You have an expensive problem. Lets fix it.

An outage puts you at the center of chaos with a business imperative to recover and restore your services to your clients as soon as possible. The business impacts of a failure can make or break you in an unforgiving, competitive marketlost revenue, lost customers, poor productivity, penalties or litigation, damage to your brand, reputation, and stock price. IT is critical and integral to all business activities, and the need for unshakable stability is paramountbut evershrinking budgets can make meeting internal service level agreements seem impossible. Youre not alone. Most businesses would find it difficult, if not impossible to operate for a few hours, let alone an entire day, without access to core IT services. Downtime can significantly damage the profitability, productivity, and reliability of your business. The lost business and customer service shortfalls can put a serious dent in the bottom line of your businessany revenue you lose could be revenue gained for your competitors. Now is the time to take a serious look at where you can cut costs without hampering your ability to deliver your services to your clientsin fact, you can cut costs while improving the stability of your IT environment. Now is the time to focus IT spending on investments that show their results in the bottom line. At HP, we faced similar challenges with our business. Thats why we created and rely upon HP Serviceguard Solutions to keep our own business unshakable. HP Serviceguard Solutions protect businesses completely and intelligently, that you may not notice failures at all. HP Serviceguard Solutions are fast and transparent.

software, even facility power and cooling. This type of environment allows you to shift resources from operations to innovation. The difference with the HP Converged Infrastructure is that we bring a truly converged set of technologies and engineering to the biggest and most complex workloads in IT. Our complete portfolio of modular, standardsbased building blocks is designed for convergence, and our architectural framework provides the blueprint to manage your move at your own pace and preference. This means you can change parts in and out no matter how or when you like to do it. You dont get locked in, which is a critical part of our architecture and a very important part of what we believe in. Its about building according to industry standards and giving people choices. The converged infrastructure reunifies business, application, and infrastructure functions, delivering faster time to value, simplified management, increased utilization, and lower power cost across an extensible scalable set of applications. HP brings this converged infrastructure approach to the world of missioncritical computing, in a way that no other vendor can. HP has been leading the trend for more than five years, delivering the building blocks of a converged architecture, like HP BladeSystem, Virtual Connect, Mission Critical Superdome, virtualized storage, and sharedservice management with BladeSystem Matrix. HP is the only vendor with the intellectual property and investments across servers, storage, networking, power and cooling, and management to do convergence right.

The difference convergence makes

Convergence also requires bringing together management tools and processes so resources can be managed in a holistic, integrated manner. The reality is that downtime happens, whether its caused by technology, process, or people. The difference that the HP missioncritical Converged Infrastructure makes is that it comes with the unique levels of integration that HP builds into our software. Availability, workload balancing, capacity planning, virtualization, utility pricing, server, system and storage managementthey all work together. In fact, they work better together. When we converge all of those solutions, you get resiliency at an entirely different level, making stability possible without skyrocketing costs. In the HP missioncritical Converged Infrastructure, the solutions we build dont just work together, they work better together. HP Serviceguard Solutions are built from the ground up to be integrated with our full suite of infrastructure management software for HP Integrity, delivering precise control and broadsweeping manageability over your entire environment, not just bits and parts.

Meet the worlds first missioncritical converged infrastructure.

HP has been delivering missioncritical systems for decades, so when we set out to design the newest generation of our HP Integrity servers, we talked to many customers about what they needed to become modern missioncritical. They told us that their top challengesin additional to uptime, reliability, and overall availability are flexibility and agility, allowing them to improve service levels aligned to fluctuating business demand along with smart investments that use IT resources in a smarter way. At HP, we deliver this type of efficient, agile, costeffective, and resilient infrastructure through our HP Converged Infrastructure strategy. Our approach is to knock down costly IT silos and bring resources back together in the most optimal way to create a shared, common environment that is simpler and more automated. This is achieved by reuniting and integrating storage, networking, servers, management

What you can gain from convergence is staggering: a fluid, responsive environment in which virtualization is transparent. High availability and disaster recovery behaves exactly the same on virtual machines, electrically isolated partitions and everything in between, so you can control costs with consolidation without opening the door for downtime. Or, consider an environment that automatically incorporates intelligent workload management into availability decisions. After outages, resources are recovered and rebalanced simultaneously. Maintenance and upgrades are completed with zero downtime, all the while maintaining full throttle performance without any human intervention. Convergence can also lower costs. HP Utility Pricing solutions are the most automated and integrated portfolio of ondemand computing solutions available, allowing you to pay for what you actually use and to move hardware and software resources where you need them, when you need them. When disasters strike, resource optimization, cost savings, and availability go handinhand in the missioncritical converged infrastructure, saving more on disaster recovery.

