Operation Rice Bowl Reflection

Parish Lenten Morning Retreat

Saturday, March 31st, 92pm in Carvlin Hall. The theme will be Walking with St. Francis. Come and join us as we reflect on what we can learn from St. Francis today. Presenter is Fr. Michael. Please call the parish office to register no later than Tuesday, March 27th.

The New Covenant In todays first reading, the prophet Jeremiah describes a new covenant one which is written on our hearts. As Christians, we believe that this new covenant is fulfilled in Jesus. This week through Operation Rice Bowl, we learn about malnourished children and expectant mothers in India whose health has been compromised by their poverty. We pray that we may open our hearts to the needs of the poor and vulnerable. We fast, not merely from our excess, but from our very substance, so that new life may come to all who suffer from poverty, illness and injustice. We give so that CRS-trained health care workers can help improve the lives of women and children throughout the world. Final Collection date for Rice Bowls is April 15th.

Positions Open Applicants Being Accepted

We are looking to fill two part-time positions in the Parish Office by April 1. Both are in the 15-16 hour range. One deals primarily with Bulletin Editing and the other with Payroll and Sacramental Recordkeeping. Both involve receptionist and secretarial duties. To date, we have heard of 4 people expressing interested but have only one formal applicant for the two positions of part time Receptionist, Secretary, and Office Assistants. All applicants: please contact Fr. Charlie by email ASAP to inquire about the positions and set up an interview.

The Pastoral Council Needs You!

The US Council of Bishops describes an effective Pastoral Council as one where the members share an understanding of and commitment to the Parish Mission. This shared sense of mission provides the context for members to carry out their responsibility of being a consultative body to the Pastor by deliberating and advising him on behalf of the community. The St. Philip Neri Pastoral Council is composed of nine members: eight are elected by parishioners and the Pastor serves as a permanent member. Members serve for a two year term and half of the members are up for election each year. So, this year we are again seeking four leaders to engage in serious pastoral planning and who are also willing and able to take action. Three of the current members, whose terms are expiring, plan to run for re-election, however all four slots for the 2012-2014 term are open. Nomination forms will be available during the next three weekend masses. You may nominate yourself or someone else. Please use this coming week to pray on this matter and discern those who would best help us in our continuing mission in southeast Portland. A description of the Council and its work will appear in next weeks bulletin.

Easter Flowers
If you are interested in contributing to the EASTER MEMORIAL FLOWERS please feel free to put your money-offering in an envelope, mark it Easter Flowers, write to whom it is dedicated and who it is from. The envelope can be placed in the regular Offertory basket, taken to the office, sent to the office, or given to Rose Wolfe or Barbara Harrison.

News
Many Thanks and Best Wishes to Mercy (Berning) Rossi Our Parish Secretary and Bulletin Editor Mercy Rossi will be leaving us on April 1, to take a full time position in the private sector. Thank you Mercy, for your four years of service in the Parish. Yours has been the wonderfully warm and welcoming voice and very professional presence in the Front Office, often the first person people meet when they inquire about St. Philip Neri Parish. We wish you the best in your new opportunity.

Come Home for Easter

A parishioner has come up with the idea and will be sending personal cards inviting dormant Catholic family members and friends, as well as former parishioners to "Come Home for Easter" at St. Philip Neri Parish. If anyone else would like some cards to send to family or friends on your own, please contact Fr. Charlie, letting him know how many cards you would like.

Pastoral Corner
Greetings! Last week we recited the Apostles Creed instead of the Nicene Creed. In the Liturgical changes that came at the beginning of Advent there are listed options for some of the prayers. One of those options is reciting the Apostles Creed instead of the re-translated Nicene Creed. Actually, the Apostles Creed has been the standard creed used in Liturgies specifically celebrated for children, like school Masses and First Communions for many years now. The Apostles Creed has been part of our faith since the second century and there are a LOT of stories about its origin. We cannot trace it to one specific source. However, we do know this formula was used from the second century on, for all Baptisms. Of course, instead of just reciting it as one long statement, it was presented in question (priest) and answer (catechumen) form. And you will notice that it is very similar to what we use today for all Baptisms. To refresh your memory: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell;* the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from there he shall come to judge the living and the dead.
