Opta Minerals re believed to be arson


Suspect a former Bimac employee

Firefighters responded to a structure fire Saturday night believed to be the

result of arson at Opta Minerals, 345 E. Main St., also known previously as Bimac Inc. by residents. Milan firefighters and police responded to a call at 10:58 p.m., according to the Milan Police Department. The cause of the fire is believed to be arson, according to police. Sgt. Mike Couture said

as of about noon Monday the suspect had not been arrested for arson, but he has been identified. The Monroe Evening News identified the suspect as a 27-year-old Milan man who is a former Bimac Inc. employee. The man was lodged in Washtenaw County Jail after being arrested on a warrant out

of Pittsfield Township for destruction of police property in a separate case. The man, the newspaper reported, allegedly set the fire at Opta Minerals after he reapplied for employment but was turned down. Milan police and the Monroe County arson team are working together on the investigation.

Milan Fire Department Captain Sean Jenkins said when firefighters responded to the fire there was heavy smoke coming out of the doors and windows of the facility. It was a little bit of a stubborn fire, but it was no problem getting it out, he

he Milan Beautication Commission played host to Milan High School and middle school students who spent their school day wielding paint brushes decorating storefront windows on Milans East Main Street. Owner Dave Snyder intends to renovate the entire 200 block of buildings that he recently purchased with hopes of revitalizing the downtown area. He welcomed the teens sprucing up the buildings, while he is busy with construction plans.

The Milan Beautication Commission sponsored the beautication project. Building owner Dave Snyder welcomed the teens artistic talents used on his buildings in downtown Milan.
