Manufacturing activity declined slightly in March after having

uSA ISM PMI

expanded for the previous three months. The seasonally adjusted Australian Industry Group-PwC Australian PMI fell 1.8 points to 49.5. (Readings below 50 indicate a contraction in 3 the distance from 50 indicative of the strength of activity with month moving average the decrease.) The decrease in manufacturing activity was largely due to significant contractions in the clothing and footwear and wood products and furniture sub-sectors. Survey respondents remained cautious about the outlook, citing softer demand, the strong Australian dollar, the impending carbon tax and import competition as some of the inhibitors of manufacturing activity. Wages and input costs continued to rise in March, while the decline in selling prices persisted, pointing to a further narrowing of manufacturing profit margins. New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia recorded contractions in manufacturing activity.

WHAt IS tHE AuStrAlIAN PMI?

The Australian Industry Group - PwC Australian Performance of Manufacturing Index (Australian PMI) is a seasonally adjusted national composite index based on the diffusion indices for production, new orders, deliveries, inventories and employment with varying weights. An Australian PMI reading above 50 points indicates that manufacturing is generally expanding; below 50, that it is declining. The distance from 50 is indicative of the strength of the expansion or decline. Survey results are based on a rotating sample of manufacturing companies eachmonth. More information can be obtained from the Ai Group website www.aigroup.com.au.
