Student leader participates in Ayala summit

Noblezada of DLSU has been chosen as one of the participants of the 14th National Ayala Young Leaders Congress (AYLC), a prestigious summit of the countrys top student leaders. The event will be held on February 7-10 in Tagaytay. The AYLC is one of the Ayala Group of Companies programs for national

development. The Congress piloted a mentoring program to nurture its partnership with selected schools in the continuous development of young leaders. Noblezada was chosen among 709 applicants from 105 colleges. She serves as Executive Secretary of the University Student Government.

New home for Asian organization


THE ASIAN POLITICAL AND INTERNATIONAL STUDIES ASSOCIATION (APISA) SECRETARIAT WILL RELOCATE
to DLSU under the International Studies Department (ISD). The executive committee made its decision during its fifth congress last November 24 to 25 held in Taichung, Taiwan. Previously, the secretariat was based at the School of History, Politics and Strategic Studies, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in Kuala Lumpur since its establishment in 2001. Dr. Julio Teehankee, the outgoing president of the congress, led the Lasallian delegation composed of faculty members and graduate students from the Political Science Department (PSD) and ISD. APISA is Asias leading academic organization dealing with political and international studies. Modeled on academic institutions in North America and Western Europe, APISA serves as an academic community for scholars working on Asia. The Association organizes the biannual congress and sponsors a range of academic and professional activities such as book awards, fellowships, regional and international conferences and workshops, and capacity-building.

Environment Week, the Office of the President and Chancellor has established the Green Life Fund. The fund is meant to support the institutions environmental see page 3

Monash emerges victorious in debate olympics


MONASH UNIVERSITY WAS DECLARED the champion of the 32nd De La
Salle-San Miguel World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC) after an exciting Grand Finals at the Philippine International Convention Center last January 3. As world champions, Amit Golder and Kiran Iyer received a trophy and laptops from Lenovo. Golder and Iyers success gave Monash University a back-to-back win in the annual WUDC. The three other teams that qualified to the Grand Finals were from Stanford University (Michael Baer and Faris Mohiuddin), Oxford University (Steph Bell and Jen Coyne), and University of Sydney (Daniel Swaine and Eleanor Jones). ME hosts confab on new educational framework


THE MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT HOSTED the 3rd Philippine Institute
of Mechanical Engineering Educators (PIMEE) Conference last November 18. It was in cooperation with the Mechanical Engineering Society and simultaneously held with the 11th Mechanical Engineering Students Conference. Participants discussed the challenges as well as the preparations for the OBE system, which focuses on developing particular skills for students in the field. Sponsored by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Philippine Chapter, the event was concluded with a fellowship night among ME students. With the theme, Towards an Outcomesbased Mechanical Engineering Education in the Philippines: Leveling Up to a Global State of Play, the conference tackled the outcomes-based education (OBE) system recently implemented for mechanical engineering.

DLSU and KFC hosted the first KFC Youth Innovation Office, a mobile application development competition for the Google Android platform. Students of the College of Computer Studies were invited to take part in revolutionizing the mobile Android market by creating their unique groundbreaking apps. Winning the first prize was the team of Jules Jermyn Ang and August Lee Jr. for their KFC OnTheGo! application. Yuyu Lai and Calvin Onkingco bagged the second prize for their entry KFC Hotshot, while Jan Ivan Cheng and John Christian Soler bagged the 3rd prize for KFC Sales. The awarding ceremony was held on December 19.

Assistance for Sendong victims


A TEAM from De La Salle University
is going to Iligan City this January to undertake an assessment of the damage and capacities as well as the psychosocial intervention needed by individuals and communities affected by Typhoon Sendong (international name: Washi). Members of the team will include Fr. Luke Moortgat and the Universitys Center for Social Concern and Action (COSCA) staff. COSCA also announced that it is still accepting donations Likewise, with the support of the alumni, the school was able to undertake medical and dental services to the evacuees. in cash and check while imposing a temporary moratorium on donations in kind since all major freight services for the disaster sites are prioritizing construction materials and medicines.
