unemployment rate was 8.3 percent in February. Floridas unemployment rate has been higher than the
nation since April 2008.
Floridas seasonally adjusted total nonagricultural employment in February 2012 was 7,307,900, an
increase of 10,100 jobs (+0.1 percent) from January 2012. On an annual basis, the number of jobs in the

Floridas Nonagricultural Employment by Industry (Seasonally Adjusted)

The number of jobs in Florida was 7,307,900 in February 2012, up 72,300 jobs compared to a year ago.
February was the nineteenth consecutive month with positive annual job growth after the state lost jobs
for three years. The industry gaining the most jobs was trade, transportation, and utilities (+27,800 jobs,
+1.9 percent).

Other industries gaining jobs included private education and health services (+23,800 jobs, +2.2 percent);
professional and business services (+22,500 jobs, +2.2 percent); leisure and hospitality (+21,100 jobs,
+2.2 percent); financial activities (+5,600 jobs, +1.2 percent); manufacturing (+3,300 jobs, +1.1 percent);
and other services (+600 jobs, +0.2 percent).

These industry job gains were partially due to increases in clothing and accessory stores; ambulatory
health care services; employment services; food services and drinking places; real estate; fabricated
metal product manufacturing; and personal and laundry services.

Industries losing jobs over the year included construction (-17,100 jobs, -5.1 percent), total government
(-14,400 jobs, -1.3 percent), and information (-800 jobs, -0.6 percent).

These industry job losses were partially due to losses in specialty trade contractors, state government,
and telecommunications.
Local Area Unemployment Statistics (Not Seasonally Adjusted)

In February 2012, Monroe County (5.4 percent) had the states lowest unemployment rate, followed by
Walton County (6.5 percent), Okaloosa County (6.6 percent), and Alachua County (7.0 percent). Many of
the counties with the lowest unemployment rates were those with relatively high proportions of
government employment.

Flagler County had the highest unemployment rate (12.7 percent) in Florida in February 2012, followed by
Hernando County (12.1 percent); Hendry County (11.7 percent); St. Lucie County (11.4 percent); and
Dixie and Putnam counties (11.2 percent each). Over-the-year job losses in wholesale trade and
information and long-term job losses in construction contributed to Flagler Countys high unemployment
rate. There were 17 Florida counties with double-digit unemployment rates in February, down from 23 in
January.
Area Nonagricultural Employment (Not Seasonally Adjusted)

Thirteen metro areas of the 22 in the state had over-the-year job gains in February 2012. The areas with
the largest gains were Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater (+20,800 jobs, +1.9 percent), Miami-Miami
Beach-Kendall (+19,300 jobs, +1.9 percent), and Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford (+7,200 jobs, +0.7
percent).

Of the metro areas with job declines, the largest losses were in Pensacola-Ferry Pass-Brent (-3,700 jobs,
-2.3 percent), Gainesville (-2,500 jobs, -2.0 percent), and Port St. Lucie (-2,100 jobs, -1.7 percent).
Note: These unemployment and job growth rates are estimates, which are primarily based on surveys created and mandated by the U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics in cooperation with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.
The unemployment rate is derived from Florida household surveys conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau under contract with the U.S. Bureau
of Labor Statistics. The job growth rate is derived from Florida employer surveys conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Both estimates are revised on a monthly basis. In addition, these estimates are benchmarked (revised) annually based on actual counts from
Florida's Unemployment Compensation tax records and other data.
New procedures mandated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics may result in more variable month-to-month changes. For further
information, go to: http://www.bls.gov/sae/cesprocs.htm