Serviceguard: The foundation of every Serviceguard Solution, Serviceguard monitors the availability and accessibility of your critical IT services, such as applications, databases, or even custom applications. Those applicationsand everything that they rely upon to do their jobare meticulously monitored for any fault in hardware, software, operating system, virtualization, storage, or the network. When a failure or threshold violation is detected, Serviceguard automatically and transparently resumes normal operations in mere seconds by restarting the service in the right way and in the right place to enable improved performance. Sophisticated multitier applications typically rely on a number of cooperative application services. Serviceguard also includes the framework for building these and having the correct start, stop sequencing built right in. HP also considers manageability and simplicity of paramount importance in clustered environments, and therefore we continually enhance Serviceguard to make it easier to maintain and configure, reducing planned downtime across your entire environment. Serviceguard Manager: Included at no charge with Serviceguard, Serviceguard Manager gives your staff a birdseye view of the entire environment with full control from a single console. Its intuitive graphical interface and effortless wizards reduce both the need for expertise and the potential for human error by automating cluster setup and configuration to enhance efficiency and improve the productivity of your IT staff. HP Serviceguard Manager also includes many features that ease the configuration of clusters, including integration with the HP Serviceguard Extensions and Toolkits. This greatly simplifies configuration, administration, and monitoring. The graphical map helps even the most inexperienced or novice of administrators to easily visualize the cluster topology and dependencies between applications.

The HP Serviceguard Solutions portfolio

HP delivers high availability and disaster recovery for the missioncritical converged infrastructure with HP Serviceguard Solutions, a suite of complementary software solutions available for HP Integrity servers running HPUX 11i. All components of the suite are designed to work together to meet the variable needs of your business. High availability Serviceguard Solutions for high availability protect against faults within a local network and enabling downtimefree maintenance and upgrades.

We view high availability solutions like Serviceguard as more than just an insurance policy, theyre business enablers. Since we replicate data between two data centers, we can accommodate more frequent maintenance periods by moving critical applications from one data center to the other. This helps us to satisfy the technical requirements of our infrastructure and keep the business running without disruption. And at the same time, we have a solid strategy to recover full operations whether we lose a single server or an entire data center. William J. Lewkowski, CIO, Metro Health

HP Toolkits and Extensions

Enterprise applications and databases can be very complex, and correctly handling when those services crash, hang, or restart is critical to rapid and transparent recovery. Integrating these services into a cluster requires intimate knowledge of the application, and diligence to make sure that your business continuity plan is updated as new versions and platforms emerge. HP Toolkits and Extensions greatly simplify how quickly you can integrate complex applications such as SAP, Oracle RAC, or Oracle EBusiness Suite into a standardized and proven framework. They handle the initial integration of these applications into a cluster as well as ongoing monitoring, fail over and fail back operations of the clustered application. We work jointly with Oracle and SAP to develop these solutions to blend

