The Medford Sun
The ROTC color
guard, students and
teachers march
through the hallways
of Lenape High
School recently to
celebrate Black
History Month.
By SEAN PATRICK MURPHY
The Medford Sun
hey marched around
the high school as
Martin Luther King
Jr.s I Have a
Dream played over
the PA system.
About 200 of them
students, teachers,
and staff from Shawnee,
Lenape, Seneca and Cherokee
high schools converged on
Lenape High School for the
event, a celebration of the life
and legacy of King.
Former Lenape student and
member of the African-Ameri-
can club Troy Riley started the
march a few years ago to recog-
nize the civil rights leader and
to celebrate Black History
Month.
King delivered his speech dur-
ing the march on Washington in
August 1963.
Junior Shayla Farmer, presi-
dent of the Lenape High School
African-American club, thinks
the march is good because it
brings people together. The 16-
year-old said the symbolic march
is an opportunity for students in
other district high schools to get
together.
I hope that everyone takes
away what Martin Luther King
did for us and how weve come to-
gether as a country and as a peo-
ple, Farmer said. Recognizing
him as a person is really good.
Brenda Martin-Lee, business
educator and Seneca multicul-
tural club adviser, said the
turnout was impressive and
commented on the speech.
I think that speech says a lot
about where they were at that
time and where we are now and
it gives the students and staff an
opportunity to stop and think
about what the speech was about
in terms of civil rights, not just
for African-Americans, but for
all people, Martin-Lee said. I
think its great.
Pier Carey, a math teacher at
Seneca, is also co-adviser of the
multicultural club there.
Its a really great way to get
kids from all of our schools to-
gether to reenact what happened

While its still unclear exactly
what will be on it, there will be a
referendum vote in Medford next
month.
Most likely there will be a vote
on April 17 on whether to elimi-
nate curbside trash pickup.
Medford Township Adminis-
trator Chris Schultz said such
pickup currently costs each tax-
payer $226 per year.
The referendum was discussed
at a recent council workshop
meeting where the members
opened up the budget discussion
to the public.
I believe the meeting was very
informative for the public,
Schultz said. I understand the
township has not had a budget
workshop like that previously.
He said the residents greatest
concern is the loss of services, es-
pecially trash, and the potential
tax implications.
Medford Police Chief Richard
Meder recently voiced his con-
cern that cutting the police force
drastically would result in more
crime and slow response times.
There were 49 police officers in
Medford in 2009, while there are
28 now.
My hope as chief of police
is that, if they do consider a refer-
endum, that any referendum
would include bringing back
some police officers, Meder said.
At this point, any officers com-
ing back will help me and will
help the public.
Chris Desana, who has lived 15
years in Medford said the work-
shop meeting was spectacular.
Finally. Everything is open to
whats really going on, Desana
said. Its open, transparent and
no arguing.
He said council is absolutely
taking to heart residents con-
cerns.
Desana said he would vote no
on the referendum because he
would rather have people pay for
their own trash.
I dont think the trash pickup
bill you pay should be based on
the value of your house. Id rather
have it based on how much trash I
use, he said. Just because I have
a bigger house doesnt mean I
should pay more for my trash.
Desana also said he thinks the
township should renegotiate po-
lice contracts before hiring offi-
cers back.
Timothy Moore, a 23-year Med-
ford resident, said he appreciated
the openness of the meeting.
That referendum is a good
idea, Moore said. The people
need to have their opinion on
Trash pickup could be
included on referendum
vote slated for April 17

An 18-year-old Medford man
stands accused of locking his dis-
abled father in a bathroom be-
cause he wanted the keys to the
family car, and his father refused,
Medford police said.
Tyler Medina is alleged to have
taken his 45-year-old fathers
Medic Alert bracelet and cell
phone to keep his father from con-
tacting authorities for help, police
said.
The victim is confined to a
wheelchair, reports said.
Police say Medina left his fa-
ther locked in the bathroom for 45
minutes.
Police say they responded to a
call of a man in a medical emer-
gency on Monday, March 5, at 3:06
p.m. Then, a second call came in
of some kind of situation at the
Branch Street house.
Police said the 45-year-old vic-
tim complained of chest pains
that started before he was locked
in the bathroom. He said his son
wouldnt help him until he gave
him the car keys.
The young man did call for
medical assistance after his fa-
ther gave him the keys, according
to police.
Police say Medina resisted ar-
rest and tried to flee the scene.
They say he was subdued with
the help of pepper spray.
Medinas father was transport-
ed to Virtua Memorial Hospital in
Mount Holly with cardiac prob-
lems. His condition is not imme-
diately known.
Medina was remanded to the
Burlington County Jail on
$300,000 bail on charges of neg-
lect of a disabled person,
criminal restraint, theft, harass-
ment and resisting arrest, police
said.

