Merritt is among the 37 locations that may stay open after the Hudson's Bay Co. announced it had reached a tentative deal to sell some of their store locations. Earlier this year, HBC announced it would close all 167 Fields locations across the country by the fall of this year. But now a group of retailers have come together and reached a tentative agreement with HBC to acquire the 37 stores, including Merritt. Last evening, the Coquihalla was closed in both directions again, from Portia to Merritt due to a high avalanche hazard. They weren't estimating when the highway would reopen, but the next update on www.drivebc.ca was sceduled for 9am this morning. A travel advisory had been issued earlier yesterday, after approx. 30cm of snow fell along the route since 2am yesterday. Forecasters were predicting 50cm by the end of Tuesday. With this new snow, this year might well break the record for the deepest snow pack measured at the summit since its completion in 1987. The all-time snowpack record was recorded in 1999 with 346 cm of snow. As of 2 weeks ago, the snowpack was 324 cm, and it's been snowing steadily since March 6. So the record might well have been broken, but the official stats arent in yet. Records show there's been 823 cm of fresh snow fall since Nov. 1, spread over 87 individual snow "events," not including freezing rain.