best practices for the application and availability into a seamless package providing a common, standardized mechanism for managing virtually any clustered application. This means you get it done right and fasterand save up to 93 percent1 on time and effort versus doing it yourself. HP Serviceguard Toolkits and Extensions dont just improve the availability of your critical applications they also improve the overall serviceability and manageability of your entire environment. All Serviceguard Toolkits and Extensions are also integrated into HP Serviceguard Manager for simple, intuitive management and configuration. Serviceguard NFS Toolkit: This Toolkit facilitates the protection of NFS servers within a Serviceguard cluster by monitoring the health of NFS services. In the event of a fault, the Toolkit will try to restart the NFS service on the same server or a different server. Users will be able to continue access to their files as if nothing happened without having to restart anything themselves. Serviceguard Enterprise Cluster Master Toolkit (ECMT): This bundle of toolkits includes Toolkits for Apache, Tomcat, HP CIFS, and databases such as Oracle, IBM DB2, MySQL Server, and Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE). The ECMT delivers rapid implementation; fast, automated failure detection; and restoration of servicesand every Toolkit is fully tested and qualified by HP before it is available in the market. Standardized deployment of these applications with Serviceguard greatly eases manageability, deployment, and troubleshooting, because HP support personnel can quickly work with you to resolve any issues. Standardized deployment makes these environments much easier to support, thereby improving overall stability and continuity.

New! Serviceguard Toolkit for Database Replication Solutions: The new HP Serviceguard Toolkits for Database Replication Solutions combines the existing Serviceguard toolkit for Oracle Data Guard (ODG) and the new Serviceguard toolkit for IBM DB2 HADR. These toolkits greatly simplify the integration of industry standard database replication tools into a Serviceguard cluster. These toolkits complement the high availability provided by ODG or IBM DB2 HADR to minimize downtime and data loss in your data center. These toolkits work in conjunction with Serviceguard to provide additional levels of availability for Data Guard or HADR themselves by monitoring system resources like network, volume groups, file systems, and initiating failover when needed. ODG provides management, monitoring, and automation to protect Oracle databases from failures, disasters, human error, and data corruptions. ODG can be deployed in a Serviceguard cluster. Serviceguard then provides additional levels of availability for Data Guard itself by monitoring system resources like network, volume groups, and file systems, and initiating failover when needed. Plus, Data Guard can be integrated with Serviceguard Solutions for Disaster Recovery to provide disaster protection for Oracle databases as well as for the applications that use the databases The newly introduced Serviceguard toolkit for IBM DB2 HADR provides high availability for both primary and standby databases for DB2 HADR as well as the capability to automatically manage the role of the DB2 HADR database. The HP Serviceguard Toolkits for Database Replication Solutions helps you take advantage of the unique capabilities of the HP mission-critical Converged

Infrastructure mentioned earlier: The ability to achieve high availability and disaster recovery in concert with workload management, capacity planning, utility pricing, and so on to achieve more automation and control over your entire environment, including database replication. Serviceguard Extension for SAP (SGeSAP): SGeSAP works with Serviceguard to automate and accelerate SAP application failover while ensuring transactions are not lost and data is not compromised. SAP upgrades are made painless with integrated change management and comprehensive verification for SAP that is completed on the entire cluster before any changes happen, to detect and prevent erroneous configurations. SAPapproved changes become effective consistently as an atomic operation on the entire cluster at the same time. HP and SAP have been collaborating on Serviceguard Extension for SAP for over 13 years and together we have worked to make sure that both HP and SAP best practices are the foundation of its design. Our codevelopment of this product also means you have a single point of support. Serviceguard Extension for RAC (SGeRAC): Serviceguard Extension for RAC makes sure that you do not have a single point of failure within the entire cluster, which you cant achieve with Oracle Clusterware alone. SGeRAC works in conjunction with Serviceguard to integrate Oracle RAC into a Serviceguard cluster, helping to easily manage the dependency on Oracle Clusterware with a full range of storage management options. The unique architecture of SGeRAC also leverages full aggregate processing power to access the database to increase overall throughput and even provides extra protection for database integrity.

Oracle applauds HP on the new updates to the HPUX 1 v3 1i operating system release, including enhancements to Metrocluster which is fully supported with Oracle Real Application Clusters. Our joint customers can take advantage of these new optimizations and should see broad gains in performance with HPUX 1 v3. 1i Stephen Boyle, Vice-President, Strategic Alliances, Oracle

