Nirmal Gram Puraskar for Dakshina Kannada

'Dakshina Kannada' became the first district in the Karnataka to be chosen for the Nirmal Gram Puraskar. The "Nirmal Gram Puraskar" award is instituted in 2003 by the Union Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation. The award carries and incentive amount of Rs. 50 lakh for District Panchayats with population of above 10 Lakh. The Nirmal Gram Puraskar is being awarded at the gram panchayat, taluk and district levels as an incentive to eradicate open defecation in villages. Also, Mangalore and Sullia taluks have been chosen for the block-level Puraskar. The Govt has laid down guidelines for spending the award money. The Award Money should be used for solid waste management and upgrading sanitation facilities.

In collaboration with RailTel and Telibrahma, the Bangalore Division of the South western Railway (SWR) has launched BluFi services in the City Railway station. BluFi: (Bluetooth + WiFi) An unparalleled compounding of Bluetooth application and Wi-Fi connectivity. Via simply switching on Bluetooth on their mobile phones BluFi will permit passengers to receive a host of information, like videos, downloadable games, wallpapers etc and also Railway information so on. Free Wi-Fi connectivity has also been provided by RailTel as part of their RailWire retail broadband initiative.