in our opinion
F
or a state and nation that have
suffered through devastating
economic times, every scrap of
good news is welcomed. Last week, we
received some good news.
The governors office announced
that, according to data tracked by Site
Selection magazine, the number of
new and expanded corporate facilities
in the state jumped last year. Jumped
quite a bit, in fact.
The data showed that 76 projects
were recorded in 2011, compared to
only 23 in 2010.
On top of that, the governors office
cited Rutgers University economist
Joseph Senecas findings that the state
added about 60,000 new private jobs
over the past two years.
That the news was released from the
governors office means that, of
course, the governor is taking a lot of
credit for these accomplishments. And
maybe he should. Love him or hate
him, Christie has made difficult deci-
sions regarding taxation and spend-
ing. Regardless of whether this boost
in economic activity is a direct result
of those decisions or mere coinci-
dence, theres no denying that the
economy is looking up.
Of particular note are the qualifica-
tions of what a new and expanded
corporate facility actually is. It is a
project that must create at least 50 full-
time regular jobs. It must involve at
least 20,000 new square-feet or involve
at least $1 million for construction,
land and building. And, retail shop-
ping and public-sector institutions do
not count.
So, those 76 projects carry some
weight. Some private-sector weight.
They are creating private-sector jobs
that will be around for awhile.
That leads to greater employment
and increased spending from the pri-
vate sector. Which, of course, spurs
the economy even more.
The state and national economies
are far from being out of the woods.
But this kind of news shows that they
are getting closer.
An improving economy?
This study suggests that indeed there is at least some good news
More jobs for New Jersey
A recent magazine study shows that
New Jersey had a banner year in 2011
when it came to attracting new and
expanded corporate facilities. That
means more jobs and a stronger
economy.
Presidents economic policy
is disastrous, says writer
The economic policy of the Obama Ad-
ministration is disastrous for America.
Simply put, its a policy of a weak and de-
preciating dollar to finance out of control
spending with annual trillion dollar-plus
deficits as far as the eye can see, making
everyone poorer.
Take the current economic repression
policy where interest rates are artificially
kept at zero by the Federal Reserve Bank
for savers while the very same Fed cre-
ates monetary inflation making all dollars
worth less.
The government is stealing from the
people who are retired and who depend on
interest income to live upon, forcing them
to spend their nest eggs just to survive or
speculate to try and keep up.
And spare us from the inflation is only 2
or 3 percent lie, after you exclude food and
energy. Please show me the person who
neither eats nor uses energy?
The real measure of inflation that was
used in 1980 now measures inflation be-
tween 7 to 10 percent, that is, what real peo-
ple are experiencing in real prices.
Go fill up you gas tank or buy some gro-
ceries and then tell me its only 3 percent
inflation.
The economic canard is that a cheap dol-
lar is good but what about everyone else?
Take just one product oil. Do you think
oil producers will not notice inflated dol-
lars and not increase their prices accord-
ingly?
How about all the producers who then
use energy in their products? Will they not
increase their prices accordingly?
So we the people, who are the ultimate
consumers, will pay not only a higher
prices for goods but all of our money will
now be worth less.
How is Obamas financial repression
policy good for you or America? Its
got to stop now and be reversed immediate-
ly.
- Bruno DiStefano
DUI does serious harm
to Defy the Issue campaign
Dr. Del Rossis arrest on suspicion of
DUI is a PR nightmare for the district, and
unfortunately, all over Facebook the kids
are now posting that Defy the Issue is a
joke. At this point, it doesnt matter if he is
innocent or guilty, in the eyes of our kids,
the damage is done. And when it comes to
teaching them about this important issue,
it is an ongoing challenge to get them to
take it seriously.
I now fear that the entire Defy the Issue
campaign will be flushed down the toilet,
unless the district acts fast and uses this as
a teaching opportunity. The kids need to
know that even people in power can suffer
the negative consequences of alcohol
abuse. They can smash their car, experi-
ence severe injury (thank goodness he was
not seriously hurt), and potentially lose
their job.
I was saddened to learn when reading
newspaper coverage that the school board
knew about this on Sunday, Feb. 27, and did
not comment, saying it was a personal mat-
ter. When Dr. Del Rossi stood up a few
weeks ago publicly telling nearly every
middle school student in Medford about
the dangers of drugs and alcohol, his
drinking no longer became a private mat-
ter.
I understand the legal reason for the
deafening silence, but do our kids under-
stand? The school board needs to address,
and address this NOW, before they lose the
tiny shred of credibility they have left in
the eyes of our kids.

