Ewcort Ib5 LSD Change
Ewcort Ib5 LSD Change
the mk5/6 escort's ib5 gearbox. The S2 gearbox as a whole will not fit and although the S1 gearbox will, it does have smaller bearings and as expected are pretty rare.
So upgrading your ib5 'box is a good option but first you need to source a LSD, so be sure of what your buying

On the left is a standard open diff and on the right is the LSD.
Now this is ok provided the diff is already removed, but it may not be, so heres how to check its a slipper:
1. If you look from each end (where the driveshafts locate) you will see the LSD has a 10mm through hole where the open diff does not. 2. If it is on a car still, then jack and support the front end and rotate the driveshaft. A LSD will make both shafts rotate the same direction (where-as open diffs rotate the shafts in opposite directions)
Also be aware that fiesta rs turbos didn't have a LSD as standard but could of been upgraded (check as above)

To achieve this upgrade I think you need to be fairly conversant with a spanner, accordingly I have given this a 5 spanner rating

Now there is a few variations of the ib5 with front starters on pre '95 models and reverse sensor located beneath the front mount on pre '97. Mine is a '98 so has a reverse sensor plug on the front and a rear starter, internally I believe they are basically the same
Ok you've got your box, drained the oil and pulled the shafts..
Remember as you remove each part to lay it out on your bench as it came off, this will help when you refit

This casting can now be removed and should look like so. Now to remove the diff, the two gear stacks need to be lifted out. Lift both at the same time and wiggle them to get them free, place to one side. The diff is now free to be removed and the ring gear needs to be changed over to the LSD. Hold in a good vise and use the breaker-bar to remove bolts then refit the LSD with ib5 gear

(Photo above has plate clip removed to show position of pins beneath)
Once the diff is dropped back in, get both gear stacks back into the selectors and align the selectors on the pin arrowed green, remember to get the reverse pin arrowed red to clip the black arm far side (this is held in place by the noted toggle earlier) The gear stacks will need a fair deal of wiggling and swearing to get them back in position
Now your on the home straight! Refitting is the reverse of removal, fitting new gaskets as you go!
