Summer 2011 Programs for Children


Children 3-8 years old
Weekly themed programs 9:00 - noon $130 per week
(8:30 early drop off and 12:30 late pickup available)
Activities in our weekly sessions are arranged around a central theme. Throughout the morning, children will engage in indoor and outdoor hands-on experiences related to the theme, including art, crafts, science, physical recreation and more. Enrollment is for one or more five-day (full) weeks only. One-half of tuition is due at registration.

Children 7 and older


Older children can explore technology, art, magic, forensics, dance and more in these week long enrichment programs. Register for as many weeks as you'd like. One-half tuition is due at registration.

COOKING WITH CURIOSITY


$130
Back by popular demand! Cooking a four course meal in four days. Students will make drinks, appetizers, a main course, and a scrumptious dessert in one short week. Bring your appetites!

CARTOONING AND MORE


Ages 8 and up 1:00-3:30 $125
Come draw cartoons, caricatures and comic strips! Learn the history of cartooning and about cartoonists of yesterday and today. Take part in a Comic Jam. Sharpen your drawing skills while learning to draw the language of funny. Turn your doodles into your own cartoon character and star him/her in a comic strip. Sculpy will also be used to bring characters to life. Bring a photo of yourself and/or your pet to the first class.

WEEK 2: July 11th- July 15th


HAWAIIAN HULLABALOO
Ages 3 to 8 9:00 noon $130
Aloha everyone! Have you ever wanted to Hula or make your own grass skirt? This week will get your lava flowing as we explore the culture of Americas most beautiful islands.

IMPROVISATION 1.0 CLASSES


FOR THE YOUNGER CHILD: Ages 7 to 9 FOR THE OLDER CHILD: Ages 10 to 12 1:00-2:00 3:00-4:00 $100 $100
This fun and creative improvisational class will promote interaction with others to foster cooperation and communication. Your child will learn basic techniques which will lead to increased confidence and self-esteem, better listening and speaking, enhanced brainstorming and greater emotional intelligence. A 30 minute show on Friday will be open for parents and interested family members. (This class is suitable for aspiring actors or any child who would like to feel more comfortable in front of an audience.)

KNITTING CLASSES
INTRO TO KNITTING: Ages 5 to 7 KNITTING : Ages 8 to 12 1:00-2:30 2:30 to 4:00 $120 $120

Come join us for some fun with wool! Our younger children will participate in cleaning, carting and dying wool sheered from local sheep. They will hear stories and then create woolen pictures out of ideas from the stories told. We will use natural dyes made from local flowers. They will also learn to finger knit and bring home surprise creations. The older children will whittle their own wooden needles and learn the basics of knitting. First projects can be a pouch for treasures, a scarf, a doll sweater or a pencil case. (Week 2 continued on the other side)

WEEK 3: July 18th- July 22nd


HANDS ON SCIENCE FUN!
Ages 3 to 8 9:00 noon $130
Get your lab coat and goggles ready! Enjoy fun science experiments, make cool projects, learn amazing science facts, show friends & family what you've discovered and most importantly, have fun!

CSI AND FORENSICS : WHO DUNNIT?


Ages 8 to 12 9:00 noon 4 DAYS: July 19th- July 22nd $110
Learn how to secure a crime scene, collect and study evidence using the latest technology, and then put it all together to solve a crime. Each day students will learn ways to catch a criminal as they explore the career opportunities in forensics and criminal justice. Topics include evidence collection, rolling and lifting finger printings, sketching a suspect using FACES, drawing a crime scene, and much more. Learn how the Real CSI experts examine clues and solve crimes.

IMPROVISATION 2.0 CLASSES (must have taken improv 1.0 class)


FOR THE YOUNGER CHILD: Ages 7 to 9 FOR THE OLDER CHILD: Ages 10 to 12 1:00-2:00 3:00-4:00 $100 $100
This workshop will focus in-depth on emotions, characterization and communications skill-building. We will have fun creating imaginative scenes and responding with Yesand. Cooperation and team work will be developed. Comedic techniques will also be discussed. This workshop is suitable for any child seeking a higher level of social awareness and empathy. A 30 minute show will be presented on Friday, July 22nd for parents and interested family members.

OPEN ART STUDIO with Marilyn Parker


Ages 8 to 13 1:00-4:00 $130
During the week students will explore various media such as papier mache, painting, sculpture, printmaking and origami. Each day will be devoted to a featured project and as time allows a tie-in activity will be added. Lessons are tailored to each child's abilities and interests with lots of room for creative expression!

WEEK 4: July 25th- July 29th


HOLIDAY-A-DAY
Ages 3 to 8 9:00 noon $130
Why wait all year when you can celebrate your birthday, Halloween, Valentines Day, and New Years in one jam packed week! We may even invent our own holiday to fill out the week.

YOU CAN DO MAGIC


Ages 7 to 10 1:00-4:00 $135
Alan Edstrom is considered by many to be one of the most gifted teachers of magic around, and now YOU can learn how to do some awesome close-up magic with sponge balls, cards, coins, and everyday objects! As Alan says, Everyone likes being fooled by magic, and simple tricks are a powerful learning tool to communicate, engage, and entertain.

