ill. Dec. 695, 766 N.E.2d 315 (5th Dist. 2002). Further, the Driving While License Suspended conviction may be enhanced to a felony, and also used as a predicate felony to enhance other felonies. Conviction for driving while license revoked (DWLR), which had been increased to a Class 4 felony based on a prior conviction for DWLR, could be used as a predicate felony for an armed violence conviction. People v. Lucas, App. 3 Dist.2007, 310 Ill.Dec. 96, 372 Ill. App.3d 279, 865 N.E.2d 420, appeal

allowed 314 Ill.Dec. 832, 225 Ill.2d 657, 875 N.E.2d 11198. State sufficiently established at sentencing that at time of defendant's arrest, defendant's driver's license had been revoked for driving under the influence of alcohol, as required to support convictions for class 2 felony driving under the influence of alcohol and class 4 felony driving while license revoked; presentence report revealed that defendant had prior driving under the influence convictions. People v. DiPace, App. 2 Dist.2004, 288 Ill. Dec. 839, 354 Ill.App.3d 104, 818 N.E.2d 774, modified on denial of rehearing, appeal denied 294 Ill. Dec. 5, 214 Ill.2d 539, 830 N.E.2d 5.

Therefore, the DWLR can become the predicate felony to any other felony, and that suggests increasing the Department of Corrections sentence. Already, the person holding the yellow citation their second DWLR should already be concerned about a potential felony sentence. Hence, when facing a potential felony charge, one should not think of this as an experience that may be easily handled. One should seek the qualified, skillful professional services of an attorney who has been educated in the areas of automobile laws and that specific means Chapter 625 of the Illinois Compiled Statutes if the attorney is an Illinois attorney.

The second conviction of DWLR in Illinois comes as a result of a second conviction, even if the first conviction is not enhanced. Under statute for driving while license suspended (DWLS), defendant was subject to felony sentencing provisions for his second DWLS offense, even though his original suspension was not for an enhanced violation, where his second DWLS offense occurred while his license was subject to statutory summary suspension. People v. Bloomberg, App. 3 Dist.2008, 317 Ill.Dec. 447, 378 Ill.App.3d 686, 881 N.E.2d 615, appeal denied 321 Ill.Dec. 557, 228 Ill.2d 537, 889 N.E.2d 1117, appeal pending. a major burden onto the license itself. The Statutory Summary Suspension comes as a result of a Driving under the Influence charge. I specifically use the word charge rather than conviction because the DUI charge may result in a statutory summary suspension even if the underlying DUI is discharged or if the defendant is found not guilty, the statutory summary suspension may survive, and may still result in mandatory sentencing related to the statutory summary suspension. I repeat that a mandatory sentencing exists for the charge of Driving while License Suspended or Revoked (DWLR). The mandatory sentencing exists, which prevents a negotiation between the judge, the defense attorney, or the prosecuting attorney. Therefore, the defendant wants to make sure that they do not put themselves in a position that predetermines their jail sentence. For example, a defendant charged with driving while license was suspended with respect to defendant who had eight prior convictions for driving while license was suspended or revoked was Class 4 felony that subjected defendant to minimum 180 days in jail. People v. Kennedy, App. 4 Dist.2007, 311 Ill.Dec. 168, 372 Ill.App.3d 306, 867 N.E.2d 1154, appeal denied 312 Ill.Dec. 659, 224 Ill.2d 585, 871 N.E.2d 59.

Putting People First

left struggling in poverty while men hide behind political platforms and podiums, coming down only to kiss babies, leaving the women to change their diapers and care for the snotnosed dears while they are sick. Women and girls are still subjected to genital mutilation, forbidden from driving, and forced into the sex trade industry. My heart aches for all the women and children killed, maimed, and left orphaned or widowed by war, as though our smart bombs and drones can tell the difference between innocent civilians and warriors. I continue to speak out against the violence against servicewomen within our own armed forces. If that makes me a slut, so be it. So make fun of the dumb blondes. Snicker about the soccer moms. Encourage cat fights. Put down our driving skills. Push us to become Wonder Woman and Supermom in a society where we have to succeed on all fronts. Call us whatever names youd like.

This has been a quiet primary season so far for the local Democrats. Dont tell that to many area Democrats in the past few weeks, this reporter has attended two rallies which local party faithful attended. Will County Democrats organized in what was the second in a series of regional rallies, pulling together the party faithful and encouraging people to work together, said event organizer Richard Rodriquez. We had a great committee: Mike Keniley from the Plainfield Township Democrats and Kristine Heiman from Kendall County really pulled together. In a crowd of over 90 people, local, state, and national candidates talked about the importance of again getting back to the core beliefs that we as democrats hold." Will County Regional Superintendent of Schools Jennifer Bertino Tarrant, who is also seeking a position in the newly created 49th State Senate seat said, Whenever you get so many people together who have the same shared goal then anything is possible." "Yes, victory is possible in 2012," Will County States Attorney James Glascow added during his speech. Kendall County was represented by three of their four County Board candidates: Herman Johnson, Amy Cesich, and Kristine Heiman. During her speech Ms. Heiman wanted to let everyone know that it is important to make this a voter-friendly environment and reinforce to the residents why it is important to participate and vote on March 20th. On Sunday, The Kendall County Democrats held a rally at the American Inn Suites in which several local candidates attended, including Bill Foster and Dennis Anderson seeking Congress. Bill Foster wanted to address the reason why it is important this year to send a Democratic majority back to Washington DC. He explained that Congress is being blocked from helping working families by creating jobs and research

Women's History Month for Sluts?

On the Trail: Young Republicans Dive for Charity

By Dick Kolf

Normally, I would be insulted (or insluted) to be called a slut. I try to live my life with decorum, selfrespect, and family values. However, this month, being a SLUT takes on a whole new meaning. If, according to a certain controversial talk show host, whose initials happen to be R.L., women who advocate on behalf of womens health are sluts, then I will wear the title as a badge of honor. On this day, formerly known as International Womens Day, and this month of March, once known as Womens History Month, I invite you to join me in celebrating advances in womens health care while working toward more advances, as women still fall victim to health care discrimination. My invitation extends to our male readers in addition to our female readers. This is an equal opportunity for both genders to proudly claim their titles as Sluts. I care about womens reproductive rights. I care about womens health. I care about expanding womens and girls educational, professional, and empowerment opportunities in our world today. I remain appalled at the fact that in 2012 so many women and children are the ones If, by chance, the name slut happens to be at the top of your list of names to call me, be my guest. In fact, please join the Slut Club, advocating for womens rights well into the 21st Century. Sometimes in real life, its better to be called a slut than to call someone you dont agree with by that same name, as if your limited understanding and opinion is better than your political rivals. Wishing you a productive and enlightening International Sluts Day and Sluts History Month. I am thankful to the sluts who came before me to advocate for voting, citizenship, education, workplace, and other rights for my gender.

Last Sunday, if you took a ride out to Silver Springs State Park, you would have found an unusual site a bunch of grownups jumping into Loon Lake in the middle of winter. I know what you are thinking: Loon Lake and a bunch of adults jumping into the water...they crazy. Well, I assure you they are not crazy. The event is called the polar plunge and is organized to help raise money for the Special Olympics. Across the country millions of dollars are raised to help spread Special Olympics with fundraising efforts like this. Kendall County, in cooperation with several area law enforcement agencies, field a team and ask for donations. Recently, the Kendall County
