American sentiment, 1762
Americans very patriotic after defeat. British Empire is in big trouble. Huge debt from 
fighting war. Only fair if colonists contribute to debt. Enforce navigation acts. End of 
“salutary neglect” . 

The sugar Act
Lowers molasses act. 3 pints a gallon, hopes of cutting down smuggleing. Smugglers will 
stand before vice admiralty. Military judge.

Currency Act, 1764
Prior to 1764, hard currency was rare. So they made 
paper currency. Britain said colonies could not print 
paper money

Quatering Act, 1765
Passes to help defray costs of having troops in 
America. Colonists had to feed or house them. 

 
  Stamp Act, 1765
Details: 
Parliament is still trying to raise money. Everything had to be stamped. 
Marriage,diplomas. Newspapers ect. Everybody is effected by this.

“No taxation without representation” colonists think the parliament is no longer acting 
as a barrier or serving their purpose. Response to anger with: Virtual representation. 
Idealy members of parliament is supossed to represent all 
of british empire

Resistance
Sons of liberty = groups of men opposed to stamp act. Gather and discuss politics. Tar 
and feather british agents. Sam Adams was leader of these activities. Attempts to repeal 
Stamp Act.
Stamp Act congress states that they disagree. Boycott British Goods. 

Parliament responds:
Declaratory act, 1766 ­ Yeah, we repeal the stamp act, but we pass whatever laws we want 
hoe
Town shed acts, 1767 – more taxes on more goods
John hancock – breaks laws, and pays fines. British agents set a trap.

Uneasy colonists, british soldiers fire on

The Gaspee Affair, 1772, and the Committees of Correspondence
The Gaspee­ colonists remove the crew and set fire to the ship. Bitish investigate this and 
can’t find anything. So they are forced to overlook it

Commitees of Correspondence ­ Sam Adams idea that spreads, a way to communicate 
about what is going on. A way of tieing up anti­ british people.
 
  Tea Act, 1773

Details of tea act – parliament is willing to do things to help east Indian company. A 
virtual monopoly on tea in the colonies. Tea is pretty cheep. 

Colonial response ­ Colonists don’t care. See it as parliament just trying to make them 
buy tea. They don’t allow them to unload the tea. Sam adams makes sure they don’t

Boston Tea Party – mysterious group of Indians break open tea and dump them into 
Boston harbor. Obvious who did it, but noone actually caught
British Response….

  Coercive (Intolerable Acts), 1774

Details:
• Closed Boston Harbor
• Dissolved Mass Colonial assembly. Run by royal governor
• British officials accused of crime to be tried in Britian
