SIX TIPS ON A TAX CREDIT FOR RETIREMENT SAVINGS
If you make eligible contributions to an employer-sponsored retirement plan or to an individual
retirement arrangement, you may be eligible for a tax credit, depending on your age and income.
Here are six things the IRS wants you to know about the Savers Credit:
1. Income limits The Savers Credit, formally known as the Retirement Savings Contributions Credit, applies to
individuals with a ling status and 2011 income of:
Single, married ling separately, or qualifying widow(er), with income up to $28,250
Head of Household with income up to $42,375
Married Filing Jointly, with incomes up to $56,500
2. Eligibility requirements To be eligible for the credit you must be at least 18 years of age, you cannot have been
a full-time student during the calendar year and cannot be claimed as a dependent on another persons return.
3. Credit amount If you make eligible contributions to a qualied IRA, 401(k) and certain other retirement plans,
you may be able to take a credit of up to $1,000 ($2,000 if ling jointly). The credit is a percentage of the qualify-
ing contribution amount, with the highest rate for taxpayers with the least income.
4. Distributions When guring this credit, you generally must subtract distributions you received from your retire-
ment plans from the contributions you made. This rule applies to distributions received in the two years before
the year the credit is claimed, the year the credit is claimed, and the period after the end of the credit year but
before the due date - including extensions - for ling the return for the credit year.
5. Other tax benets The Retirement Savings Contributions Credit is in addition to other tax benets you may
receive for retirement contributions. For example, most workers at these income levels may deduct all or part
of their contributions to a traditional IRA. Contributions to a regular 401(k) plan are not subject to income tax
until withdrawn from the plan.
6. Forms to use To claim the credit use Form 8880, Credit for Qualied Retirement Savings Contributions.

Reed City Hospital has been
named as the newest location
to offer Betty Ford Breast Care
Services, joining the networks
seven locations in the greater
Grand Rapids area.
Betty Ford Breast Care Services
honors the legacy of the late
First Lady Betty Ford, who used
her platform to speak openly
and honestly about her own
breast care diagnosis, inspiring
millions of women to take charge
of their breast health and get a
mammogram.
The hospital has been working
to meet the criteria to be named
a Betty Ford site for a year and a
half, said Kathy Stein, director of
clinical diagnostics at Spectrum
Health Reed City Hospital. The
strict criteria ensures that women
receive high-quality screening and
diagnostic testing at every location.
We share the exact same
processes, equipment, services,
Stein said. Every location
has the latest digital breast
cancer screening and treatment
technology.
The Betty Ford Breast Care
Services site at Reed City Hospital
is the only site outside of the Grand
Rapids area, an area with a much
greater population and a larger
potential client base. The naming
shows a level of expertise that
would usually not be expected from
a small town hospital.
Its not so much about the volume
(of patients), its about the quality
of service, Stein said. We can
provide the same services that
(patients) would get at bigger
(hospitals).
As a Betty Ford Breast Care
Services location, Reed City
Hospital collaborates with
Spectrum Health Lemmen-Holton
Cancer Pavilion in Grand Rapids
to coordinate care. The same
group of radiologists reads imaging
studies whether they originate
in Reed City or Grand Rapids.
Spectrum Healths shared picture
archiving communication system
provides ready access to digital
images. According to the hospital,
ease of access to digital images
is an important advantage when
a woman needs treatment for
advanced breast health issues.
The consistency and coordination
of services helps streamline
the health care experience,
said Elaine Bower, program
administrator, Spectrum Health
Breast Care Services. We are
proud to have Reed City Hospital
extend our reach to women in
Northern Michigan.
The hospital will not hire new
employees or receive new
equipment due to the services
new title, but will operate their
regular service under a new name.
The hospital currently performs
screening mamograms and
diagnostic mamograms along with
other diagnostic imaging services.
A yearly mammogram is one of
the best things women age 40
and older can do for their health,
Stein said. Services are available
by appointment in the diagnostic
imaging department within Reed
City Hospital.

