RIPROSAT ECUADOR First detection of the very virulent form of Infectious Bursal Disease Virus (vvIBDV) in Peru

Marco Cisneros T. DMVZ MSc.

INTRODUCTION
IBDV is widely present in Peru, classical and variant (both A and E) strains are well recognized.
(Icochea 2001, Banda 2006, Ceva findings until 2006)

Since 2004 clinical cases of Bursal Disease were reported in Puerto Maldonado region (south east and far away from poultry producer areas). In August 2007 the region was visited and bursa samples were collected High mortalities between 28 35 d.o.
Layer pullets up to 60% Broilers up to 30%

Samples were taken from three different farms

19 d.o. layers pullets apparently normal 35 39 d.o. broilers with history of clinical IBD at 28 days 27 31 d.o. broilers showing clinical signs of the disease.

Commercial Pullets (19 d.o.)

No clinical signs or lesions indicative of IBDV infection

4

Broilers (35 39 d)

Whitish diarrhea (the only clinical sign) Muscular hemorrhages (most frequent lesion) Some lesions in kidneys and proventriculus No macroscopic lesions in bursas (the bursa shown in the picture is not normal, it is edematous!

Broilers (2731 d)

Depressed birds, ruffled feathers, prostration, fallen wings, whitish diarrhea Mortality rising dramatically
6

Swollen and edematous bursas Extensive hemorrhagic areas in bursas and alterations in folds
7

Muscular hemorrhages (more frequently observed lesion) Proventriculitis, spleen lesions

DIAGNOSIS
Bursa samples tested at three different labs for molecular detection and characterisation of IBDV.