CLEANING
and reflect on what the speech
meant and still means, she said.
I think that weve come a long
way and I think that weve
achieved a lot through education,
being able to integrate our col-
leges and universities.
Carey said the election of
Barack Obama to the presidency
was another milestone.
However, she believes we have
a long way to go.
Seneca senior Jillisa Roberts is
president of her schools multi-
cultural club.
I think its a great opportunity
for students to actually hear the
speech because we dont get that
opportunity often in high school.
But I think its a good time for us
to hear it and to take advantage of
the opportunities that were given
because of the speech, the 17-
year-old said. I feel like weve
broken down a lot of stereotypi-
cal boundaries and weve broken
down a lot of boundaries that we
werent able to do in the past
and weve made a lot of
progress.
Crystal Josiah, 17, is a leader in
the African-American club at
Lenape.
I feel we all get along much
better, the senior said. We can
all be part of something without
having to worry about our skin
color.
Shawnee High School Princi-
pal Matt Campbell thinks the
march helps people celebrate dif-
ferences and reminds students to
judge people by the content of
their character rather than the
color of their skin, as King did.
Its nice to honor Dr. King for
all that he has done and I think
its a good message for these kids
to hear what he had to say and
what it means today, Campbell
said. I think theres been a lot of
progress, but I think theres still a
long way to go.
Shawnee sophomore Lauren
Coker, who is in her first year as a
member of the multicultural
club, said a good friend recruited
her. Coker said she wanted to see
schools with much more diversity
than Shawnee.
Theres been such a great im-
provement from his time to now,
the 16-year-old said. Theres al-
ways going to be racism, but peo-
ple have learned to overcome it.
Lenape English teacher and
African-American Club adviser
Luis German said King is inspi-
rational because he brought
change.
March for Martin is a good ex-
perience for the students to find
out what exactly the I Have a
Dream speech is about, German
said.
Jenise Hillian, a special educa-
tion teacher at Cherokee and ad-
viser for the African-American
club there, said the club is open to
all people.
Its just a fun time for every-
body and its a nice thing for
those who are of African-Ameri-
can descent to get together and to
share and to appreciate our cul-
ture, Hillian said. This genera-
tion doesnt realize what the
struggle has been for African-
Americans and other people of
color. They were born being able
to do anything, go anywhere.
She said African-Americans
owe King a lot for advancing the
Civil Rights of all citizens.
I cant imagine not being able
to go to the same places I go to
now, so Im very grateful for
him, Hillian said. I hope that
the young people learn that it
wasnt always like this.

what services they want or dont
want and whether or not theyre
willing to pay for them. I think if
they take away trash collection,
the parade of trucks is going to be
here picking up trash (and will)
add to the traffic problems. Its
going to detract from the town it-
self as you see trash strewn all
over the streets.
I think our own department of
public works is going to be more
responsible at trash collection
than some contractor buzzing
into town, making pickup and
then buzzing back out of town.
Moore said hed be willing to
pay for consolidated services to
the township to continue trash
service.
He also thinks the referendum
should include hiring back cops
who were laid off, in part, because
he agrees with Meder that the po-
lice need to be proactive and visi-
ble in town to deter crime.
Moore also said he believes the
schools should do some soul
searching, as well, given the
economy and the state of Med-
fords finances.
With seven cents out of every
dime I spend going to education, I
think the board of education is
the one responsible for looking at
their budget because theyre 70
percent of my tax, he said.
Theyre the ones who really
need to sharpen their pencil not
these poor guys here who are just
trying to create basic services for
township residents.
The residents of Medford are
angry, upset and distrustful of
their local government, Mayor
James Randy Pace said. After
years of poor leadership and
management, a downturn in the
economy and loss of revenue
sources, we are left with a mess
that they are just now becoming
aware of.
Fortunately there are several
people involved now that have
been working for at least three
years to get this turned around.
Having replaced the governing
body with all new members is a
significant start.
Pace also said the decision to
put a referendum to the voters to
exceed the 2 percent tax levy cap
will be made this month.
While the decision is one that
is difficult, it appears that it is the
only one that will prevent the
total loss of local control of Med-
ford Township, he said. I find it
hard to imagine that the state of
New Jersey would be able to man-
age Medford from Trenton.
And, as far as police go, Pace
said he couldnt see cutting any
more positions.
I have asked for suggestions
from the department regarding
the budget deficit and am waiting
for their response, Pace said.
