THERE ARE three members of the Springboro Chamber of Commerce all with summer birthdays that graduated from high school in the year 1962. If you do the math that puts the three of us at age 65 this summer. We have reached Medicare status. This month Jim Helton originally from Cincinnati became a full fledged member, on August 22, Anne Stremanos originally from New York city and the director of the Springboro Chamber joins the select group and on September 13, yours truly, from Miami, Fl., becomes a member. Anne will ride the Zip Line at Camp Kern to celebrate and so will I the following month on my birthday. We all discussed bungee cord jumping, skydiving, underwater cave exploration, ice road trucking and dancing with the stars and decided to go with the Camp Kern zip line saving the others for our 70th, 75th, and 80th celebrations. Happy birthday Jim Helton glad to have you with us for the big 65 celebration.

A Springboro man drowned July 24 off the cost of Hatteras Village in North Carolina. According to the Virginia-Pilot, Robert Cook, 43, drowned while trying to help his three children who were having trouble swimming in the strong riptide currents on the Outer Banks. The Virginia-Pilot reported that Dare County 911 received a call at 5:08 p.m. about a swimmer who was in trouble. The newspaper stated that rescuers found Cook face down in the water. In a story appearring online on OBX Alert, Hatteras Islands chief district ranger John McCutcheon said Cook and members of his group were on the last day of a vacation when they decided to go for a final swim in the ocean. When the three children in the group started getting pulled out by a rip current, an adult male was able to pull two of them safely to shore, but was too tired to go after

He is survived by his wife Joyce, a math teacher at Springboro High School, and three children, Carson, Cassidy and Conner. Funeral service will be Friday, July 31, at, 2 p.m. at Southbrook Christian Church Church 9095 Washington Road, Miamisburg, with Pastor Jerry Ittel officiating. Burial will be in Springboro Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, July 30, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the church. A memorial fund for the family has been established at all Dayton area and Springboro Huntington National Banks.
