Bomb goes off in city

A BOMB which partially exploded under a car in east Belfast yesterday afternoon was paramilitary, according to the chairman of Belfast District Policing Partnership. The PSNI said last night that a suspicious object in the Flora Street area turned out to be a viable device, after examination by Army bomb experts. Blaming paramilitaries, DPP chairman Jim Rodgers said that a device partially exploded under a vehicle and some 120 homes had to be evacuated. Turn to page 12

Opposition to gay clergy

A CHURCH of Ireland parish has carried out a survey which its rector claims shows overwhelming opposition to clergy in same-sex civil partnerships. Amid continued controversy within Irish Anglicanism about same-sex relationships, the Rev Donard Collins, rector of Killowen Parish in Coleraine, said that there were 64 responses to his parish survey, all of which condemned same-sex relationships. see page 6 and letters, page 14

ULSTER Unionist deputy leader John McCallister will stand for the UUP leadership and has dramatically promised to immediately remove the party from the Stormont Executive if he becomes leader.

Announcing his candidature in an article for todays News Letter, Mr McCallister says that his first act as leader would be to remove the partys sole minister and enter into Opposition. The South Down MLAs vow comes hours after Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy confirmed that he would stand to succeed Tom Elliott.

I have taken out nomination papers for the position of leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, Mr Kennedy told the Press Association. And I intend to submit those papers. The UUP veteran said he would elaborate on his reasons for seeking the partys top job in the coming days. Turn to page 8
