2012 Spec Market Scorecard as of March 17, 2012

We keep expecting to have to open one of our spec market reports with something along the lines of, 2012s spec numbers have nally started to fall behind 2011s. We may end up there by the end of the spring selling season, but not this month: With two weeks left in the rst quarter, Q1 2012s numbers are already even with Q1 2011. Admittedly, pitch sales have been a bit slower this year than last, but the spec market remains as healthy as ever. By our count, there have been 13 spec sales since the last Spec Scorecard. Here are our favorite highlights from the past four weeks. The studio buyers have bought 40% more specs so far this year than the comparable period in 2011 (14 vs 10). Just like this time last year, Columbia leads the pack (with 3), followed by Universal and Warner Bros. (2 each). Three different agencies sold 2 specs each in the past four weeks (ICM, UTA and Verve). Each of those agencies, plus WME and APA, are doing better so far this year than the comparable period in 2011. WME has outperformed itself (and everyone else) by the widest margin: 9 spec sales in Q1 2012 vs 4 in Q1 2011.

Enjoy the below grids. Names in bold are new since the last Spec Scorecard.
