Spoliarium Painting by Juan Luna
An oil painting on poplar, the Spoliarium was painted by Juan Luna in Rome in 1884, winning the second prize at the Madrid Academy Exhibition of Oil Paintings. The Municipality of Barcelona purchased this chef doeuvre for the City Hall. It is arguably the most internationally renowned piece of modern Filipino art. Today, it can be viewed in the main gallery located on the ground floor of the National Museum of the Philippines.
The painting was a silver medalist (ninth silver medal award among forty-five ) during the 1884 Exposicion General de Bellas Artes in Madrid,Spain, also known as the Madrid [3][8][9][10] Exposition. According to Raquel A.G. Reyes, Hidalgo's winning the silver medal for the painting was a landmark achievement that proved the ability of Filipinos to match the work of Spaniards and laid [11] claim to Filipino participation in European culture. Regarded as one of the national treasures of the Philippines, a copy of the painting is currently housed [13] at the Philippine's Metropolitan Museum of Manila and a part of the art collection of the Bangko Sentral [6] ng Pilipinas(Central Bank of the Philippines). The original was destroyed in a fire at the University of [14] Valladolid in Spain.
