 How to eat more locally and sustainably...
Each of us takes part in and can influence our food system.
Shifting toward a more local and sustainable diet doesn't have to
be all or nothing. Some ways to get started:
Visit a nearby farmers' market. Plant something you like at
home – whether it's herbs on your windowsill, tomatoes in a pot,
or a variety of vegetables in your yard. Ask for local foods at your
grocery store, and find out what that store means by “local.”Try a
restaurant that features locally grown food. Buy extra of your
favorite foods when they are in season and preserve them to eat
Eating locally and sustainably can increase... later. Plan one meal a week around locally grown vegetables.

Growing Practices
Growing practices are important for healthy food and a healthy planet; they can also be confusing. Different terms are used. some
are regulated, and some are not. asking questions and developing a relationship with the grower and/or the market coordinator
can help in understanding them. While we support sustainable food production, sustainability is a goal, not a destination.

(B) Biodynamic agriculture: A unified approach to agriculture which tends
the soil and the farm as living organisms, considers animals an integral part of a living
ecosystem, and strives to bring community into farming.
(C) Conventional: How most farms have operated over the past 50-plus years.
Commercial fertilizers and synthetic chemicals are probably used.
(CNG) Certified Naturally Grown: A grassroots certification program for
farmers to sell locally and directly to customers. Its standards are based on the National
Organic Program but require improved livestock living conditions and more explicit access
to pasture.
(CRCC) Crop rotation, use of cover crop: Help hold the soil, renew fertility,
and reduce pests.
Animals and their treatment:
(FR) Free Range: At a minimum, animals have access to an outside area.
(GF) Grass fed: Animals are mainly raised on pasture instead of being confined in feed-
lots and fed grain. Grass-finished animals are raised entirely on pasture and are fed stored
hay and grass over the winter.
(HB) Heritage breeds: Traditional breeds raised by farmers before industrial agri-
culture drastically reduced breed variety.
(HF) Hormone free: Growth hormones are not used to force an animal to gain
weight, increasing incidences of disease and leading to the routine prescription of antibi-
otics. (Hormones are not permitted in chicken production.)

(IPM) Integrated Pest Management: Matches insect and plant information (HR) Humanely Raised: Animal stress is limited through sufficient space, shelter,
with available pest-control methods to prevent unacceptable levels of pest damage and gentle handling.

avoidance of most synthetic chemical inputs, genetically modified organisms,
irradiation, and the use of sewage sludge; chemical free for 3 years; periodic inspections, etc.
(P) Permaculture: A design system for creating sustainable human environments
which, for food production, begins with soil building and focuses on perennials.
(PF ) Pesticide Free: Limits the use of pesticides on seeds and plants throughout the
crop lifecycle.
(SA) Soil amendments such as use of compost and nonsynthetic
fertilizers: Building soil fertility.
(T) Transitional: Moving to organic.

CSA (Community Supported Agriculture)

Community supported agriculture (CSA) promotes ecologically sound, socially equitable agriculture. Here's how it
works: a community of shareholders pledges to support a farm operation. Shareholders pay an advance fee for the grow-
ing season to cover the costs of running the farm. In return, they receive shares of the farm’s bounty throughout the grow-
ing season. The more bountiful the harvest, the more food each shareholder receives. Shareholders also share the risks of
farming, such as unfavorable weather and pests.
In some CSAs, the requirement or opportunity to work on the farm also provides members with the satisfaction of
reconnecting to the land and participating directly in food production. In addition to having working capital in advance,
growers benefit by receiving better prices for their crops, gaining some financial security, and being relieved of much of
the burden of marketing.
