What is a Simplex Repeater?

Mostradiooperatorsarefamiliarwiththeconceptofaduplexrepeater,wherea separatereceiverandtransmitteroperateatthesametime,listeningonone frequencyandretransmittingonanother.Duplexrepeatersallownatural conversation,buttheyretypicallybulkyandexpensivebecauseoftheelaborate filtersrequired. Asimplexrepeater,ontheotherhand,isastoreandforwarddevice.Itrecords incomingtransmissionsandresendsthemonthesamechannel.Itcanprovide thesameextensionofcoverageandrangeasaduplexrepeater,withtheobvious

drawbackofrequiringtwiceasmuchairtimetocarryoutaconversation,aseach transmissionisrepeatedback.However,theirsimplicityandlowcostmakes themperfectfortemporaryoremergencyuse,andtoprovidecoverageinareas wherethecostofaduplexrepeatercantbejustified. Formanyradioclubsandemergencyresponseorganizations,asinglesemi portableduplexrepeaterisamajorinvestment.SimplexrepeatersliketheADS SR1,ontheotherhand,areinexpensiveenoughtobekeptasindividual equipmentforeachmember,makingitmorelikelythattheyllbeavailablefor rapiddeploymentwhenneeded.Anemergencyrepeaterstationcanbesetup withnothingmorethanahandheldradio,acable,andtherepeaterunititself. TheADSSR1hasadditionalfeaturesthatmakeitusefulasmorethanjusta simplexrepeater.Forexample,thesayagainfeaturecanbeusedtorepeata singlemissedmessageondemand,evenwiththenormalrepeaterfunction disabled.Thisisparticularlyusefulinsituationswheremoststationsareclose enoughtoheareachotherdirectlyandnormaloperationoftherepeaterwould bedistracting.
