Appendix B LAN Operating Systems Scenarios

Read the three scenarios below, then answer the questions that follow each scenario.

1. You are the network administrator for a new company that has 10 users and plans to add
five more users within a year. The files need to be accessed by all 10 users and each user must have different security rights. What kind of network would you install and how would the pieces and components of this network relate to each other? Define each component. The Type of Network I would install would be a Client\server using the NOS as the platform in which security rights are given. Using the NOS I could set up individual security rights to each person and add those when they became needed. The Reason I would use a LAN is because the information that may be required for all persons is the Server, in which reports, and other needed to know information could be stored and accessed at any time without having the person there who submitted the report to be at work and have their computer on. 2. You are the network administrator for a company that has a peer-to-peer network. How would the pieces and components of this network relate to each other? Define all of the components of this type of network. A Peer-to-Peer network is also known as a workgroup. These computers are equal and share files freely without a central server, however may operate off a hub in the network to allow them to communicate with each other. An example of a peer-to-peer network would be my computer, then my laptop computer. Each of them are both individual, keeping their own properties and ability to store data, and access each others files, however the data must be transferred to each other or viewed on the opposite computer using the one as a terminal. These are often times useful in homes and small businesses without much protection level protocols, as the files that are shared are often times able to be viewed by anyone in the network that has the ability to gain access to the network. There are

3. You are the administrator of a client-server environment. What kind of network would you
install and how would the pieces and components of this network relate to each other? Define each component of a typical client-server environment. Depending on the geography of the company I would either use a LAN, or a WAN network type. For these reasons a LAN would be best for close proximity networking, such as those in the same building, or a WAN for those that are located outside the same building, such as other building to the main hub building. This would give all those involves access to the main servers, as well as communications with each other computer.