Serviceguard Extension for Oracle E-Business Suite (SGeEBS): HP SGeEBS delivers fast and foolproof high availability for Oracles EBusiness Suite (EBS) of enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), and supplychain management (SCM) applications relying on Oracle database. SGeEBS handles all of the complexities of Oracle EBusiness Suite for you to automatically and transparently address both planned and unplanned downtime. Unplanned downtime can be particularly challenging for EBS users, such as application or database patches to fix an issue, or HR/Payroll patches to keep the compliance and any hardware and software patches to keep the system secure. These maintenance outages could usually take 312 hours and may require performing them as frequently as every month.2 Serviceguard Developers Toolbox: For other services that you need to guard from downtime, such as custom applications, the Serviceguard Developers Toolbox gives your staff everything they need to quickly and easily write their own Toolkits. The Toolbox contains an easytouse template, comprehensive stepbystep instructions and a test tool to make sure everything is implemented correctly so you have no surprises. The Toolbox also gives you a validation loop back to the HP development team at no charge. The Serviceguard Developers Toolbox reduces overall integration effort by decreasing repetitive tasks and system management so that integration of every application has the same look and feel. Disaster recovery HP Serviceguard Solutions for Disaster Recovery extend the comprehensive protection of Serviceguard beyond the walls of your data center to make sure you remain online even after a catastrophic event.

Serviceguard Extended Distance Cluster: This costeffective solution is a special configuration of a Serviceguard cluster, which allows a cluster to span across two separate data centers for increased availability and protection against an outage that might affect one of the data centers. Serviceguard Extended Distance Cluster (EDC) provides automatic or manual failover capabilities for missioncritical data and applications in data centers up to 100 kilometers apart. It protects geographically dispersed data centers from unplanned downtime caused by system and application failures, operator errors, and local disasters. In addition, it enhances data and application availability. EDC can also be combined with Serviceguard Extension for RAC to create a powerful, lowcost disaster recovery solution tailormade for Oracle Real Application Clusters. This allows all nodes to be fully active but distributed across different sites, facilitating flexible and full utilization of resources via distribution of workloads across the entire cluster. And, should one site fail, all work can be routed to the alternate site extremely quickly for rapid disaster recovery. Metrocluster: Metrocluster replicates data with arraybased mirroring products to provide automatic and bidirectional failover and failback of businesscritical data and applications in data centers located up to 300 kilometers apart. HP Metrocluster now integrates 3PAR Remote Copy for synchronous replication that provides a host independent, array based mirroring solution that enables affordable data distribution and disaster recovery for all applications. Metrocluster reduces business downtime to minutes in the event of a fault, failure, or disaster. By acting as a safety net for critical data and applications in metropolitan data centers. Metrocluster not only increases the level of protection from disastersit also turns the business continuity infrastructure into a productive asset that can be used for daytoday operations. This means that your business continuity infrastructure can also be used for planned downtime activities, such as upgrading applications and

adding and deleting nodes in the cluster. The option of choosing either synchronous or asynchronous replication methods also provide flexibility to match the RTO/RPO needs of your application with the needs of the business. Metrocluster employs a special architecture that delivers static loadbalancing, protection against site outages, and automatic control of any workload, whether its a Web server farm or Oracle RAC. Using this architecture, it is possible, for example, to have RAC instances of a database spread across two data centers without any performance impact due to intersite latencies. This is achieved by having all active instances of the database at a single site and continuously replicating data to the remote standby siteallowing you to scale up and out at the same time, and to improve performance along with availability. Different RAC databases can be running at the standby site (and protected by the primary site) to ensure that hardware is fully utilized, avoiding the waste incurred with an active/standby configuration. Continentalclusters: For utmost disaster tolerance, you can use Continentalclusters to provide high availability within and between two different clusters that can be located far apart. This not only gives you complete protection against any failures within each cluster, but also the powerful ability to have one cluster immediately take over the operations of the other at the simple push of a button. This provides flexibility in where to locate sites, and also delivers full restoration of operations in a matter of minutes, even after a true natural disaster. By monitoring the state of the clusters and providing controlled failover of critical data and applications between sites, Continentalclusters reduces recovery time from days to minutes. HP Continentalclusters can also turn the existing business continuity infrastructure into a productive asset that can be used for daytoday operations. This means your business continuity infrastructure can also be used for planned downtime activities, increasing the return from your business continuity investments.
