1. Takshila the first university


Education was also encouraged from the ancient days. Takshila the first university of the world was set up in India in about 700 B.C. The University of Nalanda was also established in India during 4th Century in India. More than 10,000 students studied over 60 subjects from all over the world.

2. Science and Mathematics


India progressed to a great extent in science and mathematics. The study of Calculus, Algebra and Trigonometry originated in India. In 11th Century Sridharacharya used Quadratic Equations. The Decimal System and the Place Value System developed in India in about 100 B.C. The Indian mathematician Budhayana first calculated the value of 'Pi'. He also explained the concept of the Pythagorean Theorem.

3. Bhaskaracharya
Bhaskaracharya of India calculated the approximate time that earth takes on its orbit to complete one revolution round the sun. The art of navigation developed in India about 6000 years ago in river Sindh.

4. Medical science
In the ancient age India also progressed in medical science. Charaka, the Father of Medicine experimented with Ayurveda about 2500 years ago in India. The use of anesthesia was known in the ancient period. Sushruta of India is regarded as Father of Surgery. About 2600 years

ago, he with his team conducted some complex surgeries. Meditation and Yoga originated in India.

It is interesting to know that in the last 10,000 years, India never invaded any country. The name of the country India has derived from the Indus river.

6. Civilization
When many cultures were only nomadic over 5000 years ago, Indians established Harappan culture in Sindhu Valley known as Indus Valley Civilization.

India also advanced in sport activities. The game of chess was invented in India. The game of Snakes and Ladder was conceptualized by Gyandev in 13th Century B.C. In later centuries the game underwent a number of changes. The cricket ground located in Chail, Himachal Pradesh is the highest cricket ground in the world. It was constructed in 1893.

The Baily Bridge constructed in the Ladakh Valley is the highest bridge in the world. The Vishnu Temple built in Tirupathi is considered to be the largest destination in the world for pilgrimage. And it is really interesting to know that India has the largest number of post offices in the world.

9. Martial Arts
Yoga has its origins in India and has existed for over 5,000 years.

Martial Arts was first created in India, and later spread to China in Shaolin Temple. The first Guru to teach Shaolin Kung Fu "BuddhaDharma" (Damo in Chinese) travelled China where he taught Buddhism and Martial Arts (yoga techniques) which today is known as Qi Gong and Shaolin Kung Fu (Shaolin Wu-Shu).

10. Shelter
India provides safety for more than 300,000 refugees originally from Sri Lanka, Tibet, Bhutan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, who escaped to flee religious and political persecution.

In today's world India is seen as a developing country, struggling with poverty and development, India was the richest country on earth before the invasion of Britain in 17th century.
