Hoole History Corner
Welcome to this, our regular new feature about Hoole’s long and fascinating history.
Hoole may have been here of many centuries, marched through by Roman Legions and
written about by old monks who warned of the dangers to travellers in “The Valley of
Demons” but, as our photographs show, things around us change all the time and much
that was not so long ago familar passes also into history...

Anybody got memories of any of these? We see

the old City Hospital on Hoole Lane, the Laundry,
also on Hoole Lane, the Rail Club at the end of
Westminster Road and Mr Lloyd’s Fishmongers on
Faulkner Street. The first three have vanished and
been replaced by houses and apartments and a
hardware business now occupies the latter- but we
are fortunate in that a fine fishmongers now trades
from the shop next door!

This is your place! We very much welcome your

contributions: perhaps your memories of the Hoole
of your childhood, reminisciences of people, busi-
nesses and events long gone, cuttings from the
papers- and especially photographs of Hoole as
she was. These will, of course, be treated with
the greatest care and returned to you after being
scanned for publication in this column.