BRPS, MOISD DISCUSS
OPTIONS FOR RE-OPENING

BIG RAPIDS After standing
empty for a year, Eastwood Early
Childhood Center may be given a
new purpose by next school year
as a community early childhood
center.
Big Rapids Public School district,
which owns the building, closed
the school going into the 2011-12
school year as part of its budget
reductions. The Mecosta-Osceola
Intermediate School District
began working with BRPS about
a month ago to discuss the idea
of re-opening the building as a
community center.
What were doing right now is
courting all the players and trying
to make the math add up, said
Curt Finch, MOISD superintendent.
Right now were working on the
legal side of what we can do with
the building. What would kill this
idea is if we couldnt get enough
partners to make it economically
feasible.
The main concern at this point
in the discussion is sorting out
the legalities of housing different
groups in a BRPS building and
having the MOISD run the facility.
A public school building cannot
be used as a for-prot entity.
Administrators from the MOISD
and BRPS are working with Thrun
Law Firm to gure out the details of
the agreement.
Were exploring our options
right now to see if we can work
with the MOISD, said BRPS
Superintendent Tim Haist. We
want to work collaboratively to
provide the best educational
opportunities for all of our
students.
The vision for the early childhood
center would be to offer eight
classrooms for Head Start, Early
Childhood Special Education
Program, Great Start Readiness
Programs Creative Minds
and other educational entities.
Another six classrooms would be
designated for day care groups,
which could include the Mecosta-
Osceola Career Centers Early
On preschool and community
playgroup. Ofce space would be
available for speech, hearing and
vision specialists, the Great Start
Collaborative and other agencies
that would want to partner with
early childhood education.
I dont like to see buildings going
empty, said Karen Schneider,
MOISD director of general
education who helped develop
the idea for re-opening Eastwood.
That building was set up for early
education. ... Its a resource in the
community and were outgrowing
our space at the ISD, so it makes
sense to bring all of early childhood
education together to collaborate.
Sinks, bathrooms, desks and
classrooms in Eastwood, which is
located at 410 N. Third Ave. in Big
Rapids, are set up to accommodate
small children.
BRPS would continue to own the
building, and the MOISD would
be responsible for maintaining
the facilities and coordinating the
services offered there. Outside
entities would lease space and
have the advantage of partnering
with other early childhood
resources in the same building.
The concept is developing a one-
stop shop for parents, Finch said.
Its all about intervention. Its about
getting those kids rst, as early
as possible. When you can get
to a students weaknesses early
and intervene, you can correct the
problem.
Students from different economic
backgrounds and ability levels
would all be in the same building,
Schneider said. The diversity would
benet the children.
This would be a holistic view of
early childhood education and what
it takes to be truly ready to start
school, she added.
At least 150 students could attend
the community center, depending
on how many partners agree to
move into the space. Eastwood
previously housed 270 students.
The cost to re-open the building
and prepare it for operation would
be about $100,000. It costs BRPS
$15,000 to $20,000 a year to
maintain the empty building. BRPS
and the MOISD would divide up
the starter costs, and nding other
groups to occupy the building also
would defray costs. With current
budget projections, Finch said the
project still is about $40,000 short.
Haist said re-opening the building
with the MOISD would be a scally
responsible move in a difcult
nancial time for the district.
Our hope is that it would be
positive for our community and they
will see it as a (chance) to enhance
the opportunities for our students at
Big Rapids and within the MOISD,
Haist said.
Finch expects the MOISD to take
on the bulk of the initial expenses
and hopes to have the center
paying for itself within three years.
Ideally, community agencies, the
Mecosta County Medical Center
and Ferris State University would
get involved to provide social
services and health screenings that
would be benecial for families with
young children.

DIGITAL STREAMING VERSUS
DVD MARKET
(NewsUSA) - Ask any movie studio
executive if the DVD gravy train is
dead, and they will unequivocally
tell you, No. But, they will
also grudgingly admit that DVD
popularity is slowing down.
One only has to look at the demise
of retail giant Blockbuster to see
that its true.
Taking its place, of course, is digital
entertainment -- the downloading
and streaming of movies and
television shows to consumers
computers, Internet-enabled
televisions and mobile devices.
While some in Hollywood may
be uncomfortable with this new
direction, others are looking at it as
an opportunity and potential boon
for growth, marketing and, yes, the
almighty and important bottom line.
Whether studios like it or not,
business currents and consumer
interests have clearly shifted, said
Peter Hoffman, CEO of Seven Arts
Pictures. We can either capitalize
on this trend or stick our head in
the sand and hope everything will
remain business as usual, he
added.
And Seven Arts, Hoffman stated,
has never been one to shy away
from the future.
Which is why the Los Angeles-
based studio released its latest
movie, The Pool Boys, on DVD,
Blu-Ray, iTunes, and streaming
digital distribution. This way,
Hoffman said, we can better
promote The Pool Boys, and all of
our upcoming releases.
So, what of those small plastic
discs that most consumers have
come to know and, if not exactly
love, have certainly grown
accustomed to?
According to the movie studio
industry, DVDs will continue to play
a role, albeit a supporting one to
digital.
DVDs are going to continue to be
a viable part of a studios revenue,
predicted Hoffman. But there is
clearly a strong consumer interest
in digital viewing as well.
To this end, it would seem that
studios would do well to embrace
the age-old adage of give the
customer what they want. As is the
case with Seven Arts The Pool
Boys release, its DVD, Blu-Ray,
streaming and digital download.
This gives consumers an array of
choices, making it a win-win for
movie viewers.
