Investigation into the alleged lightning damage items of a condominium Case Overview A condominium was subjected to a series of lightning strikes, approximately ten (10) times, within a span of 3 months, whereby several parts and other essential components of lifts were alleged to be affected by the lightning strikes. The purpose of the investigation was to determine the extent of damage to the affected items and if all the items were indeed damaged by lightning strikes. Generally, lightning rods are placed on top of the roof in order to channel a build-up of electrical charges from cloud to ground lightning. Damage to electrical items may occur when lightning rods fail to fully dissipate all lightning charges to ground. Background details The following items were allegedly damaged by the lightning strikes: Most components in the lift motor room and lift car-top CCTV system including cameras, cables, and the DVD recorder Access card system for the whole block Boom gates for the car park

Service records: Service records produced by the management of the condominium was for only some of the damaged items and the dates and description on the service records did not match the statements given by the various vendor. Service record dates showed No Activities from the Lift Service Company on the days after the lightning strikes. Our investigation to the extent of damage was carried as below:

Findings and discussion In order to determine whether the items provided to the Team were damaged due to lightning, the route of exposure to lightning was determined. The route of exposure is the route where the electrical current from a lightning strike would travel to the affected items. The parts were also subjected to many other required examinations. We also looked into the following areas before concluding if lightning was the cause of the damage Improper lightning arrester Improper grounding earth resistance measurements were taken Check with meteorological department for history of weather in the area Conclusion It was found that NOT all items that were damaged due to a lightning strike. Other possible causes of damage to the item are listed below: 1. Contamination of the flux. 2. Prolonged exposure to a high temperature environment. 3. Wear and tear. 4. Improper connectivity causing high resistance and build up of heat. 5. Accumulation of dust within the PCB board and IC causing improper dissipation of heat to the surrounding environment.
