Is Archaeology a Science?
This presentation will help you to discover the unique history, archaeology and heritage of the North East Wales area, particularly in the River Alyn, Llay area. It will explain how scientific methods of research are helping us to learn more about the area, with the use of geophysics, surveying equipment, experimental archaeology and Archaeometry. Come and have a look at some of the equipment used in this process and discover whether archaeology is a science or not? This event is suitable for adults and children aged 10+. 6.30pm, NEWI, Plas Coch Campus. Free event, to reserve places contact

Seeing is Believing
Of all the senses we possess, sight is the one on which we rely the most. But how do we go about making sense of what we see? We know that grass is green and the sky is blue but what colour is the rest of the Universe? Seeing is Believing begins by asking how we make sense of what we see and then goes on to demonstrate the different ways in which it is possible to obtain colour from white light. We will also look at light in terms of the electromagnetic spectrum and examine what we could see if our eyes worked at either X-ray or infra-red wavelengths. Join Dr Zbig Sobiesierski to see what is so cool about lasers, how to make a laser waterfall and listen to music travelling at the speed of light! This event is suitable for adults and children aged 10+. 7pm,NEWI, Plas Coch Campus. Free event, to reserve places contact Wednesday 28th March

Cool Science
This is a very interactive, lively sometimes messy talk and demonstration aimed to get people of all ages interested in physics and chemistry by performing low temperature experiments with liquid nitrogen. Three main areas are covered during the talk: solids, liquids and gases; how temperature affects the properties of materials; and chemical reactions. The various experiments include: self inflating balloons, bike tyres and flowers (and smashing them up using a hammer); using low temperatures to get chewing gum out of clothing; making dry ice clouds (using solid carbon dioxide); exploding film canisters; cooking an egg in a frying pan using liquid nitrogen; making light bulbs go on and off using low temperatures; freezing a variety of items including cuddly toys; a twenty pound note and the audiences clothes! This event is suitable for adults and children aged 7+. 6.30pm,NEWI, Plas Coch Campus. Free event, to reserve places contact

Caving Expeditions
Andy Eavis is the leader of many caving expeditions all over the world, particularly concentrating in South East Asia. His talk will outline the story of his team who are said to have discovered more of this planet than any other living people albeit, all under the earth!. The lecture will be illustrated, much of it with dazzling photography taken by Andy over the last 20 years. These will be enhanced by 3D spectacles issued to all the audience. There will be a number of individual expedition stories, including the background to the recent BBC Planet Earth Caves film. Prepare to be overawed by the sheer grandeur and majesty of the Earths caves, some of which are so huge they could be explored by aeroplanes! This exhibition is suitable for adults and children aged 10+. 7pm, NEWI, Plas Coch Campus. Free event, to reserve places contact Saturday 31st March

A look at some digital 3D models and their many uses in museum exhibitions
Laser scanning can provide a high resolution 3D digital image of a heritage object without touching it. These digital models are used in many ways - to recreate the colour of objects, to put them into virtual environments and even to make replicas. This is a chance to see how the Natural Conservation Centre creates these digital models and how they have used them in some recent projects in conservation and in displays in museums around the country. There will be a chance to watch some 3D animations and handle replica objects during the presentation. This event is suitable for adults and children aged 8+. 6.30pm, NEWI, Plas Coch Campus. Free event, to reserve places contact Tuesday 3rd April

Schools Programme
The Wrexham Science Festival is operating a schools programme from 7th March through to 29th March. A variety of free events have been organised for primary and secondary children and college students. The presentations are mainly hands-on and outreach. The sessions are aimed at developing an interest in science and showing how science is at the heart of everything. Some of the topics covered for primary and secondary schools include archaeology, Thomas Telford, team construction, energy, iron and stone, hydropower, flowers, sand science, magnetism, plants, flight, materials in engineering, dyes, photography, dam building, animals and nature, geology, chemical wizardry and movement. Yale College in Wrexham are running a session for GCSE Science students entitled A Geochemical investigation of Limestone which will take place on Wednesday 28th March from 12.45pm-3.15pm in the Science Faculty at Yale College. The aim of the session is to provide an interactive experience of practical techniques beyond GCSE whilst also supporting the WJEC GCSE Science programmes. Tips on analysis and evaluation of investigations will also be given and an opportunity to use ICT applications to present experimental findings. Techniquest@NEWI will be hosting an installation drama called Boy Genius for schools and colleges, for students aged 16-18 from science, humanities and art subjects on Thursday 29th March from 9.30am until 4pm.The session is a collaboration between the Wales Gene Park, the Genetic Interest Group and Gwent Theatre and is an innovative approach to the exploration of contemporary developments in human genetics related to mental health. This activity encourages an appreciation of different views about the complex area of science and assorted social and ethical issues through interactive participation in the story of a young mans experience of mental illness. More details of the activities being run for schools are available from www.wrexhamsf.com
