Students Travel to Honduras

For Molly Miller, travel to Honduras has become somewhat of a family mission. Mollys cousin, mother, sister, and aunt have all volunteered with the Honduran Mission Team of NH, providing medical services at a clinic in Juticalpa, Department of Olancho, Honduras. I went on my first trip to Honduras last year, in February of 2011 and fell in love with the country, said Molly, a biological sciences major at UNH Manchester. This February, Molly recruited Kellie Howard, a friend and classmate, to join her on a trip to Honduras. I heard Mollys enthusiasm about the trip, she made it sound incredible. Also, it seemed like one of the most financially affordable ways to

get the experience I was looking for, said Kellie, a biological sciences and psychology major at UNH Manchester. The experience was inspiriting to both women. Molly recounts an interaction she had helping a mother with a very sick infant. The mother was directed to the local hospital for emergency care, but later returned to update the clinic on the infants condition. Molly said, This is one of the most rewarding parts, being able to see the condition of someone improve since many people who visit our daily clinics we never see again. Kellie said one of her most memorable moments was when she found out that one of their interpreters was interested in going

Uncovering UNH Manchesters History

History students Shawn Kraus and Jess Green will be working this year with UNH Archivist Elizabeth Slomba in the Dimond Library to document the history of the Universitys urban campus in Manchester. When asked what hes eager to uncover, Kraus said, I have a lot of questions about the beginning and why the school never followed through with its plan to expand to a larger campus. I also hope that this will provide information that can be used to instill pride in students and alumni of UNH Manchester by providing a detailed history of this fine institution. Kraus has found the internship a great launching pad for his career interest in museums and libraries, either as a librarian or archivist. The work that the people in the Dimond Library do is extraordinaryI feel that I can gain the information I need to make the decisions about where I see my future going, said Kraus.

Jennifer Silva Named Newman Civic Fellow

Campus Compact has honored 162 students from 32 states as 2012 Newman Civic Fellows. Among the honorees is Jennifer Silva of UNH Manchester. The Newman Civic Fellows Awards recognize inspiring college student leaders who have worked to find solutions for challenges facing their communities. Campus Compacts member college and university presidents from across the country have nominated 162 college student leaders for the 2012 class of Newman Civic Fellows. These students are demonstrating a personal commitment to creating lasting change for the better in their communities. Through service, community-based research, and advocacy, the 2012 class of Newman Civic Fellows are making the most of their college experiences to better understand themselves and the root causes of some of the most pressing social issues that challenge us all. Jennifer Silva, a senior in the psychology program at UNH Manchester, demonstrates the type of civic engagement that sets an example for others, shining a positive light in a time when negativity has dominated much national conversation. Silva helped revive the student club, Students in Action to serve families at the food pantries of New Horizons and Meals on Wheels, and to serve refugees at a family fun night in Manchester through the B.R.I.N.G IT program. She also helped start a service day for students first entering UNH Manchester. She provides after school homework help at Langdon Mills, helps a senior citizen every week, and works at Family Outfitters (run by Families in Transition). Silva is a resident of Derry, NH and a graduate of Pinkerton Academy. As a Newman Civic Fellow, Silva will join a network of Fellows around the country. Together sharing ideas and tools through online networking the Fellows will leverage an even greater capacity for service and change, and will continue to set examples for their classmates and others. These students represent the next generation of public problem solvers and civic leaders. They serve as national examples of the role that higher education canand doesplay in building a better world, notes Campus Compact Board Chair James B. Dworkin, chancellor at Purdue University North Central.

Far-Away Georgians Visit the Millyard

Written By Herb Pence Five college leaders from the Republic of Georgia, located on the eastern shore of the Black Sea, visited the UNH Manchester campus in March. They were on a U.S. Department of State sponsored visit to the U.S. The trips purpose was to expose them to university student governance and communication. The delegation included Anna Dularidze, Deputy Director of the Student Alpinist Club, Ilia State University; Aleksandre Kotetishvili, studying to be a neurosurgeon and a member of the Students Self-Government at Tbilisi State Medical University; Giorgi Monavardisashvili, coordinator of Students Employment Center of Georgia, a nongovernmental organization; Tamar Mrevlishvili, a student in the Department of Banking and Finance, Batumi State University; and Nino Shengelaia, a member of Student SelfGovernment, Tbilisi State University. They are part of a premier group of 4,500 international visitors selected annually to learn more about specific aspects of U.S. life. Each group spends between 15 and 21 days in the United States, visiting three to five cities across the country. The delegation met with Ginger Lever, director of Marketing & Community Relations, and Elizabeth Brideau, a student intern, to learn more about the Warmth from the Millyard project. The Georgians were excited about the concept, as their country experiences cold weather, too. It is a project which can easily be implemented on their campuses. This group was funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State. Members were hosted nationally by Meridian International Center and locally by the World Affairs Council of NH.

10th Annual Research Conference

Written by Lauren Girolimon, Graduate Assistant in Teacher Education Program The Education Department at UNH Manchester will host its tenth annual research conference on Saturday, May 12, 2012. The conference, named Communities of Inquiry, Inquiries in Communities (formerly known as the Teachers as Researchers Conference) is a conference highlighting the work of educators, professionals, and community members towards enhancing the possibilities for youth and their families, in the communities they serve. The focus and underlying theme of the conference is to honor teachers in their expanded role as active researchers in their field. Many of the presenters are UNH Teacher Education Interns, presenting their colloquium projects they completed as part of the year-long teaching internship. Community members and educators in local schools will also be sharing their work in the field. The expansion of the conference has also provided opportunities for other departments at UNH to present the work they are doing in the community as well. This years keynote speaker is Dr. Karen Gallas. She taught for more than thirty years in urban, suburban and rural public schools as an early childhood and elementary teacher. She has also worked with children and adults as a psychotherapist in community mental health settings. Dr. Gallas has written many articles and four books on the role of literacy learning across all disciplines, on science language and inquiry, on the arts as a vehicle for learning, on the process of conducting teacher research, and on the role of imagination in literacy learning. We invite classroom teachers, prospective teachers, administrators, counselors, social workers, community agency directors, UNH students, and anyone interested in the role and formation of school-universitycommunity partnerships to attend. In addition to presentations, there will be many opportunities for attendees to network and learn about the work that is occurring to promote the success of the communities of greater Manchester. The Communities of Inquiry, Inquiries in Communities Conference will take place on Saturday, May 12 and begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. Contact Lauren Girolimon (let2@unh.edu) or visit manchester.unh.edu/campuslife/events/ conference-registration to register today. For the rest of the day we let her help us and use the automatic blood pressure cuff to take BP and then showed her other things we were doing and allowed her to help. She was so thankful, it was amazing, said Kellie. Molly said the experience opened her eyes to the possibility of working in international healthcare someday. The little things we take advantage of, such as access to vitamins, Tylenol, and toothbrushes, are not even options in parts of the rural third world countries. For what little they have, they are grateful for what they do have. Molly graduates in 2013 and plans to pursue a masters degree in physician assistant studies, with a focus in womens health and obstetrics. Kellie graduates in 2012 and is applying to medical school and would like to work in pediatrics. Kellie is a graduate of Manchester West High School and Molly is a graduate of Central High School.
