Oral Presentation Assignment

AY 2011/2012 Semester 2

For your final oral presentation, please choose one of the topics from the list below. Each speaker will have 6-8 minutes to speak. This is a team presentation. You may give your presentation with one other partner or as a group of up to three members. In addition to good presentation structure and content, you should work on making your presentation memorable, interesting and engaging (with catchy rhetoric and easy to understand phrasing) as well as visually attractive (with clear, supportive visual aids). At the end of your presentation, please remember to invite questions from the audience. OP Topics 1. The Assistive Technology Selection Committee has shortlisted your teams proposal to develop a piece of assistive technology (software/ equipment/device) to improve the functional capabilities of your target group of PWDs (the physically disabled/the hearing impaired/the visually impaired/the intellectually disabled), develop their life skills, and help them become more independent. The Committee has invited you to present your proposal in order to help them decide on the companies to which funding will be given under the joint MCYS-IDAs Assistive Technology Development Scheme (ATDS). Bear in mind that your audience would have read your written proposal, so think about how you can transform your teams proposal into a winning oral presentation. You and your team are consultants with IT Pro Pte Ltd, a local company that provides full-cycle services in the areas of software development, web-based enterprise solutions, web application and portal development. With the Internet becoming an integral part of todays living, having an online presence is crucial to the sustainability and success of any business. You have been invited by the Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (ASME) to give a talk to business owners of local SMEs on ways to create an effective online presence. You are IT specialists for an interior design and dcor company that specializes in creating luxurious interiors for homes and offices. One of your major contributions to the company is a complete Homestyler programme that enables users to lay out floor plans and experiment with real products and colours, available for free on the companys website. Your company has secured a presentation booth at the Luxurious Home Design 2012 Exhibition at the Singapore Expo. Your boss has asked you to present your online Homestyler programme to show how it can help new homeowners independently plan the design and dcor of their homes. (You may use this site http://www.homestyler.com/ for your presentation. Alternatively, you can use another online home design and dcor site to present to the audience.) You are entrepreneurs of a successful dotcom company that provides free samples of products to users in return for their product reviews online (you have the option of changing this to a different type of dotcom company). The Computing Club of the School of Computing is organizing a series of talks on Entrepreneurship in Mar-Apr 2012. Being former students of the School of Computing, National University of Singapore, you have been invited by the event organizers to give a talk to students on How to Become a Young Successful Entrepreneur. The Internet is very much a part of childrens lives these days. While the Internet allows children access to a wealth of information and provides convenient means to communicate with their friends, it also exposes them to unsuitable content and situations that can

compromise their safety. Reports of children getting themselves into trouble due to some communication on the Internet are frequent. In many cases, childrens savvy technological skills are beyond their parents, grandparents and caregivers. Recognising the need to educate parents on how to monitor their childrens online activities, the Parents-Teachers Association of Aspire Primary School is organizing a talk on the topic. You are consultants with an IT security company and have been invited to give this talk. 6. Open Topic. This must be IT related and it must have a specific audience and clear purpose. You also need to be clear of your role when giving this presentation. You must get your tutors approval of your topic in advance before you begin your preparations.

Instructions 1. Choose one topic to talk about. For the Open Topic, you must get your tutors approval. 2. Divide the topic as evenly as possible between your team members. Each team member must speak between 6 8 minutes. Avoid assigning a team member to cover only the Introduction and the Conclusion of your team presentation. It is highly recommended that you take the presentation stage only once for your part of the presentation and come together as a team to handle the Q&A. 3. 4. 5. Prepare your oral presentation to be given in the week assigned to you by your tutor. Rehearse your presentation and ensure that you keep to the time limit. Dress formally for the presentation.

6. Bring a hard copy of your PPT slides (six to a page) with clear indications of the presenters names for different parts of the presentation. The PPT printout is to be handed to your tutor before you begin your presentation. 7. Be prepared to answer questions at the end of your presentation.

Evaluation The oral presentation is 30% of your total CA marks. The presentation evaluation will have both individual and team elements. Please refer to the next page for a copy of the evaluation form.
