Application invited for Junior Planetarium Engineer/Junior Scientific Officer

Bangalore Association for Science Education (BASE) which administers the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium (JNP), Bangalore, is an autonomous body registered under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act, funded by Department of Science and Technology, Government of Karnataka. The objectives are science popularization, non-formal science education and related activities. Apart from the production of planetarium shows, it conducts science exhibitions at least twice a year and several workshops for science teachers and students. There is a Science Park with dynamic exhibits in the campus. JNP seeks talented young personnel capable of working in a multitasking environment. It invites applications for the post of Junior Planetarium Engineer (JPE) and Junior Scientific Officer (JSO) for the planetarium. The posts of JPE and JSO have a good career growth as per the Cadre and Recruitment Rules (C&RRs) of BASE. The associated duties reflect ample scope for incorporating creativity and introduce novel concepts.

(1) Junior Planetarium Engineer (JPE) - One Post I Class - B.E./B.Tech Electronics/Instrumentation from an approved University. Experience in using/servicing electronic and optical instruments, computer literacy, aptitude for working in multitasking environment. Essential: Desirable: Knowledge of Kannada Interest in astronomy, handling telescopes, science popularization with hands on activities/communication skills/exposure to classical music, art and literature.

Duties of JPE:(1) (2) Organising maintenance of building, electrical installations, substation, diesel generator sets Coordination in the production of planetarium shows includes interaction with scriptwriters, artists, musicians apart from audio and video editing in Kannada and English. Managing the planetarium show requires maintenance of planetarium projectors, slide projectors, video, audio systems, UPS A/C plant and ticketing machines. Assistance in organising events like public viewing of celestial objects and science exhibition which includes overseeing fabrication of dynamic science models, operation of telescopes manual and computerized.

(2) Junior Scientific Officer (JSO) - One Post I Class - M.Sc. in physics or related topics from an approved University with aptitude for teaching Essential: Desirable: Knowledge of Kannada, Basic astronomy B.Ed, computer literacy, acquaintance with modern teaching methods including programming both in Kannada and English. Aptitude for developing innovative experiments, teaching aids, communication skills, exposure to music, art and literature.

Duties of JSO:(1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) Assistance in production of planetarium shows script writing, compiling visuals, audio recording and video editing both in English and Kannada. Assistance in conducting workshops for children, preparation of teaching aids and simple experiments for exhibitions, testing models for science park. Preparation of write-ups for posters and exhibits in English and Kannada. Operation of telescopes and binoculars both manual and computerised, coordination with amateur astronomers. Interaction with children, laypersons and media. Requires basic knowledge of night sky-watch, for interaction with public on celestial events.

The gross monthly emoluments for both the posts in this pay scale would be about Rs.19,000-00 inclusive of all allowances which is likely to be improved after the VI Pay Commission. A higher starting basic will be considered for deserving candidates.
