MANISTEE When you are in the
fourth grade there are many times when
seeing something is actually believing it.
Students at Kennedy Elementary
School had the opportunity this week
to get an up close and personal look at
some of Michigans amphibians thanks
to the efforts of Jim McGrath of Nature
Discovery. He brought up seven different
kinds of amphibians for the students to
view including black snakes, blue racers,
frogs, turtles and more.
The whole idea behind the visit was to
give the students a better understanding
of the role amphibians play in our world.
Many times people go for years without
seeing some of the 52 species located in
Michigan, and McGrath gives the students
not only the opportunity to see them, but
to touch them in some instances.
You can use the knowledge you learn
today when you walk out the door of your
house because now you know about these
things, and how they are in your environ-
ment, said McGrath.
McGrath is a wildlife biologist and a
graduate of Michigan State University
who has been putting on these presenta-
tions for the past 22 years. He puts on an
exhibit that holds the childrens interest,
but also allows them to learn a great deal

only for the kids.
This is all we do,
and we have 42 of the 52
amphibians in Michigan
located by our house
in Williamston, said
McGrath. We do shows
(for) all ages and they
can be tailored to any
level.
We have this huge
captive collection of
reptiles and amphibians
that we use for educa-
tional purposes. We
brought with us today
a sampling of frogs,
salamanders, turtles and
snakes that are native to
this area.
He said that the main
focus of what they do is
to educate people about
the wildlife they might
encounter in the state,
and the proper way to
interact with them. He
also shows audiences the

wildlife that people dont
have to fear, and the best
way to approach them if
they come in contact with
that particular species.
I teach them about how
they are native to this area,
and misconceptions about
them especially about the
snakes versus the reality,
said McGrath.
During his visit to
Kennedy Elementary
school, students had the
chance to touch black
snakes. They also had the
chance to see blue racers
and other snakes up close.
Students also were given
an education on the dif-
ferent types of frogs in the
state and how they differ in
sound and lifestyle.
We want this to be
something that the kids
dont only learn from, but
to go home and teach peo-
ple about this because it is
something not in their nor-
mal schooling. There is a lot
to teach parents about these
things, said McGrath.
It proved to be another
hands-on lesson that goes
beyond the classroom and
teaches students how to see
nature up close and per-
sonal.

damage if your skin isnt
adequately protected.
People at high risk are
often fair-skinned men and
women over the age of 40
who may have accumulated
a significant amount of sun
exposure over the course of
many years.
One in five Americans
will develop skin cancer in
the course of their lifetimeii,
and AKs have the potential
to progress to squamous cell
carcinoma, the second most
common type of skin can-
cer. Its important to check
your skin year-round and
note any changes in texture
and colorthese changes
may be age spots, irritation
or dry skin, but they may
also require more attention.

National Institutes of
Health, specific characteris-
tics of AK includeiii:
nA skin patch or
growth, often limited to one
area, that begins as flat and
scaly;
nPresence on the face,
scalp, back of the hands,
chest or other sun-exposed
areas;
nA color that can be
gray, pink, red or the same
color as the skin;
nLater development
into a hard and wart-like or
gritty, rough and sandpa-
pery surface;
nIn some cases, the
lesions may be easier to feel
than to see.
