From the Principals Desk

For those of you who could not attend the presentation day. I have included my speech (in the raw) for you to read. Last night I attended Kellyville Highs presentation ceremony and witnessed a large number of our past students receiving awards. You might ask why I would want to talk about another schools presentation assembly? I believe that once you have been a part of the Beaumont Hills School Community, you are always a part of it and we share in the achievements of all our students past and current. Not only did our students receive academic awards last night, including two Dux of year awards, but I was inspired by the number of our students who received citizenship and service awards. At the recent Gold breakfast I spoke about my belief that academic achievement is one thing, but to be a good citizen and to be able to contribute to the greater good is just as, if not more important, and that sometimes we parents and our politicians become obsessed with academics. We are now even comparing schools based on the achievements of students in one test on one day, when really no two schools are anything alike, because none share the same teaching staff, students, community or the culture that makes the school. I have recently been thinking back to late November 2000, when I was sitting in a room with a panel of people interviewing me for the position of principal at Beaumont Hills School. When I first arrived at our school, the buildings were incomplete; the walls were empty as were the desks and chairs. And so began my journey, to create the thriving living organism that is the Beaumont Hills PS we know and love today. Starting that journey with me were 8 teachers, all enthusiastic about what lay ahead. Some of those staff members are still with me today; Mrs Rowsell, Mrs Peberdy, Mrs Moore and Ms Herbst , have been here from the beginning. I remember the first day we met each other in an empty staff room in a school with no students. That was 10 years ago, and next year will mark the 10th Anniversary of our schools opening. Over those years we have seen the school grow from the 100 odd students in the first year to the now over 600 students which will start the 2010 school year. Along the way I have said hello and goodbye to 4 executive teams. Our executive have moved into promotion positions or to the same position but in another school. This year alone we have said farewell to Mrs OBrien, who is now in Tamworth, Mrs Willett who is now a Regional Maths consultant, Mrs Gillett who is moving to Leonay school and finally to Miss Hill who is off to Killara. I wish them all the greatest success in their new endeavours. We have seen teachers come and go. I welcome to our new executive team Mr Allan Ison, who joins us from Old Guilford PS and to two people whom you know well, Mrs Bromwich and Mrs Hitz- Morton, who will join Mrs McKie and Mrs Dyson on the 2010 executive team. I know that this team will continue to contribute to the development of this great school. We have had a number of babies born over the years and we are expecting our next two additions to the family next year, with both Mrs Walsh and Mrs Green leaving us for maternity leave. We still havent located the chair in the staff room which we accredit with the cause of our baby boom. So what of 2009? This is the year of money. The current federal government has ensured each school across the country has had money to improve infrastructure. We had a 3 million dollar Building the Education Revolution grant. This has gone towards the building of 6 new brick class rooms which are to be ready around Easter 2010. I know the P&C is looking at air conditioning for

We were then given a 200 thousand dollar National School Pride grant. After some painting had been done we had enough money left over, along with your contributions to the building funds, to finally complete the long awaited covered play area over our quadrangle. The work on this project has proceeded slowly, but will be ready when school returns 2010. My desire to ensure that our students have the best we can offer has meant that we have introduced Interactive Whiteboards into the school. The staff have committed professional learning time into ensuring that they are well prepared to implement teaching using these tools. Once again the P&C have contributed by purchasing another 5 of these boards, so that every double learning space has access to an Interactive Whiteboard. Another Federal Government initiative was to give every school a Connected Class room. This room has technology which allows students to work with teachers and students in other schools in Australia and around the world. Although I have been waiting for our room to be ready for the past two years, we finally have the date for installation, Feb 15 2010. The small room adjacent to the library will house this great technological resource and I know many staff members are looking forward to having the opportunity to work in this room. I believe Beaumont Hills is at a fantastic place currently, ready to take on new challenges for teaching and learning, and to continue the great successes already experienced by our school community. I could not be happier with what this living organism looks like at the moment. Our school has the best students of any school, they are confident, capable and courteous, and their successes come not only in the academic area but also in sport, the performing arts and leadership. I believe this school offers every child the opportunity to enjoy success guided by some of the best teachers you could ever employ and as the Principal of Beaumont Hill I am proud of every one of them, the current students here today and past students I see out and about in the community. This brings me back to the beginning of my speech. Sitting in front of the panel interviewing for the position of Principal of Beaumont Hills PS 10 years ago. Just the other day I again sat in front of a panel, this time interviewing for the position of Principal at Beecroft PS. Just as I was successful in becoming the Principal of this wonderful school, I have also been successful in becoming the Principal of Beecroft PS. Although I know it will not be able to compare to Beaumont Hills, I am looking forward to the next journey. I would like to thank each and every one of you for your support over the past years and wish you continued success.

SPORT REPORT How quickly time goes. It seems just like yesterday that 2009 started, and yet here we are at the end of the year with the final sport report. There is some excellent news to report about the end of year sporting activities. There were 3 Beaumont Hills teams represented in the finals of the various CHPSSA summer competitions. Firstly, both the senior and junior Touch Football teams made the finals, but unfortunately both teams were denied a premiership. The junior team actually were level with their opposition at full time, but the opposition team scored in the play offs. The senior team tried hard, but were well beaten 6 -1 by Sherwood Ridge. The junior boys TBall team also made the finals against Northmead, and led for most of the match, but a collapse in the last innings enabled the opposition to get up in the last strike. The boys tried very hard and gave their best effort. I would also like to thank Mrs Bromwich and Ms Milburn for looking after the team while I was absent. Plans are underway for our sporting activities next year, and we shall let you know details as the time approaches. The first big activity is the school swimming carnival, scheduled for Tuesday 9th February at The Oasis Swimming Centre Windsor.