WEEK 5: August 1st - August 5th


GOOD VERSUS EVIL: IMAGINATIONS RUN WILD
Ages 3 to 8 9:00 noon $130
From witches and wizards to the superheroes of our favorite comic books, this week will be filled with adventure, magic, and the myths behind them.

GET UP AND DANCE


Ages 8 to 12 9:30 noon $130
Come explore the many styles of contemporary dance! Instructors from Creative Dance Arts will present Jazz, Hip Hop, Modern and Improvisation. Each day will begin with a warm up, progressions across the floor and choreography. We will end the week with a mini performance of routines we have learned! Wear comfortable, stretchy clothing and bring your sneakers!

ROARING INTO ROBOTS: WHATS NEXT?


Ages 8 to 14 1:00-4:30 $285
This exciting class teaches you how to build and program the LEGO Mindstorms NXT robots, the coolest robot available. You will use your new skills to meet such challenges as reacting to intruders, moving objects to different locations, stinging an intruder with a robot tail, or beating your opponent at LEGO Sumo, a BBB favorite. You dont need any experience with robotics or programming to begin your robotic adventure. All robot classes will be taught with the new LEGO Mindstorms NXT robot system that includes a new programming language, a new building system, and new sensors, including a sound sensor and ultrasonic sensor.

ART IN THE ANCIENT WORLD
Ages 8 to 13 1:00-4:00 $130
Come discover and revisit the art of ancient civilizations and see how they influenced art in our contemporary world. We will explore some of the history of civilizations such as Greece, Rome and the Mayans as we create mosaics, papier mache vessels, paintings and more. Each lesson will be tailored to the age and abilities of each child. Join us as we make the ancients come alive with our interesting artwork!

WEEK 6: August 8th- August 12th


DINOSAUR DISCOVERY
Ages 3 to 8 9:00noon $130
Just how big was a brachiosaurus? Come and explore in our yard for dinosaur bones and fossils, and learn more about prehistoric times.

COMPUTER VIDEO GAME CREATION


Ages 8 to 14 8:30-noon $285
If you think playing computer games is fun, think what a blast learning to program your own games will be. Your imagination is the limit as you use GameMaker software to create maze, strategy, and a variety of other types of games. Youll learn about creating sprites, objects, events and actions. Design a room, make it look the way you want, add objects and play your game. Well teach you how to display health, lives, score, splash screens and high score tables. Using drag and drop programming, youll be creating exciting, professional looking games you can play with your friends. You can keep making games when you get home as the software is an inexpensive download from the Internet. If you think youve got a great idea for a game, you want to see what it would be like to be a game designer, or you just think computer games are fun, this class is for you. You must be experienced using a By Bits, Bytes & Bots Computer Adventures computer to take this class.

MAD SCIENCE
Ages 8 to 13 1:00-4:00 $125
Codes and Messages,, the Science of Sport, Earth Awareness, Nature, and Space are the topics explored this week, Discover how to send secret messages to your friends using special codes! Learn how to talk with numbers, just like computers, and create your very own code "crackers"! Play the nature scavenger hunt that combines science exploration with the animal kingdom! Explore the mysteries of the solar system. On your mad science space mission you will discover how astronauts live and work in space and learn about the sun, the moon, the stars, and gravity. Its a mad busy week!

ADVANCED ROBOT CHALLENGES


Ages 8 to 14 1:00-4:30 $285
Well challenge your engineering and programming skills with the LEGO Mindstorms NXT robot. Want to learn how to program a robot with a bluetooth cell phone? Build a walking bot? Use the new ultrasonic sensor to react to movement or the sound sensor to react to different sounds? Program the new servo motors for precise movement? The possibilities and challenges are endless. You can work on individual challenges, challenge others, or pair up and work as a team. This course is for students who have experience with building and programming LEGO Mindstorms robots. Students should have a basic understanding of how to use sensors, motors and repeat blocks. This class provides new challenges each session and can be taken multiple times. All robot classes will be taught with the LEGO Mindstorms NXT robot. The new robot system includes a new programming language, a new building system, and new sensors, including a sound sensor and ultrasonic sensor. *Robots are for use by students in class only. The robots are expensive, and students will not be able to take them home

WEEK 7: August 15th- August 19th


IN THE JUNGLE, THE MIGHTY JUNGLE!
Ages 3 to 8 9:00 noon $130
Life in the jungle would be fun, swinging from vine to vine like a monkey. We will discover the hidden animals of the worlds jungles, learn about the rainforest, and even talk about the impact the jungles have on our lives.

ART-MATH CONNECTION
Ages 8 to 13 1:00-4:00 $130
Summer is nearing to an end and it is time to "put our thinking caps back on"! Math concepts such as fractions, geometry and linear perspective will be introduced/reviewed in an art environment. Each lesson is tailored to the individual child's learning level. If you've previously taken this class with me, this time there will be a completely different set of projects! Join us and discover a fun new angle on art and math.
